Machu Picchu Day Trip from Cusco

Cusco, Peru

Take an all-inclusive day trip to breathtaking Machu Picchu from Cusco. Visit the world-famous Incan ruins and learn about the city, its history and the people who once lived there. Ideal for first-time visitors, families (non-strenuous hiking) and individual travelers, this once in a lifetime experience is a must-do when visiting Peru!

Completed in approximately 1450 at the height of the Incan empire, Machu Picchu was abandoned less than 100 years later following the Spanish conquest of Peru. Today it is considered by many to be the new spiritual center of the world.

From Cusco, you'll be transferred to the railway station to enjoy your 4-hour scenic rail tour to Aguas Calientes. In order to meet various customer needs, you can choose from three different types of options.

The Expedition option was created for adventurous passengers seeking comfort and security without the extra frills. Departing from Poroy train station, located approximately 15 minutes outside of Cusco, your journey to Machu Picchu begins! The seats have been reupholstered with indigenous fabrics, giving them a touch of local flavor. Snacks are available for purchase, as well as additional storage space for backpacks.

The Vistadome option is a comfortable way to journey to Machu Picchu. Departing from Poroy train station, located approximately 15 minutes outside of Cusco, you'll enjoy beautiful panoramic windows to make the most of the spectacular scenery and allow for fantastic photo opportunities. Delicious snacks as well as hot and cold refreshments are served on the way (own expense).
The Executive Class option departs from the Ollantaytambo train station, located approximately 1.5-hours from Cusco and make your way to Machu Picchu in comfort. Enjoy scenic panoramic views from the train, where you'll be seated in comfortable, padded chairs with a fold-out table for your convenience. Snacks and beverages are served on board the train for your enjoyment (own expense).

Upon arrival at Aguas Calientes station, you'll board a small bus and head up to the ruins of the “sacred city”, Machu Picchu. Your expert guide will walk with you through the main streets of these amazing ruins. Stroll through town squares and climb delicately carved stone stairways. Esoteric wisdom holds Machu Picchu as the new spiritual center of the world. There will be time to be alone and fully embrace this magnificent wonder of the world, letting this once in a lifetime experience set in.

In the afternoon you'll return to the train station in Aguas Calientes for the trip back to Cusco.
IMPORTANT: Your passport detail is needed for the Machu Picchu Day Trip (Full name and Passport ID). Please provide your passport detail in the additional request box, otherwise the tour is not confirmed.

Reasonable pricing considering all that is included. The Vistadome train was amazing, our tour guide Hector was the absolute best, and overall was a very safe, reliable and wonderful way to see Machupicchu in a day.

This was a great trip, very well organized. The tour guider was very nice, friendly and knowledge. He gave us an excellent introduction about the history of Machu Picchu at the top of the mountain, and answered all our questions. It was just like I was in a field trip to Machu Picchu, listening to a professor's interesting lecture. I highly recommend the tour.

Great tour guide, but a tad rushed.

Extremely organized. Since I was traveling alone, I was concerned initially as I had not received an email with the time for pick up at the hotel, but as I arrived late on Friday night in Cusco, they had a note for me with the receptionist at hotel with the details for the next morning. In every stop there was someone waiting for our group. We had plenty of time to walk around monuments and the Aguas Calientes afterwards. I would strongly recommend this tour if your time is limited like mine was...

WARNING: Viajes Pacifico the local company used for this tour does not pick up from hotels/AirBNB outside the center Plazas de Armas you will have to meet at their office at your own expense!!!

Started at it's best. Got the best seat on the Vistadome train book early. Everything went smooth but I suggest if you want to take pics don't go out yet and go back from the places you want to take photos. Perurail is so good from and until Ulantaytambo but sucks going to Poroy Cusco.. We are so delayed and the train has some issues.

My husband and I went on the tour on May 22. The Company didnt send me a separate email advising the pick up time until I made two phone calls. We were picked up from Sonesta Hotel Cusco at 4:25am. There were 10 of us in this tour. The trip was well organized. One of the staff will hand you an envelope containing all the tickets required for the day at the beginning of the trip Remember to bring Passports. It took 2 hours bus ride from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. The road journey was very bumpy. We took the Perurail Vistadome train which departed at 7:43am. There are large windows which gave the best view of the valley. Drink and light snack were served on board. The train ride took 1.5 hours to reach Aguas Calientes, followed by a 25 minutes bus to the entrance of Machu Picchu. _br/_ Our tour guide, Abbon was very good. He spoke very good English, and gave us information on this huge ancient city in a simple and easy to understand manner. He didnt rush us. He gave us enough time at each location to take the best photos. We spent 3 hours inside. I feel good tour guide deserved tips from everyone._br/_ Even we were split into two groups while on the way down to the town. He waited for us there at the bottom of the mountain to say goodbye to us, and reminded us the time to be at the train station. We were given about 3 hours to explore Aguas Calientes._br/_ Our returned trip departed at 4:43pm to Cusco Poroy station, which took 4 hours but there was a performance, fashion show on the return trip.

First of all, Machu Picchu is wonderful, this is not a review of that.... but the organization by the local operator Viajes Pacificos left a lot to be desired, Our selected itinerary - clearly stated on the Viator website - was for train departure from Poroy, which is close to Cusco, But we actually left from Ollanaytambo, which is an unpleasant two hour bus journey, We were actually supposed to be informed of our hotel pickup the day before. This did not happen and we had to call twice to find out. On our return, we were inexplicably moved from the bus with our name on to another bus that was unaware of our hotel, so we were last to be delivered. Our friends who were on the original bus and at a hotel very close to ours were not moved._br/_ On the positive side, our guide Nicolas was very good, and of course it is hard to criticize the location. But I will likely not book through this agency again.

The tour went very smoothly but I'm only giving this 3 stars because within the tour group all of our return train tickets were different and I feel like I got shafted on the return ticket being at 2pm that day. Giving just enough time for the guided tour and no free time. Other people in the same tour group had return tickets of 6pm or later. There was no choice in return times.

We did Sacred Valley before MP- also a great trip. Again, we had Robinson as our tour guide. Very knowledgeable and helpful kept the pace just right. Machu Picchu should be on everyone's bucket list. This is one very great tour company. My best compliment- I will use Viator again. Even the weather was perfect

Extremely well organized and a nice small group! like many of the reviews stated, it was an early day but worth every moment. the last bus ride is a bit harrowing, but another option is to walk back down the trail to the train. This took us about an hour winding down the side of the mountain in mostly shady spots! it was a nice alternative to the bus and there was still plenty of time to have lunch in town before catching the train

Review by:   Mia L,    April 2018 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Considering the amount paid, it was poorly organised after drop off at hotel to get the bus. Unengaged guide answering questions but not providing much info. Booking through Viator is obviously not a qualifier.

Travelling to Machu Picchu was as amazing as they say it is. The day started with a 4:05a.m. pick-up at the hotel, ouch! We rode for a bit picking up passengers and finally got to the train. We were 5 guys averaging 5'10 - 6'6 so needless to say things were a little tight. The executive train was clean on the inside and staff was friendly, but I think if I had the opportunity I would have paid a little more for the vistadome or upgraded options. The view was no different than you would get from an Amtrak train, the windows weren't washed on the outside and the skylights weren't really functional for viewing. I happened to sit by the window and facing travel so I still got a lot of great views but some of my friends didn't see a whole lot. The views in and of themselves were stunning of the riverway as the valley sides rose up and got steeper and steeper. There was a little bit of a cattle call when we got off the train but we were able to get on a bus for one of the more harrowing rides you will take to get to the site. Not much room there either by the way, I have concluded that Peru in general needs to be upsized LOL. Anyway once there after another cattle call we were bless with an amazing view on a cloudless and actually hot day. You may want to strategize for the trip by dressing in layers... The views and the site were stunning and there is quite a bit of effort just to get around the site. We were touring with a family group where the elders had to skip a significant portion of the tour. There are a lot of up and downs and needless to say not a lot of guardrails and handrails to assist. The guide was ok but not the most amiable and potentially knowledgeable. At times I kind of felt like we were being processed. After the main tour we got to head back to the town/ village before where we were able to enjoy a great meal before heading back to the train. The train staff were as polite on the way back as the way there and drive to our hotel was uneventful. I would point out that heading back was a much better opportunity to take pictures from the bus but again the windows on the outside could have been cleaner to allow for better shots. I had an amazing time and with the caveats I mentioned would definitely buy this trip again!

There are many places on earth that just dont quite live up to their billing. Machu Picchu absolutely does! We visited on a beautiful warm day in March. The travel time is quite long but the time spent on this mountain is fabulous! We had a wonderful guide named John whose knowledge and love for this place was palpable. I found the ticketing somewhat confusing. You have several different tickets to cover the four bus rides, the two train rides and Machu Picchu itself. But it was still a fabulous tour. Highly recommended!

We had an excellent day trip. We were picked up from the hotel on time and were helped all through the day with the various legs of travel. Our guide for Machu Picchu was excellent and provided a great number of historical details as we explored this wonderful place. We rode on the Vista train with provided really beautiful views of the Andes as we traveled. Since we were off season rainy season the train ride was shorter and part of our excursion was by small bus which was very comfortable with a great driver that never left us feeling unsafe. Thanks for this fantastic experience!

I usually enjoy Viator trips but most that I have taken suffer from insufficient information on pick-up place and times. The instructions I received for this trip said that there would be an email the day prior to the trip. By 4.30pm, I had not received an email and was wondering about the pickup time. The information I had said that the Viator Head Office in Cusco was at 847 Av El Sol so I attempted to find it. There is no such address and only by good fortune did I discover that the address was actually 817 AV El Sol. The staff were not particularly helpful except to tell me that the pickup time was 04.10 am. With a pickup time like that, you need an email much, much earlier in the day. We enjoyed the trip but subsequently took another to the Sacred Valley with Viator in which we had similar problems and received instructions bring your passport which proved irrelevant. Viator needs to improve its customer service in respect to pick up service. Until they improve, I'm looking elsewhere,

Amazing place, great tour, awesome guide! From Cusco it’s 2 hour bus ride, then 90min train ride, then another 20min bus to the top. Once there we had our own personal English-speaking guide, very knowledgeable. Tour was a couple hours, then had a couple hours of free time. Very well worth it!

great trip, snacks and drinks were included. As is a fashion parade haha! I wish the tour advised of the insects. Guide never mentioned not to wear short clothes, he never mentioned he saw any bites on me nor did he say anything about what to use on them- though i was covered/eaten alive. 1week on i still have them :

An extraordinary experience of visiting Machu Picchu done comfortably and informatively thanks to Viator. Seamless point-to-point transportation including hotel pick-up early AM, PeruRail train, bus up to Machu Picchu, and hotel drop-off late PM, made the long-journey quite pleasant. Having the local expert/certified Machu Picchu guide allowed us to take in the views and be educated simultaneously. HIGHLY recommend this trip if you want to maximize of your single day visit to Machu Picchu.

So first of all, I will echo all the great things everyone else has said before me. That was the reason I booked this tour, and it didn't disappoint. I will instead focus a little more on timelines and other things that are kind of missing from previous reviews, hoping to give future travelers a little more info on what to expect. Ok, my only complaint is this: In the days before the tour, you get the email saying that your tour is coming up and if you haven't given your passport or hotel, it may be cancelled. It also tells you that you will receive an email the day before telling you what time the bus will pick you up. Well, that email comes late, like 1827 local time, which is enough to scare you. Luckily, I went to the office at 1500 and found out my pickup time. I wish they were a little more ahead of the game. When you get picked up super early, you plan to get to bed early.

Machu Picchu is such an amazing sight to see, and to be lucky enough to see it in sunshine and clear weather was very special. Our guide, Hector, was perfect - there were only four of us in our group, and Hector was very informative, and was able to maintain a pace that I could keep up with - not being as young or as agile as I used to be, I was a little worried - I needn't have been. _br/_ The train journey was long, but we had expected that, the staff on the train were great, friendly and helpful. The return journey in the dark did seem never ending with no outside scenery to keep one occupied, maybe something to read or keep you occupied would help there.

Hector was an awesome tour guide. He managed the pace of the tour extremely well, was very informative on the history of Machu Picchu, and had a great sense of humor, which I always appreciate with any tour guide. I would recommend this trip managed via Viator to anyone and all. Truly a great time and an unbelievable experience.

picked up from hotel at 520am, the train from poyor to MP was the slowest in the world, travelling at 30-40km/hour covering about _br/_ 100km , taken 4 hours to get there. they must upgrade it to a faster , if not bullet train . the bus journey to top of mountain was a bit scary._br/_ we only spent 1-2 hours on top of MP, WORTH THE TRIP FINALLY, GOT BACK TO HOTEL AT 8PM EXHAUSTED ESPECIALLY WITH THE SLOW TRAIN again

Our guide Hamilton was absolutely excellent in displaying a great understanding of the site, an empathy with MP itself and helping us avoid the crowds who were somewhat noisy and pushy. MP is an absolutely captivating place. I am reading Hiram Bingham's account now I have returned, but recommend it be read before and after a trip by true enthusiasts. JM.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Our train was delayed an hour so the guide worked with us so we could still have a full tour of Machu Picchu. This trip was amazing! It was super easy as they picked us up early from our hotel room. They transported us to the bus that took us from Cusco to the train station. They give you all of your tickets for the bus, train, and entrance at the beginning of the morning so be sure to put them in a safe place, as we saw a group that misplaced them and they were not allowed on the train on the way back. It was a long day, but worth every cent, and I highly recommend you get the train with the added view, as the views through the valley are incredible, oh and they serve food and nonalcoholic drinks on your trip each direction.

Magnificent, mysterious and enjoyed this new wonder of the world. The agent of Viator tour is very organised particularly on each route from taking train, bus, and walking up the Machu Picchu etc. Agent is familiar with timing and ensure we have enough time to get down from the top of Machu Picchu. The surroundings of hill and gorges at Machu Picchu are beautiful. It is worth the effort and travel time.
