Castles Tour from Copenhagen: North Zealand and Hamlet Castle

Copenhagen, Denmark

If you love castles, Denmark has almost as many fairy tale castles as it does fairy tales! Visit the picturesque region of North Zealand just outside Copenhagen where you will see Kronborg Castle made famous as the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet as well as the magnificent Fredensborg Palace and Frederiksborg Castle.

Leave Copenhagen behind as you head north through magnificent Danish countryside and coastline towards Elsinore and Kronborg Castle. Chosen as the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet, this magnificent renaissance castle is on the UNESCO world heritage list.

After lunch (own expense), your tour continues towards Fredensborg, where the Queen's summer residence of Fredensborg Palace is attractively located in the middle of a lovely park, bordering the idyllic Esrum Lake.

The next highlight on your tour is Frederiksborg Castle, built by King Christian IV in 1601 - 1625. This pearl of history, built in magnificent Renaissance style with a touch of baroque, is now a national historical museum, containing treasures of painting, tapestry, porcelain, silver and furniture.

What a great way to spend a day in the countryside, away from the city! It was a well organised tour, Rosemary was very punctual and made sure we got to places on time. I had a personal interest in seeing Hamlet's castle and it did not disappoint! Also, the ride through the Danish countryside was lovely. I was very fortunate to have had amazing blue skies and sunny weather. Highly recommended!

This trip is very well organized. It starts on time, the guide is very good and interested in his topic and very informative. The main sights are fantastic. The guide even organizes a lunch to be bought and brought on the bus to save time for sightseeing.

I really enjoyed seeing three castles outside the city. And the tour guide was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot, when we could hear him. The group was a little large for us to crowd around and hear him at times. It would have been better if he had a mic and we had headphones so we weren't fighting to be up close to hear him. Also the tour was very rushed so he would often move to the next room and start talking before everyone was there, and there really wasn't any free time to explore, look at souvenirs, take photos, etc.

The tour itself was good. Places were interesting and beautiful scenery. However,_br/_ there were 110 people on this tour. Far more than were expected and so we had to wait 1 hour to get a second bus. Since there was only one guide,it was very difficult to hear what he was saying and it took a long time to move this number of people around in the venues. We had told our friends how great viator is and we were totally embarrassed. Though the tour guide and bus driver kept apologizing, it unfortunately didn't fix he issues we were having. Definitely didn't get what we paid for. Major disappointed.

Great tour, but not enough time at Hamlet's castle, so it felt a bit rushed at times. The sandwiches that the bus offers were amazing, really!

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT!!!! Money well spent towards an amazing day. Of course it would not be fitting if I did not mention the extra ordinary service provided by our guide Emilo. What an amazing person he is and so full of knowledge. He's well suited for this tour with such a large group. We were lucky enough to be able to visit the gardens at the castle that I could only describe as something out of a fairytale. Added to this, we were lucky to arrive in time to witness the changing of the guards at the royal summer residence. Keep up the good work Viator.

Very interesting, but need at least an extra 45 min. To an hour at each of the 2 Castles visited with the guide.

Due to a Royal Person visiting palace part of it was closed for visitors and left us with slight disappointment.

This tour is very nice but time the visit to the castles was done in a very rushed manner. The tour was supposed to start at 10:30am and end at 5:00pm but, didn't start until 11:00am because it was oversold and they had to wait for another bus to accommodate all the tourists that were affected. Of course the tour ended at 5:00pm and every stop was a rush, rush to end at 5:00pm.

I really recommend this tour. It was wonderful to visit nside the two castles. Our guide and the bus driver were nice and explained everything to us. Our guide had so many funny stories about the castles owners. The bus was very confortable. An excellent tour for anyone visiting the Copenhagen. I took the Castle tours on Tuesday. Unmissable!

The stops were too short. It could have started earlier and had more time at each stop. The size of the group also hindered the guide. Too much wasted time.

Well organized day trip out of Copenhagen to Kronborg Castle the Hamlet castle and Frederiksborg Castle which is really just a country palace. Both were great visits though and worth seeing. The driver and guide were experienced and professional.

This tour was wonderful! Our guide was very affable and knowledgeable. A great storyteller he kept us entertained even when on the road. The optional lunch was delicious! All the castles were lovely and interesting the travelling was a good pace. My only regret was not having more time at Fredricksborg Castle. Our guide had so many good stories and good information we didn't get around to seeing the whole castle. Took advantage of the discount ticket to Tivoli afterwards!

It was worthwhile. Our guide was attentive and knowledgeable and the two castles we toured were impressive. However, there were simply too many people in our tour group. This prevented us from being able to hear some of what our guide was saying. It would have been better if we had been issued the portable headphone sets that many tours use.

I especially enjoyed the scenic bus rides between castles. The countryside is very picturesque and, even though Copenhagen is beautiful, it provided different glimpse into Danish life. Unfortunately, time doesn't allow for stopping, but there are plenty of photo ops once the bus arrives at its destination.

My wife and I just returned from our Baltic Sea cruise with additional days in Copenhagen, Denmark. We took the Castle tours on Monday. It was a trip that we can recommend without question. We visited three castles, although we were only able to go inside two of them. Our guide and bus driver were both very knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. The only concern we would have would be that there is no time built in for lunch during the seven hour trip. Sandwiches were available as well as water on the bus, but they were not anything we were interested in having. It would have been nice to know in advance about this so that we could have brought a bagged lunch. One added extra for the trip was the views of the beautiful countryside we saw during the drive to the castles.

Review by:   Alexandra S,    August 2016 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
The guide was very nice but not very knowledgeable. One of the castles was very disappointing--not much in it and the other was full of furnishings from donors--rather than the originals. Also, the guide took us down into the dungeon where it was so black, it was dangerous and there was nothing there to see---we heard since there was no lighting and you could not see anything anyway!

This was a great tour, we enjoyed it very much, it was as someone else said a bit confusing to find where the tour started from. Our guide was most knowledgeable and the actors at hamlets castle was an extra treat. The day flew by.

This was a great day. The castles are outstanding and there was sufficient time to get a feel for each castle. The commentary was very good and catered well for English speakers. The coach was very comfortable.

This was a really good tour but for the distance and castles we had to cover, it should have started about 8 a.m. not 10 - we were lilterally running to finish the last castle, no time to really look and admire the grandeur of these extraordinary buildings. A good idea to organise lunch to be picked up and eaten on the bus, it saved time.

The tours of the Kronborg and Frederiksborg castles themselves were interesting and very good. _br/_ However, the problems our tour group had was getting back to the bus. At Kronborg, the walk to the bus was a long one and several of us made a wrong turn along the path and had to race across a huge field in a panic to get back to the bus. One of my friends almost got left behind because of this. At Frederiksborg, the bus left us off near the entrance but parked somewhere else. Luckily, as we were walking out, one of my friends saw the tour guide and we followed her. My other friend followed some other people from our tour group and walked in circles before finding the bus. _br/_ My suggestion would be to have the tour group meet the tour guide in the castle courtyards and then everyone walks back with her/him. It would save confusion on how to get back to the bus.

It was rather rushed. However, I suspect that is more the nature of this type of thing. We had no problem finding the bus and everything went smoothly. The commentary was quite good recorded and live and I appreciated the little detour to see some traditional homes in a small fishing village.

Started off with really heavy rain as we boarded the bus so we we quite worried. However it stopped almost at once. The tour guide and driver were friendly, chatty and knowledegable giving us comprehensive info on the sights as we went. The first stop was Kronborg Castle, made famous in Hamlet. here we had ample time to have a guided tour of the castle rooms and some of the amazing views across to Sweden. We also had an opportunity to pre-order lunch from out guide, a choice of awesome sandwiches which would be picked up and passed out later. Then on to Fredensborg Palace, where the Royal Family are still in residence. Not allowed inside but ample time for photographs outside and a break for an icecream or coffee at one of the little shops / cafe's nearby. Finally ending up at Frederiksborg Castle, with picture postcard views and photo opportunities outside and extensive guided tours inside at the beautiful rooms. AT all of the castles and sights along the way, so much to see and a wonderful introduction to so much of the history that Denmark has to offer. I'd certainly recommend this as a must for anyone visiting Copenhagen, a truly marvellous day.

Excellent tour and tour guide Mark! It is always nice to have a tour guide that is personable and knowledgable. Hamlet was a wonderful castle. North Zealand breathtaking..talk abut being well off..you know private beaches and all. And Fredricksborg Castle, what a beauty a lot of art work and just splendor and the Danes are proud of this beauty.
