Belize City and Altun Ha Mayan Site Tour

Belize City, Belize

Explore Belize City and the ancient Mayan City of Altun Ha with an entertaining and knowledgeable local guide. This 4.5-hour group tour is a stress-free and comfortable way to visit both the city and the ruins. During your varied day, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy the local foods and get a feeling for the people that live in this colorful corner of the world.

Meet your fun, knowledgeable guide at your Belize City port or hotel and get ready for an entertaining drive through Belize City and to the Mayan site of Altun Ha. As you pass landmark sites in Belize's biggest city, you'll hear how the city was built built from wealth accrued from the rum and mahogany trades. From the historic, hand-cranked swing bridge over Haulover Creek to St John’s Anglican Church, you'll hear about some of the most important people in the country's history. After spending time in Belize City you'll begin the 1-hour drive (with beverages, in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle) to Altun Ha, a Mayan archaeological site that is one of the most important historic places in Belize. Along the way you'll learn about the culture, flora, and fauna of Belize as you pass through rural Creole villages.

Stretch your legs at Altun Ha, an ancient site comprised of two main plazas with 13 temples in a park-like atmosphere. Visitors up for a climb can head up the stairs to the top of the 54-foot (16-meter) central temple for panoramic views of the entire site and the surrounding jungle. After a walk around Altun Ha, you'll have time to sample the local food at a nearby restaurant (own cost) and shop at the gift store before being driven back through Belize City to your port.

My wife and I both enjoy this tour with Allen Dawson. He was very informative and gave very good insight about the history of both the city of Belize and Altun Ha. He made the tour really enjoyable and interesting. _br/_ The next time I go to Belize I'll make sure to contact Allen for another tour that he offers. _br/_ Belize offers a very natural beauty that one has to see. Great time and thank you Allen.

The most awesome guide and trip I have ever experienced. We had two in our group that had problems with mobility and he was very thoughtful and helpful, did not rush anyone and I know that it had to take us a little longer to walk the tour. His knowledge of the city, Altun Ha and flora and fauna was wonderful. He explained that Belize has certain requirements that must be fulfilled to be a guide and now I understand why. Allen has made Belize proud with his representation of the country. Thank you from all 4 of us for making this a great trip. Thanks for the water, hottest day ever.

Great trip with Allen as an expert guide! We came in on a Carnival ship tender. There is no beaches nearby, only shopping on the waterfront, so looked for an overview trip of the area. The only hangup was our tour was to leave at 9 am Belize time. That meant we needed to be first off to get there in time. Non Carnival booked trips were not a priority understandable so we had to be in line to get the 8:00 tender for a 45 min trip by 7:15. Kinda early for a vacation in my opinion. Turned out, the ship's time was an hour ahead of Belize so we were an hour early. Not a big deal since Allen had plenty of interesting conversation. We only had one other couple to join us in a van. So much better than having 50-100 other people join us! _br/_ Enjoyed touring the city and seeing the progress they are making in rebuilding with more modern substantial structures. Still not a place you would enjoy strolling about, but getting better. The ruins were the highlight. The area was much larger than I expected with several large pyramids and many smaller ones. Allen showed us around and explained the history and culture of the time. We stayed about an hour and that was plenty because it took almost an hour to get there. It had a small museum with maps and good information as well as a few vendors and a snack bar. I had taken snacks and didn't eat there. Not much to offer. I did have a frozen coffee which was really good in the humid heat. Also, we should have brought bug spray! They were ferocious! We ended up buying a can there for 10. _br/_ Love these trips from Viator! Local, reasonably priced, small groups. Worth any inconvenience of walking a few more feet to get to your guide. We used them again in Roatan. Another awesome decision. We had a perfect beach day at a hotel at West Bay. I highly recommend!

Our guide, Allen, was extremely knowledgable and took his time explaining various buildings in downtown Belize and their purpose in a historic and cultural perspective. Very courteous and took time to make sure we had something to eat and answered all my questions along the way. Felt more like a friend than a guide. He gave us a really in depth view of the Altun Ha site and explained its archaeological importance. Please do not miss going on a tour with Allen. You will not find a better guide in Belize City. The next time I come to Belize, I will be sure to look for him first.

Allen was our tour guide and he was outstanding. Very informative with photo pamplets about the birds, fish, animals etc. Air conditioned bus ride, provided water and soft drinks. these came in very handy as it was extremely hot and humid. Worth the money.

The tour is totally worth every penny. We are a group of 10 and 9 of us are seniors. Our guide Allen is great, not only is he very knowledgeable but also very attentive, he and #39;s very patient and caring with our seniors and explained the town and history very well. Thoroughly enjoyed the tour!

My college roommate and I did our homework to find a way for our group to see our Ports of Call without obligation to our cruise excursion folks as they are quite pricey. _br/_ We booked this tour and were pleased to actually have the owner as our guide! Allen took us ever so proudly through his country with expertise and love in sharing with us. Not only were we still getting used to Port time versus Ship time, yet were very surprised, he was one step ahead of us and was almost an hour early. The Mayan ruins were a sight and with the guided and historical knowledge of Allen, we learned so much and it didn't even feel like learning. By the end of the day we felt like friends, even family spending the day together, We highly recommend using this app for excursions and definitely Allen Dawson Tours for Belize-Belize it or not, it was UnBelizeable! Booya!

April 2017_br/_ This was an amazing tour. We arrived in belize and realized that the tour was 2 hours behind ship time. The tour guide was there already_br/_ and was willing to go early if all people for the tour had arrived, so we left 1 hour early which was great. Allen Dawson was our guide and_br/_ made the experience worth it. He had lots and lots of facts and stories to tell us on the way to Altun Ha as he was born and raised there._br/_ Great experience

This was our first time to tour a mayan ruin, so we don't have anything to compare it with. The tour guide was friendly and ready and waiting for us. We were an hour early because we weren't sure of the time difference from the ship, but they were there and suggested a place for us to wait bathrooms, drinks. They kept to the schedule and had cold water and drinks for us. The city tour was very informative and everything went well.

We had an amazing time on this tour. The meeting place was easy to find, the bus was comfortable. Alan, the tour operator and his son were very professional. We learned so much about Belize City and Altun Ha Mayan site. The drive to Altun Ha is about 30 miles but Alan provided interesting information throughout the drive so it did not seem that long. The road is a bit bumpy, so be prepared for that. We had a good amount of time to explore at the Mayan site and even had time to check out a few souvenir stands. Highly recommend!!

Allen Dawson, who was my tour guide, to the Altun Ha Mayan tour did an outstanding job as an orator, and I highly recommend him for future trips to Belize. Allen Dawson is extremely knowledgeable of Belize City as well and this tour was outstanding as well.

Excellent introduction to Belize. Driver/guide arrived at the departure point very early, which was reassuring to those of us who also arrived early. He was very articulate and informed, providing interesting insights into Belize's history, culture and economy, anticipating questions quite well. Ruins were close-by so the half-day tour wasn't dominated by a boring drive to the site.

The tour of Belize City was quite informative. The Altun Ha Mayan Site was well maintained and not crowded during the day we were there. We climbed the ruins and learning a little bit about the Mayan culture. We highly recommend the tour and our guide Allen.

We had a wonderful day with Allen Dawson tours. He was very pleasant and thorough on all points of interests during our city tour. . Interesting history and culture. You get an opportunity to see Baron Bliss Light House, St. Johns Cathedral, the Old Belize Swing Bridge, and downtown Belize City .He gave us a good outline of life in Belize too. Next stop was the Altun Ha Mayan Site. This is a well maintained, lovely, relaxing place, not crowded during the day we were there. Climbing the ruins and learning a little bit about the Mayan culture was well worth it. We also had a chance to visit the Museum on site and shop. Overall, we had a wonderful day in Belize City. Thanks Allen for a great time!

This was an excellent tour at a reasonable price. There were only 6 of us on this tour and the tour guide did a wonderful job providing background information on every site we visited. It was also a beautiful day which made the Mayan site even better than expected.

Really enjoyed this tour. The guide was very knowledgable and friendly. She was very willing to answer questions and had a perfect command of English. We even managed to climb one of the pyrimids on a specially constructed stairway so as not to damage the monument.

This tour by Allan and his assistant/son Jeff is not to be missed. The hour-plus ride to the ruins flew by thanks to Allan's informative and entertaining narrative. He's clearly very proud of his country and loves to share his knowledge. The ruins were spectacular. While my 16-year-old son was less than thrilled we were going to see Mayan ruins, he left exclaiming that it was the best part of our cruise.

Eventually, I was only one on the day. It became a private tour. Allan was the guide starting from Belize city history. very informative. I didn't see anyone else in the Mayan site. I recommend this tour for everyone. You will definitely need insect repellent at the Mayan site.

Our tour guide for this excursion was Allen.. He is a native of Belize and a very personable individual. He first gave us a tour of the city. His knowledge of the city was vast and we learned a lot about how the people here live. He stopped to point out wildlife along the way as well. The Altun Ha Mayan Site was very enjoyable. Allen explained every detail of the site. We learned so much about the people who lived here, how and why they built their community as they did, and how they lived. Allen shared his knowledge of the exotic plants and trees in the area as well. If we had just walked around this site without Allen and his vast knowledge, it certainly would not have been as enjoyable. We were provided with cool drinks before during and after the trip as well. I would highly recommend this excursion. A!!!!

Allen and Jeffrey were wonderful. On way to the site, pointed out local flora and fauna. At site, provided history of discovery of the site and what the monuments represented. It was a very hot day and we were provided very cold beverages of all kinds. Very hospitable. Highly recommend.

Amazing tour guide and a really interesting tour! It took forever to get off of our cruise ship because of the Belize tender boats and we were 15 minutes late and the tour had already taken off. The son waited for us and drove us to meet the van so we wouldn't miss the whole tour. The van was comfortable and the commentary was super interesting. The ruins were really enjoyable as well. You get to climb some of the ruins and there are snack stands and craft stands with really interesting local finds!

We had a mix up on dates and times, but this was rectified. The four hour tour included 1 hour of seeing Beliez City by car, 2 hours to get to/from Ruins and one hour at the ruins. The ruins were impressive and the guide was excellent. We were the only two on the tour. Cost was favorable ie, 30 cheaper...compared with ship shore excursions.

The meeting site was outside of the port terminal. Glad the directions emphatically stated to use the restroom at the port terminal before walking to the lighthouse. As long as you saw where the Belize City Baron Bliss Lightnouse was when you got off the tender boat, then locating it after walking through the small port terminal should not be a problem. Suggest the port terminal have a sign indicating exit and another sign indicating the DIRECTION of the lighthouse._br/_ The tour turned out to be a private tour as only my spouse and I signed up. Allen was our guide and a great one ! He showed much professionalism obvious in the amount of knowledge he had about Belize and the Altun Ha Mayan site._br/_ The Altun Ha site is what you see in the Viator pictures. Very green and well maintained. There is a small new museum which visitors should see.
