Buenos Aires Bike Tour: Recoleta and Palermo Districts

Buenos Aires, Argentina

See some of northern Buenos Aires’ best-known districts – Recoleta, Puerto Madero and Palermo – on a fun and entertaining bike tour. With a knowledgeable guide, you’ll enjoy easy pedaling to top city attractions like Recoleta Cemetery (where Evita lies) and Barrio Norte. Admire the city’s many grassy parks, historical architecture and beautiful homes, plus enjoy the fresh air.

After meeting your guide in San Telmo, listen to a quick safety briefing before receiving your bike (a comfy beach cruiser) and helmet. Then hop on to begin your leisurely ride.

Begin in Puerto Madero, the newest neighborhood in the city. Its old docks have been transformed into restaurants, lofts and offices, which boast incredible views of the city.
From there, ride through Recoleta, famous for its French-style buildings and large parks. See Recoleta Cemetery, where legendary Argentinians like Eva Peron (aka Evita) are buried, and pass through Barrio Norte, an informal name given to a lively section of Recoleta around Santa Fe Avenue.

Then head toward the district of Palermo – Buenos Aires’ largest neighborhood. Pedal to Palermo Woods, the city’s largest park, where you can admire its rose garden with more than 400 rose bushes. See more of the park’s sights, including the Buenos Aires Zoo, the Botánical Garden, Plaza Italia, Galileo Galilei Planetarium and the Spaniard’s Monument.

Throughout your tour, your guide will tell you about Buenos Aires’ rich history and provide commentary about the sites you’re passing. You’ll also break periodically to stretch your legs and take photos. Your tour concludes 3.5 hours later at the original departure point.

I am a family of 4 with 2 kids aged 12 and 14. 20 km ride over 3.5 hours was very enjoyable and we saw the city from a different perspective. Cycles were not perfect but very functional and well maintained. Very flat route so at an average speed of only about 6 kmh, it was not taxing at all. The guides did a good job stopping traffic and keeping us safe. We do this at every city we visit and it always rates highly in our memories.

We had fun on this tour and saw a lot of Buenos Aires, but with a small group of only 5 riders our guide still did not manage to keep the group together. Instead of waiting for everyone to cross busy streets together, she would cross on a green light and often leave 2 or 3 people who would get caught in a red light. At one point three of us lost her in the traffic and could not see which street she rode down. Although we were told we would be riding primarily in bike safe areas, for the last 20 or 25 minutes we were riding in serious rush hour traffic with cars, buses, taxis, without benefit of bike lanes. Some of the bike helmets were missing the adjustable pieces and could not be properly fitted. That said, we saw a lot and had interesting stops, but riding in very heavy traffic at the end of the day was dangerous.

We thoroughly enjoyed our bike tour. Only one easy hill in the whole trip. We cycled with another couple and had a lady tour leader with a lad following us. It was a red hot day, but we went at a gentle pace with lots of stops at various points of interest. This is a great way to see many of the interesting sights of Buenos Aires. Most is on bike lanes, so don't worry about the traffic.

There’s the sightseeing, which was wonderful, and then there was the challenge of riding a bicycle on narrow lanes with zooming traffic and bouncing on cobblestone roads in the old part of town. The memory will stick with you. Palermo and Recoleta have wide open spaces for easy riding, beautiful!

I was fortunate enough that it was just me, so was really able to go at my own pace. The guide was very informative and had a ton of knowledge on the history of Buenos Aires. Most of the tour stuck to a bike path, there were a few parts that would've been trickier for larger groups. I can definitely recommend this.

Review by:   scott m,    March 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Lots of traffic and rushed. Guide had a schedule to keep. Other tours provide small snack or drink other than water. I felt there could have been more talking by the guide and some less famous sites included. Guide was nice but never bothered to ask our names. Overpriced for a basic ride.

This was awesome. My brother and I were the only ones who signed up for that time slot, so the tour guide took us all over the place.

It was nice to bike around this beautiful city but our tour guide was awful. Not only was she totally indifferent but her English was extremely poor, she was uninformed and she lost us there were only four of us total in the tour. I would recommend biking around the city but not with this tour.

Tour guide was excellent, however the bikes were a bit on the used/old side. If you require a bike with some comfort and gears, perhaps dig deep into the tour providers to see what they offer...

My son and I enjoyed our bike tour very much with Ezekiel. We learned a lot of history about Argentina. It was just the two of us, so very easy to ask questions and he was more than happy to answer.

Guide showed up after scheduled meeting time and then had us move to another nearby location, saying it was where we supposed to be. Tour took 4 hours 15 minutes at a slow, easy pace, with several stops to explore. Most of travel was on bike paths. Guide was okay with English. Guide showed everyone their nation's embassy.

Ezekiel guided us on a relaxed and Informative tour of two great neighbourhoods (8 Jan) way too large to explore on foot, and far cooler in the hot, humid summer, so excellent way to get a feel for a lovely part of Buenos Aires.

The tour guides did a great job. Even though the weather conditions they handled the situation extremely well. Although both were very young their knowledge of the city history was remarkable. Both deserved to be recognized by the management. Perhaps this is one of the best tour I ever experienced.

What a great tour! There were 6 in our group ranging from 14-50 yrs of age. Alex was a wonderful guide -- so full of knowledge about history and current events, funny and witty! The main streets were a little harrowing with the busy, busy traffic, but Alex maneuvered our group around the city in a safe manner and at a great pace. The riding was mostly on flat terrain with one uphill stretch at the end.

The guides were lovely and very knowledgable. The bikes were in poor condition though, a chain kept coming off one and another had a puncture. I also didn't feel very safe in the city traffic.

This is a great way to see Recoleta and Pelermo's significant sites. The tour guide was really knowledgeable and we could chat about different historical, cultural and societal moments. The bike paths are safe, some need a few repairs, and the ride through the famous parks is a must.

What an incredible time. Our guides, Iris and Nico where just the best. The passion they had for their city and unselfish desire to share as much knowledge started the vacation off perfectly. Do this tour before any other. You'll be amazed how much better your time in Buenos Aires will be. Thanks Nico and Iris!

A nice way to spend a comfortable 3-4 hours seeing the 'suburban' B.A. (mostly Racoleta and Palmero). Flat, easy pedalling. Our guide was excellent.... only problem, the details of where to meet in front of a restaurant are very poor and inaccurate... the personel in the restaurant new nothing of the bike tour and directed us to the monument in the centre of the square... had to ask a stranger for help. He called the tour office and sent_br/_ someone to get us.... bikes quite a bit out of date but adequate. Still was a fun experience.

My husband and I took this tour and are so glad we did! Our Tangol guide was highly knowledgeable and really customized the tour to make sure we saw the things we hoped to see. We were able to get off our bikes at several points: to walk through the rose gardens (El Rosedal) in el Parque Tres de Febrero, to tour the Recoleta Cemetery, and to see the changing of the guards at the Islas Malvinas War Memorial, and more. Our guide continued our tour, which was in the morning, right up until the start of the afternoon tour. We definitely got our money's worth! Wear sunscreen and be prepared for some traffic at the beginning and end of the tour. The rest of the trip will be at a leisurely pace.

This is a great way to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time. You should be an experienced bike rider as some of the ride is thru traffic, but most of it was on bike paths.

We enjoyed the Bike tour, although we were a little disappointed in that as it was a Sunday we were told we had to meet at the other end of the city, when we met the guide he took us back to the bike shop in a cab, which was a great waist of time?_br/_ I suggest the company rectify this situation?_br/_ Also part of the tour was on the roadway._br/_ My Wife was not real confident about this._br/_ Michael.

Tour guide was very knowledgeable and the bike ride was a very casual ride. Only at one point was there a bit of a climb up a hill. I would recommend being somewhat confident on a bike. At certain points on the tour, we were off the bike paths and on the actual roadways. Having the ability to look around at the traffic while keeping your bike in a straight line improves your safety. The ride is all done in single file, but be careful when simply following the person in front of you at road intersections. A traffic light can change mid-group and you don't want to get stuck in the middle of moving traffic. (Basic common sense but worth noting)

Buenos Aires is not a friendly town in itself, the less a bicycle friendly town. The bicycle lanes are very short, you mostly ride in the street and when you get to the crowded ones it gets a bit scary.
