Mycenae and Epidaurus Day Trip from Athens
USD $115.00

Mycenae and Epidaurus Day Trip from Athens

Athens, Greece

Explore the remains of the ancient city of Mycenae a major centre of Greek civilization from 1600BC to 1100BC and visit the small village of Epidaurus famous in ancient times for being a place of healing.

After taking a scenic drive along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf, you will come to the ancient city of Mycenae home to the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon. Visit the tomb of Agamemnon, the Palace and the Lionesses Gate.

Stop off at the picturesque town of Nauplia before arriving in Epidaurus. The world heritage listed city is reputed to be the birthplace of Apollo's son Asklepios, the healer and was the most celebrated healing center of the classical world. Epidaurus is probably most famous for its theatre, one of the best preserved classical Greek buildings and still used today due to its amazing acoustics.

It was a wonderful experience walking among the Mycenaean ruins, however the true highlight was the theater in Epidaurus. Our guide Mena was great and very knowledgeable. The only thing I did not enjoy was having a very long lunch in a generic catering hall. That time should have been used during our stop in Nauplia, which was so charming.

The lunch was prearranged hotel food and spoiled the experience for me. I would have rather gone to a taverna, but they work the timing out that makes anything but the hotel lunch possible. I was dropped off at the wrong hotel and had to use my map to find my way back to the correct drop point and then to my hotel. After a long day, that was the last thing I wanted to do. When I complained to the supervisor the next day, all as he said was that that was wrong and stupid. Buyer beware. Hint, don't get off the bus until you are 100 sure you are at the correct location.

It was a memorable experience and a must see for all who care about history!_br/_ We were so lucky to have Joy, for our guide, a lady with such vast knowledge of history, mythology and history of art, and the ability to present it in perfect English and French. _br/_ She was very helpful and gave us valuable information and tip to visit National Archeology Museum in Athens, to see the exhibits from Mycenae area. It was a joy to hear Joy's stories!

Guide is very knowledgeable. Tour is educational, especially if you're into Ancient Greek History. It was just unfortunate that it was raining the day I went. The guide is kind enough to lend me her extra umbrella.

I took this tour before visiting Athens world class archaeological museum, which was a fortunate happenstance. I had much more perspective about all the amazing artifacts found there. Our guide was outstanding, and it was a wonderful experience walking among the Mycenaean ruins. Agamemnons tomb was a highlight.

This was definitely worth a long day to see Mycenae and Epidaurus. The only thing I would change is the Lunch. We stopped between Mycenae and Epidaurus at a hotel for Lunch. The hotel was basically by it self in the middle of a field. So, you basically have to eat lunch here, there are no other options. I would have preferred to have had the hotel lunch at Nafplion, and thus had more options and more time to see Nafplion.

Loved the place and the guide -unfortunately I cannot remember her name, she was a Greek lady and her grasp of English was fantastic! A great professional.

Much too overpriced. Normally viator offers you small coaches for about 10 people, but somehow in Greece they decided to change to big busses designed for more people although on this particular tour it wasn't even filled. If I wanted to go on such a large scale tour, I could have gotten pretty much the same tour somewhere else for a much cheaper price than here.

Apart from a little difficulty with the Hotel pick up which was a Hotel issue tip: wait at the reception desk and not the entrance and mention to reception who you are and who you are waiting for! the tour proceeded very efficiently and the visits to the Corinth canal and Mycenae were both very interesting and spectacular. Epidaurus theatre was superb but perhaps a wander in the other ruins could have been included. Lunch was good if a little soulless in a large modern hotel. Our guide was lovely and kept us amused with Greek myths. Thoroughly recommended.

Should start a Mycenae tour before seeing Athens as this is the beginning. The guide will never disappoint you with wonderful historic story telling.

First, the hotel pick up by the bus was on time...very good. Second, the van/bus was clean and modern..very good. Third, the driver got us home... Very good. Fourth, the guide knew her stuff. She told interesting and accurate stories/information. She was the best. Fifth, Chat Tours in Athens is good

It was an amazing experience and affordable. We visit the Corinthian Channel, Epidaurus and Mycenae. Our guide, Ephy, was extraordinary and she supplied us a lot of information, interesting stories and miths. Highly recommended for a 10 hours trip and a very comfortable voyage.

We were very happy with this tour. Our guide was grate, he was well informed and had humorous comments that made our trip. We did not take a tour with lunch included and we had a chance to enjoy our free time in Naphlio and have our lunch there which was so much better then lunch in a hotel which was included.

The tour guide was informative, and the transportation was always on time. I would have preferred more time at the sites, especially Epidaurus. Perhaps taking less than thirty minutes per test stop would help.

These are the less famous and less visited sites of ancient greece so worth it. As with most tours they take an hour doing all the hotel pickups. First stop was the Corinth canal where you can also buy snacks. Next was Mycenae definitely the days highlight with its unusual circular pyramid design as well as a stop to the tomb of agemmemnon. Then we stopped for an hour at some resort hotel in the middle of nowhere. Lunch wasnt in my option and we were told there was a cafeteria but it was closed. Good job I bought a sandwich in Corinth earlier. After an hour at the hotel we stopped for 30 mins in Nafplio the first capital. This was a historic city with lots of cafes and restaurants. It would have been better to spend the 90 mins here for lunch rather than the isolated hotel. Finally Epidaurus which was a healing centre. Our guide Marina was very knowledgeable. A good tour and suggest they move lunch to Nafplio.

Really loved this tour. The tour guide was great and we had a lot of time. Like most tours you don't get to see everything that you could if you were on your own, but I thought we got to see a lot. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a very difficult tour for older people who will have trouble with hills and uneven pavement.

Review by:   Erzsebet D,    September 2017 Review: 4 star rating: Recommended
The bus trip was comfortable, the historic sites were beautiful. The major disappointment was that those who did not book the trip with lunch had to stay at the out of town hotel where the lunch was served for the others. So we had to eat there too instead of enjoying the nearby Napflion and having something for lunch there. After this forced lunch almost 90 minutes, the group spent only 30 minutes in Napflion.

Stop at the town of Nauplia, was really delightful. I would have preferred using this as the lunch spot. The Hotel we stopped at for lunch was delightful, but we wasted time traveling when the town visit could have served both purposes.

We were pleased we did this tour. We were given plenty of free time to see each sight. Lunch was pleasant and relaxed.the locations are definitely worth seeing but be aware that there is likely to be a lot of other tourists with the same idea.

I loved this trip- having always wanted to see Mycenae and Epidaurus, I really enjoyed the time spent there - good mix of guided tour time with a great guide and time for us to do our own exploring. The stopover in Nafplio was good too- a very charming little town!

Fantastic tour. Our tour guide Mina was amazing and hilarious. The sites were so beautiful and enough shade when the sun got too hot. There's also lots of places to purchase cold drinks and ice cream. We booked the tour with lunch, which was delicious!

These are amazing places to visit but unfortunately this tour did not give us long in either site. This may have been because the monuments all closed early on the day of our tour due to a extreme heat, so I don't know how much time we would have had on a normal day. It wasn't clear from the website how much time would be spent travelling and how much time would be at the sites themselves, particularly Mycenae where there is a museum as well as the ruins. The tour company did an amazing job rescheduling at short notice, and even had to take us to a different place for lunch. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and did a great job of presenting in both English and French - but that did mean that sometimes the commentary was a bit behind and held things up at times. The guide was also extremely helpful when my son got car sick - largely because the air conditioning wasn't able to cope with the heat - there were long periods when the thermostat sat over 30!! If I had my time again I'd do a two day tour and go at a more leisurely pace.

We were told we would be picked up or get info in how and when. We did not get any info and had to call and was told there would be no pickup although the confirmation had said that we would get such info. We where also told that we would be taken back to our hotel but where set off 1.1 km from the hotel my wife uses crutches so a walk of 1.1 km is fairly long. So the service and the logistics were not that good to say it politely. The tour as such was fine and the guide and driver competent. I will post also a review on TripAdvisor telling other customers to be aware of the problems we encountered.

We were supposed to join this tour at 8:30am after leaving our cruise ship that morning. We were delayed leaving the ship so arrived at the meeting place at 8:40. We'd been told we could be as late as 8:45. I spoke to a CHAT tour woman on a bus to Delphi about our tour and she called people and told us our bus would be arriving in a few minutes across the street. Suddenly, two young men appeared to take our 4 bags from us and helped us across the street while taking charge of our luggage. I felt like we received first class treatment and was so grateful because I really wanted to go on this tour. The bus had been driving around picking up people from hotels and showing the sights of Athens so we headed out of the city as soon as we were picked up. We were both very happy they stowed our luggage under the bus and one woman on the bus changed seats so my husband and I could sit together. At the end of the tour, we were dropped off at our hotel and our heavy luggage was unloaded for us. Excellent service!

Unless you're really into ancient ruins and/or know every single Greek god, you can skip this tour. Mycenae was nice and Epidaurus was beautiful but there really was not much to see in the latter besides the amphitheater. Also, you don't spend a lot of time in the sites on this tour, you almost have to choose between the listening to guide and exploring on your own if you really want to see it all. Also, the end of the tour is a washroom stop but really a gift shop stop to get you to buy pottery under the guise of showing you how ceramics are made. I hate stops like this on the tours. We spent what felt like 40 min there that would have been better spent at Mycenae or Epidaurus.

Very informative and enjoyable tour. Being at a site that flourished as a highly developed civilization close to 4000 years ago is truly rewarding. Our guide, Mr Stitha ?, was exceptional. It is a pity that we do not get to spend some time in the beautiful little town of Nafpion.

The remains at Mycenae was one of the reasons I decided to visit Greece. The physical remains were more impressive than I had been led to believe, and seeing them in context with the landscape was an advantage. This part of Greece is mainly mountainous, but with interspersed plains and it was interesting seeing how close Mycenae was to other population centres, such as Ancient Corinth, Tiryns etc.

The whole tour from all sites and the stops in-between was amazing. The weather was on our side and had some of the best views of the sea. The tour was well-organized and well-paced. Our guide, Martina, provided just the right amount of information and allowed us plenty of free time to explore the sights on our own. I also enjoyed her commentary on the countryside as we were driving to the historic sites. I had been wanting to visit Mycenae and Epidaurus since learning about them in Classical Studies courses many years ago, and was glad I decided to join this tour. I got much more out of the experience than if I had visited the sites on my own.

Absolutely a must do! We so enjoyed this excursion. The drive through the beautiful countryside, especially on return to Athens along the coast of the Ionian Sea was beautiful and picturesque. The bus was comfortable and clean. This tour of the Corinth Canal, the Mycenaean tomb, museum and ruins at Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplio was amazing. The amount of ruins and artifacts, not to mention the pristine shape they are maintained in is truly a sight to see and experience. Epidaurus Theater was a major sight to behold, climb up and just take in. The seaside town of Nafplio with its mighty fortress/castle was an amazing sight. Helen, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable and filled us up with so much history and information. She really knew her stuff! And hats off to the our driver who maneuvered through the tightest streets at times. We highly recommend this tour and are SO glad we added it to our trip.

Wonderful day. Our guide was helpful and friendly and full of knowledge of the areas we visited. We didn't wish to take up the offer of a lunch at the hotel on the way to Epidaurus but were made welcome there anyway whilst we sat outside in the sun.

Whew!!! I am out of breath just thinking about this tour. Frankly, the climbing is what took my breath away. No wonder the ancient Greeks were in such good shape and lived such short lifespans, Anyway, wonderful tour, terrific guide and marvelous scenery. The coastal community we stopped in for lunch had a very interesting history and, you guessed it, to see the TOP attraction required more climbing. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you aren't in shape, better get that way for this tour.

Mycenae and Epidaurus are awesome sites and worth the excursion. Could have used a bit more time at each to explore. _br/_ The only contention with this tour was the lunch stop. If you purchase the included lunch option, you stop at the Amalia Hotel outside the city sister property to the main pick up point in Athens. If you didn't purchase the included lunch option, you stop at the Amalia Hotel outside the city and wait for people to eat. We did not purchase the lunch which according to others on the tour said was 'subpar' and just waited. While I understand the tour company is in it to make a buck, it's a shame because Napfoli was such an interesting place that the hour spent waiting in the lobby of the Napfoli hotel could have been used to explore the most charming point of the tour. When we made this point to one of the Chat Tours staff the vendor Viator uses the lady mumbled something about for safety reasons. Such BS.

Could have been a great tour but our guide was not helpful, failed to let us know of a main site at Epidaurus, often gave incorrect information, left the bus before many of the customers and just did not seem interested or inspired by her job as guide.
