Small-Group Day Trip to Stonehenge, Glastonbury, and Winchester from London

Small-Group Day Trip to Stonehenge, Glastonbury, and Winchester from London

London, United Kingdom

If you’re fascinated by England’s mysteries, from the legends of King Arthur and the mystical island of Avalon to the ancient stone circles in the former Kingdom of Wessex, then this day trip from London to Stonehenge, Glastonbury, and Winchester was made for you! On this small-group tour, enjoy the English countryside, see some of its most legendary attractions including the Glastonbury Tor and the Chalice Well, and let a friendly guide fill you in on the folklore that surrounds these incredible sites.

On this full-day tour from London, uncover with your guide the myths and legends of King Arthur and see some of England’s most famous and curious sites. From London, head west through the beautiful countryside to what was once the ancient Kingdom of Wessex.

Stop first in Winchester and head inside the Great Hall, built between 1222 and 1235. Inside, see what many people believed to be King Arthur's original Round Table. In medieval times, the writer and author of Le Morte D'Arthur, Sir Thomas Mallory, swore by its authenticity and identified Winchester as being the site of King Arthur's Camelot.

Afterward, visit one of the most mysterious sites on Earth, that prehistoric and world-famous stone monument known as Stonehenge. The landscape is peppered with burial chambers and stone circles, each one thousands of years old and shrouded in mysteries, but Stonehenge rises above them all. Located on Salisbury Plain and keeping its 5,000 years of history quite secret, Stonehenge has been described as everything from an astronomical clock to a place of worship or burial. Your guide will explain what is known today and reveal the theories that have been debated for centuries. Ponder these theories as you walk around the stones and admire the scenic views.

Your tour continues to the small town of Glastonbury, supposed home of the mysterious isle of Avalon, the place where King Arthur’s sword was forged, according to legend. It was here, after the Battle of Camlann, that a mortally wounded King Arthur died. Stop at the famous Glastonbury Tor (a hill) and view the ruins of St Michael's church. Afterward, descend to the Chalice Well Gardens to learn of an older legend, that of the chalice that Jesus Christ used during the Last Supper. Some say the Holy Grail is buried here in Glastonbury.

Continue into town to visit Glastonbury Abbey, the site of Arthur’s and Queen Guinevere's graves, before heading to lunch in one of the local restaurants (own expense). Spend the end of your tour being guided to see the mysterious Silbury Hill, Europe's tallest prehistoric manmade mound – a fitting end to a full day of discovery.

Great guide who made sure every member of the tour group was enjoying the sights. Added an excursion to Avery after learning of our interest in the area.

All the sights in a very time-efficient manner.

The Stonehenge visit was in many ways the biggest disappointment of my trip to Great Britain. Not the place itself, but the way the visit was structured. We spent more time waiting in line for the busses to go up to the attraction and to come back that there was very little time to take in the structure itself. Glastonbury was beautiful and seeing the round table was worthwhile. I did expect, however, for the trip to involve more discussion of the Arthurian legends, since this is how the trip was promoted.

The tour guide and driver were great but we didn't get to spend much time at each thing. We almost missed the last stop. I think out of all the stops maybe not stop at the Chalice Gardens....Stonehenge was amazing and I truly enjoyed the Abbey. I just wish we had more time in Winchester. But all in all it was a great day!

We had the most amazing, comfortable guide in our entire life traveling. Oliver was extremely knowledgable as well as flexible as to the groups desires. We had scheduled another event immediately after and to be sure we arrived, he walked us to the venue! International Friends were wonderful.

Our tour guide was so fun and knowledgeable. The small group made the experience feel more relaxed. It might cost a little more, but well worth it.

We had a marvelous tour guide named Tony. He was so much fun and hope to see him next time we come to the UK. He was full of information and you only had to ask to get him to tell you more if you were interested. Sad that Avebury was taken off the tour. Winchester was okay but it was just a brief stop to see a table that was thought to be King Arthur's round table but it's not.

Tony was our driver and he was wonderful! Great information and kept us on schedule so we got to see everything in a timely manner. Food shop he recommended was so tasty! Overall I would tell anyone wanting to see Stonehenge to take this option as you get to see more than one Henge and Avebury was very interesting.

This trip did NOT go to Glastonbury Tor as described. We were all upset that we didn't get to walk up the Tor as stated in the tour description the tour guide said it was because a long time ago someone hurt their ankle. Why not change your description, then? They knew before the tour that we would not go there, but it is advertised in the description of this tour. This would have been a deal breaker for us, as climbing the Tor was the reason we were on this tour. We also had less than 15 minutes at the Chalice Well, not even enough time to see the site. We saw the well and walked through a small part of the gardens, but we were rushing to see even that much. Our guide repeatedly made comments about the hippies and odd folk who might be praying there, even though several religions consider this a sacred place. We spent more time on the bus than we did at our destinations. The bus was late for our pickup and no one was on site to tell us they were on their way, not even other tour guides with their company. The destinations are wonderful and worth the long drive, but not if you only get less than 15 minutes at one of the most important stops on the tour. We were happy with all of our other tours in the UK and Italy, but this one was very rushed, the guide disrespectful and the tour description incorrect. I feel as though we were tricked by the description and am very disappointed the tour did't go where it promised to go, especially after hearing they knew beforehand that we weren't going to the Tor.

Too many things to see during the same day. The stay in Stonehenge should be longer. You will spend too much time on the road...

A really fun day, with great sites. Our tour guide, Oz, was fantastic. I and #39;ve been on a few different tours in the UK, and Oz was by far the best informed guide I and #39;ve had (I actually left with a recommended reading list). He also went out of his way to help a tour member who was struggling physically.

The tour was really fun and well organized. Oz, our guide, was very knowledgeable and helpful. The one thing I would change is the sights in Glastonbury. We would have preferred to skip the Chalice Wells and hike up the Tor. Perhaps they could give people the option to do one or the other?

It was a nice tour with a very good guide, Tim._br/_ Due to traffic and time limits we couldn't see the Glastonbury Thor, and that's a big minus, because I was really looking for seeing Avalon

We had a great time visiting Stonehenge and the Abbey at Glastonbury, where the remains of King Arthur were found, was very beautiful. In the little town of Glastonbury they had a great selection of delicious pasties and bakeries to grab a quick snack. Personally I loved Avebury where you visit several large henges just as old as Stonehenge but you can touch and walk among the stones. There are amusing stories about some of the stones within the henges and it was interesting learning about the speculated rituals and superstitions the ancient people who built them might have believed. This tour would have received stars but our guide Tony, albeit occasionally funny, had a short temper, talked about nightmare tourists and got off the coach at one point to yell at a honking bus driver.

Excellent tour. Tony was very informative, entertaining and helpful. While I wish there could have been a bit more time at the various sites, at least getting to SEE them was a plus. We had good weather as well, which always makes for a good experience.

I went to Stonehenge 25 years ago, but this time is better for me, because now I understand english better. And Visiting to Glastonbury and Avebury was my dream. With this tour I did everything in one day, learning history a lot from very nice guide. He was very kind and know a lot. I am very impressed.

Oz was a great guide - provided excellent commentary on a wide variety of topics and sites. I would rather have had the chance to climb the Glastonbury Tor than go to Chalice Wells. Well-organized small group tour overall.

This tour was everything I was hoping it to be. Our guide sorry can't remember his name at the moment was informative, kind and helpful. He had great historic information as well as the spiritual history and meanings of the sites. We felt that we were in good hands.Everything was well organized with plenty of time to enjoy each location. The sites themselves are not to be missed. This was a major highlight of our 3 week trip to Europe. We used Viator for other parts of our trip and were equally pleased.

Viator was a no show. We waited at the location for our Stonehenge tour for 3 hours. No one came. We tried calling and emailing, no connection was made. The gentleman behind the desk at the hotel states this has happened with this company before. Wish I could give less than one star.

Brilliant day, Tony the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his job we would recommend him to anyone._br/_ The only down size with this tour is the distance between attractions and you may spend more time travelling in the van than actually you spend at the locations.

Stunning! Magnificent, no superlatives comes close to how I felt about this trip! But i'm sure it's not for everyone! David our guide had a passion for history so was easy to get caught up in his enthusiasm! Great day that will be forever remembered.

Absolutely fantastic day in the English countryside. Driver David was lovely, informative and didn't cut any time out of our tour at all. We got stuck in traffic in the morning, but he just said 'we'll be home a bit late.' and was completely relaxed about it._br/_ Avebury was in my opinion better than Stonehenge, because you could walk amongst the stones. In Stonehenge you can't. It's something to consider if you want to actually walk up close to the monument._br/_ Totally enjoyed the day, as did my father and grandfather.

We had a very good experience except for one thing: my seven year old granddaughter started throwing up just before we were to get on the bus. My son and my granddaughter were thus unable to go on the trip. Is there someway I could get a discount for their fares? I would really appreciate it. In light of our dreadful transfer pickup, I believe I am owed some compensation for one or both situations. Thank you. Pat Nichol

I really enjoyed this tour! It was a great experience and David (the tour guide) had a wealth of knowledge regarding the various locations. I would suggest extending this tour because I felt that the time we had at each location was too short. I really wanted to stop awhile and take it all in, but the tour had a very tight schedule. Overall, it was fantastic and I would love to visit these places again.

What a fantastic day! the smaller group and comfy mini-coach meant that we spent loads of time where we wanted to! (moslty in and around Glastonbury, so take your walking shoes for the Tor) and saw so much of the country-side enroute. AND - the entry prices to everything was already included!! woo!!

The small-group day trip to Stonehenge, Glastonbury and Avebury from London was a fine experience. It was paced "just right." We were given only one option for pickup, and realized later a much closer point of pickup could have been available, had we booked directly with International Friends. This was a very minor issue, but other pickup options would be convenient. Robert, our guide, was informative and interesting. We fully enjoyed our day and gladly recommend this day trip and viator without reservation.

Our guide was friendly, intelligent and very knowledeable. We had a small group and had enough time at each site, the day was well organized. Unfortunately, we hit really bad traffic on the way back and were an hour late returning to London. It did not matter to us or the other travellers, but meant the guide worked later and he did not complain about it, he was still concerned with our well being. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Leader was very knowledgeable and well spoken. Selection of sites and time were very good. There was an equipment problem (minibus would not start) which the vendor handled very well. Ordered a coach that came with only an hour and a half delay which the vendor added to the back end of the trip. No loss of coverage.

Make sure you ask for David- (this tour is done by International Friends agency and David is with them). David tells the histories and background- weaving them together like a beautiful tapestry with passion. An excellent guide is important, otherwise might as well book bus tickets:) Never one to ask, or, hint for tips. He is a very very good guide, who is warmly welcomed at every stop we stopped at too._br/_ In addition to this, because it is a small-group (see title of tour), we travel by a mini-van which takes you on many small roads passing by gorgeous sceneries, which is impossible with big tour agencies and their big coaches.
