Zakopane and Tatras Mountains Day Tour from Krakow

Krakow, Poland

Experience a ride up a funicular railway to the top of Mt. Gubalówka and take a walk around the peak. Visit the oldest part of Zakopane with its old mountaineer cottages and ash trees. Experience the true Zakopane atmosphere when you walk along Krupówki.

Nestled at the foot of the spectacular Tatra mountains, Zakopane is the winter sports capital of Poland and its most famous resort. During the winter, plentiful snow and challenging runs make for excellent skiing while the summer months offer hikers mountain lakes, glacial valleys and waterfalls. The mountains are also home to a unique and diverse range of flora and fauna.

Your tour starts with a ride up a funicular railway to the top of Mt. Gubalówka to see a wonderful view of the Tatras.

After a short walk around the peak, return down the funicular to visit the oldest part of Zakopane where the old cottages of the mountaineers still stand, surrounded by ash trees and blackened by the sun. These wooden houses and churches were built in the Zakopane style by the remarkable Polish artist, Witkacy.

In addition to the traditional mountain architecture, magnificent folk costumes and jewelry have also survived here to this day. To better experience the true Zakopane atmosphere, take a walk along Krupówki, the central mall, lined with restaurants, cafes, boutiques and souvenir shops. Here you will have a lunch break.

The last stop in Zakopane is either the Tatra Museum or, on the way back to Krakow, a visit to the lovely old wooden village of Chocholów.

Had a good day considering the weather was not too good, rained quite heavily some of the day, View of mountains was not too good because of the weather. I did clear up for a while when we were in zakopane we sat outside and had lunch which was really nice Best crumble ever with cream. Small pretty place. I am sure it wouldve been better had the weather been good. There was only 3 of us travelling on trip so were in a car. The driver was good he did take us around and was very helpful. As always it was well organised by Viator

It was snowing in Zakopane and it was magical. The tour guide was knowledgeable and I enjoyed the day.

I was expecting a coach trip, but it was just me and the tour guide! This made it a more personal tour, whereby I learned a lot more about Zakopane. The guide was very knowledgable and I had a great day out.

Andre, our guide, was lovely and very knowledgeable. The weather was glorious, so the views at the top of the funicular were breathtaking. I wish I had done what others in the group did, and stayed up there rather than following 'the tour' and going back down. Although then I wouldn't have seen the graveyard, which was very interesting. Zakopane itself is very pretty, but the crowds were horrendous, and completey ruined it for me. We were left to our own devices for about 3 hours, but there wasn't really that much to do other than wander up and down the main street with everyone else. I would much rather have either stayed at the top for longer although it was crowded there too, and spent less time in the town. Having said all that, its definitely worth going, just for the views.

Would highly recommend this tour. We had an brilliant day. The views from the top are stunning. It had recently snowed and was very cold but we were well wrapped up. There are lots of market stalls at the top and bottom of the mountain and many places to have some food or drink. We ate in Tunel pizza restaurant which was very good and reasonably priced. As we were there at the end of December it was very busy as there are many tourists visiting for skiing holidays. The traffic is very busy into Zakopane so my only wish would be that the tour left the hotels an hour earlier to allow more time for the visit. It was amazing!

We visited Zakopane in August but it is considered to be a winter destination with lots of skiing trails. Even in the summer we could enjoy the scenic beauty of Zakopane and the Tatras mountains from certain vantage points. A must for all nature lovers.

Throughly enjoyed this tour provided by Cracow Tours, our tour guide Jack was very knowledgeable and informative providing a detailed insight into the Zakopane history, geography and the local customs, Zakopane is a delightful place and the views from the viewing area of the snow covered Tatra mountains were absolutely stunning, I have visited Zakopane in the early spring and in December when the entire mountain area was covered in snow AMAZING_br/_ Special thank to our tour guide on this tour.

Zakopane was beautiful and Christopher our tour guide was knowledgeable and humorous. If you go to Zakopane stop at one of the numerous booths selling a cheese only from that area. I loved it.

Mountains are beautiful. Tour guide great. Trip as a whole kind of disappointing. The area you are taken to is just filled with shops and too commercialized. Museum is a waste of time. Church stop on the way was a nice touch. We asked if we could see waterfalls but was told that's not possible, yet other groups were taken there.

This tour isn't at all what you might expect, it's basically shopping with a view. An amazing view !

Was a good trip! Except for the very cramped van that drove us 2 hrs each way. Restricted movement and very uncomfortable for a small size me.

Amazing guide who really wanted to be there! He not only had brilliant knowledge about all aspects of the trip but also allowed us to deviate from the 'set plan' of going to the museum etc. Instead we partially climbed this brilliant mountain with a beautiful waterfall at the top and then proceeded to Zakopane. Zakopane itself is very pretty in good weather and gives spectacular views at the top of the funicular._br/_ All 5 of us on the tour had an amazing time and I cant praise our guide enough!

The weather was clear so we were looking forward to going to the top of Mt. Gubalówka to view the breathtaking views of the Tatras Mountains and the surrounding landscape. Unfortunately the guide only allowed us about twenty minutes on the top of this hill before we were told that we need to continue the tour of Zakopane. This was ridiculous as this was the main attraction of this tour. This was made worse since later on we found out that we had about 3 hours of free time in Zakopane which is more than enough. At least an hour should have been allocated to staying on top of Mt. Gubalówka._br/_ Having said all of the above, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and we were picked up/ dropped off quite close to our hotel without any issues.

Very good trip and Alexandra was a great guide!_br/_ What I would change is:_br/_ a I didn't find riding to the top of Mt Gubalówka interesting given the fact that we spend lot of time at the lifts waiting _br/_ b The Tatra mountains museum has nothing to offer and thats why some of us didnt go at all_br/_ I would definitely prefer to go to villages like Chocholów or other traditional villages .

I'm not sure I'd take this tour again. The guide was fantastic and the day flowed smoothly but the actually places we visited hardly seemed worth the time and money to get to them. I'm sure they were quite stunning once but they are very cheap and overrun with tacky tourist souvenirs and fairground events these days which detracted from the day, sadly.

A really lovely tour and a terrific day out from the city during our stay in Kraków . Andrew the guide was excellent. Enjoyed the drive in the lovely Mercedes mini coach, the landscape was gorgeous, great funicular ride, the oldest church in Zakopane and graveyard were very interesting. A little chilly even in June. Like everywhere in the world now, Zakopane has become very commercial, but still lovely._br/_ Anne, Dublin, Ireland.

Go on this trip if you want a snapshot of the beautiful countryside and pretty rural villages that surround Krakow. Our guide Kristof was brilliant. Stop at village of little wooden houses amazing. Zakopane very touristy , view of the Tatra Mountains when we got off the funicular fab.

Review by:   Merryn M,    May 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
I was very disappointed in this tour. Although our guide was pleasant and informative the day seemed to me to be little more than a bus trip to Zakapone. We had a clear day weatherwise and could luckily see the Tatra Mountains. Unfortunately after taking the vernicular to the top for a lookout we stayed only half an hour and came back to the town. Then we visited a local church and its graveyard and then were left to explore. we could meet up for a tour of the local museum. So my daughter and I and another tourist who joined us had a wander, had lunch had another wander, had afternoon tea, had another wander until it was time to return to the bus. I was hoping to go for a walk at the top of the mountain. I wish I had known that I could have stayed at the top and looked around, gone for a walk or a small hike in the fresh air and just soaked in the view. That was the stunning part of the day the view and we only saw it for 30 minutes. We passed a train line that ended nearby in years gone by that would have made an interesting stop. There is not enough of interest in Zakapone for a full day. Shop after shop is simply selling tourist souvenirs. The markets are selling the local smoked cheese and accompanying jam or furs and warm jackets. The attraction is the view of the mountain range and we left it in half an hour. I felt like I had wasted a day. For me this was a very disappointing tour.

This tour is a bit overpriced however the Tatra mountains are well worth seeing. We left at 8am for a 2 hour journey each way.We were taken up in a cable car to view one of the mountain range.I have since spoken with some polish work colleagues and they have informed this is only a short cable car and there is another longer cable car with a much better view a bus ride away from Zakopane. We were only given 15 minutes up the mountain then we came back down to visit 2 churches. One was the oldest church which was a wooden church but we spent longer in the cementery than we did up the mountain while our guide told us about certain people that were buried there. We then had about 3-4 hrs of spare time in Zakopane. There is a busy market and several good restaurants in Zakopane. You can walk up the hill to a park at the top.We then met up at 3pm to visit the zakopane history museum. We returned back at 4pm.i would like to go back maybe on the train and visit this other cable car and spend longer in the mountains.

the guide was excellent and very Passionate about Zakopane and the area _br/_ would recommend anyone going on this trip _br/_ the only down side would have liked to spent more time at the top and less in the graveyard

A great day out but unfortunately for us it was raining and cloudy and it was impossible to see the mountians. We made the most of it by visiting museums and markets in Zakopane and having the funicular trip although there was not much to see at the top of Gubalowka._br/_ The Gazdowo Kuznia restaurant is worth going to. Great giuide Jacek explained s much about the area and the local people._br/_ This trip would be great on a clear day

The guide, Andrew, was wonderful. It was only myself and another couple, so very small tour. Sadly the day was completely foggy and we didn't get to see the mountains. We had 3 hours free in Zakopane, which I thought was a bit too long, unless you like shopping. On a clear day, I would imagine they spend more time at the top of the funicular. I enjoyed the ethnographic museum as well.

An enjoyable tour. Our tour guide Andrew was very experienced and knowledgeable giving us an insight into the area's history and culture. The mountains are very beautiful although a clear day is needed to fully appreciate them. Unfortunately the tour did not take us right into the mountains as hoped although the funicular to the viewing platform afforded stunning views. Zakopane was a little disappointing as it is not unlike any other mountain resort town I have visited i.e.touristy!. The museum was small but interesting.

The tour guide, an older gentleman from Krakow was amazing. You could truly feel the excitement in his voice, you can tell he loves sharing the history of his country. Had no issues. In the rush of leaving the bus we forgot to tip the guide, we wish there was an option now because he was great. TY

Loved this trip. Good to see the country side during the bus trip. We could not see the Tatras on the day due to the low cloud cover, so the trip up with the funicular was a bit pointless, we basically went up and straight down again as other than seeing the mountains there wasn't much more to do up there according to the tour guide anyway however the market was great.

This was an efficient day trip, driver and guide were OK. Our Guide spoke about the history of the area but did not encourage questions. We had a nice stop at a wood sculptor's shop, a quick jaunt.
