The High Adventure - High Mountain Passes Spectacular

Windermere, United Kingdom

Nothing in Britain surpasses the grandeur of Lakeland's central mountains. The route is that fashioned by Emperor Hadrians's Roman legions in the first century AD. You will travel over the steepest passes in England, pausing to view the extensive remains of Hardknott Roman Fort.

Traveling over the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes from Langdale to Eskdale, you will stop at  the top of Wrynose for morning tea. After traversing the passes stop at the Roman Fort, 1,000 ft, up on the fells. You have the opportunity to walk through the fort and see the fantastic view to Upper Eskdale, Scafell and Scafell Pike, England's highest mountains.

Next you will ride on the miniature Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, before a lunch stop at one of the valley inns.

In the afternoon you will continue to Wastwater, Britain's favorite view, and take in the views up into Wasdale and across the lake to the famous 1,500 foot screes. Your next stop is the splendid 14th century castle of Muncaster, a treasure chest of fine historic belongings and tales. In its internationally acclaimed gardens you will find magnificent examples of azaleas, camelias and rhodondendrons and also have the opportunity to visit the World Owl Trust.

On your journey back to Windermere you will see the beautiful scenery of Coniston Fells and Coniston Water.

This experience was AMAZING!!! I felt like I got to see so much of the Lake District that I would never have even known about without a tour. Our guide was friendly and funny--he made the tour fun and educational. There were only six of us on the tour, so it was almost like we had a personal guide and not a huge group tour. The mountains we drove through were beautiful and the castle we visited was a fun was to end up the day. I would definitely recommend this tour to someone who's staying in the Lake District for just a day like me! or for a longer vacation--it's the perfect way to see a large part of the district in a short time.

This trip was great because we were able to see so much of the beautiful countryside that we otherwise would not have done. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, professional and a great driver. Some of the passes were quite a challenge. We would definitely recommend this trip.

A wonderful tour, thoroughly enjoyed it as they take you all around to places you won't really know how to get to unless you have done hours of research, which I don't have time for. The weather on the day we went was wet and rainy, so I think that spoiled the scenery, but it was an enjoyable day out overall!
