Athens Half-Day Sightseeing Tour

Athens, Greece

Combine the sights of modern Athens with sites of historical importance on a 3.5-hour morning or afternoon tour by luxury coach. With an expert guide on hand to explain all the top Athens attractions, the tour passes Constitution Square and Panathenaic Stadium — home of the first modern Olympic Games. Explore the Acropolis of Athens on foot, and discover famous monuments such as the Pantheon. If you’re eager to see more, book the morning tour and upgrade to include an entrance ticket to Athens Acropolis Museum.

Meet your guide in central Athens and head off on your tour around the Greek capital by luxury air-conditioned coach. Pass the must-see Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that stands in front of Parliament House on Constitution Square, and see the Presidential Mansion that served as the Royal Palace before the country’s monarchy was abolished in 1974.

Watch out for Panathenaic Stadium — site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 — and then relax as your coach drives along Panepistimiou, home to Athens’ National Library and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, known locally as ‘Mitropoli.’

After seeing the highlights of modern Athens, step back in time with a tour of the city’s past. See the Roman Temple of Olympian Zeus, and then stop at Athens’ crowning glory: the Acropolis of Athens. Built on a rocky hill towering above the city, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed acropolis comprises a cluster of ancient buildings that once collectively acted as a fortress. Each building was created to reflect the splendor and wealth of Athens during the 5th century.

Highlights of the acropolis include the famous Parthenon temple, Propylaea gateway and Temple of Athena Nike, a monument built to represent Athens’ ambition as the most powerful Greek city. After spending time at leisure at the acropolis, make your way back to the start point by coach.

Morning Tour plus Museum: (5 hours)
Upgrade from the morning tour to include an entrance ticket to Athens Acropolis Museum, and head inside the intriguing attraction after your tour finishes. Head inside to browse the museum’s artifacts and relics independently, and see statues from the Archaic period alongside some 4,000 other exhibits. The Parthenon Hall is also a highlight, and it complements your earlier visit to the temple with historical facts.

Your entrance ticket allows you to spend as long as you like inside the museum, however most people find two hours (after your 3.5-hour tour finishes) to be sufficient.

The morning pick-up was a bit disorganized and please be advised that if you don't intend to go to the museum, then they do not offer drop-off. Overall, our guide was knowledgeable, but I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get off the bus more often to explore the sights. You drive by most and only get off at the Acropolis and the stadium.

We enjoyed the tour - but it was basically a tour of the Acropolis museum and the Acropolis with a short stop at a hippodrome. This tour might be more appropriately titled 'Acropolis Tour'. A lot of Athens remains unexplored. Given the limited 4-hr time window, there's no time to visit any other attractions. The narrated tour of the Acropolis museum was particularly helpful.

Great overview of the key highlights of Athens. Our guide was very knowledgeable. Unfortunately our guide sometimes had difficulty handling what was a very large group.

This was a very informative tour. Guide was excellent. My opinion is it's better than walking around the site on your own.

Enjoyed seeing the Acropolis, Parthenon and the Acropolis Museum. Dora did a great job explaining the history of these key sights in Athens, but also was very good about describing many of the other sights throughout Athens. Very enjoyable and I would highly recommend!

This was a well organised tour, with a prompt coach pick up and a very knowledgeable guide, Effi. The first part of the tour is coach based with brief stops along the way for pictures, but we finally disembarked at the Acropolis Museum and this is where the tour got really interesting with Effi's knowledge of the subject bringing the history to life in English and French. The museum is an ultra modern building with glass floors between levels and a fitting achitectural structure to complement the historic ruins it depicts and faces. The final part of the tour was the ascent to the top of the Acropolis and the Parthenon itself, which is an impressive sight. A very enjoyable half day and one I would recommend.

Things were organized and the guides were professional, however, it was hard to enjoy the tour because it was so crowded. I recommend taking the tour during the weekday because during the weekend there were too many people. It's not that I don't like people, it's more that it took a lot of time to get from point A to point B due to the crowd. Taking pictures was somewhat of an issue too. Everytime I wanted to take a picture I had to wait until someone in front of me moved out of the way. Overall, I would say there was not enough time to stay and see everything because of the crowd. Just to get back to the coach took a long time because your fighting all the people trying to go up the stairs when you're trying to go down. And this was in October when there is less tourism.

Tour was very rushed which somewhat spoiled it. Guide was very knowledgeable but speed made it difficult to digest everything. Also, the tour was not done on the day originally scheduled due to rain forecast that never existed in our opinion.

This tour hit all of the spots we were looking to see - the Parthenon was a little busy, but only because two cruises has stopped to tour on that same day - aside from that, I highly recommend this tour if yo're looking for all of the 'top' attractions in Athens!

This tour was wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone. We opted to include the museum with our tour. The experience was wonderful, however we were not aware that no bags were allowed in the museum. No worries though, the museum offers safe storage of them while you are in the museum and the tour guide had our whole groups items stored together and she held the claim ticket. The only problem with that is we all had to leave the museum together to reclaim our things. We would have liked to have experienced the museum longer and on our own, but that wasn't possible without paying to re-enter. So the only reason I do not give this tour 5 stars is because of that. Had we known about having to check our bags prior to getting to the museum we would not have taken bags or we would have checked our bags separately allowing us to leave when we chose. It would be beneficial for Viator to add that part to their tour info.

Review by:   leb8680,    October 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Mostly a waste of time. Quickly drove by many of the buildings with short comments. Since we were in a tinted windows bus, it was often difficult to known what or where he was referring. Long walk up to the Parthenon, with a quick history, but very minimal compared to what other guides were covering. Left us to return to the bus on our own with a general description on how to find it. We returned and found no bus or guide. Fortunately we were only 10 minutes to our hotel and walked .No inclusion of the museum, a must see stop. In all our years of travel we have never been abandoned. Always a first, I guess. Better off finding your own guide at the site.

The tour coach was comfortable, the tour guide is very knowledgeable about ancient history as well as modern implications, the timing for the hotel pick-up was quite early 7.30am, but the journey to see the Parthenon and visit the Acropolis Museum after was well worth the trip

Our tour guide was amazing. For all you got, the price of the tour was a little high. The museum entry is only 5 euro, but the tour guide charged us 13 euro. Buy the museum ticket on your own.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the area, and you can tell she really enjoyed telling us about her city and what makes Athens so special. She took us on the bus to a few sights but the real showpiece of this tour is the Acropolis. She did as much explaining as she could both before entering the site as well as on the site itself, but because this tour agency doesn't use headsets it was very hard to hear her amidst the crowd. Also, it was so hot the day we went first week of May, and to have to stop and listen to the guide in the blazing sun for 20 minutes was a bit much. She tried to give us time to explore the Pantheon and area on our own, but we only had about ten minutes after she finished talking. She did take us to the new Acropolis Museum for an extra fee, and that was the really cool part of the tour. The museum itself is amazing, and because of the closed space, we could hear her a bit better in there.

Firstly, we sat 40 min on bus to have the tour operator upsell people who didn and #39;t buy the museum portion. We whizzed through some sites with a guide who seemed very disinterested. She started talking before the group was together. The museum was lovely but she rushed us through. Worse tour ever.

Our guide was Dora, and our driver was Costas. Costas was a miracle worker getting in and about through the traffic. Dora was amazing, with a great deal of knowledge about her beloved city. She has a passion for the Acropolis, its museum and its artifacts that is second to none. I could feel her pain when she talked about the antiquities removed from Athens and taken to other countries, especially England._br/_ We have used Viator for tours in five cities now, and recommend it heartily to everyone we talk to about travel.

Picked us up an hour before the tour started because they had so many pick up. Our tour guide (Joy) chewed gum the whole time. and #34;Tour and #34; around the city was ridiculous. Showed us the residential area and banks. Tour of the Acropolis was awful. Had to wait for her to buy our tickets. Go on you own!

This is a very good tour for the person who is visiting Athens for the very first time. It is also good for those who have visited before and who want to revisit the wonderful sites of the city in a half day session. We were promised to see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Constitution Square and the Panathenaic Stadium. We drove by the Unknown Solider monument, and we did a full stop and visit of the Stadium. We were told we would visit the Roman Temple of Olympian Zeus, and we drove by twice. Driving by these wonderful sites was not enough to see them or even take photos of them. This part was a little disappointing because my time in Athens did not allow for me to revisit on my own time. Having said this, the visit to the Panathenaic Stadium and the Acropolis were over the top. We spent a great deal of time climbing and getting to the Parthenon and its various neighboring monuments, and the ruins were just amazing to see. The height of 'the Rock' overlooking the city is breathtaking, and one can only imagine what it was like when the Parthenon was in its full glory. This was a very big highlight of my entire visit to Athens. Following, was a lovely visit to the Acropolis Museum, which looks over to the Acropolis from several open windows all the while pieces of the Parthenon and temples are shown in tandem with what was. The imagery and art and sculpture of the time shows how truly terrific man can be when he is put to the task of creating something beautiful with a story and a unique vision. Another wonderful part of our tour was our tour guide, Aspasia, who was Greek herself and spoke both English and French fluently, and she flipped amongst the three for 5 hours! She said she was an archeologist, but she needs to be a UN translator! She was marvelous and made the tour extra special. I would definitely recommend this tour and insist that a full stop be made at Zeus and Unknown Soldier monuments.
