Bali Kecak Dance, Fire Dance and Sanghyang Dance Evening Tour
Bali, Indonesia
No visit to Bali would be complete without seeing some of the island's colorful traditional dances, the Kecak Dance, the Fire Dance and the Saghyang Dance.
When in Bali you simply must view three of the most famous dances in the country. Sanghyang (Trance) Dance, Kecak (Monkey Dance) and the Fire Dance are three performances that will truly make your visit to Bali more special. Taken from the Hindu epic Ramayana, the Kecak dance is perhaps the most dramatic. The dance tells the story of Prince Rama and his rescue of Princess Sita, performed with a troupe of over 50 bare-chested men who serve as the chorus.
There are dozens of different dances - all part of the fascinating Balinese cultures. This tour takes you to the village of Batabulan to see three dances. Kecak (Monkey) Dance - Performed by a group of at least 50 men who dance in a circle around blazing bamboo torches. Possibly the most dramatic of the 3 dances, it has been taken from the Hindu epic Ramayana, the dance tells the story of Prince Rama and his rescue of Princess Sita, who has been kidnapped by the evil King of Lanka. The chorus of men, who provide the orchestral accompaniment with complex and varied chants that company their swaying movements. The only music to accompany them are the beats of their palms hitting their chests, their thighs, or other parts of their bodies, or their claps, rhythmically accompanied by shouting and chanting. Flickering torches provide lighting and an enchanting atmosphere.
Fire Dance - Where the dancer becomes entranced and is able to dance on hot coals without feeling pain.
Saghyang (Trance) Dance - Traditional performed as an exorcism to promote peace and health within the village.
After the dance performances your guide will be happy to drop you at a local restaurant of your choice, close to your hotel, or back to your hotel.
We were picked up from the hotel and the guide insisted on coming early. He had a driver with him which was a bit odd. We ended up waiting for the place to open for at least an hour. The show was different and also a bit scary with the Fire Dance. It was interesting to see.

Oka the guide came to pick me up at the hotel. He even bought some mosquito repellent for me to spread on while watching the kecak dance performed outside. The dance was magnificent and very entertaining._br/_ Oka was very professional. Thank you for a nice evening.

this was a nice story told thru dance. read the pamphlet before the show so you know whats happening bc they dont tell you. Guy dancing thru fire was ok, but i thought he would stay in it longer or set his wooden skirt on fire. still, entertaining

It is a long trip to see the show. Plus I felt we were collected early so they could bring us to some shops/craft places to try and get us to buy things. The show itself was interesting

Really enjoyed this tour, the dance place in a beautiful temple, and you got even buy a Bintang! Very good dance, and good information given on the history of it. The fire dance section was particularly exciting. They also took us to a coffee plantation which is next door to the dance and that was interesting.

Although the hotel transfer situation with this tour is a little awkward there is an extra charge to get collected from Ubud and certain hotels require an additional fee once we had actually started the tour was lovely. Our driver and tour guide picked us up early and took us to local markets as it was our last day in Bali, to get last minute gifts. The show itself is very exciting. It's not quite like anything you've seen before and there's the option to have pictures taken with the cast at the end of the show. A tad overpriced I think as it is possible to get tickets quite a bit cheaper from the counter but this doesn't include transfer so see what works for you!

This is not good value for money, at all. The buses are uncomfortable and have no good working air conditioning, the guide was rude, the food was not eatable - very overcharged. I do not recommend this provider. Just get a private driver, and pay your own entry ticket to the show. It will be much cheaper and more pleasant.

The guide and the driver picked me up 2h before show, although the theather was only 30min ride from my hotel.they wanted to take us to the silver market on the way and spend there the rest 1,5h till the show.as we refused the guide was visibly annoyed and not interested in any kind of communication.the show lasted 45min, it was low middle class performance.there are much better dance performances of this great traditionall balinese dance.i would not recommend this tour.

This was full of interest, energy and color. It was a good choice for an evening of entertainment and I love my pictures. We were able to have our picture taken on stage afterward with the leading actor. I'll see it again some day. Se sure to read your program as you go along to follow the story.

The show was fantastic, especially the Fire Dance, he literally picked up fire with his bare hands! The show wasn't as long as I thought it would be which suited me fine. The stage is outside, so be careful of Mosquito's biting as the sun goes down.

This tour was excellent. I was picked up on time by the guide and driver as arranged and taken to the theatre. En route, we stopped at a traditional Balinese house. The show was very well done, the dances varied, each with their own style. i had attended dance shows in Bali before but it was good to see three different ones in a single performance. I would certainly recommend this tour.

First of all we were asked to pay an extra $30 because our hotel was out of the way and we needed to be picked up an hour earlier. All that $30 got us was a unsolicited tour of a near by town. We were taken to see woodcarvers and a silver shop. The mechendise price was greatly marked up and the sales people were pushy and rude. Once our tour guide figured out we were on to him he became rude also. We arrived an hour an a half early for the show as people came in it was apparent the same thing happened to many of them. The show itself was ok not what we expected though. Hope this helps someone not waste their time while in Bali.

good trip with very nice dance performance - later found that it was a little expensive ( private exclusive taxi costs usd 32 for to and fro trip with waiting and ticket for dance was usd 8 + 8 ( 2 persons) , so this trip could have been done at cheaper price ourselves at usd 48 whereas we paid usd 72. anyway, a good experience.

It was a very entertaining evening performance. the Tour company was great. They ran the tour with only me on the tour. I was glad I wasn't dancing in the fire!

It was advertised for 2.5 hours but went for only 1 hour. It was not a "fire" dance as I had seen before. It was very disappointing. On route we were left in the bus for over 30 minutes while we waited for late guests without any communication from the guide or driver. Although the bus air-conditioning was running it was uncomfortable and frustrating. An unenjoyable evening.
Review by: Neil B, September 2013
Guide on the drive to the venue was rather boring. Also, he allowed 2 and a half hours to get to the location, which surprise surprise, gave us enough time to stop off at a shopping centre where he was well known, so this is clearly a hidden part of the trip. Similarly on the way back, he offered to drop us at a restuarant he knew. Show itself was quite good, especially the fire dance, although the Kecak dance did drag a bit; atmosphere wasn't quite as expected as there was only just over 30 participants on stage, and not the large choir as advertised, and most of them looked as if they were having a laugh with each other as opposed to performing.

This was a great evening. Our guide collected us early from our resort and showed us some nice little "extra" places of interest. Well worth the effort.

i was taken to places like silver shops and batik shops , which i was not interested and the dance was only for 45 mins where as at the time of booking i was told that the dance will be for 2.5 hours , so it was not worth the money I paid for it._br/_
I would not recommend this to my friends

My husband and I were the only ones booked on this tour and our guide had us at the venue early so as to secure front row seating for us!! The dances gave us an insight into the culture and religious stories of the people of Bali and the performers were obviously loving what they were doing. Very entertaining and enjoyable night out.

This tour lets you glimpse Bali's spirit. The Kecak ("Ke-chak") dance is beautiful and moving, danced not to music but to the sound of 100 men's voices. The effect is breathtaking. The Sanghyang dance is done by two young girls, and the Fire dance is certainly something to experience. It started to rain during the Kecak dance - they just stopped at a good spot, picked up and moved everyone to the inside stage and area, and continued! Priceless!

I didn't end up going on this tour. I cancelled because my daughter and I were exhausted plus we had experienced a number of traditional dance performances at other venues during our holiday. I would have liked to see the fire dance but it was not to be this time. I would recommend it to others though because I believe it would be worthwhile and enjoyable.

Would have been better to have had a Balinese dinner to make the trip worth while.

Picked up on time and before dancing was taken to jewellery making place that sold silver for half an hour, which was a bit salesy, and then to a wood carving and batik shop that was even more salesy, which spoilt it a bit! Guide also salesy. I suppose that's Bali for you though. Got to the dance 45 minutes before the start, so was hanging around. When it did start, though, it was pretty good, if a bit lengthy. Lots of kids crying and moaning by then, which spoilt it. Lot of people left early. Best bit was the guy jumping into hot coals! Good to know the story of Rama.
