Maui Hana Coast Day Trip

Maui, United States of America

Explore the lush tropical beauty of Maui's Hana coast on a delightful day trip to the eastern side of the island. On this scenic Hana tour you will have plenty of photo opportunities as you follow the Hana Highway - one of the most beautiful stretches of twisting, winding road on the planet.

The Hana road tour takes you through rainforest and along the coast, past waterfalls, bamboo forests, cliffs and colorful flowers. You'll have the opportunity to photograph the town of Paia, Kaumahina State Park, Keanae Valley Lookout, Pua'a Ka'a, Wailua Falls and Waianapanapa State Parks on Hana tours.

Your professional guide will escort you to Ohe'o Stream and Pools for a refreshing swim (weather and time permitting), and throughout the day you will discover cascading waterfalls, lush rainforests and windsurfing beaches as you experience the hidden side of Maui on this Hana tour.

The Hana district of Maui is generally considered to be the area between Keanae and Kaupo. Today there is a population of approximately 2,500 people living in the district, with around 1,500 in the area of Hana town. Before European contact, the area supported a large Hawaiian population. Queen Ka'ahumanu, wife of King Kamehameha, was born here in a cave by the sea at Ka'uiki Hill.

Two thumbs up. I would recommend this trip to everybody including those of you who suffers from motions sickness like I do. Of course I had to take Dramamine less drowsy formula, this 13 hours trip was well worth it. Our driver/ tour guide, Gavin, really made a difference on this trip. Not only he is native Hawaiian, but he is truly passionate about Hawaii and preserving natural beauty of Hawaii. With his knowledge and explanation of every corner of Hana, now my favorite place in Hawaii is Hana. Simply breathtaking. I would deterred all of those dare drivers who opted to drive up to Hana themselves from doing it so, and let the professional do the driving. The one who knows Hana roads like back of his hands, Gavin. Bravo to Gavin and thank you for make our trip to Maui so enjoyable and memorable one.

This tour is about 8 hours long and is by bus through winding mountains. What you see most are trees, and very few and small waterfalls. There are two very brief stops during the tour and very little photo opportunities. I would not recommend this tour to anyone who is not able to sit for long periods of time.

Touring with Travis was a hoot. Hes from Hana so we learned so much more about the region. At lunch he sang and played the Hawaiian guitar - what a musician! Fascinating scenery. Glad we did this.

This trip was very informative and the driver was very knowledgeable on the history of Maui. Plan to spend more than 10 hours on this excursion and also the roads that you must travel can be a little scary I wish I would've known that. But if you can stand the long day you will see lots of waterfalls and beautiful mountain/volcano terrain. This trip was well worth the money so as long as you remember the length of the bus ride and the long hours you will be gone it will be a wonderful trip.

This Hana tour was one of the best parts of our Maui vacation. The ample breakfast buffet, lunch, and the unlimited snacks and drinks provided throughout the day, made this tour really worth the money. Free hotel pickup and drop-off were an additional bonus..... Our driver and guide, Travis was a Very nice, warm hearted, and loving person who referred to us, his guests, as FAMILY/ BROTHERS and SISTERS....and had vast knowledge of the area, history and vegetation besides being an expert, experienced, and careful driver too. When entering the tour bus in the morning, we asked Travis about whether to choose left or right side seats to sit, and he suggested left side. Thank you Travis, am sooooo grateful for that wonderful suggestion, because some of the magnificent views on the Road to Hana had maximum visibility from left side seats.....Stopped at several places including all the viewing spots on the way...Absolutely loved the way Travis stopped at each and every big/small waterfall and sang in a funny way waaaaaterfall....He also taught us some great Hawaiian greetings.....A Hui Hou.....!!

Aloha! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this day trip. It was a once in a lifetime experience. We were picked up and returned to our hotel which made it convenient. We had plenty of time at each stop and were not rushed. Our bus driver, Kane, was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about the flowers, trees, and vegetation. He was also very safety conscious. At one point he even passed out wet-wipes when we returned to the bus after a long hike. The tour provided soft drinks, juice and water. Some of the highlights included walking on the black sandy beach, hiking to a beautiful waterfall, and seeing the Keanae Congregational Church church that was built in 1860. One suggestion: don't buy the lunch that is part of the tour package. Instead purchase a delicious lunch that is available at the lunch stop. Oh, there is also delicious banana bread, too!!

Maui Hana trip was certainly worthwhile. The tour guide/driver was very well informed and interacted well with the tourists. The lunch exceeded our expectations. We would consider taking another tour in the future.

Review by:   Thuong B,    November 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
First off, I just want to say that I did book this tour last minute due to the roads being pretty intense... way crazier than I thought before I got to Maui. Pick up from our hotel was 6:30. Said the tour was suppose to start at 7 am. We didn't technically start until about 9-9:30 since we had to meet at the breakfast spot. Breakfast was okay... just some juice, fruit, and a couple different pastries. After breakfast we ended up having to swing by the airport to pick up more people going on the tours. The tour guide was nice enough to accommodate people who get motion sickness very easily to the front window seats. I was hoping for more stops along road to hana. I felt like we were on the road more just getting a tour through the windows than anything. The places that other reviewers said they did, we didn't get to do. Tour guide said they don't have swimming stops anymore either because it's too dangerous. We were only at the black sand beach for about 30 minutes. We basically had to run down to the beach and back, wasn't really able to enjoy it whatsoever. The lunch stop didn't have many great choices/variety, but the mahi mahi I got from the food stand ended up being pretty good. I got a lot of information about birds, flowers, trees and rocks and that's pretty much the summary of it. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this tour. The smaller group tour with some other company that I noticed on the same route stopped more at more areas. If you guys ended the swimming stop at the 7 sacred pools, at least let the visitors enjoy the ONE beach stop we did stop at black sand beach.

I'm glad I wasn't trying to drive myself. There was so much to see and I would have missed so much. Driver was very good and managed to get us in at all the best photo spots. Made for a long 12 hour day from pick up to drop off and the last part of the trip was very bumpy._br/_ Views of the coast and waterfalls. Driver was informative and knew a lot about the area.

Our guide - Peaches - was simply a delight. As with any of these kinds of tours, there are always choices made that include some things and exclude others and that was the case here. Still, Peaches stories and insights made the day wonderful. And it was simply beautiful

Aloha!_br/_ This is a very long tour which made for an extremely long day. We started at 0615 and returned at 1830. Our guide Ed was fantastic, very knowledgeable and friendly. This tour should state that it is more like 12 hours vs 10. The Seven Sacred Pools at Ohe'o were closed for swimming and that was a big disappointment as that was one of the highlights of the tour. The time at each spot was not very long, the majority of time was spent on the bus. The banana bread stop was great, macadamia nut banana bread is delicious, black sand beach was nice, and the stop for lunch was good. There are a lot of one road bridges and very narrow streets on cliffs which were a bit scary and the road is very bumpy for a good stretch of time towards the end of the trip. If you don't mind sitting on a bus for an extended amount of time then you may find it worth the time. Would not recommend this tour for children.

Don't know where to start. Our driver was Travis and he was nothing short of fantastic. His knowledge was amazing and he even pointed out little things that most people miss. The price included a continental breakfast and I paid the extra for lunch which was well worth it. The tour had plenty of drinks on hand the entire day. Travis even sang to us various Hawaiian songs. Now the one thing that was bad was the advertisement for hotel pick up. The place we stayed was on the list but when the tour company, Polynesian Tours contacted us, we were told we had to meet the shuttle at a shopping center that was about 5 miles away. Polynesian Tours and Viator need to get their act together on specifics such as this.

Very nice tour with loads of stops._br/_ One thing I would change is the lunch stop at some sort of Eco organic farm where there aren't many food options and it's extremely overpriced!_br/_ My driver was Junior and I would recommend doing this tour with him!

Highly recommend this tour. We would not have liked to drive the road ourselves, leave it to the experts! Our driver was very knowledgeable of the area and as he grew up in the area he actually pointed out where his grandparents lived along the drive. The driver was very attuned to our needs and had water and juice available. He made sure we stopped frequently for bathroom stops. We had lunch in Hana which was included in our tour and very good. He was a very careful driver and we felt safe at all times.

As a sightseeing tour this event was very enjoyable and informative. There was so much to see and take in, the trip is spoiled by what you can't see and do. The trip might be scary to drive for your self, but overall this tour was like a beautiful catalogue of all the things you could do, later.

The tour was great! I wish we could have been out to see more, but it is a very narrow and winding road so you get out at the safest spots possible. Definitely don't miss this tour and get a lot sf of Aunty Sandy's banana bread! Kane was a great guide who always puts safety first!

This is not to be missed! The drive to Hana and beyond on narrow and winding roads is best left to someone familiar with the roads, and Larry did an amazing job. He was also kind enough to provide water for us all day. We saw incredible views, and learned more about trees and flowers and the land than we can ever remember, but it was all fascinating. We loved this tour and learned so much. A must!

Very good tour with an excellent tour guide Ed. Ed know so much about Hawaii and the sites along the road to and from Hana! It's a long day, so be prepared. Buy the lunch that is an option with this tour, much easier, and there really isn't a whole lot of options for food to begin with!

Our guide Bruce was the BEST tour guide I've ever had! He really made the whole trip worthwhile. He was very informative and hilarious and kept us alert to hidden gems that you might not see if you were just driving the road yourself. We learned a lot about the history of the island and we stopped at a lot of beautiful water falls, beaches, and other great photo opportunities. Unfortunately the pools are closed so you're not able to go swimming, but the trip is still worth every penny!

We saw many waterfalls along the way and the guide was lovely. However, the day ended up going for 13 hours, which was far too long. They were also quite disorganised with the pick up times. We ended up waiting for 20 minutes in the cold dark morning. We highly recommend taking nausea tablets beforehand, as the roads are very winding.

The places we went to were beautiful, but it was all ruined by our tour guide/driver, Ed. He was very grouchy and rude to everyone. He had a very negative attitude and complained about everything on the intercom the people he drove past, the other drivers, etc. He would scold people for talking quietly among themselves and ruined the entire experience! At the end of our tour, we had to switch drivers to drop us off at our hotels. The new driver was George and he was so pleasant! He introduced himself, spoke to us nicely, and told us interesting facts about local places/history. He made recommendations about visiting places and was just wonderful. It is such a shame we were stuck with Ed. If you get Ed as a driver, you will definitely be disappointed too!

Our guide was super and it was interesting that she had grown up in the Hana area and learned to drive from her grandmother! It was nice to be able to watch the scenery instead of the road, especially when it was one-way.

Unique and exciting adventure. Not for the faint of heart as several of the roads are very narrow with extremely steep drops down to the ocean and/or canyon.. My recommendation is take a tour where the driver knows the twists and turns in the road, Taking a rental car yourself is nerve wracking._br/_ Amazing scenery. Long day starting at 6:30am, and finishing at 7:20pm but worth it._br/_ Our driver was excellent. Very knowlefgeable. Good steady and skillful driver thank goodness!!

This tour makes a giant clockwise circle around east Maui. The southbound road past Hana is quite bumpy. Would recommend taking an antinausea pill at the beginning for those who are prone to motion sickness. Our driver, Wayne, must have been a botanist in his previous like. Super knowledgeable!

Highly recommended tour. However, keep in mind this is a all day tour, very long hour- we left the hotel 6:30am and return to the hotel at 7pm. Nonetheless, it is well worth it. The driver, Larry is very knowledgeable and you learn a lot about the island. recommended to buy the lunch package as there were not much available for lunch around Hana area.

Our driver, Wayne, was awesome. The first part of the trip was great. Lots of wonderful things to see and take pictures of. After lunch, the roads were so rough, that I could not enjoy the ride. All in all, it was a very good trip. Tiring-we were picked up at 6:20 am and got dropped back off at 7:30.

I experienced consistent communication problems between Viator and the company who does the actual tours including pick up time, whether meals were included, and information about the trip itinerary. It was extremely frustrating and I'm not sure I would book with Viator again. In addition, the restaurant we stopped at for lunch served horrendous, bland food white rice, sad green salad and really gross boiled chicken thighs with skin topped with an icky brown sauce. I basically picked at the rice and salad and gave my chicken thighs to the stray cat crying outside who really appreciated them. I would never eat there. Elizabeth, our tour guide, was reasonably informed about the Hawaiian points of interest but she was unable to answer a surprising number of questions. She was, however, an excellent driver and we really appreciated that as we wended through the curvy and dangerous-looking road. In addition, she did provide unlimited water and soft drinks for us which was great. The trip itself was very good to take at least once to see the gorgeous scenery.

The tour was really good. The tour guide very informative. Years of knowledge. We stopped at lots of great spots , got some great shots. I get travel sickness but I was prepared and fine. I took 2 kwell Aussie tablets before hand and wore the wrist bands. Yes there are lots of turns but views amazing. The only thing I would say is that everyone but us had lunch included think booked with someone else - they were all from mainland USA . And you stop at Hana at a pre- booked lunch spot. We were able to buy lunch there - either 27 for meal everyone else got or 19 sandwiches. But they sit you away from main group cause we didn't prepay, felt weird. But tour was great and would recommend.
