Dublin Historical Walking Tour

Dublin, Ireland

Few cities wear history on its sleeve like Dublin does! The Historical Walking Tour has been acclaimed as a must-do tour for any visitor to Dublin and starts at Trinity College main gates. It takes in the grounds of Trinity College, Old Irish Parliament, Dublin Castle, City Hall, the Medieval and Viking quarter centered around Christ Church Cathedral and finishes in the old port of Temple Bar on the banks of the River Liffey.

Your guide has a passion for all aspects of history and will be delighted to discuss anything which might be of interest to you. Dublin combines a medieval city with the most stately of eighteenth century architecture and a thriving contemporary cultural scene. Behind the doorways, at every street corner there are reminders of the characters - revolutionary, literary and others - who imagined the city.

In just 2 hours, this entertaining 'seminar on the street' conducted by history graduates of Trinity College Dublin, explores the main features of Irish history - Dublin's development, the influence of the American and French Revolutions, the Potato Famine 1845 - 1849, the 1916 Rising, the great War and the 1916 rising, the war of Independence, the Northern conflict and Ireland today.

Our guide was well versed in Irish history and relayed it well. Be aware that there is a lot of walking on this tour. I would not attempt this with any kind of disability.

Excellent tour. The guid is very informative, eloquent, smart and with a good sense of humor. He even took more time with our group to go into details of Irish history. I highly recommend this tour. You will not be disappointed.

We were with a group of about 20 people. The tour leader was in a mad rush from place to place, severely limiting our enjoyment and learning experience.

Our tour guide forgotten name was very knowledgable and knew her stuff about the history of Dublin. _br/_ It was a little bit of a slow moving walk around the city and we ending up sitting at Wood Quay for 20 minutes as she was explaining things, who was way too long especially when it is not the most attractive place to sit in Dublin. _br/_ Still she had some interesting stories.

Our tour guide knew anything and everything about Irish history, especially the parts pertaining to Dublin. He was very animated and had a wonderful sense of humor. So many wonderful and unexpected parts of Dublin are covered. It's a good mix between covering most of the major sites and some off-the-beaten path ones. The small stories that were shared really connects you to the place and people. The tour is a great way to get your bearings in Dublin and get ideas of what you want to explore more deeply.

This was an excellent tour. To be fair, it was a great history lecture, using some off the buildings in the area as backdrops. Silvie sp? was great and was a great speaker. Would definitely recommend for those who want the correct history of Ireland.

The historical walking tour comes highly recommended from me. The guide for this tour Tommy presented a detailed and yet entertaining view of Irish history while touching upon the key milestones. The tour itself covers significant ground by looking at many of the important buildings and sites in Dublin. Tommy was able to share the history in a story telling approach which made the huge variety of facts more lucid and easy to understand. The pace of the walk is moderate and the group was able to keep pace with him. The walking tour also allows one to take in the sights of the city at a comfortable pace and allows you to appreciate how the city came to be. I thoroughly enjoyed it and give it a big thumbs up!

This was a fascinating couple of hours, wandering through buildings and parts of town I wouldn't have thought to visit. The tour took us through significant places in Dublin's and Ireland's history, while weaving in literary historical sites. The guide knew so much and was a pleasure to listen to. Highly recommended.

Excellent tour, we were very lucky for the time of year with the weather. The tour guide was first class imparting great information laced with some very humorous quips. The tour lasted just over 2 hours and if you want a great quick introduction to the history of Dublin this will tick all the boxes.

I arrived to Dublin one day before the rest of my family. I wanted to take a tour to learn about the city and also get a sense of direction so that I could show my family around. This tour was great and allowed me to accomplish that. I was then able to become a tour guide for my family! I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Dublin for the first time!

We had the pleasure of Slyvie as a guide. This tour was very informative and entertaining. I'm amazed at the depth of knowledge and pride of the people in their heritage. This tour left us wanting to see and learn more. Great city, great tour, great tour guide! Easy walking tour, too. Do it!

This was a fabulous walking tour! Good pace, great information and the guide was absolutely outstanding!! We went toward the end of our stay, but I would do it earlier if you can. The time just flew by and ended on the perfect note-where Handel's Messiah was first performed publicly! Do not miss this tour!

The amount of historical info given is overwhelming. That's the only reason for not rating this a 5 star. If you already have a general idea of Irish history, you could absorb more of this. Some of the very early history sites were pointed out as areas...like this is where the Viking village was. The roads and buildings of the last two hundred years or so,are still standing. You can walk the walk and touch the stones that heroes and villains touched. _br/_ Very interesting.

The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and added occasional wit to his tour. I think we selected the wrong tour for us, however. I was looking for more of a sightseeing tour and this was definitely historical. The tour guide did indicate that it was historical and not sightseeing at the onset of the tour, I guess I didn't realize just how historical he meant.

Very informative. Helps you get acclimated to Dublin. A little too mush on the political history and not enough on the country's background. A little difficult hearing at times no headsets.

The wonderfully informed and energetic doctoral student gave us the best tour of the city we could have asked for. His clear and cogent delivery, wonderful good humor and patience for all the questions made for a great experience. We had about 12 in our group and we all could hear him even over the traffic. This tour went a long way in helping us to understand the complicated history of the country and the political issues and cultural forces that permeate the society there. Really great! Everyone was rapt!_br/_ Thanks, Eoin! Wait - did i spell that right???? sorry! OWEN

The reservation indicated where we were to meet the guide, but I wish I had better directions to the location. I took a bus from the hotel and was confused by the various entrances to Trinity College. I left with plenty of time and arrived at the appointed meeting spot ahead of schedule. I was surprised by the number of people waiting for the tour. Fortunately, there were two guides and we were separated into two groups. Our guide, Alex, was a history doctorate candidate. Lucky us! He had so much knowledge and background information making the tour so meaningful. Just as advertised, this tour is full of historical facts and perspective. Also, there's a lot of walking. People with limited mobility may want to keep this in mind.

This was a fascinating tour--we had two guides who split our group in half. We learned so much more than the few words you might get on a bus tour, and planned our follow-on visits to certain sites based on what we learned. Our guide was great actually looked like one of our two red-headed American Irish sons! and we even had a nice visit with him in a pub after the tour and beforfe his next assignment.

Great walking tour, really enjoyed the entire experience. Alex was well versed and knowledgeable and made the tour easy and relaxed. He was also thoughtful and looked out for all on the tour. We got stuck at traffic light crossings and he waved to acknowledge that he knew where we were. His knowledge of historical facts was great and he also made it enjoyable with interesting side notes. It was not a strenuous walking tour but long enough while seeing major attractions. Thanks Alex it was great.

Amazing tour! I would come with at least a little knowledge about Ireland. It would make the tour even better. Our tour went over by almost an hour so you definitely get your moneys worth. Our guide was full of information it was like having our own historian.

We booked this tour over the free tours offered by the tourist bureau. You sometimes get what you pay for and we weren't disappointed with this tour. Sylvia was extremely knowledgable and provided many details and observations you would never get on your own. The tour went a bit long, however, most folks didn't want the tour to end. Just an outstanding way to see and understand Dublin and Irish history.

We went on this tour the day we arrived in Dublin. We were anxious to see the sights and get the lay of the land. This was the wrong tour for us! It started out at Trinity College with a very long winded historical anthology that lasted 20 minutes. We all just stood there while the guide talked and talked. He was clearly very learned on the topic, but not so good at reading groups. People were distracted, looking away, checking the time -- anything to break the monotony. Once we started walking, I hoped the long winded lectures would end. They did not. If you're a true history buff, this is the perfect tour for you. If not, meh.

This was a great historical view and description of Dublin by an excellent tour guide. He made certain that everyone in the group could hear him at the different stops and waited when necessary for other loud nearby noises to stop before continuing his narrative. He was also continuously available for questions by group members. I found the tour very interesting and informative.
