Haleakala, Iao Valley and Central Maui Day Tour

Maui, United States of America

See the best central Maui on this scenic and informative guided day trip, with hotel pickup and drop-off. Your knowledgeable local guide will take you to the volcanic Haleakala crater, Iao Valley, the unique rocky pinnacle known as the Iao Needle and the historic town of Wailuku. You’ll catch glimpses Maui’s stunning landscape, learn about its agricultural history and explore otherworldly terrain at its parks on this experiential sightseeing tour.

Your 8-hour central Maui day trip begins with a pickup at your hotel. Meet your expert guide and get ready for an immersive look at many of Maui’s unique highlights, including scenic drives through its valleys and agricultural regions, walks through its state and national parks, and a glimpse at the seat of its government.

Your day kicks off with dramatic views at Haleakala National Park, covering 33,000 acres of rocky, volcanic wilderness and home to a variety of wildlife. Summit Maui’s 10,023-foot (3,007-meter) dormant volcano while learning about its geologic history on the driving ascent. Take in the tropical scenery and expansive views before driving on to the next piece of eye candy: the Iao Needle located in Iao Valley State Park.

The needle is a fascinating erosional pinnacle rising 1,200 feet (366 meters) from the Iao Valley floor and surrounded by a volcanic crater. Walk along a short trail to a panoramic overlook and enjoy the view. Nearby, learn about the Kaahumanu Church, named after Queen Kaahumanu and erected in 1876. Spend 30-minutes admiring its architecture and views of Iao Valley.

Next, get a dose of Hawaiian culture on a drive through the city of Wailuku, the seat of Maui’s government and location of its historic state and federal buildings. Listen to your guide as you ride past Maui’s famous flower farms, pineapple fields and sugar cane plantations. Be sure to bring your camera — these are sights unlike anywhere else. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your Maui hotel.

We really enjoyed our day on this tour. Our driver told wonderful stories and was a very nice man. So glad we could leave the driving to someone else while we enjoyed the view.

Perfect tour. Definitely wear very warm clothing. The wait in the cold, the very early rise....all worth the incredible view.

This was a wonderful tour and really worth the money. There was hotel pickup and drop off with food, snacks and drinks also provided. Our tour guide was excellent and stopped at all the viewing places on the way and also explained to us in detail all the roadside views too while driving with full attention. This tour should absolutely be a part of every Maui vacation....!!

Our main goal was to see Haleakala and we were not disappointed by the beautiful scenery. We were lucky to have weather on our side when we visited Nov 9 2017. Our tour bus only took us up to the visitor's center as we were informed that the summit which was 0.5 miles away up a slope is not accessible to tour buses, only people in cars or on foot. Truth is if we could have 20 more minutes, we could have walked up to the summit. That is a pity, particularly in light of how much we spent stuffing around elsewhere see below!

The visits to Haleakala and Iao Valley were brilliant - very picturesque and the guide Nettie was excellent. Final stop in Central Maui was very brief and seemed more for transfer purposes.

Not as nice as the Road to Hana tour but still very enjoyable and the lunch stop at an Italian restaurant was better than on the Road to Hana tour._br/_ My driver was Junior and if you're on a tour with him you are in for a treat.

Review by:   Edward F,    September 2017 Review: 4 star rating: Recommended
Some confusion about lunch, was told we are on our own for lunch, but was taken to an italian restaurant and told that we had to eat there, because there was no place for us to eat the lunch that we packed and took with us. Some confusion about the pick up and drop off as well. Didn't realize that bringing an infant meant that you have to have them in your lap. A 2 1/2 year old may be a little difficult to keep on your lap. If you need that seat, make sure to pay for it. The tour itself was wonderful, as was the guide and driver! With a little knowledge before the tour, it would have been a 5 star!

It was an enjoyable day, flooding damage in the Ioa Valley kept us from having the opportunity to make that part of the trip. Driver was very thoughtful and accommodate frequent stops for pictures and leisurely views of scenery. My favorite was our stop in Kula, nice shop, great coffee!! Going with and experienced driver is recommended to get information that you would not otherwise have access to. Would do again.

First time we ever did an organized tour. Family of 5 : we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, mostly thanks to our driver/guide. Junior was amazing for the day trip! He was kind, funny and definitely very informative. We learned A LOT about the island of Maui, the culture, language and people. We suggest you book this tour early during your vacation as to better appreciate everything that Junior explains as it unfolds throughout your stay on the island. Haleakala itself seems to be a must and we liked being able to sit back to enjoy the view rather than needing to drive. Mahalo Junior! Keep up the great work! Warm aloha from a very satisfied Canadian family.

Our tour guide was Junior, after a couple cups of coffee he seemed to come around. lol Very knowledgeable and great driving, especially going up Haleakala, glad to say no one was sick with the twists and turns. Keep in mind to dress warmly! It was pretty windy and chilly when we reached the top, and even at the summit. Highly recommend doing this tour! beautiful views, great tour guide!

A wonderful tour. Our tour guide, also our mini-bus driver, was outstanding. He had a degree in Hawaiian history, was very knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, courteous.

Haleakala national part was a treat to visit. Iao valley was closed though. The beauty of the tour was enhanced by our guide Judy! She was entertaining.. Haleakala scenic beauty is once in a lifetime experience and one should not miss this. If you are in Maui for only one-two days, then this is the first place you visit and choose this particular tour.

What can I say, this is the best excursion I have ever been on and I travel a good bit. Even my 13 year old said it was the best thing we did all week in Maui. Our tour guide, Henry, was the best. Very knowledgeable, friendly and funny!

The visit to Haleakala was very good, but unfortunately the Iao Valley had been flooded so we missed out on that._br/_ A lot of time was wasted by having a restaurant lunch stop. I would have preferred to bring my own lunch, or been taken somewhere to just buy a sandwich. Then more time could have been spent looking at the sights.

I'm not interested in just shopping, an we didn't get to go out on the dirt trails. I would not recommend this tour

The guide/driver Judy was fantastic! She was a native Hawaiian who told stories about old Maui and changes going on with new Maui. She knew the names of every exotic tree and plant along the way too. This tour is for anyone who wants to get away from the beach for a day. i got pictures of lush green peaks, moonlike craters, an old cowboy town, sugar cane fields. i don't think I could have found all those places in a rental car.

An excellent tour, well narrated and driven thank you! The views from 10,023 feet up Haleakala were amazing! Lunch was disappointing, I recommend grabbing a sandwich out of one of the local shops.

Roy our tour guide, was on time, and extremely interesting. He told us all the insider history of the various places we were passing through. Lunch was excellent. Pick up was a little slow because 3 different tour companies were combining tours to save money so it was a full 19 people on our tour bus. Haleakala was interesting with the many switchbacks. There wasn't much of any view because it was pretty clouded in at the top. A for Roy the tour guide.

Awesome trip! I had so much fun and I saw a lot. Really worth it to go on this tour.

Review by:   PATRICIA L,    November 2015 Review: 4 star rating: Recommended
Our tour guide, Roy, was very knowledgeable about the area and the restaurant we stopped at for lunch had delicious, reasonably priced food so that trip was a good one to book. I would have appreciated being warned that I needed to use mosquito repellent at the Iao Valley. For the price I paid, I would have expected to at least get complimentary water but nothing was included other than the tour. The original tour pick up time information provided upon purchase of the trip was incorrect and it appeared there was significant communication problems between Viator and the company who conducts the actual tours. I enjoyed the trip but it could have great with some basic amenities provided.

Warning must take a JACKET! Haleakala is very cold! We did not get this memo and froze. I loved the views from Haleakala. Not sure why the tour had to start so early we got back to our rooms by 3.30pm. Picked up at 6.30am!! I do recommend this as you see very different scenery on the Island

Tour was enjoyable and the guide gave us a lot of information. The road up to the summit is windy and my husband had a bad attack of motion sickness. For those who want to just relax and don't want to drive, this is for you. The roads are in great condition so next time i am going to drive up there myself.

Time was too short to stay on the mountain. We could have use the time to walk around and hike to a higher point of the mountain. Lunch place is well chose. Nice to walk around the little town after lunch.

I'll have to say it was a fairly good tour. Cheryl was our tour guide. She was very knowledgeable. You'll have to pack extra snacks because it's a bit of a drive. We had gone on a cloudy day up Haleakala so be prepared for cold weather DRESS WARM and bring an extra change of clothes if it gets warm

the tour guide was very late arriving to pick us up at our hotel... She was very boring and acted like she did not want to be there. We were very disappointed that no breakfast or lunch was included in the cost of the trip which was very expensive for what we saw and visited. We would rate this trip with one star and would not recommend this trip to anyone.

The day started off very slowly with nearly 2 hours picking people up, waiting for new drivers and then swapping buses!! We did not have very long at each place it's mainly have a look take a picture and back on bus. The driver who is also guide was good and told us lots of information. We were taken to a restaurant for lunch not included in tour the food was nice but I think the time could of been used better.

It is a worthy tour but we had trouble getting going. For some reason we had to change our original driver before we started and once the new driver arrived we had to go elsewhere to change to a different bus. Stuff happens and I get it. Uncle Charlie, our driver was very knowledgeable

All guests should confirm that they can tell the time and wear a watch, before being allowed to join the group, or they should be made to do a private tour.
