Small-Group Day Trip to Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor from London

London, United Kingdom

This small-group tour from London is your chance to travel through British history, from Romans to royals, in one day! Visit the mysterious prehistoric site of Stonehenge, discover the Roman and Georgian influences of Bath and see the oldest occupied castle in the world in Windsor. This full-day trip allows you to experience the very best of England's heritage.

Start your tour from London with a scenic drive to the ancient kingdom of Wessex and a visit to the world-famous site of Stonehenge. With a history spanning 5,000 years, this stone circle has been shrouded in mystery and myth since before the written word. Your guide will explain what is known and what may never be known about these giant stones set on Salisbury Plain. Absorb the powerful vibe of this ancient site and load up your camera with photos before continuing your journey through the beautiful counties of Wiltshire and Somerset, passing thatched-roof cottages and idyllic villages.

Arrive in the elegant city of Bath, where both Romans and Georgians have left their mark. Formerly known as Aquae Sulis, Bath is home to the only hot thermal springs in Britain, which were a draw for early Roman invaders. At the Roman Baths, discover how centuries later, the baths were still a destination for those who wanted to ‘take to the waters.’ The Georgian elite of London arrived here in the 18th century to cure themselves of rheumatic disease and gout. The city’s elegant squares, circuses and crescents also date from this time. Enjoy a guided tour of the city, and then enjoy lunch (own expense) at a local eatery.

After lunch, continue your day trip to Windsor, home to the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and the favorite home of Queen Elizabeth II. Your guide will give you a full account of the history of this royal residence and take you on a walk through the town where royalty and statesmen have walked.

Inside the castle (entrance at your own expense), see the fine furniture and paintings owned by the queen. Take a look at Queen Mary's Dolls’ House and visit St George's chapel to see the resting place of English kings and queens, including Henry VIII and Charles I.

At the end of the day, meet the rest of your group to head back to London through historic Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was sealed by King John in 1215.

Please note: Between November 1 and February 28, this tour itinerary will run in reverse.

This was a great day but given that it was winter time we lost the light early. I would recommend going to Bath on a separate visit at this time of year. Our guide and driver were both wonderful.

Amazing trip! Highly recommend! Our tour guide, Tony, was fantastic. He was very informative and funny at the same time. What a wonder to get to Stonehenge and explore. My sister and I both loved the tour of Bath. I only wish we could have stayed longer. I really would like to return there someday to explore more. The baths were extremely interesting and I took lots of pictures. We ended with a tour of the town of Windsor and walked around Windsor Castle which is very large and long. We got to get up close to the gate where the Queen and Prince Phillip reside and they happened to be home that day. All in all, it was a magical day that I will never forget.

Great way to pack a lot into one day. Entry to Windsor Castle isn't included, but besides that everything was handled. Our tour guide was excellent, very friendly and knowledgeable.

Tour pickup was 45 minutes late on an already tight schedule. No one called or was sent to notify us. Waited an additional 45 minutes in Bath when a couple didn't return. We eventually left them in Bath. Running so late at this point that St. George's Chapel in Windsor was closed when we arrived. Amazingly disorganized. International Friends in London Avoid them.

I thought the tour guy was very informative. My only complaint was that there wasn't enough time at each place. Too much time on the road. Maybe only go to two of the sites.

Well paced tour, worth the extra price for the small group to get more time at each location.

Good tour order to get into Stonehenge early in the morning and Windsor at the last one. However, 3 places in 1 day with no time for decent lunch is exhausting. The Bath city is better place to spend time than the bathroom itself but we don't have time for it

Wanted to see all three so this made for a long day. Be prepared to spend most of your time in the vehicle. Had enough time at Stonehenge, but very limited time at the other 2. No fault of the tour, just geographically tough.

Tour departed from London in a comfortable van that sits up to 14 people while there's only 11 people that day._br/_ We arrived Stonehenge about 10:00 am, not too long after they're 'opened', not too many people at the time, I was able to take pictures without people around the stones, we were given plenty of time to walk around at Stonehenge. Bath is full of tourists and buses, had to be careful crossing the streets, had beautiful buildings, but a little 'touristy'. Time there was short, less than 2 hours to visit Bath and have lunch and sightseeing. For Windsor Castle, keep in mind the entrance fee is not included in the tour, had to purchase on site, highly recommend to enter Castle for visit. Bus returned to London after 6:00 pm, they offered a few 'drop off'' points depending where your hotel is at and given recommendation on how to return to your hotel, either by taxi, Underground depending on the distance. Overall it's a great tour that combined 3 different places in 1 day.

Fantastic day trip, plenty of time to enjoy each place. Our tour guide Ben was highly entertaining, and full of history about each place. Coach was very comfortable.

So disappointing! The guide was grumpy and left a decidedly sour impression as I could not leave the tour fast enough!

It's simply too much for a one day tour. It was raining when we arrived at Stonehenge and it greatly impacted our experience there. With the rain..it took longer to see the site and enjoy it. Let us only time to make a quick bathroom stop and there was no time for the gift shop or for the indoor experience on site. We could have used 2 more hours there easy. Bath was neat to see, however, our guide was not able to get us in right away. So we stood in the rain and watch line after line of people go in before us, including people not in a tour that just continued to walk up after we were in line. Again, we have to move quickly through the ruins as we lost time just waiting in line. Could have enjoyed the afternoon there enjoying the town. Instead, we had to grab a sandwich to go to eat on the bus. In Windsor, we chose not to go into the Castle because again, there wasn't enough time. Instead chose to walk around town and do some shopping. Or tour guide was ok but he fell asleep several times on the bus instead of being engaged with the group and he didn't hold people accountable for being on time. We had repeat offenders at every stop who were always late and he never addressed it so that also added to us not having enough time in each location. Two stops would have been ideal...cramming in 3 was just too many too feel like you experienced each place.

The weather was the major problem for this tour the day we went. Also beware you can no longer get close to the Stonehenge site. No more touching of the stones._br/_ Bath was very interesting as was Windsor Castle. Your time in both places is very limited.

Driver superb and guide competent but disengaged. 12 hour day with 2/3 spent in small uncomfortable van. No facilities and no planned bathroom breaks. Most of us needed them. Stonehenge mystical. Bath a tourist trap with no time for a proper meal and no suggestions, but for ice cream, from guide. Windsor magnificent but rushed through at end of day. We broke off from main group and enjoyed a nice tea and pastry. This is not a good tour for adults over 50. Not recommended

Great tour and great tour guide and driver. Perhaps it's a bit too ambitious to do all 3 in one day and during holidays Windsor was so crowded that we couldn't even get in to see the castle, we spent most of our time on line. It merits more time, as does Bath. Stonehenge was amazing and just the right amount of time.

We booked our tour online several weeks before our trip. When we arrived, early, to our meeting place, there was no one there. After spending close to 30 minutes trying to reach someone, we were informed we were not listed for that day's tour, despite our confirmation number and several emails regarding the tour. My family ended up taking a cab to the Waterloo station to catch a train to Windsor, where we met up with the tour guide. While the tour from there was enjoyable, we missed the Windsor segment of the day. Although we were reimbursed for the cab ride and train fare to catch up to the day tour, no one has yet contacted us to explain why we were left off the tour manifest for that day, or offer any type of consideration for our troubles.

Our guide, Tony, was funny and engaging. He did a great job at keeping us on schedule, while at the same time keeping us on schedule. We had enough time to get a good view of everything, but if you're looking for an in-depth, leisurely experience in the country, this is not for you. The amount of time you have in each place is enough to feel like you've seen them, but we missed small things due to time constraints. Overall, though, it was a great way to catch some sights out of the city, without having to go through all the hassle of planning it ourselves.

Some says this is too packed a day and could have spent longer hours in Windsor, but I just had enough time to appreciate Stonehenge, a good meal in Bath, and walked about and got amazed inside the Castle. But I am of a younger crowd and yes, older people would have struggled to go through the Castle that swiftly. It was quite a long day but I still managed to get on my 8PM train back to the North.

Traveling Europe with a large family, including a wheelchair bound child is a daunting task. I was skeptical about an ambitious day traveling to Stonehenge, Bath, and Windsor, but my wife insisted. My wife was right as usual the day was fantastic. Chris Tour guide and Sid Coach Driver were spot on. They were professional and knew a great deal about the areas we were touring. For a good outing from London for the day. This is a great tour, and you would count yourself lucky to have Chris and Sid as your guides. Please keep in mind the only reason this worked as an wheelchair accessible trip is because our daughter is so small and can be carried, larger children or adults would need to make special arraignments An accessible bus or van. Have fun!

Tour was great and our guide, Tony, was fantastic. Got to Stonehenge early and beat the rush, had a nice stop in Bath where we had lunch, then spent a few hours touring Windsor Castle before being dropped back off in London.

I and #39;d give it a 4 1/2 star review, but I and #39;m rounding up. Tony, our tour guide was great. He was very knowledgable, funny, and had a great personality. The only thing was he could have been more clear about the departure times. We had to call the travel agency to double check. Thanks Tony. Great tour!!

Blessed with a beautiful day. Tony, our guide was extremely well informed with quite an entertaining sense of humor. The only thing I would change if I were to take another tour with Viator is to verify that the pick up location was the same as the drop off location.

We were extremely disappointed in our experience. First, due to traffic problems, we arrived literally 5 minutes late at the pickup location. Not only did the tour leave without us, but the operator refused to even meet us at a location along the way. Since I did not want to disappoint my 10 year old daughter, we ended up paying 225 pounds for a private car to meet the group at Stonehenge. Once with the group, we found the tour guide to be mostly disinterested and provided little insight or direction at each location. His foremost concern was departure time as he consistently threatened to leave behind those who did not get back to the bus on time. While I understand the need for punctuality on these tours, the approach was rather nasty and heavy handed. As for the tour itself, Bath and Windsor were extremely rushed. The tour overview suggests that there would be time for lunch in Bath, but we were told to grab a sandwich after touring the baths so we could eat on the bus. Ironically, we arrived back in London at 530 so our 11 hour tour was, in actuality, 10 hours. I have no doubt this was due to our guides eagerness to just get it over with. What an incrediblle disappointment considering the cost of this excursion.

It was a very nice trip. Our driver was wonderful. But I was a little disappointed in Bath. It was not at all what I had expected. It was very commercial and geared towards shopping. For many that is perfect. But I had the feeling it was more of a quaint village. The Bath House was interesting, but also very commercial. The trip was also very rushed. I know it was a long day, but I didn't feel I had enough time to explore.

Review by:   Lawrence A,    August 2015 Review: 3 star rating: Worth doing
It is really too much to try to do Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor Castle in a single day as it allows about 70-90 minutes at each stop and we lost additional time in heavy traffic and waiting to purchase a ticket at Windsor. We left each site reluctantly wanting more time, even another 30 minutes. Even in the allotted time it was impossible to even walk quickly through the Roman Baths. So, if you simply want to see the three sites, then go on this tour. If you wan to experience the three sites plan two or three trips._br/_ Two changes would improve the experience: 1- tell the guests to pack a lunch to eat on the van as the description gives the impression that there will be time to eat and 2- leave at 7 AM rather than a little after 8 AM. LGA

Review by:   Linda D,    August 2015 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
The driver was very knowledgeable during the drive. Way too much time was spent in Stonehenge and not enough time on Windsor or Bath. We felt rushed during the tour and barely made it in time to Windsor for the tour. An hour in Bath and Windsor is not enough time and over 1-1/2 hours at Stonehenge is too much. A better tour would be just Bath and Windsor or just two out of the three.

I've read many of the other reviewed, and I agree with all, an ambitious journey to Vivek all in the allotted time. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. It was also great to see the treasures in all 3 locations, and if I have a chance again To visit each individually to spend more time, especially Windsor Castle.

Great Experience with a fantastic Guide. He really knew his stuff and that allowed the group to have a most enjoyable visit to all three places. This tour covers over 250 miles so it is quite an achievement to see all of this one day. We were efficient in our time use, but had enough time to fully enjoy the sights. Highly recommend this tour.

First, our driver, Sam, was great and timely at all of the stops._br/_ But, our tour guide, John, was not. He arrived 15 minutes after we were scheduled to leave London. All of the guests were on the bus and ready to leave on time at 7:40._br/_ Our second stop was in Bath. John told us to be back on the bus at 1:45 or we would have to find our own way back to London. All of us were back on the bus at 1:45, but no John. He finally arrived back at 2:15 with some lame excuse that he needed to buy strawberries for the group. I am sure that owner of the bus did not appreciate the strawberries that ended up on the floor._br/_ The late departure from Bath resulted in us arriving at Windsor Castle 10 minutes after the ticket office closed and no opportunity to visit the castle. We were left on our own to wander around town until 5:40- a complete waste of time._br/_ I will not be booking any tours through Viator in the foreseeable future.

The excursion was mostly a success despite a terrible tour guide. Guide was 30 minutes late to start the day. All the guests and bus driver were there and waiting on him. He excused his tardiness with blaming traffic. At this point he told us he was probably going to get fired so he proceeded to give a very colorful and non-traditional talking tour of the city as we drove through. At Bath we were instructed to be back on time or we would be left. And all the guests were back on time, but the tour guide was again 30 minutes late. He finally showed up but because of that delay we did not make it to Windsor in time for anyone to purchase tickets to enter the castle if they wanted to. We had not planned to enter the castle so that did not specifically change our plans, but it was very impactful for others in the tour. The tour guide made the day chaotic and frustrating. Thankfully I don't think anyone else will have to suffer through him because he told us that he turned in his notice while on our tour.

The tour was ok- the guide was nice, but didn't go out of the way to be helpful, it seemed rushed the entire day. I realize it's a lot to pack into one day, but it felt more rushed than necessary.

A good way to see the pertinent things from the three sites. Though a shame Windsor was so crowded with students on field trips.
