The Classic Budapest Gastro Experience with Wine Tasting

Budapest, Hungary

Discover and experience the traditional ingredients of Hungarian cuisine on our classical walking tour!
Explore the traditional ingredients of Hungarian cuisine and enjoy the cultural experience while tasting some typical food of the country. Your local guide will introduce you to everyday life of Hungarian people through some hidden places of Budapest. Join our four-hour long walking tour and enjoy the experience!

Exploring Budapest through its food and drinks is the best way to do it! Our food, wine, and cultural walking tour begins at The Central Market Hall - one of Europe’s largest and most spectacular indoor markets - and continues through the charming nearby neighbourhood. Be sure to come with an appetite. You will need it on this tour!

At the Central Market Hall we will begin getting acquainted with Hungarian cuisine through the great variety and abundance of ingredients (which are mostly local and seasonal) on display. We will discuss the history of the building, the culture of eating and drinking in Hungary, and the everyday cooking and eating habits. The tour also includes an introduction to Hungarian paprika and will reveal why it is so special, how Hungarian cooks use it, and how it is produced. After tasting a few carefully selected things at the market, we will head out to the surrounding neighbourhood and visit a few more places. Lunch will be at a traditional restaurant, where we will taste a special Hungarian spirit as well. No day in Budapest is complete without dessert, so we will also stop at a cafe visited only by locals to taste some very special local dumplings.

The tour will end with a tasting of three quintessential Hungarian wines. During the tasting your guide will introduce you to the Hungarian wine regions, varietals, and styles. This tour will give you a taste of the traditional side of Hungarian cuisine, as well as the modern artisan producers and speciality food shops of the area.

We try our very best to cater for dietary requirements but due to local food customs we cannot guarantee that this will be possible in all cases. Options for vegetarians, guests with allergies and religious dietary restrictions may be very limited.

Wow! We loved this tour and our guide was fantastic! We tasted food, snacks and drinks that were very unusual to us but common in Budapest, exactly what you want in a tour. So much food, not a dud in the mix. As usual, our guide was full of history and interesting stories about the food and locale, just so much fun - do it if you go to Budapest!_br/_ Tour started in the morning and lasted several hours, so worth every penny.

Our tour guide was Kristina who took us to the Market Hall to taste some Hungarian meats and pickles which were very tasty. We then went for a hearty soup at a restaurant and dessert at a further restaurant. Kristina explained when and how Hungarians liked to eat this type of food. We finished with a wine tasting in a trendy bar in the ruin pubs area. Throughout the tour Kristina told us about Hungarian traditions, life in Hungary and where we should also visit. At the end we felt we had spent the day with a delightful friend. We would highly recommend this tour and particularly Kristina

Well what a fabulous place Hungary is. Our guide was friendly and informative and starting off with a liquor digestive? got us on our way around a most interesting market place offering delights such as fried bread, salami of course and other traditional dishes. a great way to get into and around the city and mix with the locals we ended up at a wine tasting place learning all about the wines of Hungary and completed with cheese and an informative host.

Excellent tour and tour guide! Food and more food and more food at the Great Market Hall, at the restaurant, at the chocolatier, at the patisserie. A great introduction to the foods of Hungary. I left the tour before the wine bar, but it was absolutely worth the money and time.

We did a food and wine tour of Budapest a few weeks ago with our guide Szofia. The great thing was there was only four of us so it was quite a personal tour where we were lead by Szofia to indulge in the magnificent food and the wine of Budapest and the surrounding regions. The market has a fantastic atmosphere and when we left there on foot and explored other locations eating and drinking our way around the streets of Budapest we had a thoroughly relaxed and enjoyable experience. The lunch Belvarosi Disznotoros was fantastic as we tasted a wonderfully wide range of food with every bite a delicious treat in an enjoyable atmosphere. The wine tasting at Tasting Time was also exceptional with delightful wines and delicious array of cheeses provided. Szofia provided a wonderful tour experience throughout with her breadth of information and her fantastic personality, style and relaxed conversation.

And it was a lot of food. Don't eat breakfast. This tour was well worth the cost and would highly recommend it to anyone planning a visit to this beautiful city.

This tour was fabulous! It complimented Budapest wonderfully and provided a delightful history lesson of life behind the Iron Curtain. My tour guide was knowledgeable, interested in sharing her heritage and delightfully funny. The places we stopped along the route were relevant, interesting and hidden gems that I returned to after the tour. The wine tasting at the end of the tour was the perfect way to conclude a day of Hungarian history through food. This tour is the way to start your time in Budapest!

We arrived as suggested at the Market Hall fifteen minutes before the start of the tour. We had difficulty locating the guide and our group. Perhaps the guide should have a distinct placard. Once underway the tour was very good in a small group. The guide was interesting and the experience of a wide variety of drinks and food enjoyable. It was a good introduction to Hungarian cuisine.

Our guide was Barbara and she was full of information and very charming. She met us at the market and even though we had been there the day before, we saw and tasted many new things with Barbara's help._br/_ All of the tasting stops we made had great local food. These were places we would never have found on our own. The last stop for wine tasting was fun and Barbara was full of information about Hungarian wines._br/_ Our group of six was the perfect size for this adventure. One of the other ladies on our tour and I had taken a similar tour with Viator in San Juan, Puerto Rico in May. We chose this tour because that one was so well done. We will choose Viator again when booking tours!_br/_ Thanks for making this day in Budapest so special._br/_ Cynthia N.

If you want to experience some of the Hungarian Foods, Wines and place to eat food in Budapest this is one tour we would recommend. Warning - DO NOT EAT A BIG BREAKFAST. We started at 10am in the morning the the central market. We started with a Digestif (that should have been warning enough) In the central market we sampled flat bread (with garlic topping), and meats (2 types of sausage, pork, tongue, horse and duck). The final stop in the central market was at a family owned chess and mile (unpasteurized) stand to sample goat, cow smoked and sheep cheeses. Leaving the market our guide Barbara provided us with information on the area we were walking through, history...We arrived at a local lunch place Belvarosi Disznotoros (with a line to the door) to have lunch (a very full lunch (duck, pork, salads,...). We then stopped at one of the family owned pastry shops Auuguszt for deserts (4 wonderful desert). Finally it was on to wine at a wine store / bar. Our guide Barbara provide us with many recommendations on food and beverage recommendation. Note we had enough food for the day and had only a very light meal that night.

Barbara was simply terrific. The tour was very casual and relaxed she answered all of out questions and provided a very wide range of tastes of Hungary. The Market was especially interesting and she knew where to go and what to sample that stretched our adventure to the max. We cannot say enough great things about the pace and tastes Barbara introduced us to over a wide range including sausages, cheese, baked goods, wine, etc., etc. The walking was at a very leisurely pace and not at all tiring.
