Antwerp Half-Day Trip from Brussels

Brussels, Belgium

Wander ancient cobblestone streets and discover centuries of Belgian history round every corner on this 5.5-hour tour of Antwerp from Brussels. Visit top city attractions such as the Butcher’s Hall and Market Square with your guide. Admire beautiful Baroque masterpieces by Peter Paul Rubens at the Cathedral of Our Lady and marvel at the extraordinary Antwerp railway station. Explore the Museum Aan de Stroom and the Diamond Pavilion, where Belgium’s rich history and heritage come to life.

After a convenient pickup from your Brussels hotel, hop aboard your air-conditioned coach to begin the journey to Antwerp, Belgium’s second largest city. Once home to famous 17th-century painter, Peter Paul Rubens, Antwerp is a beautifully preserved city with many characterful buildings and a rich heritage to discover.

First, head to the National redoubt of Belgium — Antwerp’s ancient fortress — and begin a walking tour through the city. Stroll along the ancient streets with your guide and take in highlights such as the Butcher’s Hall and Market Square. Visit the Cathedral of Our Lady (entrance fee included) and marvel at ‘The Elevation of the Cross’, ‘The Descent from the Cross’, ‘The Ascension of the Virgin’ and ‘The Resurrection of the Virgin’ — four famous paintings by Rubens himself. At the conclusion of your walking tour, enjoy a little free time to explore Antwerp at your leisure.

Continue on to Antwerp's main railway station, finished by 1905, and marvel at its outstanding architecture and grandeur.

Head onward to the port, where the new MAS (Museum Aan de Stroom) museum and Diamond Pavilion await. Here, gain valuable insight into the complex role Antwerp has played in the world over the centuries and learn of the lifecycle of a diamond from rough stone to twinkling beauty.

Enjoy panoramic views out over the port from the ninth floor of the MAS then, when it’s time to leave Antwerp behind, hop back aboard your coach for the return journey to Brussels.

Excellent!

This trip was far too short and limited in showing us the sights of Antwerp. I have taken plenty of 'free' walking tours of European cities and those are packed with up to date information about the city's main sights. The tour guide, as pleasant as he was, was not engaging and gave the commentary as though he was reading from a travel guide. It was very expensive for what we got in return.

Very disappointing tour. We only saw 2 cathedrals and the Antwerp train station. There was more to see in this city and was not worth it. The guide was smoking as he was walking with us which was in appropriate. Would not recommend this tour at all.

This tour was seriously lacking and very misleading. There was no provided itinerary to plan the trip, the guide seemed to have been drinking and was constantly smoking and a large portion of the tour was observed at night when it was too dark to see anything. It should definitely start earlier.

The tour guide was terrible. He criticized passengers and although i think that he was fairly knowledgeable, he was not particularly forthcoming. He has few comments about even the most obvious features. He was bored and it was obvious that he would rather be someplace else. Even at the end of the trip, after he solicited gratuities, he was still impolite. i choose this tour because it was a Viator excursion. We have had great success with Viator but I would not include this among them. Apntwerp was great, spoiled only by the tour guide.

Tour guide didn't believe me when I told him my seat companion was missing and not on bus. He insisted his head count was correct and the bus driver left for the next stop. Meanwhile my seat companion had to taxi over to the next tour bus stop where he admitted he had made a mistake allegedly his first in over 40 years. In addition the tour guide was not informative about what we were seeing and we never did see any of the diamond district which is why we booked the tour. The hotel pickup was late and somewhat disorganized. This was our second Brussels area tour and we were looking forward to Antwerp since the first tour was marvelous.Very dissatisfied and disappointed.

Frank was our guide for this tour and unfortunately I have to say he was the worst guide I and my friends have ever experienced. While he was knowledgeable about the sights of the city, he also told us that he was nearing retirement age and that was obvious from his utterly disinterested attitude towards his group, he spoke with as much enthusiasm as a recorded message and failed completely to interact with the group, he also smoked cigarettes as he walked and discarded the butts in the street, yuk!_br/_ Antwerp Cathedral was excellent and the view from the Port building lovely but the trip was spoiled by our guide's total lack of enthusiasm for his job._br/_ We also thought we would at least hear something of Antwerp's history in the diamond industry but nothing was even mentioned!_br/_ In short a very diasappointing tour and a waste of both time and money.

Antwerp is a nice and clean city with couple of great attractions to see see and visit. It worth to visit it in a half-day trip from Brussels if you only want to see most important attractions only without spending time strolling arount the city. It is recommended to spend full day in Antwerp and include the Antwerp zoo very small but nice and had dinner in the center.

Very nice place to visit. We enjoyed the drive up to Antwerp and the city itself. There were several interesting buildings and places to see. The guide was not very good, since he explained very little and just stuck to his program rigidly. Despite that, the trip is very worthwhile and is recommended.

It was a very informative and comprehensive tour. We would have liked to go into the castle, however, time would not permit that. Be prepared for a lot of walking.

Good excursion from Brussells. Nice ride to Antwerp, the tour of the old city its cathedral and streets was very interesting. After the agitation in Brussells, it is quite calm in Antwerp. The driver Ricardo and the guide Frank did a good job, describing a lot of the points of interest and managing through heavy trafgic because of a lot of construction in town. A short but nice stop was the railway station which is beautiful. I would have loved more time to do a short visit to the Rubens House or the Plantain-Moretus House. Nice afternoon!

We where a party of 2 male friends who had booked a 4 night stay in Brussels and had pre booked a half day Antwerp trip last November with Viator, as it was a little out of season there were only 12 people on the coach._br/_ We joined the coach and set off to Antwerp the tour guide was very knowledgeable and had a good sense of humour as did the coach driver. We would highly recommend this trip._br/_ In addition to this we made our own way to visit Waterloo and as this being out of season we were unable to do a guided tour so we did it by way of Bus and Taxi and had a very good day out but would recommend this trip to be by way of Viator._br/_ We also squeezed in a trip to Leuven by train and visited the Stella Artois Brewery, and had a very good trip. _br/_ To end this review we would thoroughly recommend Viator._br/_ John Murphy

Our guide, Johan, was the best! The trip was excellent. Johan loves his job and explains everything with patience and interest. He makes funny jokes and he waits for everyone in order to give details about the sight. Great character! Also the city is very beautiful, totally worth it! If i ever go back to Belgium, Antwerp will be a must see.

The best of five tours we took with this company. Mostly because the guide was enthusiastic and loved the city. Had an adequate amount of time to walk through the old city, but as with all beautiful old cities, not nearly enough time to see everything. Very underrated city. In my opinion equal to or better than anything else in Belgium.

So much to see and appreciate in one day: the Market Square surrounded by century-old buildings Cathedral of our Lady, peppered with medieval paintings such as Rubens and not to be missed Sint Paulus Monastery where you find more medieval paintings done by masters the old-town tour and finally the Antwerp Train Station, combining elegance of both old and new architecture. Soak everthing you see, it's worth your time.

Great way to see Antwerp if you are short on time. Spend a night there if you have the luxury of doing that. Our trilingual guide Bruno, started off well, but needs to adapt his itinerary in special circumstances. We were really disappointed and extremely frustrated at not being able to enter the Cathedral even though the entry was included in our ticketCan we get a refund for that?. Due to traffic restrictions we were delayed in reaching the Cathedral square. And after reaching there, the guide chose to take the group through the old streets on a walking tour, instead of first getting us inside the cathedral. He got us there just a few minutes after 3 only to learn that it was closed and we couldn't enter. He knew the timings, 10am -3pm, didn't he?! If he had turned the itinerary around, we wouldn't have missed seeing the Rubens paitings in the Cathedral, which was the main attraction of taking this trip. He tried to blame the traffic for the delay, but I feel he could have gotten us in had he been thinking on his feet. The tour company should keep itself updated about processions or other such events and plan accordingly. Disappointed.

Good tour, but no free time in Antwerp. Also I was supposed to be picked up from the hotel and dropped off, and it did not happen. No pick up and no drop off. Had to walk to the tour company office.

Tour was mediocre at best...Antwerp is not a pretty city, although they do have a few highlights..ie: the train station. Our guide Frank needs to retire...no enthusiasm at all, even though you can tell he quite knowledgeable. We signed up for the English tour and got a French/Spanish/English tour....everything translated in all 3 languages...ANNOYING as hell. Made the tour less interesting...especially when I speak French, and I knew he wasn't relaying the same information in English. Potentially a good tour with a different guide in ONE language.

There is really not much to see in Antwerp except the basilica that has the Reubens paintings. But that was the last part of the tour and it was so rushed as the church closes at 5 pm. We spent more time at the diamond store as someone was interested in buying. It would have been better if we did the basilica first.

This tour, in my opinion, was overcrowded with 51 people. During the walking portion in Antwerp, we could hear half was what the guide said. I've done a considerable amount of tours through Viator. This one ranks at the bottom. Ironic that on this trip to Europe we experienced the best and worst of all the tours we've ever booked through Viator.

This was a very good tour, though I was disappointed that the tour did not include the diamond area, because it was a Saturday tour. This should have been explained by Viator on the website. I might have switched to another day, as of course Antwerp is so well known as the diamond center and I wanted to see it. That said, it still was a very good tour with our excellent guide, Stephan, who conducted the tour in 3 languages clearly and seamlessly. He seemed very knowledgeable when asked questions and was quite personable as well. I think we explored the harbor area in place of the diamond district and it was interesting for the most part.

Good round-trip transportation! FAR TOO MANY PEOPLE ON THE TOUR! 48 people on the tour and the guide would be speaking sentence by sentence in 4 different languages so i started drifting off- groups need to be 12 max as there's a bit of walking and waiting for members of the group takes away from the beauty of the tour.

This tour was fun but I didn't get to see any Diamond shops because it was a Holiday so they were closed. I wish I would've know before booking as I would've picked a different tour.

Antwerp is a nice city, but I expected more from the tour. Firstly, we had over an hour of free time in Antwerp and there were no tips on what we should/could visit. I would have seen more if I had done the trip myself rather than having a tour guide. On top of it, there were no diamond production visit! This was one of the main reasons why I signed up for the tour. Thus, I wouldn't recommend this tour.
