London East End Food Tour

London, United Kingdom

Get to know the East End’s burgeoning food scene and its fascinating history on a 3.5-hour London walking tour. With a friendly local guide, explore the eclectic neighborhoods of Shoreditch and Spitalfields and discover the places where in-the-know Londoners choose to eat. Wolf down a bacon sandwich at the award-winning St John Bread and Wine restaurant, discover the legendary salt-beef bagels of Beigel Bake and sample artisan British cheese. Traditional fish and chips at Poppies are also included, as are curry samples on Brick Lane and more!

After meeting your guide near Spitalfields, set off on your stroll around the area to learn about east London’s food scene and culinary heritage. Culturally diverse, with London’s largest immigrant population, the east London area has its own distinct cuisine influenced by the different nationalities who live there. Sample a total of ten popular local dishes as you explore; highlights are as described below.

Start with a traditional British breakfast staple – the humble bacon sandwich – at St John Bread and Wine, a meat-specialist restaurant that’s become a local institution. Then, step back in time with a visit to the English Restaurant to sample its legendary bread pudding.

Wander over to Androuet, one of London’s top cheese producers, to sample artisan British cheeses, and then enjoy a leisurely amble north to Poppies – a proper East End chippy— for a portion of fish and chips, wrapped in newspaper.

Head back toward Spitalfields and stroll down Brick Lane, Britain's undisputed curry capital that's home to Indian food shops and curry restaurants galore. Head inside Aladin, your guide’s favorite eatery, and sample Bangladeshi and Indian specialties while learning how curry has become Britain’s national dish. Then, wander into the heart of the East End’s Shoreditch to visit Beigel Bake, one of the most famous bagel shops this side of the Atlantic. Chow down on one of their salted beef bagels, and you’ll quickly realize how they made it onto Time Out London’s ‘100 Best Dishes in London’ list.

Your final visit is to another historical English restaurant where you'll try a salted caramel tart to finish on a sweet-tasting high note! Your tour then finishes in the heart of Shoreditch, near Pizza East.

This was one of the greatest tours we've ever taken. Our guide, Emily Rose, was really great. She was fun and very interesting. All of our group kept raving about our experience with her. We wished she could join us for the rest of our trip. That is how much we enjoyed her great personality. We easily felt her part of our family trip!!

Not to be missed. We had a great guide Prya who was such a bubbly person full of knowledge that really made the tour of the food area brilliant. From the curries in Bangli Town to deserts it was a treat to behold. As well as the great food to also get all the history of the place was a jewel in the crown.

Our guide, Bethany, was a delight! We had done a food tour on another continent as recommenced by Viator, and they were both excellent. You'll learn about the city as you walk from restaurant to restaurant. Rather that being just 100 about food, you also get some great background on the area. Did I mention Bethany was great?

I went on this tour along with 7 other people. We were met by Harry our tour guide, who was full of enthusiasm and very knowledgable about the foods, eateries and the history of the area we walked around. We had so much food I ended up taking doggy bags home from the last 2 stops. The foods were delicious, my personal favourite being the bread and butter pudding and custard. We visited a variety of eateries- shops, restaurants, pubs and were on the tour for about 4 hours in total- so definitely didn't feel short changed by Harry at all. One of the group was Jewish and so Harry organised an alternative choice for her at the bacon sandwich stop, which she was pleased with too. All in all a highly recommended tour, especially with Harry at the helm.

The London food tour hosted by Emily was the most pleasant surprise of my entire trip. Great food, interesting history and architecture and lots of culture. Spitalfields and Shoreditch are hip neighborhoods with lots of pride in their blend of cultures and heritage. We experienced a great variety of food...was it ten stops?....of the best quality. It was exactly the right amount of time, food, and walking. Highly recommend this tour.

I am so glad this was my first trip, as it was fabulous! The guide, Harry was quite accommodating, distinctly knowledgeable about both the food and the history of the area. As a teacher I admired his ability to integrate History ias we sampled selections from 10 establishments. HARRY was fantastic!

If you're a foodie this tour is GREAT! Loved every stop and got to try lots of great British food sadly most of it bland til you season it yourself. Our guide was a lot of fun as was our entire group. There was a large variety from a traditional British pub LOVED the cider hated the beer...but then again I hate all beer.. to a variety of curry's on Curry Row - traditional fish n chips w/ mushy peas fabulous once you add some salt and I'm not a salt addict by any means.

This was one of the best experience in London. Our guide, Bethany brought to many places with interesting stories and great food. The amount of food was more than enough so I had to skip my meals until evening and started to miss the food from next morning. It was also great that they gave us printed information of the restaurants so that I could visit the place again:

Definitely worth it. Don't have breakfast on the day, that was my mistake. The amount of food you eat in the 3 hr tour will fill you up so much you have to get it take away. Lots of walking to burn it off and history/stories to hear.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this food tour. Madi was our guide and she did a great job of both providing history commentary of the East End, as well as of the establishments that we hit. The food was appropriately proportioned for the tour and each site was ready for us. Spitalfields is such an interesting area...be sure to check out the market there.

This was a brilliant few hours spent sampling different foods and learning a little about the history of Spitalfields and the surrounding area. Our guide, Madi, was really good and even though we were a group of 13 we were never made to feel rushed at any point. We visited a number of places which we would never have known about if we had not had a guide to take us there the whole morning was very relaxed and the food was amazing. Would recommend this to anyone interested in food, history or architecture - or just wanting an excuse to eat a variety of foods while taking a gentle stroll around London.

Harry was the best!! So much passion and enthusiasm for what we saw--he made the tour for us! Got plenty of historical background on the East End and got to sample all the things that are London. Really really enjoyed our guide--very funny and informational and his complete conviction in everything he presented was the topper! This is the best bacon sandwich you will ever put in your mouth anywhere ever!

Harry was a terrific guide - funny, knowledgeable, and really knew the neighborhood well. It seemed like everyone knew him and gave him a hug. Understandable because he's a huggable kind of guy! The food was incredible, and we found restaurants we never knew existed. Portions are small enough to enjoy, yet large enough to get a good taste of each dish. We stayed around the neighborhood long after the tour ended to enjoy the vibrancy of the area. Such a great way to experience a city. And Harry made all the difference in our experience of the area.
