Tangier, Morocco Day Trip from Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol, Spain

Discover the magic of Morocco on a day trip to Tangier from Costa del Sol. Morocco lies just across the Mediterranean Sea from south Spain, but this North African country feels like a world away! Your full-day adventure includes a Berber dance performance and Moroccan lunch, a walking tour of the medina, souk and kasbah, time for shopping at a Tangier bazaar, and round-trip ferry transfers – the ultimate value for a day in Morocco.

Your Morocco day trip to Tangier begins with a scenic drive from Costa del Sol to Algecias or Tarifa, in the southern tip of Spain. From there, board a high-speed ferry to travel to Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar (45 to 60 minutes), where your journey to the exotic Moroccan city of Tangier will continue on a comfortable, air-conditioned coach.

Start your tour of Tangier with a panoramic sightseeing tour of the city center and continue by foot to the little souk, the medina (old quarter) and the kasbah (old fortress). Admire Morocco's rich architecture, wander around the spice markets, visit one of the local bakeries to try some tasty bread (own expense) or stop to see the snake charmer.

Next, go shopping at a typical bazaar and see many types of carpets and handicrafts. Have a traditional Moroccan lunch at a local restaurant, and feast on food like couscous, tagine and other local delicacies. During lunch, be entertained with a performance by a Berber dancer.

Continue with a short stop at Cape Spartel, where you can see the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean mix together. Then, sample traditional mint tea and learn about the mint tea rituals at a local shop. Next, visit the Cave of Hercules and stop by the white sand dunes that border the Atlantic. If you wish, you may ride a camel here (own expense)! Alternatively, enjoy free time to explore the beautiful area.

On your way back to the ferry, admire views of the Moroccan landscape. After your cross the strait, relax on the comfortable coach ride from the Spain port back to Costa del Sol.

Please note: The itinerary and schedule of this trip are subject to change from December to April due to ferry's timetables and the Ramadan holiday.

If I could give a negative star I would. Julia Tours runs this particular tour to Tangier from various pick ups along the Costa Del Sol from Malaga to Tarifa.

This trip was quite disapponting for me. The whole day was rushed through, I felt we were treated like kids on a school trip and in total it left a sense of just getting the most money out of you. There was no free time in Tangier no time for photos either, which was not made clear when booking the trip. We were taken to see the camels but I didn't even have time to take pictures because the guide came to rush me back to the bus. The meal was average - I have had much better Moroccan food before. Then we were taken to carpet sellers and pharmacists to buy special products from them - somehow there was a lot of time arranged for their selling speeches. This time could have been better used with a more leisurely pace wondering around the beautifully looking narrow streets. I acknowledge that it was a rainy day and the bazaars were told to be closed because it was Friday but we could have been warned about this if the bazaars are always closed on Fridays. If you want to experience the real Morocco, I would suggest not to go on an organised day trip but arrange your own trip.

We loved our day in Morocco!! Paco, our guide explained how to bargain with the sellers, which was very helpful, and taught us how to have a lot of fun with the process. The buses were new and comfortable, the ferry ride was enjoyable, the bus in Morocco showed the beautiful coastline area. The meal was great and included music with smiling entertaining musicians. We were taken to an artisan coop where they had many quality items, including carpets. We then went to a medicinal herbalist who explained about herb remedies which was interesting but also, entertaining. A really packed day, would have liked maybe an hour more in the bazaar area but all in all a truely fun day! Don't miss it.

The tour guides were excellent. My only disappointment was the shopping. My expectation was time to shop in the marketplace and I was looking forward to returning to several stalls I noticed as we walked by on the way to lunch. Instead, our tour guide took us to two pre-selected stores where we watched a demonstration and were given an allotted time to shop in that store. Next time, I want the time to shop on my own for what I am interested in.

Hopes we're high for this trip, but quickly dashed. We were ushered to stores that only guides had connections with. We had no time to shop on our own, so literally no shopping. Was unable to get gifts I had wanted. Completely disappointed in this trip.

This is an excellent day trip to the former 'International' City of Tangier across the Straits of Gibraltar in Morocco full of surprise and interest._br/_ Border formalities must be observed so you must be prepared to follow instructions, be patient and above all remember to bring your passport._br/_ The guides are excellent and lunch is a rare treat in a fabulous Moroccan restaurant._br/_ The local street sellers are persistent but never threatening, a polite 'no thank you' does the trick._br/_ It's a long day, 11 hours but well worth it

Great tour, but an awfully long day with most of the time spent getting to and from Tangiers. Enjoyed the city, but would have liked more time in the marketplace.

The trip has it's good points however I felt the bus tour could have been slower to allow photos. The walk through the market was more like a sprint and then we were taken what I can only describe as a Moroccan department store which sold different items on different floors using hard sale tactics and we weren't allowed to leave, I am of the opinion that either the tour guide or the company is getting commission from this store. The next store was a perfume/oil shop again we were herded in. The final 15 minutes we were taken to a square where we were allowed to go off on our own for the short time, we then realised that the shops that we were forced to go had been selling at premium prices. The coach brought us to the ferry and there we sat for over an hour before leaving, I felt short changed and rushed. Will not be going with these again.

Our day trip was well worth the money. The coach was comfortable and our guides were very knowledgeable. We saw so many interesting sights and a fascinating culture. The ferry ride was fast and you always felt well looked after. We had a bus tour of Tangiers then had a delicious lunch at a Moroccan restaurant with musical entertainment. There were also opportunities to see a snake charmer and take a camel ride. Our time in the market was interesting in a rug shop but no pressure. The vendors outside were a little annoying but that is how they make their living. The day is long if you start in Malaga. We were fortunate to be picked up in Marbella. This was an excellent way to see Tangiers.

This was a thirteen hour trip that netted us about 4 1/2 hours in Morocco. A lot of time spent on a bus with multiple stops along the way to pick up additional passengers along the way, long lines for multiple passport checks, and some pretty unauthentic experiences once in Morocco. The camel rides were a about a 100 foot loop around an asphalt parking lot, many in the group felt sorry for the camels and chose not to ride them as they did not look well. The lunch event was nice. We were then shepherded into a room for a carpet sales pitch, before heading back to the ferry. Whole trip was not what our group of seven travelers envisioned and did not provide the experience we were looking for. I would not recommend this trip. If you want to go to Morocco, look at the 3-day options as they might provide a better experience.

If I could give negative stars I would. The guide Rafael did not explain what to expect in Morocco or how to deal with all the sellers harassing us and being rude to us. I actually told others on the trip about things that I had read, like the fake amethysts and fossils. He took us to very seedy places, when I am sure there are places where you could find beautiful objects. The natural cosmetics place was a joke. You are made to waste your time looking at spices that supposedly cure everything which you can get at home in the supermarket much cheaper. There are no comfort stops, even though you are on the bus for over 4 hours. Again this was not mentioned by Viator that most of the day is travelling. We ended up with 15 minutes free time where we could finally do what we wanted. What a waste of my time and money. I think this tour is criminal in what it delivered for our money.

An absolute NO! _br/_ A day in Morocco is an absolute mistake, especially when you have a corrupt Tour Guide such as Hassan, who only took us to the places with kickbacks, didn't head count to make sure everyone was together before departing to the next location, not giving us a second of free time to shop at the Shuk, which was supposed to be a highlight and flying through the streets, where if you stopped for one minute to look around, he was a half mile away. Unacceptable. Wasted an entire perfectly hot beach day on an taste of Morocoo, which was not tasteful. In addition, ferry ride was off schedule and we waiting on it for two hours, wasting valuable time.

This was a great trip with lots of interesting sights, sounds and smells. The bus was clean, the guide was helpful, the ferry was fast and comfortable and the lunch was OK. Julia Travel were well organised and efficient._br/_ We did so many things in a day it was a bit of a whirlwind, but nevertheless enjoyable and good value for money._br/_ Although we were pestered by street sellers, this was unavoidable in the circumstances, but it was a bit annoying after a while._br/_ The shop we visited selling pottery, leather goods, carpets and other local items was fantastic, and we weren't pressured at all into buying. _br/_ Just be aware that it's a very long day, especially if you are further east on the coast than we were in Estepona, as the extra distance means getting up really early and arriving back at your hotel very late.

We were picked up at 5:30am and didn and #39;t even get to Morocco until 2pm. We were constantly waiting in lines and rushed everywhere once we were there. There was little instruction on where to go and when. We were told we would get to shop in the local bazaar, but weren and #39;t even allowed to look.

The bus did pick us up on time at 7:30 hrs. in Marbella, but it took over 4 hours to get to Tarifa, on the ferry and across to Tangier...The tour returned on the 16:30 hrs. ferry, after only five 5 hours in Morocco, including a few hours on the bus! We never saw the Atlantic ocean and we never saw a berber dance. The camel rides were in a parking lot the lunch was pretty bad except for the soup and the only shops we were allowed to stop in were those selected by the tour operator. We finally managed to get 15 minutes of free time, just before we walked back to the port. This was our first and least Viator tour and definitely not for insiders.

I will review in 3 parts. Our guides Paco and Hassan were the best. Paco was informative and humorous while Hassan spoke with pride and fervor about his city Tangier. The demonstrations at the carpet place and the spice store were good. The meal was a quick 45 minute endeavor with inconsistent food. Lastly, I know it is a cultural thing to bargain but I felt we had to run a gauntlet to get past the various vendors selling things.

This is absolutely the best way to go to Tangier the first time. The tour is a bit of walking, which I liked and an overview of cultural, historic, natural sights plus some limited shopping. The shopping was pre-planned and included some things such as carpets that a day tourist might not have in mind. Still, it was a good balance between many different activities and the lunch with live traditional music was very good. The Guides were helpful and well-informed, all the transport was comfortable and on time and I felt very safe and well looked after the entire time. There was an extra guide through the narrow and lively streets of the old city in Tangier and he kept his eye on all 18 of us, when I lost my daughter in a shopping area, he knew exactly where she was. THANK YOU Said 1, Said 2 and Pepe!

My wife and I took this trip with our two teenage daughters and we all had a thoroughly enjoyable day courtesy of Julia Travel. It was perfect for our requirements and great value. Our guides, Jeanette and Hassan were very good, providing an informative and stress free experience for all. Staying near Estepona, we had considered driving to Tariffa ourselves and taking the ferry, but I know we would not have taken in anywhere near as much of Tangier in the limited time and it would have probably cost us more. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a flavour of Morocco in one day!

This tour was awful and not worth the money. It took us 3 hrs each way bc of the long bus ride with many stops. The tour guides were horrible. They acted like con artists trying to get us to buy wares from their friends. We did not learn about the culture or any history.

This trip was a big dissapointment for me, one of the worst experiences as a traveler. The itinerary was very limited, as we visited the local vegetable Market and the bazaar only. No local history, no important landmarks, the guide was truly just full of herself, arrogant, denying to answer the tourists ' questions... The trip lasted 5 hours in the town, but I feel like all this time was wasted without seeing the town of Tanger and it's culture and history.

Though Marocco is absolutely worth seeing, the tour was too focused on shopping. I understand that local merchants and #39; livelihood is tourists and I am all for supporting local economies. However, there was too much time spent at the bazaar that I would have rather spent exploring Tangiers further.

Good tour, not particularly cultural enriched. Still fun and a great experience for my teenagers. Need more consistent clarity on the pick up points. Expected a confirmation email with the address and time but never got one. Pick was smooth and tour guides Raphael and Samir were great. Note two hour time change, bring snacks especially , during Ramadan, kids were getting hungry.

The trip overall was great. Even though it was a day trip, I didn't feel rushed at all and felt that it was enough time to see everything. The only issue was being picked up by the coach bus. They were 20 minutes late which caused some panic because we thought we had missed the bus! I would definitely recommend this day trip to anyone looking to explore a city unlike no other and learn about the history.

There was not enough time to do souvenir shopping and we were not given time to shop anywhere except the handicrafts superstore they took us to. If you do this tour you would be better off skipping the spices demonstration and shopping on your own. At one point one of the guides said we had plenty of time to shop because we will be in this store for 40 minutes. but of course they want us to only shop in their approved stores. It was a fun ecperience but even a half hour of announced free time would have been good. The lunch was great and definitely the highlight. It was funny that the snake charmer was also a musician at the restaurant.

This tour was a nice intro to Morrocco. The bus tour guide provided a good amount of information, but always told us to look at something when we were almost past it. The guides in Morrocco were knowledgeable. The provided luncheon was very nice, the camel rides fun but brief, but the perfume area a total waste of time. It was filthy there with bathrooms that were a health hazard. Why would anyone buy products for their bodies from a place like that. I chose to look at the jewely and leather instead of the rugs. The items were nice, but the time spent there, far too long.

I found this trip to be just one big opportunity for the people of Tangier to try and sell me things. The entire time we were in Tangier except for lunch which was very nice we were taken from one sales presentation to the next - the market portion of the trip included a 15 minutes sales presentation, the spice market was only a sales presentation of what was for sale. Sales technique is very high pressure....not relaxing at all.

I rated this tour a 4 star because personally I could not handle the bazaar with its off smells, people in your face, and the constant lets make a deal vendors. If this would not bother you, you will enjoy the tour. It was well organized. I always felt safe. I loved the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar, the lunch was very good, the guide very informative. The camel ride, for only 1 euro, was hilarious as was the snake charmer. Viator did a wonderful job creating just the right mix of activities to introduce one to Moorish culture.
