Ride the Steel Rails

Jasper, Canada

Ride the rails over the Yellowhead Pass, the border between Alberta and British Columbia, following the Fraser River, and past Mount Robson, the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies. The van tour includes stops for wildlife, points of interest including the Mt. Robson Information Centre. Depending on the time of year, this can be an excellent tour for seeing bear, moose, eagles, salmon, deer, elk and coyotes.

At Dunster, visit the Dunster General Store, Dunster's answer to Walmart. They have everything from the mail to the chicken feed all under one roof. This is the opportunity for many people on holidays to take a short train excursion without signing up for traveling across Canada. The train trip portion is approximately 2.5 hours and the return to Jasper by van is 138 km with stops for wildlife and points of interest. Generally the van takes about 2 hours to return to Jasper.

Train to Dunster was less spectacular than expected. Could have had more time in Dunster before returning to Jasper. Bus ride back to Jasper was very enjoyable commentary by bus driver was quite informative and entertaining.

I was ill and could not go no refund. My wife went. Nice scenery, but commentary on train on the sites was sparse. She liked Dunstin. On return trip, no commentary by van driver.

Loved the tour. Bit confusing in the beginning as the tour leader didn't really explain the process of how to get on the train, tickets, etc. Because we were so late getting to the train station, we didn't have very good seats on the train. But overall the tour was beautiful and well worth it.

Train journey was OK, but how many trees do you want to count over a 2 1/2 hour period......? Return trip in minibus was fine being the only customers/passengers may have had some bearing on this but overall cannot really recommend this tour. Enjoyable but.......

Ride into the mountains was a unique experience and the view of mt. Robson was the icing on the cake. The whole trip was well organised with tickets provided and everybody getting an opportunity to sit in the glass dome upper level. The commentary was very good too. Got to see wildlife on way back.

We had good weather and a great conductor who alerted us to views that would be coming up. I am a keen photographer, and because everyone was trying to get photos of Mt Robson, I wasn't able to get a clear shot of it. The trip itself was great.

Great train ride. we were allowed to go in the glass viewing carriage as it was empty. we saw 2 bears and scenery was beautiful. trip back by van to Jasper could have been better. the guide . On 2 hour journey back to jasper I expected the guide to give some commentary about local wildlife ect on the way but he hardly spoke at all

The views from the train and van were amazing! The train was comfortable and had plenty of leg room, even for my 6 ft. 7 and #34; husband. I thought we were going to get more info about our surroundings during the train ride, but that was minimal. Our guide coming back was entertaining and knowledgeable.

Lovely trip by train with spectacular scenery. Well worth doing. The trip back in the mini bus was -fantastic as we had a guide call Jean-Marie who was very knowledge, showed us bears and a lot of both area knowledge and nature info.

Initially thought it was a bit expensive, but it was worth it. Beautiful scenery seen from the dome car. Ride back to Jasper was interesting and informative with a very good guide/driver. Saw a few bears and learned a bit about the area.

Ride the Steel Rails was a fun trip. Lots of beautiful scenery on the train trip. The van ride back to Jaspar was full of side trips and good conversation. Would highly recommend this activity for anyone visiting the Jaspar area.

If you like trains this is a good tour for you. The ride is comfortable, and we had an entire train car to ourselves. The scenery is outstanding, but we did not see any wildlife. The train cars are enclosed, so after a while it starts to feel like a tour bus. There is beverage service on the train. The ride back was a lot more enjoyable. Chuck, out tour guide was excellent and extremely knowledgeable. The price is not bad, but again the van ride was a lot more enjoyable.

We had a very good time on this trip, the train was awesome with great views and a lot of wildlife. The bus driver was knowledgeable and stopped at some great places along the way back. We would recommend this

The ride was comfortable, informative Thank you Tracy and the weather was fairly co-operative. Chuck drove us back from the drop off point and was a wealth of information about the mountains, and historical features of the railroad. My only 'disappointment' really, was that the tracks follow the highway so closely, that the views were not really 'new'. I guess I was hoping for a deeper trip into the back country to see views that you can't see from the highways. It was a good way to spend an afternoon though, and something 'different' to do in Jasper. I have recommended this to others.

The train trip was beautiful and gave a good taste of the mountain experience. The guide on our bus tour was_br/_ excellent...sadly I cannot remember his name. A former forester he educated us on many aspects of the forests surrounding us. He was kind, thoughful, funny and he new his stuff. Tks

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip. The train ride was wonderful. When we were on our way back our driver, Dieter, took us on a great tour, stopping and pointing out numerous points. Also took us down to Rearguard Falls which was fantastic. All in all I really think it's well worth going.

This trip is not just for the train enthusiasts but anyone who likes to travel through fantastic scenery in comfort. To see the Rockies from a seat in the "Dome car" has to be one of life's more memorable experiences. Money well spent.

My daughter, my daughter-in-law and myself thoroughly enjoyed our journey through the Yellowhead Pass to Dunster. Our hostess on the train was very friendly and informative and the observation car was excellent. The Dunster General Store was extraordinary and the drive back to Jasper was full of more wonderful scenery and commentary from our driver.

My wife and I really enjoyed our day on the Skeena railway - the organisation was spot on. There weren't very many passengers on the train on the day that we went so we were allowed to view the awesome landscape from the observation car - drinks on board too, what more could you ask for. The couriers were informative during the trip and pointed out the main points of interest. The driver who took us back to Jasper gave a geography lesson on the way home and we stopped off at the lovely Robson Park information centre. It was a great day and a welcome change to be able to sit back and let someone else do the driving. If you are thinking of taking the Rocky Mountaineer train I think this would be a good way to get a taster first.
