Surf trips are the premiere way to experience California surfing culture in a single weekend. Local surf guides take guests exploring the different surf breaks up the Malibu coast, enjoying local food (restaurants, and home cooked by our guides), and a night of camping in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There is no better way to learn surfing and experience the lifestyle that goes along with it.
The morning of your trip you will meet at your guide's house at 7am. Here you will meet the other surfers, sort out all your gear and then head to the beach. The first surf lesson will be focused on getting comfortable in the water and learning basics. This lesson will allow your guide to become familiar with your particular ability level so he/she can provide you with personalized instruction throughout the rest of the trip. Surfing equipment and snacks will be provided.
The group will then head up coast in search of more waves, and lunch. Driving on the Pacific Coast Highway is an experience in itself, as it is littered with celebrity homes and history. Your guide will point out the many world famous surf spots you pass along the way. Feel free to ask him/her any questions you have about surfing, the ocean, or California in general. Your guide will stop for lunch at the discretion of the group as there are many classic establishments along the Pacific Coast Highway. After lunch it's time to head to the next beach location for lesson number two.
Lesson number two will be focused on expanding the skill set introduced in the morning. It will likely be at a different surf spot with a different kind of wave, showing you the variety of surf that LA can offer. Learning how to choose your own waves, ride down the line, and manage a surfing a lineup are some of the things that will be covered in this lesson. At this point in the day guests will be tired and sunbathing, naps, snacking and relaxing on the beach are completely acceptable. Guests may surf, or relax, as much as they want and simply enjoy the California sun with surfboards and a guide at their disposal.
When it is getting close to sunset, the group will head up Malibu Canyon road to the campground. On Malibu Canyon Road, a vertical rise of 3000ft quickly changes the scenery to that of beautiful vistas, and the towering walls of Malibu Canyon. The clean mountain air is a welcome escape from the hot days sun. Once at the camp ground you will set up camp while your guide prepares dinner. Camping equipment and dinner is included. The food will be a classic regional cuisine (food options are discussed before the trip). After dinner, guests enjoy the campfire under the stars.
The next morning you get to wake up and live this adventure all over again. Your guide will cook you breakfast as you pack up camp and soon enough you are at the beach again. The third lesson will focus on improving ones skills and areas of difficulty from the day before. Guests will continue surfing as long as they want with breaks and snacks in between sessions. Then you will pack up and head for a final afternoon lunch before being on your way, with endless inspiration for adventure, and plenty of stories to tell.
