Historical Malacca Full-Day Tour from Kuala Lumpur including Lunch

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Explore the historic town of Malacca, a key port for trade between the East and the West with influences of former Asian and European rulers evident throughout this UNESCO World Heritage City. Your knowledgeable guide will share the historical and cultural significance of top sites including St Paul's Hill, St Paul's church, the Stadthuys, the fortress A’Famosa (Porta de Santiago), and Cheng Hoon Teng, Malaysia’s oldest Chinese temple. You'll also enjoy a typical Malaysian lunch and a stroll along Jonker Street on this fascinating Malacca day trip from Kuala Lumpur.

After pickup from your Kuala Lumpur hotel, you'll travel approximately two hours south in a comfortable air-conditioned coach on a day trip to Malacca, the oldest trading port in Malaysia. On this Malacca day tour you'll learn from your expert guide how the Malay Sultanate, Portuguese, Dutch and English ruled in Malacca and you'll see evidence of their history in the picturesque buildings and narrow streets.

First you'll visit Dutch Square (Stadthuys) to see the striking red 17th-century buildings that were once the offices of the Dutch governors. Then, take a short walk up St Paul's Hill for a panoramic view of Malacca, the Malacca Strait and the old town center called Bandar Hilir. You'll see the ruins of St Paul's Church and note the intricately decorated 17th century Dutch tombstones that line the interior.

After taking in the views from St Paul’s Hill, stop into a local restaurant where you will savor a typical Nyonya lunch. When you’re refreshed, you'll follow your guide to Jonker Street, also known as Antique Street, where you can browse through a plethora of antiques and clothing shops.

Then visit the A'Famosa fortress, built by the Portuguese in the 1500s and among the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia, of which only the Porta de Santiago survives. Your guide will make a final stop at Cheng Hoon Teng, the oldest traditional Chinese temple in Malaysia.

If time permits on your return, your coach will make a photo stop at Morten Village for a glimpse of a typical Malay village. Your Malacca day tour from Kuala Lumpur ends with drop-off at your hotel.

The guide provided the history of the area but little enthusiasm. Really just a driver. The tour should leave earlier to avoud peak hour traffic.Lunch was terrible, just generic sweet and sour chinese food. We all wanted local authentic! Everything before lunch waste of time. 1hour in the old area.

Great day trip to Malacca. Comfortable van, good driver and tour guide. You see all the key sights and have an amazing local lunch during your visit.

Would not pick me up at the hotel I had on my voucher. Hilton KL. Had to take a taxi on a different tour I took with the same group a day earlier. Decided not worth the effort of getting another taxi for this tour in rush hour traffic. Just didn't go. Wrote the cost off as a learning experience.

Overall reasonably satisfied However was tardy we wre asked to be ready and down in the lobby at 0830 hours sharp, and we were down 10 minutes before the time, but the driver arrived late by 50 minutes and not a word of apology. And we were the first that he picked up!_br/_ The trip in Malacca was rushed and we were not given to ourselves even a moment. We had to trot along with the guide . Barely had a minute to buy some water.

excellent trip, informative driver, I would recommend at least a night stay in Malacca to savor the place, however the day trip is really good for travelers who want to explore Malacca and are short on time. My recommendation would be that for lunch go to a local food place rather than a Chinese restaurant-which is part of the pacakage, please ask the driver- who would be more than willing to supply you with the information -

We were disappointed in this trip. It took a long time to drive to Malacca and were saw only a few of the sights when we got there. One museum they took us to we had to pay extra to see and if we didn't we were told to wait outside the building for the others. Those who couldn't afford it this should have been clearly stated prior to the trip had to stand in the sun very hot! as the staff of the museum inside the air conditioned waiting room said we are not a holding place and ushered us out. Also Jonkers st is worth a look at and we were not taken there at all. We were walked past three temples and were told that they were not open. I felt this trip was a lot of money spent on very little.

Everything was very good, our guide Heme offered excellent explanations and made the tour enjoyable. the only thing that was not to our liking was the food, I think they should give more options since they all made our stomach upset, making the trip not so pleasant. Please, more attention to that.

The tour guide was energetic and lovely, he made an effort to engage with the historical and cultural elements of Maleka so I would recommend this tour based on the tour guide alone. The restaurant serving lunch left a lot to be desired, however. It felt rushed and options were poorly explained and they seemed happy to see us gone. The pick-up communication on behalf of the company cannot be faulted. One word of advice is if you want to enter the religious sites catholic church in particular please be sure to wear appropriate clothing e.g. no shorts, singlets, thongs etc. Overall, very happy to have chosen this tour.

The tour was excellent -- an enjoyable bus ride with great narration, a wonderful lunch at what certainly felt like an authentic restaurant, and interesting sites. The latter were a bit crowded and confusing, and I wish the guide who was otherwise great had given more specific directions about the meeting point -- my friend and I were searching for the bus a long time and nearly got stranded. But that was the only real down side of the day trip.

The tour was good for the time we have there but better prefer to go and stay there at least one night. Town is very charming and you need to take the time and walk also in the afternoon and evening there. More than that I have chosen this tour rather than the cheaper one by another agency. The fact is that this has nothing to do. You can book for any agency but at the end you end up with one and the same as they cannot serve each traveler separately. For all of our tours we were thinking of having booked with different agencies. Finally all travelers were picked up by their hotels and gathered in the touristic office. There we were split to different buses based on the destination and all of the times we were served by tour51 even though none of our bookings were with this agency. So my proposal is choose the cheapest and just be lucky to have a good guide!

Hotel pick-up was on time but it was a very long day due to some fellow travellers choosing to return late to the bus. Perhaps the guide should have been more strict as has happened on other tours. It was an interesting tour with an affable guide but his English was very difficult to understand much of the time. The Dutch part of historical Malacca was very crowded with tourists and tacky tuktuks. Other parts of the town were more interesting with temples, etc. Lunch was fine.

Was a good tour, wish we could've seen more of Malacca although it was a hot day with a lot of traffic in the city so I don't think our other tour patrons were that keen on getting out and about to walk around.

Ideal of you would like to spend 11 hours on a trip. leaving the hotel at. 845 returning at 1945 five and half hour in a small mini bus for four hours at a fairly disappointing location. A historical site surrounded by new development and subsumed by recalibration. Little to see and certainly not worth the five hours travel._br/_ Timing is also an issue arriving back into KL at peak traffic is a no no. The bus is small and if you are unlucky enough to be on the wrong side you can expect to be very warm from the direct sun going and coming back._br/_ The guide was just OK but there is little to say or at least there was little of interest

I was quite disappointed with this tour to be honest. There was a large group of people on the tour a full coach load, which was too big a group as we were constantly having to wait for people really annoying as so much time was wasted waiting when I could have been enjoying the sights. The walk around Mallaca city centre was rushed, and little explanation on what we were seeing was offered by the guide. Lunch was very nice, but we were told a drink was included, which it apparently wasnt, because everyone had to pay for their drink at the end of the meal. The places we went to after lunch were literally just a photo stop. As in, the coach stopped, those who wanted to take a photo could get off and do so in the couple of minutes we were there, and then we drove on to next place. No time to actually look around and, again, no commentary provided. Malacca itself is beautiful, and it was a lovely day out in the sense of getting out of KL for the day and walking around somewhere different. But the tour aspect was very underwhelming and the guide not helpful at all.

We enjoyed spending a day in another place Malacca while holidaying in Kuala Lumpur. We got picked up from our Hotel, had a pleasant guide, got driven in a bus to discover a new place, met new people and were given lunch as well as an opportunity to shop! What more could you want!_br/_ Unfortunately, I do not recommend this tour._br/_ The bus arrived 20 mins later than specified. The guide did speak english, but with an indian accent so lots of things were lost in trying to understand what was being said. We did not get commentary while walking to some significant places, just pointed out that we could go here and there if we wanted. We walked up the hill but again not given any information as to the history of the building. It was quite a brief tour of what should have been a more interesting place._br/_ Lunch was ok. The food was not hot and the staff were not friendly, not unfriendly but just not warm or welcoming. Then we were taken to the port, which really had nothing much there except to see the island that is being built. _br/_ Our last stop was Jonkers street. Not enough commentary about the history of this street, just a quick walk up the road, pointed out where a chinese temple might be and then meet back at the bus in 25 mins!_br/_ This city was recommended to us by my brother in law and because we love history we were looking forward to going, but unfortunately there was no substance to the tour itself and I hope that Viator will look at having guides that are passionate about their country and are eager to show you interesting sights._br/_ Thankfully, we always see positive and enjoyed the day out and while our guide was pleasant, not really the kind of guiding that we have experienced in many cities around the world.

As all of the reviews say...it is a shame the trip didn't leave KL sooner as it is very rushed. It would be so much better to have quality time at Malacca and a wonder around to soak up all the amazing sights there. The lunch as everyone comments is a standard Chinese meal - however, the worst thing for me was discovering the huge variety of prices that people had paid for this trip. I paid 67 on line - where as someone else I spoke to paid only 37. We had exactly the same trip! I thought this was pretty unfair, and whilst I was completely prepared for the rest of it having read everyone's reviews in advance I really thought that this was rubbish. Moral of the story is - pay the least amount possible for this visit, you all get picked up from your hotels and dropped in the same place and have the same tour!

This was a shared tour involving 15 passengers including 3 of us, all from different hotels. Naturally there was no fixed time adherence by every one. The pick up time given to us was 8:30 in the morning and they picked us up at 9:15 a.m. and there was no sorry uttered by the staff / guide who was very rude and we don't know what was urgency with him? It was a really treacherous experience which lasted for 8 hours. Lunch was Chinese and not a great one.

Perhaps I have used Viator in other countires where the level was different so maybe I was a bit dissapointed with how things were organized. _br/_ -The pick-up from hotel was supposed to be 8.30 , and then I got a text that it will be between 8.45 to 9 am , but the actual pickup was around 9.30. If we were informed earlier we could have spent that time doing something else. _br/_ - Didnt find the tour itself very great ..most places were closed because of Sundays and some places saw from within the bus. _br/_ - This is nobody's fault ..but it took 4 Hrs to get back to KL due to traffic jam . So around a total 6 hours of travel. _br/_ - Didn't find the place also very attractive.

I enjoyed seeing the Colonial Buildings and temples in Malakka. Perhaps the guide could have made us feel a little more welcome and been a bit more enthusiastic with the commentary._br/_ The food at lunch was good and the restaurant itself was ok - the service in the restaurant was not to the same standard._br/_ Meeting fellow travellers from a range of countries was the best aspect of the tour.

Such a wonderful tour, wish I could have stayed in Malacca! Excellent service from the two Goonas Guide and Driver visiting this memorable historic town. The contents of the tour meant there was something interesting to satisfy all tastes, including the excellent Chinese lunch. The 2-hour drive each way was long but well-worth the effort. I would recommend this tour to anyone!

Picked up from hotel at 9am taken to a car park 10 mins away and left there until 10 am when coach arrived, got to Malacca spent 10 mins at a church and 10 mins at a temple, had a decent lunch and then taken to Malacca centre, had a wander round and then the guide lost 10 of the party so we ended up sitting on steps for 25 mins not allowed to explore, had a run down Jonker street 20 mins at a temple and a further 20 mins standing on a street corner. Then back to KL and after 2 1/2 drive arrived back in KL in time for rush hour and a further hour on the coach. Never got to see Malacca properly or do any shopping but had a lovely sit on some steps. Would not recommend this.

Booking with Viator months before arriving in KL was a major mistake. I paid 2X, plus more for the cost of this tour. The other tourists on the bus booked locally and paid far far less than what I paid. It took 3 hours to reach Malacca and then 2.5 coming back. The amount of time spent in transportation far exceeded the amount of time we had in Malacca. We were guided by the tour guide to the key sites to see but were given NO free time. A few of us wanted to stop for a coffee and we had to order... take away. We were not allowed to finish the coffee on the bus and had to stand outside the bus to finish the coffee. Come on??? Seriously? I am a seasoned traveller and this tour was one of the most belaboured I've ever been on. The guide was fine. No concerns with him. It's just all on the tour bus wanted at least a bit of free time and were give zero minutes. We could not even buy a souvenir. I paid far more than the locals and that alone was outrageous. Book locally and save money. I'd recommend take the bus down to Malacca and spend a night there to explore the city on your own the return to KL. A mistake I made booking with Viator!!! Live and learn right?

I did enjoy this day trip but this city has become a hot tourist spot and the crowds have become very pushy and inconsiderate. Would not go back. It was a very hot day and the itinerary had stated bottled water would be provided so I did not bring any but when I asked the driver about getting a bottle he told me where to buy some. The seats on the van were not comfortable, they were old a wore out.

Well , at least the included lunch was excellent ! The rest of the tour was somewhat of a disappointment . Our lady tour guide seemed merely to be ''going through the motions'' , and did little to induce enthusiasm or provoke interest within our group of ten . The long drives along motorways were extremely tedious , and offered no opportunity to see anything of the ''real' ' Malaysia other than through the advertising hoardings that lined the way / Yes , parts of historical Malacca are indeed potentially interesting , but it takes an age to get there ,,,,, and even longer to get back , since arrival back to KL unfortunately coincides with the horrendous evening traffic jams . Sadly , it seems a long way to go merely to enjoy an good lunch , and see a few old buildings !

Pick up experience it horrible and unorganized. The guide would not address his comments and descriptions of the sights to the whole group. Malacca is wonderful, just not with this tour group, if you really want to see and learn.

To begin the process of picking up guests at different hotels from the time I got on the bus and others were already there took 45-60 minutes. And the guy picking us up did not even greet us, once we were identified he headed off to the bus and herded us on. We were then dropped off at a central location and boarded another bus for our tour. Our tour guide Guna does not speak the English language very well - I could not understand much of what he said English is my primary language. I spoke to a Japanese guest who also could not understand Guna. Several times during stops I went up to Guna to ask him what we were seeing for if he had told us earlier I had no idea what he said. One on one I was able to understand him but we had a large bus full of people. And when he spoke to us as a group when we were out of the bus he was still difficult to understand._br/_ It was a long commute both ways. Once we returned to Kuala Lumpur it took longer than an hour before I was returned to my hotel - and there were still others to be dropped off at their hotels._br/_ The sites we saw were interesting but I would not want to use this tour company again. The other two tours I took with a differ company were a pleasure, but not this one.

This tour was quite good overall. The pick up was late - I was outside my hotel at 8.30 and not picked up until 9.10. No apology from the driver and no advice in advance that in fact we weren't going all the way to Malacca in his small van but being ferried to the big airconditioned bus at the meeting place. Long delay before we got on the road. The key thing you should know is that Malacca Melaka is extremely hot. You must take a hat or an umbrella and sunscreen is advisable. Also the hoped-for Malayan lunch turned out to be Chinese food of the kind you can get anywhere. The tour guide's English was difficult to understand and I could see other people on the tour for whom English wasn't their first language were struggling to comprehend. However what he lacked in clarity he made up for in enthusiasm. The trip back took over 3 hours there is no real indication on the tour site as to when you can anticipate being back in KL. My advice would be to take a private tour, leave KL very early and come back early to avoid the afternoon heat.

I would not recommend visiting Melaka as a day trip from KL. With hanging around waiting for pickup and swapping buses it was a 12hour day with barely 3hours in Melaka._br/_ The lunch was tasty but service was slow._br/_ The tour guide was knowledgeable but seemed frustrated by the size of the group.

The tour guide was kind and knowledgable, but the tour was too short in the city. The convenience was the bus to Malacca, but I feel like I just paid 80 dollars for the bus ride. The tour inside the city was too short and I feel like I could have learned much more.

Difficult one this. Trip was 8 hours overall, 2 hours either way, couple of hours walking and then two hours for lunch and explore. All ok, but felt time could have been managed better. What it suggests is probably an overnight stay would have been better choice. The guide was knowledgeable, friendly but terrible driver.

I am very surprised at how high this tour is rated. The tour start with a very uncomfortable van picking you up at your hotel and shuttling you to a meeting point where you switch to a tour bus which then brings you to another meeting point to switch to another tour bus so that you have wasted an hour before you even leave KL. The you are on a bus for about 2 hours to Melak where the first stop is a small Buddha temple not worth seeing and a reference to a large cemetery that you do not see much of from the road and you do not enter. Then a brief stop in a parking lot by the ocean that is supposedly a fishing village but there is no interesting scenery.

We took this tour on 11/12 with a local contractor for Viator, only 3 of us on this tour that day so it was like we got a personal tour, Tour Guide was a nice Indian gentle man, again forgot his name, he is polite and very tentative to our needs, Malacca is a beautiful and unique town, traditional lunch was so so, but that restaurant was crowded so I it is popular, reason I deducted 1 star is condition of the vehicle, it is not too old but noisy and vibrate a lot being a diesel with a bad suspension system, other than that good experience in Malacca. According to the tour guide you should spend at least a night there to enjoy the night market and street food @ jonker st. and prepare to walk A LOT in day time to explore the town.

We waited a long time for the pick up because there was a miscommunication between the agency we booked the tour with and the actual tour operator. But it all worked out very well because, my group of three ended up in our own van with a driver/guide Thomas who was very good. The lunch was also very good.
