London Afternoon Tea at Grosvenor House

London, United Kingdom

Combine old-school English glamor with delicious cakes, sandwiches and tea on this must-do afternoon tea experience in London! Choose between one of two different types of afternoon tea – one with Champagne or one with just tea – both taking place at London’s 5-star Grosvenor House Hotel.

Afternoon tea in London is an institution, owing its origins to Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford – one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting. As an elite member of Victorian society, she was accustomed to eating large breakfasts, small lunches and large dinners -- the latter served very late each night. To satisfy her afternoon hunger pangs, she summoned her servants to bring tea and cakes.

So delightful was the experience that it became a daily meal and the trend caught on – all over London.
Still going strong today, afternoon teas are served all over the capital, with the most prestigious ones taking place in top hotels -- like the 5-star Grosvenor House Hotel where your afternoon tea experience takes place. Simply choose from one of the following options and relax in an atmosphere of genteel refinement:

Traditional Afternoon Tea:

Enjoy a traditional light afternoon tea, served in style in the Grosvenor House’s library. Taking place between 3pm and 6pm, the light feast includes a pot of classic English tea, traditional (crust-removed) sandwiches, pastries, and scones with clotted cream and fruit preserves.

Anna’s Champagne Afternoon Tea:

Sit down in Grosvenor House’s Park Room, which overlooks Hyde Park, and relax to elegant music from the resident pianist. Created as a testament to Duchess Anna’s legacy, this luxury afternoon tea comprises dainty finger sandwiches, buttermilk scones, cream puffs and pastries -- all served with your choice of fine English tea and a glass of all-important Champagne.

Everything I thought afternoon tea would be! I wish I could remember our servers name, but she was wonderful. She catered to me because I have limited hearing so she would lean over to me to make sure I heard what she was saying. Such a lovely young woman! Many of the fictional books I read as a younger woman always had Grosvenor House, Hyde Park, Covent Gardens and Bath in them so how delightful to get to visit these places I had read about. Treat yourself to afternoon tea in this lovely old hotel!

We had stayed at the Grosvenor House before hand thought this would be a nice opportunity to visit it again. The service staff were excellent if a bit slow by American standards. The atmosphere was lovely and the food was ok, a little dry enough for two people._br/_ My only complaint was the chair I was in was very uncomfortable. Apparently the lady at a table next to mine thought so too, because she swapped with her husband.

We stayed at the JW Grosvenor Hotel but booked with you. This was truly a wonderful experience. LOTS of food, no need for dinner as we planned it at 5pm. AWESOME!

We had a blast with our afternoon tea. My husband really enjoyed it and we felt quite pampered. We do not like seafood so the wonderful staff were quite accommodating with other options. It was a nice break from the hustle bustle of our adventures. This was a real treat and we are glad we tried it.

I had tea with a friend at Grosvenor House in the beautiful surroundings overlooking Park Lane and the Park beyond. The scones and pastries were exquisite and the sandwiches very tasty. Plenty on offer as well, as we were offered more sandwiches, more scones, more tea and rolled out of there very satisfied. The service is impeccable and it is a beautiful room in which to enjoy the pleasures of life alongside a good gossip with a friend.

Afternoon tea with my 10 year old granddaughter was absolutely the best! From the minute we stepped out of the taxi, we were greeted by a most courteous and professional staff member. The atmosphere was exactly what I would have expected. The food was delightful service exceptional and I would certainly put this on my agenda for the next trip to London.

I was not impressed, quantities of sandwiches was more than adequate, although the selection was limited. Only one glass of Champagne , I would rather have ordered from the menu. Servers were friendly, decor was outstanding. I would highly recommend this to someone who is pretentious.

The tea was nice. The service was nice. The food was nice. 3 hours later, my wife and I both got explosive diarrhea. The only thing that we both ate that was at the tea. Not sure what was bad but we both barely made it back to our hotel without dire consequences.

....Ok if you are coming across the pond from the US it is important to stay awake when you arrive for as long as you can and as close to a normal bedtime .. example 10P .... to help to accomplish this goal make a reservation after checking into your hotel foe high tea.... If you do that I totally recommend Grosvenor House for the traditional high tea.... the wait staff was fantastic, they know our name when we arrived and gave us several options for seating. The food and and tea instruction for the non-Brit was helpful and the quality of food and teas was fantastic. Highly recommend!

Delish, I left stuffed because we kept getting fed! You can try more than one tea as well. The service was top-notch, as Grosvenor House is a premier hotel in the city. I will do this again the next time I'm in London.

I would highly recommend this afternoon tea. I am Gluten Free and Allergic to eggs and I had a three tiered cake stand filled with everything to cater for my dietary needs. My husband had his own selection and everything was delicious. The piano player gave it a nice relaxing feeling.

I will come back to this wonderful place every time I am in London. I love doing High teas, the importance of variety, multiple but uncomplicated choices and being able to just relax and be spoilt in very comfortable surroundings is the reason I rate the High tea at Grosvenor House as one of the very best._br/_ The service here is exceptional, all the staff are brilliant under the fine leadership of the very charming Emmanuel, they all took care of our High Tea needs and there was a vast and varied selection. The teas where Superb, the champagne flowed and was sublime, and we were able to talk, chat, catch up, laugh and have fun whilst being taken care of by efficient non intrusive guest service staff, which meant wehad a superb time, relaxing and very comfortable.

Wonderful place for tea - especially first timers! I was originally reserved for a table in the far back corner of the tea room, but the hostess was nice enough to move to a table in front of the window for a better view. Staff was very helpful, and the experience! Worth having a visit!

Absolutely Wonderful! Great Location and staff was superbly 'afternoon tea' oriented! Expect to feel very special while not feeling like you are in a show. It isa true afternoon tea at a very - very elegant location. They also gave us a gift while leaving - another piece of cake - of our choice - for later! Will be remembered. Went to several afternoon teas while in London - this was by fay the most elegant.

An absolutely delightful experience of the English Afternoon Tea! We had such a wonderful time sipping on our favorite tea and champagne while enjoying an abundance of freshly prepared tea sandwiches, pastries, little cakes, fruit crèmes and tiny tarts, sumptuous scones and more. All while enjoying light piano playing in a soothing away from it all atmosphere and decor. The Park Room simply rocks!

My husband and I just enjoyed our first proper English tea at the Park Room in the Grosvenor House. Words cannot adequately describe how much we enjoyed ourselves - every aspect of our tea was perfect. For starters, the room is beautiful and elegant, the live piano music was great, and the service is fantastic. Roxana took wonderful care of us - she was so sweet, attentive and considerate. The finger sandwiches were very good, the pastries were delicious, and the scones were nothing like the dry, gross rocks we get at home in NYC!! And as an extra treat, we were given a choice of cake to take back with us to our hotel!

This afternoon tea is way over priced. I booked it before I went to London. Upon arriving, all the nice hotels have afternoon tea and for much less. I was by myself and did not get the service as the tables did around me. I don't know if that was because I prepaid or just a single gal. _br/_ The food was ordinary. Nothing special about this at all. I saw prices for half the price all over London and in very nice places. Live and Learn!!!

Was a really lovely afternoon. Just an oasis. No rush, wonderful service. We had expected to be trapped in a group situation and we were thrilled that it was private. Book this on an afternoon when you just want to sit, relax and have a good chat.

We arrived in London on Sunday evening and the only thing we had on our itinerary for Monday was our High Tea. It was wonderful to have a four hour window to arrive as we were never stressed about missing our time. The fruit, the sandwiches, the tea cakes, the tea, the service ... all totally amazing. And we took our dessert cake home with us -- all packed up in a nice box. Best idea ever.
