Danube Bend Day Trip from Budapest

Budapest, Hungary

Take an excursion into Hungary's history on this popular Danube Bend full day trip. Traveling by air-conditioned coach, you'll visit the gorgeous old towns of Visegrad, Esztergom and Szentendre, enjoy a three-course lunch and take a River Danube cruise - a highlight of any trip to Hungary!

The day trip takes you to Visegrad, with its medieval citadel and romantic ruins of the former royal residence, which you'll see from outside. Then it's on to Esztergom for an interior visit of the town's famous cathedral.

After enjoying a three-course lunch, you will continue on to the Baroque artists' village of Szentendre. Here you'll take a guided walk through the town and visit the Caprice Hungarian Jewelry Center.

Your tour returns to Budapest by boat on the River Danube (May 01 to September 30 only, tide permitting). During other times or at low tide the tour returns to the city center by bus.

Pick-up was on time and bus was nice. Cathedral was Rome quality. Very much worth seeing. Visegrad castle was nice. The food at the restaurant was so-so, but the soup was great!. The small town we went to was quite nice and since we weren't there for an extremely long time it was good enough to do some tourist shopping, exploring, and getting a snack or drink. The boat ride back to Budapest was nice. All-in-all a nice day of activities. I would recommend it to anybody wanting to get out of town for a day.

The Danube is such a wonderful river, one has to see it and hear about it's great history. Nowhere better than on this amazing trip.

We are rating this 5 stars simply because this was a great value and convenient option to see a couple small Hungarian towns and visit Slovakia for a few minutes. We had a great time on this tour!

Our guide was knowledgeable . Not a lot of personality, but I learned a lot, I would take this tour again

We took this tour on Easter Sunday, so that may have affected our experience. For example, we took a 20-minute break for coffee on the way to the Basilica in Esztergom in order to let the long Easter mass conclude. Then we drove over the bridge into Slovakia for beautiful views of the Basilica. Once at the cathedral, we went up to an overlook before heading into the church itself. We had enough time to wander around the main cathedral but not enough time to climb up to the viewing area or explore the crypts.

This was a tremendous tour. It was a wet day but no matter the knowledgable tour guide was interesting and informative. A nice lunch stop lunch provided made the tour great value. Sitting back to watch the countryside roll by made for a relaxing and enjoyable day. All in all I would recommend this tour to others looking to see a bit of Hungary outside of the city.

This was a long day. It was ok. The highlight was the church on the hill and the boat trip back sailing on the Danube back to the center of town. We could have done without the rest of the itinerary.

I enjoyed this trip and I loved our guide! She was so adorable, very friendly and had a wealth of information. She had in-depth insight into every single question that was asked of her. I also loved that this tour would stop at scenic places as well as historical ones. It was a nice mix of history, culture and scenery! Also met some great people!

It was an okay tour. I wouldn't say it's a must. You can spend more time in Budapest discovering all the hidden parts of it and enjoy it more.

This was the worst tour that I have ever been on. The only decent aspect was the meal. The tour guide just memorized a bunch of historical details and droned on. Two hours at some unremarkable hamlet? The folks at the tour guide office were pleasant and helpful but no river cruise makes for a flop

OUTSTANDING tour of Esztergom, Sztendre, and Visegrad, with the intense Hungarian history displayed at those sites. beyond gorgeous, and it was our chance to see the BEAUTIFUL Hungarian countryside in the area of the Bend. Comfortable, with highly knowledgeable and nice guides. I recommend this in the highest terms.

The bus part of the tour was good, but the return boat cruise was a bit boring. A good way to cover three scenic places in one day trip with a nice meal in visegrad. Recommend

Excellent day trip. See the country, little town of saint Andreas and the trip back on the Danube was beautiful. Lunch provided in the tour was not grand. Restuarant very characteristic but waiter service was unprofessional and lacking.

Great tour, very interesting. Especially enjoyed the cruise down the Danube River to Budapest. Also the lunch was very nice. I wish the guide had pointed out the sights as we were passing them when we were on the bus. He would just say, And coming up is ...... and talk about it but half the time I didn't know when we were passing the sight.

Perhaps my rating is due to the fact that we had to travel in van for a 2 hour bumpy ride - each way - rather than boat the boat doesn't run in October. Unless you have a burning need to see the historical Esztergom Basilica there are other, more interesting things to do in Budapest. Granted there is a beautiful overlook during lunch, and a somewhat interesting stop in Szentendre, but for the time spent, again, you might wanna further explore Budapest. Another mitigating aspect was the uninspired delivery of our guide.

Review by:   Kenneth P,    October 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
The ride and sites were interesting, but the guide had to speak at least three languages to accommodate the group. While thats impressive, she didnt pause between explanations in the different languages so she was two three sentences in before I realized she was speaking English again. I missed quite a bit of the information because of that and thats the reason we took the tour. The lunch was in a really beautiful location, but the food was not nice nor was the service. The cruise back to Budapest was on an adequate boat, I guess, but we were never told if there were life jackets. Glad they werent needed. Wouldnt repeat this tour. It was overall disappointing.

This was a good tour and we enjoyed it. We saw some of the Hungarian countryside, the sites we visited were incredible and ending in the village of Szentendre was amazing and thoroughly enjoyed seeing it. The boat ride back was really nice and offered inside or outside seating.. This tour was worth the money, time and was represented exactly as it was printed on the Viator site.

The weather was poor that day which did not help. The tour was 'low energy' and I would have expected that in poor weather they would make modifications to the tour to account for that - for example, the guide should do his talks in sheltered areas, not out in the open. The tour included a 3 course lunch at the top of a wonderful vista however we were seated at the back of the restaurant even though it was empty - and the food was lukewarm and not very appetizing. We were unlucky with the weather but we still felt the tour could have been better.

I was so excited for this tour, especially visiting the village of Szentendre. But I was disappointed! The tour was 45 minutes late leaving because we were waiting for people who never arrived. The lunch was mediocre - over cooked chicken and bland boiled potatoes with only water to drink in the included price. The lunch was very slow to be served which consumed two hours of our tour - way too long! When we finally got to the artist's village we only had 30 minutes to explore because the boat back to Budapest was on a fixed schedule, of course. The tour guide, Helene, brushed off any questions about the schedule and making up the time we lost due to the late departure. Overall I was dissatisfied with this tour.

The drive to Esztergom was beautiful and the basilica did not disappoint. We drove by Visegrad but did not make a visit which we had paid for in our tour. After lunch our visit to Szentendre was everything we expected....not crowded and plenty of time to explore the village. Our tour ended one hour early, which was probably the amount of time we should have spent for a photo stop at Visegrad. Asked the guide about not visiting Visegrad and he was dismissive....!

The guide was not interacting with us compared to other guides. Perhaps because of the rain on that day. The company should either provide umbrellas or ponchos on loan to the group.

We traveled with Helena and she was an excellent guide. Had a bit of a mix up being picked up from our hotel, as another company that ran the same trip showed up and we went with them, only to find out our tour was waiting for us. Although we were confirmed, no one ever did come to our hotel from the correct trip thankfully the other tour company dropped us off with the proper company. Helena was full of information to really tie the story together of the places we were seeing. We were sad to learn as we drove past that the trip does not actually stop at the Visegrad fortress anymore, and we were told that most tours don't anymore. We stopped for lunch in Visegrad at a restaurant above the fortress so we had an excellent view, and it was good, but we were sad to not see the fortress up close. Excellent trip all around and worth it for the cost.

This was the WORST TOUR EVER !!!!! The provider Eurama was horrible. It was my understanding that this tour would be in English. Got on the bus only to find out the whole day was going to be spent hearing French, German and English. The English spoken was extremely hard to understand and spoken very infrequently. German and French was spoken fluently. The guide ran ahead of everyone on the tour and when asked to slow down just ignored the request. Her main interest was in running ahead to be with another woman who was not even on our tour. Seemed to be a friend of hers not really sure. Moved very quickly whether the group was with her or not. When we got to the Bascillica we had to climb very steep steps because the elevator only accommodated 6 people at a time. Very poor planning, groups should have schedules so you don't have to waste half an hour to ride the elevator. The last stop we were given free time and had to return to bus at 4:30. Although it was no fault of the tour that we had inclement weather the bus should have stayed in the depot area like the other buses so if someone returned earlier we could have boarded. Instead we stood out in the crazy weather waiting for him. It should have NEVER been. We were soaking wet, cold and left out in the elements while other tours passengers were able to wait for their fellow riders on their warm cozy buses. There seemed to be no accountability at all.

During this visit - in no particular order - you will visit the Basilica at Esztergom, which is spectacular inside and out. It is the 3rd largest Church in Europe, and the largest in Hungary. You will also view the Basilica from Sturovo in Slovakia, which is a short coach ride away._br/_ The ruins of the castle at Visegrad are viewed from the coach as you travel to a sumptuous set menu lunch 3 courses at the wonderful Nagyvillam etterem, which is served with bottled water - other drinks can be ordered but are not part of the paid package and you must pay for these directly at the restaurant tips to waiters and indeed your tour guide and the coach driver are optional additions, so be sure to take enough local currency with you to cover this . There is a viewing terrace where you can see again the ruins of the castle._br/_ The 3rd place you will visit is Szentendre St Andrews, which is a very charming cobblestoned market town, with many traditional craft/cloth shops, museums, restaurants and confectioners. There are plentiful ATM's around the main street should you wish to make purchases and have not brought enough cash. There is a Mediterranean feel to this place, and the buildings are painted in an array of colours. Simply beautiful.

The itinerary of this trip is nice but the tour guide made it unbearable. She frantically spewed facts for six hours without hardly stopping to breathe. The guests were overwhelmed and astounded by her lack of awareness. I recommend seeing the Danube Bend but with a different tour company.

Our tour guide Sylvie was excellent. We had a private tour of the city. My daughter and I would recommend her for all your tours. She was Well versed in the history of the city and answered all of our questions. The highlight of the tour was meeting Padre Anastasio , what a joy.

This is an amazing tour and brings you to some of Hungary's most beautiful places. The pace of the tour, the stops and the guide/driver were all excellent. The included lunch was lovely and I was lucky that this tour was not cancelled as I was the only one. It was like my own private tour which was lovely. I am so grateful they didn't cancel it as I would have missed out on seeing the beautiful Danube Bend. Go on this tour, you won't regret it! An amazing and unforgettable experience!

I'm not generally a fan of group tours but this one was very good. Our guide Helen was a local with 15 years experience. She was outstanding sharing her knowledge of history at the Basilica and castle we visited along with a quick trip over a bridge to Slovakia, lunch at a hunting lodge and time in Szendtre, a small arts and crafts village not far from Budapest. The coach was comfortable, the lunch substantial and a great time with new friends. Highly recommend this trip.
