Avila and Segovia Day Trip from Madrid

Madrid, Spain

Soak up Spain's fascinating history and legendary culture on an Avila and Segovia day trip from Madrid. Explore the walled city of Avila, Spain’s best-preserved 11th-century fortified town, and discover why it is known as the City of Stones and Saints. Then unravel centuries of history in the city of Segovia, from its two-tiered Roman aqueduct to its Moorish fort and stunning Gothic cathedral. With the option to indulge in a gastronomic lunch, your trip to these two UNESCO World Heritage sites is a feast for all the senses!

Your day trip from Madrid to Avila begins with a stop at hilltop Los Cuatro Postes to admire superb panoramic views over the city of Avila, dotted with church towers and Gothic palaces, and declared a UNESCO ‘Heritage of Mankind’ city.

Entering the 11th-century city walls encircling Avila, notice how the 90 fortified towers and circular turrets look like they’ve stepped out of a storybook, and hear how Avila is an important pilgrimage site as the birthplace of the mystic writer Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515–82). Then explore two of the best examples from the astounding array of Romanesque and Gothic churches in Avila, packed with one of the highest concentrations of Romanesque and Gothic churches in Spain.

Your guided visit to Avila’s churches takes you to San Vicente Basilica, a Gothic masterpiece and home to some of Spain’s most prized examples of Romanesque sculpture. Then see how Gothic and Romanesque architecture combine in Avila’s celebrated cathedral, with its fortress design and alabaster chapels and tombs.

Continue your Segovia day trip to see one of the finest Roman-era monuments in Spain -- Segovia's Roman aqueduct. Admire the scale of this incredible feat of engineering, built entirely without mortar during the reign of Augustus in the 1st century AD, and see how the aqueduct originally had 118 arches and was 10 miles (16 kilometers) long.

Your guided tour of Segovia also takes you to the famous Alcazar, a beautiful 11th-century medieval fort that inspired the design of Disney’s fairytale castle. One of the finest Moorish fortresses in Spain, it’s also at the heart of one of the most significant group of medieval buildings in the country. Step back in time and imagine the medieval tournaments that once took place here, and the heroic knights who fought in the court of the kings of Castile who ruled from Segovia.

Complete your Segovia guided visit with a look at the city’s impressive cathedral, the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain and known as ‘the Lady of the Cathedrals’.

On this day trip to Segovia you have the option of including a tourist-style lunch of stuffed veal or a superb gastronomic meal featuring local Segovian specialties such as roasted suckling pig.

Our tour guide was absolutely great and very informative - you don't want to be late returning to the bus between spots because she left 4 people behind at Avila as they were 20 min late - they joined us again when we got to Sergovia. The walls around the city at Avila are amazing as you can walk around them. The Aqua duct !!!! what can I say - it blows your mind to think that it was built all those years ago_br/_ Highly recommend this tour

This was a great day trip to see an interesting small city and remains of a Roman aqueduct. The lunch was just okay, but the sightseeing was great. BTW this is a very busy place filled with tourists!

GREAT tour! We enjoyed seeing life outside of big city Madrid. Avila and Segovia are both so full of history. Our guide was very knowledgeable about all of the sites we saw. We were given some time on our own in both cities which was nice. My only recommendation is to pass on the lunch that is offered and just do the tapas. The restaurant is down an alley away from the Aquaduct in Segovia. There are restaurants closer to the aquaduct so you can have a view!

Great tour. Very knowledgable guide. My only problem is that I was not aware of it being a big group- I would have payed more to have a small group tour had I known. Recommend this be included in the description. _br/_ And the guide had a very thick accent- so if your not an avid traveler- you may miss some information.

Avila was great but did not get to see Segovia as half of our group didn’t.The directions given by Beatrice our guide were vague, and most of the English speaking part of our group did not find her. I with about 5 others finally found them, and we actually left one person behind completely.

A must-do tour! I liked Avila a little bit more than Segovia but the aqueduct and the cochinillo in Segovia are un-missable. The team from Julia Travel was very professional.

Glad we made it on this trip. Full day. Covered most places. Get the lunch included. Make sure you stick with the group. Easily, can get lost. you may have to return to Madrid at your own expense.

I am so glad I booked this tour. I loved the 2 towns. It is nice to always go out of the big cities and explore the nearby towns. The aqueduct is a must see! The surrounding plaza by the aqueduct is a nice place to just relax and eat some yummy food!

The countryside from Madrid to Avila and Segovia is truly beautiful, so the trip itself was very enjoyable. Avila as having the world's oldest complete medieval wall was very interesting but seemed somehow a bit unreal, seeming to lack a real life. Seeing a saint's finger is not my thing, be it interesting. The wall itself is spectacular. Segovia on the other hand was a place that I could spend time in, a lively and very human city that exuded warmth and vitality. Our guide was very good, lots of stories and information. Overall, a good day.

Highly recommended! Our guide timed his explanations and the stops perfectly. We didn't feel rushed, didn't feel like we missed anything. It was great to hear some history about Spain and it was wonderful to see medieval structures and the cathedral was simply extraordinary. The aqueduct too.

The Avila and Segovia trip was wonderful. Amazing towns._br/_ The gourmet lunch included was less than my expectation. The food was very ordinary or even less ordinary considering the town 's known for roasted suckling pigs.

Visited a lot of churches in Avila. In Segovia, our group separated for lunch depending on the package we got but the tour guide did not give clear directions on how to go to the meeting place after lunch.

The trip was well organised from central Madrid. we spent too long looking at churches inside and not enough time just generally exploring - at both locations. lunch was not great and not good value to buy as part of the package - better to find your own. _br/_ the Segovia part of the day was great to experience - looks like a wonderful and atmospheric city.

This was an amazing trip, had a great tour guide, she was very knowledgeable. Had a wonderful lunch and then went on to see the aqueduct, what a sight! Then went to the Cathedral and on to the Alcazar. Day went fast but it was well worth it.

Great Trip. Good guide. Left sharp at 9 and got back Plaza Espiano at 6. Tour well paced, great monuments, enough time to explore a bit on your own - worth every bit. Go for it.

A most enjoyable day trip. The bus was comfortable, the guide knowledgeable and well worth the time and money. Highly recommended. Our tour guide was very good. She would be even better if she slowed down a bit when she spoke in English. But I am jut nit-picking.

Great tour. I knew less about Avila beforehand so I was pleasantly surprised at how nice and quaint it was. Segovia has so much to see it would have been easy to spend more time there. All in all this tour provided an opportunity to see the best of both towns in one day. The gastronomic lunch exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend it. Tour guide was excellent and the bus was very comfortable. A very professionally conducted tour.

The tour make up was good. However the tour guide the same as the one for the Escorial tour - while giving us good info and accompanying us at times - was eager to leave us on our own and telling us where and when to meet her next. The tour could have been better with a more involved guide.

Excellent tour, Excellent Guide

Review by:   Caroline S,    October 2017 Review: 1 star rating: I do not recommend this
The tour guide was totally uninterested and uninformative save for the basic facts. It was a good job that the monuments themselves were so great that the trip was worth going at all.

Review by:   tfisch,    October 2017 Review: 4 star rating: Recommended
These are 2 very special towns to see. Segovia especially is absolutely amazing. Seeing a Roman aquaduct in the midst of modern town is not to be missed. Our guide was ok. Her accent was not the problem. I had difficulty because her directions were not always clear . She was very knowledgeable._br/_ I would ask Viator to consider this trip by train if trains connect these cities with Madrid. The bus trip between each city and back was quite long.

This tour was in both English and Spanish. Having a bilingual tour definitely slowed the tour down. The tour guide's English also was not great and it was sometimes hard to understand her. She also did not seem to enjoy answering questions. We did not have enough time at the end to explore the alcazar. I had the tourist meal, which was almost exactly the same as the more expensive meal, but smaller portions and alcohol was not included. I thought the food was good, although the people at my table did not seem to like it very much.
