Communism Tour in a Genuine Trabant Automobile from Krakow

Krakow, Poland

The Wall may be over and done with, but many of Krakow's most famous communist artifacts are alive and well!

Visit Nowa Huta, the district that still bears testament to the power of the Soviets. Most notably, your guide will lead you on a in-depth tour of the place that was originally given as a gift to Krakow by Stalin himself! These labyrinths of the tenements were done in imitation of the renaissance and meant to be a model communist city. It later became one of the centers of the revolution and resistance within Poland, leading to the eventual overthrow of the Communist government.

This guided tour is complete with transportation in genuine Trabant automobiles - cars manufactured by the Eastern Bloc specialists. During your 2.5 hour tour, your young and energetic guide will lead you through this one-of-a-kind city and up to the gates of the steel mill that was originally in the heart of this district.

Upgrade to the Communism DELUXE Tour in Krakow (4 hours):

The Communism DELUXE Tour upgrade is a must-do for any visitor to Krakow! This tour was recently made famous by travel documentary maker Michael Palin after his feature in 'Palins New Europe' series in 2007. Also recommended by the BBC, Reuters, New York Times, Lonely Planet guidebooks and many others. An extended version of the standard Communism Tour in a Trabant automobile, the Communism Deluxe tour includes a trip to a Communist-era restaurant and guided visit to our private museum. Explore everyday life in Poland in the 1970's in our exclusive and unchanged Communist apartment. This deluxe tour includes the rare opportunity to eat pickled cucumbers and toast times past with Communist relic, Mr. Vieslav (upon request). You can also try your hand at driving the trusty Trabant. Enjoy lunch in an authentic Commie milk bar canteen.

Great tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Really learnt a lot about another side of Polish history that we otherwise would have missed.

Highlight of my trip to Krakow. I left the tour with so much new knowledge about Poland and Krakow. Our guide was very sweet and she even drove me to wherever I had to go afterwards. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who has an interest in communist Europe.

If you visit Krakow and have any interest in the recent history of Poland you would be doing yourself a dis-service by not booking this tour. I highly recommend the deluxe tour as it also includes lunch in one of the legendary milkbars of the communist era. Sparse, but delicious. Also, if you have the ability to ask for a specific tour guide you must request Agnieszka Masternak. Not only is her English immaculate, but her knowledge and personal experiences of the transition from communism to capitalism made the tour and experience that much more enriching. A must if visiting Krakow.

Absolutely brilliant tour with Maciek whose knowledge of local history and depth of knowledge about Krakow made this a really memorable trip in a lime green trabant._br/_ A must do if visiting this city.

We were so fortunate to have Carolina as our guide. She was full of good information and fun to be with. We were especially interested in learning about Krakow during the Communist era, and this tour did exactly that. We even had a chance to visit an apartment that was furnished as it would have been during that time. The pictures and video added so much, in addition to being able to see how families lived during that time. It was an amazing four hours, and we highly recommend it.

What an amazingly fun time! From the moment our guide met us, folks marveled after his lime-green Trabant parked near our hotel at Wawel Castle, and were taking photos. So, it was a heady and unique experience even from the start. Nowa Huta was fascinating on all levels. While we were more interested in politics initially, we also came to learn lots about architecture, food and culture. And also about the Trabant itself. The shag carpet in the back seat was kinda the best thing ever! This tour is an easy and complete mix of fun, adventure and education, with a warmly personable and knowledgeable guide. Most highly recommended.

What a great tour, the authentic green Trabant - great! Our tour guide was fantastic, we must thank her for a really enjoyable trip, very knowledgeable, an all round lovely person, and we do hope that she will be able to go on and finish her studies as well. Cannot thank her enough for her insights and anecdotes into both the communist history in general and also how her family lived within the communist system._br/_ Would we do this again - you betcha!

Review by:   Bonalyn J N,    October 2015 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
I took this trip on September 20, 2015. Overall, the trip left me underwhelmed. There isn't a whole lot to see in Nowa Huta except the facades of Stalinist architecture and the entrance to the steelworks you are not allowed to enter. You can eat at milk bars arouns the main square in the Old City--frequenting one in Nowa Huta is unnecessary, and the '70s Commie apartment reminded me of my granny's musty old flat. the guide was more of a driver--no information about what it was actually like to live in those times was provided, and most questions went unanswered, maybe due to the fact that the guide wasn't born then Crazy guide drivers are young. For example, we were shown actual ration cards but the guide could relate no stories about how rationing actually worked, the black market or what people could actually buy. For anyone with a real interest in life under the Communist regime, the experience will be disappointing.

Nice couple of hours in rainy Krakow - funny guide, very relaxed atmosphere and unhurried cruising around in a Trabant, of course! I truly enjoyed this tour and the history of Nowa Huta the guide explained while we two visitors were sipping some Polish beer. Warmly recommended.

We were lucky enough to have an authentic Trabant for this trip. The guide was very knowledgeable and put us ease immediately. The meal in the milk bar was certainly different and something I'm glad I experienced. Highly recommended.

On the recommendation of other Viator respondents I booked the Deluxe tour and was not disappointed. The experience was brilliant and the guide outstanding. Driving the Trabant was great fun and perhaps the highlight of the visit to Nova Huta. We had coffee at an old haunt of the communist elite and lunch at a state supported worker's cafeteria called a Milk Bar. The tour of a worker's flat was also spot-on, especially the traditional welcome shot of vodka and pickle. The added experiences and time that are part of the Deluxe tour made for a memorable outing.

We had an informative and amusing guide who gave us a great description of life in Communist era Krakow. Our "loud" car provided trouble free transport despite its protests and this is a great way to see Nowa Huta. It was one of our highlights .

This was the best time we had in krakow. Peter our guide was very informative and intelligent. He was also very funny and kept us entertained with anecdotes throughout our trip to nova huta. We both had a turn at driving the trabant on some waste ground and this was the cherry on the cake.

Magnificent, reminded me my childhood, things I have forgotten. And for my partner who is from West , was an incredible funny experience to see the way Eastens used to live:). I would only recomend this tour to the people who has sence of humor and not afraid to experience new things including food. Well done guys!!!

Hilarious!!!! This is one of the best trips we've been on. The guide was excellent, VERY funny - we pretty much laughed non-stop for 2.5 hours. Driving in this iconic car was a bone-rattling experience! Our only regret is that we didn't book the longer tour because we didn't want to it end. It was the highlight of our weekend in Krakow :-)

Terrific tour! With so many Eastern European countries destroying remnants of their communist past, it's great to see a tour that confronts the past head-on...showing both the horror and humor of that era. Highly recommended!

The tour operator as the name says our wacky guide met all requirements, very entertaining and most of all very interesting. The tour gave us a brief look how and why communism failed. Travelling in the Trabant vehicle was something else worth doing to see how far ahead the western automobile industry was at the time.
