Guangzhou (Canton) China Day Trip from Hong Kong

Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Visit mainland China by catamaran on a full-day trip from Hong Kong and see some of China's iconic sights with an informative guide. Meet an adorable panda at Shenzhen Safari Park, discover Qin Dynasty terracotta warriors and their horses, and tour the metropolitan city of Guangzhou, formerly known as Canton. You’ll find everything from towering skyscrapers to ancient temples in China’s third largest city — a former trading hub located on the Pearl River — before returning by express train. Lunch, coach transport and a group visa are all included!

Please note: Due to tight schedule, this product is not recommended to travelers who need to leave Hong Kong on the same day.

After hotel pickup from your central Hong Kong or Kowloon hotel, your full-day trip to mainland China starts with a 50-minute catamaran ride and coach trip to Shekou Industrial Zone. China's first Special Economic Zone and a former customs station, the area served as a base for foreign oil workers in the 1980s. On weekdays, outside school holidays, start with a visit to a kindergarten to meet local children for a glimpse of everyday life the city.

Afterward, it's on to Shenzhen Safari Park to see the Chinese panda, considered to be a national treasure. Located on lovely Xili Lake, the wildlife park is home to rare and nationally protected animals including Asian elephants, red-crowned cranes, Siberian tigers and — of course — pandas!

Once you’ve observed this cuddly creature up close, you'll visit a market (if time permits). Watch as the locals go about their daily shopping, and test out your bargaining skills if you decide to purchase any items.

Your visit to the Exhibition Hall in Shekou is a must! See a display of Qin Dynasty terracotta warriors and horses unearthed in Xian — acclaimed as the Eighth Wonder of the World. You'll also find bronze wares more than 2,000 years old, wall paintings, and porcelain and pottery from the Tang Dynasty, all unearthed in Xian. Listen as your guide describes the significance of the terracotta army sculptures, which date back to the 3rd century BC and were buried to protect Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China.

Your coach tour continues to Guangzhou, the third largest city in China. After lunch at a local Chinese restaurant, embark on a city sightseeing tour of this bustling metropolis — the political, economic and cultural heart of Guangdong province. View highlights including the Six Banyan Tree Temple and the Memorial Hall of Dr. Sun Yat Sen as your guide informs your group about this important hub on the Pearl River.

Your day trip to mainland China ends with an accompanied return to Hong Kong by express train to Kowloon Station, followed by a Hong Kong Island transfer (if applicable) and drop-off at your hotel.

Please note: Your tour will not be confirmed unless you provide the following information at time of booking. This is required for your China group visa.

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Passport number
  • Nationality
  • Hotel name while staying in Hong Kong

Please make sure to send the copy of each passenger's passport which show the Full Name, Date of Birth and Passport number to complete the booking process.

You start your day 7am and return to your hotel at 1130pm it was such a long day and you spend 80 of your day travelling to and from places. The kindergarten was good but not worth a stop. The terracotta warriors were very disappointing and is just really a stop to sell you jade jewellery. The panda stop was also disappointing they were sleeping and thats all u get to see would of been better to spend more time at the zoo looking around. Then you spend the next 3 hrs driving to Guangzhou having lunch at 4pm, also disappointing cold food, holes in table cloths etc, then from there we walk to the market which was good and then drive to the temple which was also good. Then you drive to the train station and wait there for an hour or so till you catch the train back to Hong Kong. The day would be much better if you caught the train both ways to Guangzhou and spent more time seeing the local attractions. The tour guides for the day were very informative and helpful. But be aware they do ask for a tip which I thought was a bit much especially how expensive the tour is and there are three of them to tip.

In Guangzhou, we had dimsum lunch which was tasteless and cold. It also caused my diarrhea after I arrived Hongkong. The jade shop should be scrapped altogether as it was a waste of time. We were rushed at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial last stop before the train station back to Kowloon and did not have time to take good photos. The local tour guide in Shen Zhen/Guangzhou was hard to understand his English. Overall, it was not a good tour.

Only negative was this is a very long day, 16 hours from start to finish, would be beneficial if you could join the tour at the ferry terminal as was 2 hours from being collected to getting on ferry. Guides were extremely knowledgeable.

Alex, Albert and Bill the driver were great. A lot of information provided in a friendly and passionate way. A long but well timed day that gives you just a taste of China. What made this trip was one wonderful guide, Alex, accompanying the group from beginning to end.

While visiting China was fascinating, the Viatour guide Michelle rushed us through every location except a very small Jade museum with one terracotta warrior that then opened up to be a Hugh jewelry store, where we were given more then enough time to shop! Our tour started out with a sales pitch to buy a map and photos of what we were going to see that day along with a set of chopsticks. Most people in our group did not buy that. Our Dim Sum lunch which was delicious was very rushed. In and out in 20 minutes. When we went to visit the Pandas at a beautiful zoo, we took a few shots of the bears and then hurried back on the bus....never to see anything else at the zoo. When we went to see a monument and wanted to go inside, she told us no one could enter because they were having an important meeting inside that day, not sure that was true since I saw tourists all around the building. All in all, visiting China was fascinating but we would have preferred a tour that was not a forced march!

Disappointing.Experience second rate.Pandas behind a small glass enclosure in a zoo.The 4 warriors yes the only 4 displayed behind glass in a 'museum',or a jade retail outlet.Kindy saw us looking through windows to see classes in action. No interaction. Temple good , too long on bus. Save your money

It was a great way for a brief view of China, without the hassle of a full visa. Panda's were wonderful, lunch was great. Only fault would be the quality of the English of the Tour Guide that met us in China, could be better.

Great one day excursion from Hong Kong. As US citizens we didn't need a visa. Process to submit copy of passport in advance was simple. We spent a lot of time on the bus and the train, but if you want to get into mainland China from Hong Kong to see it and say you've been there, this is a great tour.

Long, day, well run tour. Picked us up from our hotel and dropped us off as well and that certainly was good service, saved us trying to find _br/_ where to go and finding our way home after. Our guide, Alex, carried out the tour in a very friendly and competent manner. Thanks for a great experience!

They try to do to much. We felt we weren't in any one location long enough to get a good feel for the places we were visiting. We also felt a little uncomfortable/surreal in the Kindergarten especially if you consider were you visit after which is the zoo. You are encouraged to take photos of the children as if they were a show. There is little to no need to visit the Terracotta exhibit which is only and opportunity for them to try and sell you stuff. You get two tour Guides, Alex who we met us in Hong Kong was great, he stayed with us through immigration explained the process thoroughly and helped where he could. He even came back with us on the train, however once in china be prepared for the second guide to take over and bombard you with numbers, x number of Mcds in China, X number of KFC's etc etc etc.

Overall a great day. Michelle was amazing. She was friendly and helpful and had a great sense of humor. My favorite part was seeing the pandas and the dinner and market tour in Guangzhou. I didn't care for the Xian warriors so much, but probably because I've actually been to Xian. I would recommend if you want to see a bit of mainland China.

From tour description expected more than 1 warrior and 1 horse at entrance to a gift shop. Pandas were in glass cages not natural habitat as are most other overseas pandas. Lunch poor, mostly deep fried and little variety. Guide unpleasant when I asked about the warriors. Wrong birthdate on tour manifesto caused problem at immigration. Officer realised and was pleasant going into China but lady unpleasant coming out. I called guide over to help but he refused, said to keep guiet and lady was girlfriend. Very unsettling and upsetting Also arrived back at hotel at 11.30pm two hours later than advertised. Will not use tours again. Guide needs to develop some empathy and be more concerned with guests comforts rather than trying to show how impressive he was.

Seeing the pandas was the highlight. It is a long day with several long rides, either via coach, catamaran or train, to reach the destinations. It was nice to see the sights along the way and see how life is in China. Enjoyed the dim sum lunch and the walk to the local market after, wished there was more time to do more interactive time like that. We are very happy we did this tour as it showed us some aspects of life in China that we did not know.

Fantastic opportunity to visit China, however the panda visit makes you feel a bit sad.I am told though in the winter they spend time outside but summertime they need airconditioning suppose you have to understand.Terracotta warriors was a bit bland as no photos are allowed and then it is a glorified selling opportunity in what is a glorified jewellery shop, however some great original souvenirs.Great tour guides and the train back is cool from Guangzhou but you can only take 20 cigarettes at 1.10 a packet.

The guides were great and the tour gave me lots information about, and insight into, life in southern China. Thanks to Michelle and Richard. I only case this tour to see the pandas. Mths wrre magnificent. But not happy. Their enclosure wasn't fantastic and one of them was sitting on the floor, licking it, for the whole time we were their. The other one ended up banging on the door of the enclosure. I would recommend the tour overall, apart from the pandas it more than met expectations. Maybe see the pandas somewhere else. Ocean World?.

I will be honest as our family has attended several trips/tours with Viator - this was not the best one. First of all - early meeting at one of the hotels was not necessary - for 2 hours we travelled through different hotels to pick up other travellers - to enter a ferry, eventually after 9 AM. We were waiting outside, in a windy area with kids, our guide has tried to keep us away from the crowd but it was cold! Then the ferry trip - with no places indicated - nothing really we have seen or experienced until we reached the immigration in China - and we had to go through it separately, individually, despite the fact that we had two children, adults first and then children. Not as a family. Kids were horrified. The first stop was a typical kindergarten - well, really interesting but typical was not a right word - a lot of propaganda we could sense there, wonder why..... The next stop/Chinese warriors exhibition was interesting I have to say as well as pandas were really cool - kids loved it and that was the purpose of our entire trip. So everybody was happy. We had two guides, one from Hong Kong and one from China, Mainland, interesting comments, so different as you can imagine. The trip through a busy, Chinese highway was strange - no rules for drivers, kind of scary I have to say, if you have never experienced it - you need to see it. We were all late for lunch. It looks that nobody cares in the restaurant - the food was cold as we were late and a waitress was upset and made some comments could not really understand as I have not passed my tea cup to her - well, this is an non-existing customer service certainly, the entire table was horrified/scared and said nothing and I could not even rank this restaurant on on trip advisor - it simply does not exist there. A plus - the guides can show you civilised bathrooms - you would really appreciate it. Believe me. Then the trip to the Chinese market was really interesting - but too quick, no time to take photos, and then we had to wait again at the train station for the train to come, and take us back to Hong Kong. Well, an interesting trip certainly, again - kids loved pandas, the guides tried really hard but their mention about tipping at the end was not really an appropriate one. Maybe this is culturally - something different to experience for sure. An interesting trip but I would not repeat it - it could have been better organised from a first minute where we could not locate the hotel and maybe a smaller group 2 families? would work better?

THis trip is not worth the money! It is far too long and not very interesting at all. You get to see ONE terracotta warrior at a jade factory where they want to sell you jewellery. Going to a kindergarten and bening encouraged to take photos of other peoples small children is unethical, in my opinion. Going on a 2 hr bus ride to have a very poor lunch in certainly not worth it. The guides were fine and very knowledgeable but the company is offering an incredible low rate product._br/_ On another note I booked an airport pick up which I was told would not happen I contacted Viator who never replied so I will never book viator trips ever again. Incredibly poor customer service and a total disregard for the customer. Lots of emails about buying further trips but no replies to actual complaints/enquiries or follow up. A very shoddy service all round. Kath Huxley

Review by:   Michelle W,    March 2017 Review: 1 star rating: I do not recommend this
This was a horrible trip, and I wouldn't advise wasting the time or money. We were picked up around 07:30, then took a ferry ride with no visibility of any passing scenery, then sat in a bus in China traffic until 15:30. The bus smelled disgusting because the bus driver smoked cigarettes on the bus at every break. During that time, there was no food or drink offered or available to purchase. SEVEN HOURS AND NO FOOD OR DRINK OFFERED OR AVAILABLE. So if you have kids, be prepared. During the ride on the bus, there were a few brief stops - first, to a Chinese kindergarten which was fine and interesting, then to a jewelry shop where you're urged to buy jade jewelry this is the supposed terra cotta warrior stop - which is nothing more than two terra cotta pieces behind a glass case that is discussed for two minutes before the group is shuttled off to get more sales pitches to buy jade jewelry. The last stop on the route to Guangzhou is to a zoo to see two pandas in small dark cages pace back and forth to a door in the back where they obviously spend a lot of time scratching, because all of the paint is missing where they scratch. It's utterly soul sucking and sad as hell. I'm not one of those people who is fundamentally opposed to keeping animals in zoos, but it's borderline fraud for Viator to describe this stop on the tour as a Safari Park. It is a zoo, and the cages are tiny and dark and depressing. The next stop is to a Guangzhou restaurant where you stop for dim sum, and then have free time to look around after. When you're coming from Hong Kong, you can't really shop because most places there don't take credit cards, and the currency is different from Hong Kong dollars, and there are no ATMs. If there is something that you really must have, then rest assured, the driver and the tour guide are more than happy to exchange your Hong Kong dollar for Chinese yuan for an outrageous upcharge they won't disclose the upcharge, but we figured it out when we watched a family get hosed on the exchange rate and then calculated the exchange ourselves - we, like 90 of the rest of the group, were huddled around the guide and bored out of our minds during the shopping part of the trip, because there wasn't much to do. After that was a brisk walk through a street market no time to stop and check stuff out or you'll get separated from the group then back to the bus. Then we did a quick stop at a modern theater and a temple before heading to the train station. Once at the train station, we waited for TWO HOURS for our train DOING NOTHING. The tour operators could have cut down or out any one of the other parts of the tour to avoid making us sit in the train station for two hours. We ended up not getting back to Hong Kong until 23:30 - long after most restaurants had closed for dinner which, again, was something that the families with small children were understandably pretty upset about. The cherry on top of this terrible sundae was that the tour guide offered no information about the culture or the history or the geography of the area. When he spoke which was only occasionally, all he talked about was how many cell phones and autos and other widgets China manufactures. Maybe that's just a complaint personal to me. I personally don't care about that. Some might find that interesting. Overall, I hated this trip and I'm more angry about the number of hours of my vacation that were wasted than anything else.

Unique experience for us. Propaganda evident. Long 2 hour bus ride Shenzen to Guangzhou had no heating - poor. _br/_ Dim Sum lunch was good and freshly cooked._br/_ Alex, guide from Hong Kong excellent. Chinese guide good but kept giving too much data about size, position in the world, longest etc, sounded like he was trying to impress. This tour was a great way to see and go into mainland China if you don't have much time since it seems a bit more difficult to get around on your own there. We spent a lot of time at the jade factory where the staff at the factory spent a lot of time pushing to sell us jade. Perhaps this part could be taken off the trip since it was timely and we didn't have much time in the country. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and got us through security and through customs fast. Not a lot of people on our tour enjoyed the restaurant, the dim sum was not what they expected.. At the end they asked us for tips which felt a little weird also. Overall beautiful country but the tour guide could help do better at managing our time to have more time to see the beautiful views and city of Guangzhou.

This was well worthwhile, with our highlight being a visit to a kindergarten and seeing gorgeous children at play. The various forms of transport were all excellent and it was interesting to see how immigration worked between Mainland China and Hong Kong. Our tour guide was very instructive and helpful. We had a hold-up due to an accident on the freeway but that happens world-wide. We loved the lunch.

Had an absolutely excellent time. If you are going to Hong Kong and have never been to Mainland China and want to, this is the tour for you. Everything except tips and souvenirs is included, and its quite nice to have your visa taken care of for you customs is a little scary for westerns, I think. We got a great feel for the region of south China and got to see so many amazing things- big cities, a kindergarten the kids are so cute and friendly, Guangzhou's thriving food market, real terracotta warriors from Xian, the Sun Yat Sen cultural memorial, PANDAS!! Lunch at the Fragrant Lotus House is SO GOOD- its authentic dim sum vegetarian options are available as well. Cannot recommend highly enough. Michelle and Albert, our tour guides, were fantastic as well.

WOW! What an experience. We were in Hong Kong for just three nights decided to spend one whole day in China with this tour. This was one the best days in our 13 day multi country tour. Well planned, good locations chosen to visit, two cities visited, few other stops, filled with content, minimal walking if that is an issue for some, authentic Dim Sum in a 122 old year restaurant for lunch ... it is not going to get more authentic than that!, fantastic trip and fantastic experience. You will ride a High Speed Ferry, a Tour Bus and a high speed train, all clean, comfortable, air conditioned, modern, safe, etc. The guides were simply outstanding. Both guides were so knowledgable but more impressive was their English. So well spoken and articulate. No boring parts on this trip. You will get chances to catch a couple of naps on the 2 hour bus ride from the first city to the second city and on the train ride back to Hong Kong. Lunch is late, like 2:30 PM, late because your pickup was around 7:00 AM-ish. So best to pack a few snacks to hold you until then. I was able to purchase gifts in China using HK dollars, I was surprise that the merchants accepted the HK currency. Be prepared to take lots of photos if you have never been to China.

After a boat ride up the river to China got to see some of the sights in a new modern Chinese city. Then went on to Canton which is a older city. Quite an interesting contrast to more modern Hong Kong. Guide was very knowledgeable and made sure we passed thru customs and immigration without any trouble. Had a nice lunch with plenty of unique Chinese foods. Did a walking tour thru one of the marketplaces. Area was very crowded as locals were busy shopping for the Chinese New Year. Traveled back by train after a long day of touring. It was amazing to see a small sample of the Terracotta Warriors but you had to got thru a big jewelry shop to do so. A big tourist trap! Seemed like every tour ended up in a gift or jewelry shop.

This was a nice trip for an introduction to China. The guide picked us up at our hotel right on time. The boat ride went smoothly. The second tour guide that we met enroute was very good and informative, as he explained and described a lot of things. The bus part of the tour was nice too to get us to the second city and tour it. The lunch that was provided was OK, as it was a good sample of local Chinese food but nobody in the group liked the food much. WE did like the walk through the local market to see how the locals shop and what they shop for.The train trip back to Hong Kong went well and was right on time.

This is a tour we thoroughly enjoyed. Our guide, who was with us throughout, was informative, friendly and helpful. We also had another guide join us for the mainland China portion of the trip. Be prepared to absorb a lot of information._br/_ Its an early start. We needed to be at the pickup point at 7.30am. It was a hotel about 10 minutes walk from ours in Causeway Bay. We joined 11 others and proceeded in a coach to the ferry terminal. here we had an opportunity to grab a coffee and bite to eat before the catamaran left at 9am. Warning, do have breakfast or eat at this point as we didn't get lunch until after 3pm ! The journey to Shenzhen gives some amazing views of Hong Kong from the water and takes about an hour. The visit to the kindergarten was special ! The pandas were asleep but the whole experience there at the zoo was interesting. I found the terracotta exhibition fascinating but maybe too much time spent here. The drive to Guangzhou took around two hours but it was a great insight into life bordering the fast road. On arrival we enjoyed a Dim Sum lunch in the old part of the city before embarking on a walking tour of the area including the markets. Fascinating to say the least. Further stops at a temple and memorial hall as well as a drive around this major, very dynamic, city._br/_ The day ended with us catching an express train back into Hong Kong taking just under two hours before a coach pickup back to our original departure point. We got back to our hotel at 9pm._br/_ I wouldn't have missed this tour for anything. Informative and insightful I had to pinch myself at times that I was actually there._br/_ Its a long day and yes we could have done with a 'coffee stop' and yes lunch is mid afternoon. But hey what an opportunity to visit a tiny but significant part of China in a day.

I took this tour mostly for the Pandas. Though we did see them, they were behind glass and we were there for only a very short period. If this is reason for taking this tour, do some more research because there are better tours. The 1.50 but ride to Guangzhou just for lunch was a bit disappointing.

Fascinating brief glimpse into various aspects of an amazingly diverse and interesting country. Close-up chance to see giant pandas and some of the Terracotta Warriors was amazing. Market with critters galore on sale was incredible contrast to China's booming hi-tech side. Guides proved to be very informative and interesting people - but clearly acting on an agenda to 'talk up' all their country's perceived political and social/economic achievements. Visit to a kids' nursery Mandarin language compulsory there despite parents having Cantonese was an example of this. However, in all this was an absolutely enjoyable one-day outing. Highly recommended.

In a small group of 9 which was ideal.Extremely well organised with very little waiting about and walking amazing considering the logistics involved. Kindergarten kids were enchanting and we arrived as they were doing their daily 10 min of PE. Both HK and China reps full of facts and figures and tended to get info overload at times. Did not enjoy the Dim Sum meal at all but this would be the case anywhere. Back to hotel at 11.30pm satisfied and contented.
