Chichen Itza Day Trip from Cancun

Cancun, Mexico

Spectacular Chichen Itza holds both mystery and magic and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the most important archaeological zone and ancient capital of the Mayan Empire on a full day guided tour from Cancun. Admire the majestic observatory, the Pyramid of Kukulcan, the Temple of Warriors, the ball court and the castle. Sample typical Mayan cuisine at a buffet lunch and swim in a cenote (Ik Kil or Hubiku). Your Chichen Itza day trip includes hotel pickup and drop-off and a professional guide.

During your stay in Cancun, you simply must take the opportunity to visit Chichen Itza, the most important archaeological zone in Yucatan. After hotel pickup in Cancun, explore the ancient capital of the Mayan Empire and learn why it has been designated one of the modern wonders of the world. Its extraordinary architectural beauty and geographical location are sure to leave you in awe.

Your first stop is a 50-minute visit to either the Ik Kil cenote or Hubiku cenote. The cenote visited will depend on which area is less populated on the day of your tour. You'll have free time to explore this natural wonder, so be sure to bring along your towel and swimsuit! By 10:50, you'll head to the world famous archaeological site of Chichen Itza.

At approximately 12pm and once inside the archaeological site, you'll be divided into English and Spanish speaking groups for a guided tour. You'll be taken on a 1.5 hour tour with a certified guide who will introduce you to the secrets of the Mayans. Your guide will explain the historical significance of all the most important sites before leaving you to enjoy the ruins on your own until 3pm. See the Pyramid of Kukulkan, el Castillo (the Castle), the Temple of Warriors and much more. After exploring the site, you'll head to the local restaurant and enjoy a buffet of fresh salads, soups, rice, meat, chicken, fish, vegetables and other regional dishes (drinks at own expense).

After lunch, you'll be transported back to your Cancun hotel.

What an AMAZING Experience, this was partly because of our tour guide Raphael. He made the trip and long van ride fantastic. He was very knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything while bringing you into the conversation effortlessly. Although more time would have been nice to explore the ruins, you can still see it all if you hurry! The staff at EKNX surpassed my expectations. The driver was very professional, always on time and you will always feel safe with him. I believe his name was Javier. This trip is highly recommended!

Excellent experience. The guide was well informed, professional, and simpatico. The driver was also excellent. This was a nice way of getting a little immersed in both the Mayan and Mexican cultures. Without our guide, we would not have learned to significance of Mayan architecture, culture, religion, and advanced physics. I highly recommend this tour.

The day was very long. I vowed never to do a tour like this again.it was 16 hours packed into a bus with no leg room for anyone. The tour guide had good English and Spanish and showed all points of interest. very enjoyable but way too long.

It sounds like a good idea, but isn't. Let's be honest, the real reason you visit Chichen Itza is to see the big pyramid, El Castillo. However, our guide Luis proceeded to walk us around the entire grounds of Chichen Itza for two hours with no shade in 100 humidity. Why? I don't understand why it was necessary to take us to every single minute location within the area and speak for 20 minutes about something that us tourists couldn't care less about. We asked to stop and take a break, but we were told that we couldn't and so we had to skip out on a part of the tour because our guides didn't care if we were tired or about to pass out from heatstroke. Take another tour.

Me sobró la visita a una tienda de recuerdos que, por cierto, estaban el triple de caros que dentro del recinto de Chichen Itza._br/_ Por lo demás, muy interesante la visita y tiempo libre de Chichen Itza y el remojo en el Cenote

Incredible history lesson! Marco our guide is of Mayan descent and he had so much energy, passion, and information to share with us. We truly enjoyed out visit to one of the great wonders of the world.

It is hotter than the sun. There is very little shade at the site, so definitely consider an umbrella, hat and fan. This cannot be emphasized enough. The cenote is really crowded and kind of smells like a public pool. It is beautiful, though. I wish there was more time at the colonial village, Villadolid. You only get about 30 minutes there, which really is not enough. I did not like the little village they took us to with the cooking demonstration. The food is not that great and the store sells cheap products that you find everywhere else. I wish we spent less time there and more time in Villadolid. The guides were great - Suzy and I cannot remember the guy's name. Suzy did the historical tour portion and she was great.

They didn't have our hotel on the pickup list, so I chose the closest one and figured we'd just walk over to get picked up. Upon arrival at the hotel, the guard wouldn't let us into the lobby and told us to wait on the street. Our pickup time came and went, so after a very lengthy call, they finally sent someone to pick us up. Apparently the driver went to the lobby. Moral of the story? Only book this if your hotel is on the list. these hotels all have tight security and won't let you in unless you have a wristband indicating you have a room with them.

Ricardo was an absolute delight. SO knowledgeable- we learned loads on this trip! The bus was air-conditioned and comfortable, Valladolid was a quick stop but very interesting. Lunch at Kaua was delicious! Chichen Itza was even better than I expected - Ricardo lead us around to explain the history and the significance of the different structures there are no signs or placards or anything there. Fascinating! Our last stop was at Ik Kil cenote- this could have potentially been an incredible experience, but it was SO crowded by the time we got there. You have an hour to explore once you get off the bus, but by the time you wait in line to change into your swim suit, then wait in line for a locker, then shower and make your descent down to the water which at 3 or 4 pm is like a mosh-pit... hordes of people climbing over each other in 150 foot deep water, it's time to go back up and change back into dry clothes! Cenotes are probably best experienced in smaller groups... but everything else about this tour was top-notch and I am thrilled my family and I had the opportunity to experience it

This tour was above and beyond my expectations. The tour company was on time for pick up and did a wonderful job keeping all of the events of the day on schedule. It was a big, action packed day of sight seeing and history. The Mayan lunch spot was terrific! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to experience Mayan history.

We were picked up on time from our hotel and put in a van that was collecting us. Then they transported us onto a tour bus that had more leg room Thank goodness! and a bathroom. We thought we would sleep on the way but instead our guild Ricardo started briefing us and getting to know us. His English was excellent. He spoke in Spanish too. Not long into the tour he got a call from another bus who was having air conditioning problems and told us we would be taking on new passengers. Also another guild, Martin. From that point Martin took over. He didn't have the personality Ricardo had and his english wasn't nearly as good. I had to really concentrate on what he was staying to understand him. They took us to an old town and gave us 30 mins to see 2 places then loaded us up and brought us to the lunch place which was also they place they walked us through venders to buy stuff. Lunch was good even for a vegetarian. Then we got to Chichen Itza! There Martin filled us in on the main ruin, then walked us to about 5 others, at each one explaining what it was used for. Then they gave us 45 mins to walk around by ourselves before getting back on the bus. From there they took us to the ceremonial Cenote to play around for an hour. The places were beautiful and they gave us a LOT of info.

This tour was great. It was a packed itinerary with quick stops at Valladolid and the cenote but both were worth it. I thought the lunch was very tasty. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided great context for visiting the ruins.

The trip to the Mayan store was not listed in the description and essentially trapped us in a shop we didn't want to be in for over 40min. We wern't even allowed back on the bus to keep cool. Half the group was just sitting outside in the sun waiting to leave. Other than that it was okay but we didn't trust the guide following this experience as he was clearly just selling us things. I wouldn't recommend the trip to others simply due to the misrepresentation and waste of my time.

This trip was such a great value! After being picked up we went to a mayan town and then another where had a delicious buffet before heading to Chichen Itza. Ricardo our guide had so much knowledge! After this we went to the cenote for an hour. I recommend bringing something for the long bus rides!

Brilliant tour. Marco and Ricardo were great, very informative. It was a long bus journey for us from Cancun but they made the time pass by quicker. Chichen Itza was a marvel, well worth the journey. The cenote was very busy but worth the swim. Well worth doing.

We had a very pleasant trip from Cancun. Pick up at the hotel right on time, everything perfectly organised. Our guide Daniel had a lot of knowledge about Mayan history and was able to answer almost every question. _br/_ The trip included lunch which was ok, a little bit too touristy . we also stopped at the local store and bought some souvenirs, pretty expensive but was disappointed that all local people think you have a lot of money which just somehow got into your account...

loved this trip. We got picked up right on time We visited A town Valladolid people were nice and friendly and after we went to Chicken itza, amazingly impressive site to look at. The lunch was very yummy the best food we ever had! Then after that we went to el cenote a breath taking site. Our tour guide, Rafael was fantastic and made the trip memorable, he is very knowledgeable about the Mayan culture._br/_ I highly recommend this tour.

Review by:   Kirsty L,    December 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
This trip wastes a morning. A lot of time is spent travelling and then you are dropped in a medieval town for 20 minutes which is rather pointless, followed by half an hour in a Mayan shop. This is clearly just to get you to spend money in a store where there is a favourable deal for the tour company as the shop is in the middle of nowhere. Those of you not looking to buy tourist gifts then there is a lot of hanging around. Lunch is ok, but have to pay for your drinks with lunch and waiters insist on tips before allowing you to leave. Chichen Itza tour was very good and very informative in English and Spanish. However, tour guides do not insist on times to get back to the coach so we spent over 20 minutes waiting for late comers at each stop. This really added up. We didn't return to the hotel until 8.30PM after setting off at 7.30AM. A long day with a lot of wasted time.

I was not happy, we went to a colonial city but only had 30 mins.... got to see a park, watch a dog fight, could not see the church that was made out of a Mayan pyramid. Then on the bus again to the cenote and a lunch that was less than stellar lunch, pack into the restaurant like cattle. Where even if you wanted to have your picture take with Mayan warriors you had to pay. Back to the bus, to then be dropped off at this Mayan store. Where you walk around with some guy following you around acting just like the street vendors in flea markets You can't even look at anything without one of the attendants saying almost free or I give you a good deal . Then back to the bus, to FINALLY see Chichen Itza. Less than 2 hours at the pyramid, less than 2 hours at 1 of the Seven Wonders of the World!!!!_br/_ Now our guide was amazing!!!! He showed/ told us a lot of about the culture, that part was amazing. I guess my point is more time at Chichen Itza, less time seeing the other stuff. Chichen Itza should be revered. not just a stop over. 12 hour round trip 1 hour 50 mins at a Wonder of the world, just not right. oh and the company that is listed, it not the same that takes you. _br/_ Annette_br/_ P.S I am not someone who complains, I am extremely easy going so for me to write this I am truly disappointed.

This day out was amazing! Such good value, a lot cheaper than booking through your hotel. They pick you up early in the morning from your hotel and drop you back to your hotel in the evening. Our tour guide was so helpful and gave us lots of tips about where to buy the best souvenirs etc. You go swimming in the Cenote and get lunch afterwards which is delicious and included in the price. Chichen Itza is amazing and definitely worth a visit but there is very little shade so be prepared with sun screen, water, a hat etc.

Chichen Itza is absolutely amazing, and the history of it is even more incredible. But I would not have appreciated it nearly as much without the tour guide we had. He knew SO much and really broadened our minds into what Chichen Itza was really all about. It is quite the trip from Cancun, but well worth a day spent.

The tour guide was not very good. He and the driver sat in silence for the first 2 1/2 hrs of the trip. He didn't give any information on the things we did pas. When asked real questions he would say wait till we get there. Before the first stop a a Mayan village it was him trying to sell stuff

Amazing excursion! Very informative and fun! The tour guides were very knowledgeable and funny. A bus picked us up and dropped us off from our hotel which made it easy and stress-free. Swimming in the cenote was incredible and then finally Chichen Itza was breathtaking. I highly recommend this tour!

This was a GREAT tour. Our tour guide was AMAZING. Provided lots of history in a fun interactive way on the two hour bus ride there. He traded off in Spanish and English. It was a cool day so the cenote swim was OK. It was very beautiful just to see. Had to get in just to say we did it. : Visiting the small Mayan town was great too. Just gave us a peak into their culture. The tour at the ruins was very informational. Our guide explained the different buildings and architecture. We got rained on near the end of his tour so our hour of free time was huddling for cover, but after about 30 minutes, it let up and we had some time to get some pictures. Lunch was good. They really know how to squeeze in so much in one day. This was an awesome tour, and quite cheap for being a full 12 hour day!

We took this trip few years ago. When we returned back to Cancun, I recommended friends to take this tour also. It is a group tour, so expected to waste sometime to gather tourist. Bring your swimsuit to swim in the connote. Chichen Itza is interesting. Recommend to visit this place in cooler season.

Mauricio was our historical and cultural expert and Martin was our driver. They arrived punctually at our hotel at the set time. Both took their roles very seriously and exceeded our expectations. Mauricio is multilingual. There were eight adults on the tour. Six people spoke Portuguese and we speak both English and Spanish. Mauricio's explanations flowed smoothly from one language to another without the repetition seeming tedious. His personal knowledge of the Mayan language and culture added much to the experience. We learned of the numerical system, religious practices, astronomy, influences of other cultures, architectural designs, etc. The tour started once we were all in the van so the transportation time was well-used. The stop at Valldolid was too short and could be skipped for this reason. Shopping at the cooperative was interesting with the presence of a Shaman to give out blessings. The stop at the Cenote was interesting. Those who wanted to swim were given sufficient time to do so. The trip included a buffet lunch which was adequate, but the seating was tight and the service was lacking. Chichen Itza is an amazing archeological site that should not be missed. Mauricio provides a in-depth look at the site and the culture. It is evident he enjoys his role. With the small number of participants, it is very much a personalized tour.
