Day Trip to the Sacred Valley: Chinchero, Maras, Moray and Ollantaytambo

Cusco, Peru

Explore Peru’s Urubamba Valley on this day trip from Cusco! Visit the Andean village of Chinchero, see the former salt-producing town of Maras, view the impressive terracing of Moray and marvel at the Inca fortress in Ollantaytambo as you learn about the rich history of the valley’s colonial villages from your local guide.

On this day trip from Cusco, travel to Peru’s historic Urubamba Valley. Located between Cusco and Machu Picchu, Urubamba Valley is known for its lush scenery, picturesque colonial towns and a magnificent Inca fortress.

After pickup from your hotel, your first stop is in the Andean village of Chinchero. Here, you'll take in mountain views, visit the main square and see an ancient church with unique floral and religious interior designs. Next, head off the beaten path to the small town of Maras. This village is known as a former salt-producing center that dates back all the way to colonial times.

From there, you'll head to the fascinating display of terraces in Moray, located only about 2 miles (4 km) from Maras. Moray boasts three amphitheater-like terraces made by the Incas. These terraces, which are carved deep into the earth in a bowl shape, were thought to be used to determine the optimal conditions for growing crops. After visiting Moray, take a lunch break at a restaurant in the area. You'll have the option of selecting one of two restaurants, Tunupa or Alhambra. After filling up on delicious food, you'll be ready for the next part of the day trip.

Following lunch, continue on your tour to Ollantaytambo, home to a magnificent Inca fortress that you can explore. This historic fortress was where Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle against the Inca Empire. After you visit the fortress, you'll have time to walk around the cobblestone streets of Ollantaytambo before heading back to Cusco.

Great tour with some very interesting stops. Ollantaytambo was very cool. You kind of know what to expect with Machu Picchu but this tour was full of surprises. Lunch was really good. The guide was great!

We had a really great trip on this tour. Moray and Maras were both very interesting Inca sites. Chinchero was a tourist trap. Overall very enjoyable and worth the time just for Maras and Moray.

Rodrigo was excellent and so was Juanito our driver, we had such a good time with them two. Rodrigo was very knowledgable and caring, he shared a lot with us : highly recommend to do a private tour around those beautiful places.

We had a superb tour with our tour guide Oscar. I can't speak highly enough about his knowledge, perfect English, organizational skills and care of us. What a fine young man! This is a private tour and we had a driver who drove us all over the Sacred Valley in a mini van. It was comfortable and safe. Oscar used his iPad to illustrate and show us timelines of the Inca kings, map of Peru, geography and plants and animals that he was telling us about. He was enthusiastic and passionate about everything he showed us. We learned that as a guide he must have a five year university degree and proficiency in two languages besides Spanish. The lunch was a buffet in a beautiful restaurant. There was even a band that played just for us while we ate with Oscar! Superb service and delicious food. This trip is well worth the money and an excellent use of time.We could never have found the silversmith village, textile demonstration, restaurant and other amazing sights on our own. It was the highlight of our trip to Peru.

This trip was absolutely unbelievable! Most people go to Cusco with the intent to see Machu Picchu but there is so much more and this day trip encompasses it all! Our tour guide Juan was absolutely wonderful - the tour was only suppose to be around 6 hours long but he spent much more time than that and was entirely patient with my group of 7. The views were spectacular and I didn't even realize that lunch would be included. There is so much history and architecture to see in Cusco and this tour was definitely worth it to get a taste of it all.
