Private Tour: Petra Day Trip including Little Petra from Amman

Amman, Jordan

No visit to Jordan is complete without a visit to the rose-red city of Petra, one of the wonders of the world. Carved from the pink-hued stone more than 2,000 years ago, this amazing site embraces temples, tombs, gorges and cliffs. Accompanied by your own private driver and guide, you'll enjoy personalized attention on your private tour of the unforgettable city of Petra.

Located 140 miles (225 kilometers) from Amman, Petra once dominated the trade routes of ancient Arabia. Pass by Little Petra the Nabatean’s carvan stop before heading to the main city. Your visit to this hauntingly beautiful place begins with a walk through the Siq, a narrow path that was once the main entrance to the city. An impressively long, deep and narrow gorge of stunning natural beauty, the Siq is hemmed in by cliffs soaring up to 263 feet (80 meters) , and measures three-quarters of a mile (1.2 kilometers).

At the end of the Siq, you will see the Treasury, El-Khazneh, which was believed to hold countless treasures. Your first view of El-Khazneh is absolutely breathtaking, so have your camera ready! Other monuments you will see in Petra include the theater, Altar of Sacrifice and the royal tombs.

Your private two-hour tour of Petra is led by a local guide, provided by the Authority of Petra under the Ministry of Tourism. Please remember to wear comfortable shoes for this unforgettable adventure.

You'll be driven by a local driver on this hassle-free private tour of Petra. Please list any special interests you have (art, architecture, history, culture) at the time of booking to alert your driver, so they can prepare for your private tour.

Let me first warn you all that Petra is/was a city. When it says bring comfortable walking shoes, they are not kidding! You will be doing a lot of walking first down, then up! Also know, that Petra is not close to Amman, you will have a very long car ride to and back, so be prepared! With that said, our driver was spot on punctual and collected us at our hotel. He told us it was going to be a very long ride and that we would most likely have one stop. All these things were true, but he navigated through traffic and construction with a masters skill and we made the journey well. Upon arrival, we were told where to meet the driver after our tour just down the street and we were introduced to the guide and we were on our way... The guide did a great job explaining Petra and points as we walked. The guide knew all the photo op stops and didn't let us miss one shot and helped my wife get just the right shot!! The guide portion is about 2 to 2.5 hours. This is pretty much stop and go walking at an accelerated pace. For some it may seemed rushed but in reality, Petra is a city and you have a long way to go, a ton of information to acquire and a limited amount of time to get things done. Though the treasury is the known all of Petra's sandstone beauty will keep you baffled, bewildered and simply amazed as you view through the necropolis to the acropolis. The only down sides would be that after all that walking in the hot sun, lunch was not quite on our minds, and it was a tad chaotic. Also, once you have seen Petra, little Petra pales by comparison. So my advice is, rest up, sleep on the ride there, get your walking shoes ready and know you have a nice long drive back where you can rest some more! I highly recommend this tour, but warn it is physically demanding.

DO NOT FORGET TO CONFIRM YOUR TOUR 24 HOURS PRIOR or you will have a meltdown, similar to the one I had, on the morning of our tour March 2, 2018.

Had an amazing day trip to Petra! My driver, Omar, was very friendly and accommodating. The drive is 3 hours from Amman so we stopped halfway for coffee and a bathroom break. Petra was amazing! Had an incredible tour guide named Abraham at Petra who is an archaeologist so his knowledge was impressive. After 3 hours or so at Petra went to a tasty buffet lunch in the town just outside Petra then headed back to Amman. It was a long but great day about 10 hours total but definitely worth it!

This was a great tour. As usual Viator did not disappoint. The guide was prompt at picking us up and we traveled the long distance to Petra stopping once for a bathroom and snack break. The driver was pleasant and pointed out items along the journey. Once at Petra our tour guide met us, retrieved the tickets and we were off. The guide gave us valuable information as we walked along. We were than able to explore on our own as our goal was to make it to the Monastery. The information the tour guide provided was very insightful. We made it to the Monastery, but the walk back made us arrive to the meet up point later than discussed. This was fine with both the driver and us as we preferred the time in Petra over visiting little Petra. The driver also took us to a local falafel spot, per our request, and we had the most delicious falafel sandwiches. Overall this was an excellent tour.

There is so much there to see that some might want to get a hotel at Petra and spend about 2 days there. We hit the highlights and enjoyed it. Our reservation included a horse to ride, but the horses do not go very far on the total walk to the treasury area. We paid extra fro a carriage ride. I would suggest one not pay to ride a horse. For those who can walk that distance, walk it or take the carriage. We could not determine if we were credited for the amount that included the horse, but do not believe we were. We visited in February and the weather was pleasant. The guide who picked us up in Amman charged extra because we were not in a downtown hotel, yet the distance was less to Petra from our location. Did not understand this, but agreed to the charge before booking. What I did not understand was that we were not charged for this at the time of booking and had to pay the guide in cash for the extra charge. The person who picked us up turned us over to local guide once we reached Petra. The restrooms at Petra were filthy. It might be helpful to research the site before you go. This was a bucket list item for many years and so happy we finally got to see Petra.

Incredible tour! Petra is amazing. But, this tour did not include Little Petra, as advertised. But, I was not disappointed, seeing Petra was more than enough for one day.

My driver was very kind, but he was not my guide at Petra. Once in Petra, I was introduce my guide, who was friendly and knowledgeable. After Petra, Little Petra was not much to see. After walking and climbing around for 5 hours, I could have skipped it. Driver was excellent, water, helped to get me lunch, offered fruit. This was a good experience.

great driver, who also sent his cousin to pick us up for cheaper than taxi price for the next day to go to the airport. Must see in person!

Our guide in the car as well as inside Petra were phenomenal. This tour was well planned and executed and we would happily recommend this for others. The only thing we would like to note is that the included horse ride is not the ride that takes you to the top and that taking this ride will still require a tip to the locals. Not a big deal as tips are common in Jordan.

We can not rate this tour highly enough. Our driver Amar was incredibly knowledgeable, witty and welcoming. We had an amazing day, learned a great deal and would recommend this tour to anyone. Thank you Amar for making our short stay in Jordan so great.

Our day at Petra was incredible! I want to give special recognition to our driver, Basel A. Mousa. He was prompt, friendly, incredibly knowledgeable and easygoing. We were even able to book a half-day Dead Sea excursion with him on a whim for the following day also recommended!

This is an amazing tour. Our guide BASEL was extraordinary and helped us all the way long, I fully recommend to take this tour with him._br/_ The only recommendation is to take the tour Petra-Wadi rum together and stay in Petra de night, because takes time to see Petra and you can enjoy it at night too.

Besides driving through the fog and snow, this was a great trip. I enjoyed listening to the driver's stories up and back. Both Petra and Little Petra were stunning.

If you have limited time and want to see Petra, this is a great tour! Our family of six was greeted by our guide and driver at our Amman hotel and driven the three hours to Petra. The guide spoke perfect English - he was once an English teacher - and was very knowledgeable and helpful. We spent about 3 1/2 hours at Petra, which wasn't enough to see everything but gave us a really good understanding of the place. The tour exceeded our expectations.

Petra is beautiful, well worth it. The drive is long from Amman,3 hours. The driver did a good job. My tour guide there was knowledgeable and was good but beware of him taking you to a hut to try and get you to buy coins/goods of a man. Seemed like he may get kickbacks for bringing you there.

The site itself is amazing and you get a certified, trained local guide who is very knowledgeable. The trip itself is with a local in their personal car this person is not a guide at all, so lower expectations some. Warnings should be provided that you need to carry a passport/ID since roadside checkpoints are common.

Really great tour. We spent the whole day in Petra and had a fantastic tour guide who told us a lot of history and information about local plants and was just an overall friendly guy to spend a day with. We declined the donkey ride at the beginning and the walk was not very far, so we felt like we made the right choice. We weren't able to pack a lunch, so had lunch at the Crowne Plaza restaurant in Petra not the cheapest option, but it was a buffet, so it was good value. We took an additional hike up one of the cliffs to see the view from above. It cost a bit extra, but was very much worth it.

My very friendly driver picked me up at the hotel in Amman and drove the 3 hours to Wadi Musa/Petra. He organised my entry ticket and a guide and after I'd finished walking to Petra city and back, he was there to drive me back to Amman. All in all a very nice day where I didnt have to think about a thing.

The driver from Amman was prompt and provided great service and conversation for the long trip. Petra itself was amazing and much larger than anticipated - make sure you plan for a long day in the desert. The primary complaints are the local guide (not very helpful), trash, and countless peddlers.

Excellent trip . From been picked up early by my driver ,who was very polite and good driver . We arrived at petra .i was taken back from start to finish . The little shop there is a little expensive . Its very dusty and old shoes are a must , good walking boots . The beduins love to show you there home land . I will go back if only to see the rest . The high light of my trip was to meet and get my book signed by Margaret who wrote married to a beduin .amazing lady ,amazing story . Its a must for everyone to see the fabulous country and especially Petra . I will be back for sure

To start we had a great guide/driver who picked us up from the air port and drove us around to take care of some business matters before heading to the hotel , Kempinski, with out any fuss, by the way what a great hotel._br/_ The tour to Petra from the Dead Sea took about 3 hours by road with a couple of breaks on the way._br/_ Once there be ready for a bit of walking and it can be hot and dusty but what a place and worth the time, about 4 hours. The guide once there is not your driver but a local guide, good but they really don't know much about the place and ditch you at the end to make your own way back which is pretty easy._br/_ Look out for the guys who will take you back to the entrance once you finished by horse and cart, they should only charge $20 per couple, they try and charge each._br/_ The return trip, another 3 hours by a different route, gave us the chance to see more of the country_br/_ Be ready to tip every one as part of the deal here but what a great place.

We had the driver Munir he was excellent!!! I would recommend paying the additional $ to have him met you before the visa entry since the line was so slow the first time and so long the 2nd time. He drove us to Petra which was perfect, he is the BEST driver in Jordan we had several to compare him to. I would also recommend you plan to ride a horse when you get to Petra NOT the horse buggie which is NOT included in the price but dress appropriately for a short horse back ride and have good hiking shoes. I was not really prepared. I would also suggest you go for the candle lite night that is held 3 nights a week from 8.30-10.30 where they light hundreds of candles to see Petra by night. I would also recommend 3 days to see the entire thing or 6 hours for the short version of it. We had the BEST guide who was a professional photographer his name was Adnan Al Farajat. He was INCREDIBLE! The best hotel is the lower Movenpick since there are 2 properties a lower and an upper. We wish we had more time to drive by ways of the dead sea which is a 4 hour drive through the resort area and the mountains and had possibly spent some time there we were just so short on time. We should have planned more time in Jordan since it is clean, safe, incredible. The Four Seasons in Amann was Perfect too! I'd like to go back and stay when we have more time!!!

Easily a 3 - 3 1/2 hour drive from Amman. An awesome site to see and not miss. Again Basel (driver) was a great asset to have during the drive, our stay, and our education. Provided key knowledge of key sights, things to do, and helped us to get around in Jordan. The tour was awesome and worth the money. The entry into Petra is (50 JD per person), so the trip and the costs associated with hiring through Viator makes the trip instead of relying on public transportation. (April 2014) (* Beware of the taxi drivers)

Way too expensive. Driver was nice but made stop on way to Petra and way back to Amman at a tourist trap that hounded me incessant antsy to buy things! And the driver ate meals each time while I sat there. _br/_ Tour guide in Petra was knowledgable but tour was so expensive I had no money left to tip him.

This was an absolute magical experience! For anyone whom thinks this is a bit much to complete in one day, don't think that! Its definitely worth the time spent. In addition ask if you could have Muneer as driver. He is amazing, shares details you need info on. He is very knowledgeable yet never is intruding and really reads his customers and their needs well. Thanks Muneer for an absolutely amazing time and the ease of the trip which you made possible.

My driver picked us up promptly and we had a very comfortable ride from Amman to Petra. Our driver was very conversational and we learned a lot about the country and the region on the way there. On the way back, we were exhausted and fell asleep for part of the ride. We were handed off to a local guide at Petra and he was equally interesting.

Absolutely amazing! Couldn't recommend this trip enough. If you are planning to visit Petra from Amman in one day, then this is the most convenient way. Our driver (who was amazing) picked us up and headed for Petra. We stopped for breakfast/coffee on the way, then got to Petra where he helped us get tickets and a tour guide (included in the price). He then left us to our own devices for a few hours before we headed back. You'll be exhausted by the end!

Highly recommend! This is a long trip to do in a day but is definitely possible. Our driver arrived promptly at the hotel and stopped to get us coffee at our request on the way. He introduced us to our guide upon arrival. Note, the guide is included in the trip as is the horse ride to the entrance but the tip for the horse guide is not (he told us our tip was insufficient and that most people give something like 10JD for the 5 minute ride, although this person is not affiliated with Viator, just letting you know). The tour guide was very knowledgable and nice and provied great detail. We had 5 hours at Petra before meeting our driver in the afternoon. There is a lot to see and we didn't get to see everything but if this is all the time you have it is certainly sufficient. Great experience, definitely a must see in Jordan and recommend the tour company.

Our driver was a very competent individual. He arrived at the hotel on time, the car was a clean recent model Nissan 4 door. The driver was fluent in English and also had vast knowledge of history and current events. The driver battled both rain and snow to get us to Petra safely. The driver was very helpful in advising do's and don'ts while in Petra and introducing us to our guide. A job well done!
