Buenos Aires Bike Tour: San Telmo and La Boca Districts

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Explore Buenos Aires’ well-known neighborhoods in and around the city center and the Rio de la Plata on a fun-filled bike tour. With a knowledgeable guide, you’ll enjoy easy pedaling through top areas like San Telmo, La Boca and the Buenos Aires Ecological Reserve. See major attractions like Casa Rosada, Plaza de Mayo and Caminito, and admire the city’s renowned European-style architecture while enjoying the fresh air.

After meeting your guide in San Telmo, listen to a quick safety briefing before receiving your bike (a comfy beach cruiser) and helmet.
Begin with a cycle around San Telmo, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, known for its well-preserved colonial architecture. See its many attractions, including the Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Church, San Telmo Market and Dorrego Square, the heart of San Telmo. Observe life in the square’s cafes, bars and shops, and watch for spontaneous tango performances – San Telmo is the center of tango in Buenos Aires.
Next, ride into La Boca, Buenos Aires’ most colorful neighborhood, where a European atmosphere has remained strong since the neighborhood was settled by Italian immigrants. The district is popular with visitors for its brightly painted buildings, especially along the Caminito – the neighborhood’s main (pedestrianized) drag where you can see local artists selling their work.
Then, head to the newest neighborhood in the city: Puerto Madero. Its old docks have been transformed into restaurants, lofts and offices, which boast incredible views of the city. From there, continue to the Ecological Reserve, a 865-acre nature reserve that lies between the city and the Rio de la Plata.
Finally, visit Plaza de Mayo, the scene of all major political events in the country since the founding of Buenos Aires. Take a look at the Government House (Casa Rosada), the Cabildo, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the main public buildings.
Throughout your tour, your entertaining and informative guide will regale you with fun facts about Buenos Aires’ rich history and provide commentary about the sites you’re passing. You’ll also break periodically to stretch your legs and take photos, ending your tour in Plaza San Martin.

Highly recommended! We are two 70 year olds who have never biked in traffic so we were a little apprehensive about this trip but it was a highlight of our time in the city. A wonderful variety of stops and we learnt so much about the history of the south.

What a fantastic tour! Our bike tour was the highlight of our period in BA, such a great experience! Very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide, he gave us a real feel of a local. If you are in BA and would like to have a proper local experience you should definitely go on this tour! Highly recommend it!

Bike ride gives you a very different perspective than a tour bus. We thoroughly enjoyed the bike ride tour. Much more verbal explanation of area and you can stop and explore, too. My husband and I were the only ones on the tour but the guide still took us everywhere on the tour. The ride was on level ground and very easy to do.

Loved this tour, was a bit worried about riding a bike in the Buenos Aires traffic but the guide controlled everything very well. A great way to see the city.

I enjoyed the cycling and we covered a lot more ground than is possible walking - it took in La Boca and also the port area and the lagoons for example and we stopped in La Boca for 20 minutes to look around. A lot of it was on dedicated cycle lanes or through parks. Our guide did his best with providing English commentary but unfortunately I found his voice a little hard to follow and the stops seemed slightly too long as a result, but overall the trip was worthwhile.

Very enjoyable bike ride. Area is fairly flat so ride was very easy. Excellent tour guide. So much better than a bus tour.

The bike ride was something special and a lot of fun. The tour guide did a really good job at explaining historical aspects and monuments throughout BA! I hadn't rode a bike in 30 plus years, but the experience was the best and any one that does this tour should have a great time!

Very disappointing. Address listed was 3 miles from actual location......once we went to the address giv en when I called - we were then sent another 2 blocks from there. Tour was scheduled for 2 PM. Guide forgot that she was scheduled for a tour that day so did not show up until 3PM to start the tour.

Really good tour. Great local guide, Leo, who had very good knowledge of the areas we visited. We covered approximately 15km in the four hours, the cycling was at a steady pace and as long as you keep up with the group the traffic isn't a problem. There is one short uphill section, other than that mainly flat with a few cobblestones! I found it a great way to see the areas, good if you're short on time as you can cover a greater distance more easily than on foot.

Two interesting districts to visit and suited to bike touring. The guide was very knowledgeable, had very good English and was personable. The bike was a bit heavy and had clunky brakes which took a bit of getting used to. Nevertheless I would recommend the tour - I enjoyed it a lot.

Waited for over an hour before the tour started which was quite annoying but once it got going it was a really interesting trip which took in a lot of the main sights of the city, a lot of the tour is on road so you need to be a confident cyclist. Guide very friendly and informative.

Tour was excellent! Such a fantastic way to see the city - more efficient than a walking tour but more fun than a bus, and allows you to really get into the communities rather than observing from a distance. Would highly recommend!

This bike tour was sensational. It was great to get in there amongst the real Buenos Aires under the guidance of a local. Our guide , whose name unfortunately escapes me right now, was interesting, knowledgeable and gave us useful tips on safety and places to go. We would definitely recommend this tour.

Tour provides good coverage of BA, but may actually be tricky for unconfident cyclists or people not used to cycling on public streets in general. The guide (Nico) was responsible and took care in guiding us around the streets of BA.

We enjoyed our trip but thought it was quite hazardous for our group which spent a lot of time in very heavy traffic and riding down very crowded walking streets._br/_ The guide was very knowledgeable and we saw everything we planned and more._br/_ Our group consisted of about 10 people and riding in single file there were several occasons where the last few people in the group would miss lights and were left stranded. The guide often noticed this and would wait with the group on the other side of the road. I am unsure as to remedy this apart from limiting the the size of the group and mentioning in your flyers that ts tour is not for inexperienced cyclists. Hope this helps. Regards William

It was such a fantastic way to see Buenos Aires. I only had the weekend there and if I hadn't taken the bike tour wouldn't have seen half the things I was able to see or learn so much about the city and the history of the place. Bernard was the perfect guide, fun and smart and very knowledgeable. Thank you - highly recommended.

This bike tour of San Telmo and La Boca was everything I had hoped it to be ... a casual cycle through two of Buenos Aires most popular neighbourhoods. As it turned out, I was the only one on the tour so had the guide to myself. The guide was on time and very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this tour.

A great way to visit areas you would normaly not go to .... But is part of the buzz .... And the city as a whole. And we had a great guide !

The bike ride is definitely not for beginners as you will be cycling on uneven, pebbly roads and among traffic most of the time. It was a pity that my friend had to back out from the tour as she is only a beginner cyclist. Nonetheless, I continued with a solo tour with my guide Sebestian and got to zip through an ecological reserve, parks, the port area, La Boca (keep ur cameras) and San Telmo. Exhilarating and a great work out ;)

We are so glad we did the bike tour in Buenos Aires. What a great way to see the city. You must be at least a little athletic because you do have to maneuver pretty well through traffic and a climb up at the end. It was a beautiful day and our guide was excellent. We kind of felt like locals riding our bikes through the city. At the end of our bike ride we ate pizza outdoors in a San Telmo square very close to the drop off spot and we got to see some tango while we ate. Will definitely do it again if I go back to Buenos Aires and explore the other neighborhoods.

This was the perfect start to a stay in Buenos Aires. The guide Alex was relaxed and friendly and the route covered key points of interest to the south of the centre especially Boca. Much of the tour though is along pleasant cycle ways. Beware though that there is some riding through busy streets and this is not for the faint hearted. It is suitable for competent cyclists of all ages. I am 62 years old and only use bikes a couple of times a year, but it was definitely right for me.
