Beyond the Market Food Tour in Montreal

Montreal, Canada

Join this walking tour to visit at least 6 of your local guide's favourite eateries and watering holes. From artisan charcuteries to thirst-quenching craft beers, take delight in discovering the surrounding areas of the city's largest food market. You'll discover a different side of the city that you otherwise might miss out on. We focus on local, young entrepreneurs for our tasting spots and human scale environments for our in between walking segments.

Over the years Montreal has held a reputation as a city that loves to eat, and eat well. A trip to the Jean-Talon Market helps the outsider grasp the fact that farm-to-table is nothing new in town. On this food tour, you'll sample regional delicacies and meet the producers who take pride in the quality and distinction of their harvest.

Strolling through the city streets, you'll gain a better understanding of why diversity is synonymous with Montreal. The Vietnamese neighbor the Italians and further east the Latinos share the streets with the Maghrebis. Sit down for a full-flavored tasting at the city’s favorite Salvadorian hole-in-the-wall.

The Mile-Ex district is a peculiar part of town that has boomed in recent years, and it's here where young entrepreneurs are reshaping the local culinary scene. Savor the newest craft brews and learn about the progressive coffee renaissance one sip at a time.

Conclude your tour at the doorstep of Little Italy. Enjoy some comfort food with your new friends and set off on your own adventure with a list of your guide's favorite local food spots.

This was a great food tour and one my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed. Danny, our guide, took us to some small food cafes and bars as well as the markets in the Jean-Talon area as well as the last mile and mile ex areas. Some were well established, others were start ups and Danny provided the background behind each one. The samples in the park from the Dinnete Triple Crown were a great way to end the tour. It was also nice to be given a cheat sheet at the end of the tour on where we had been and some further recommendations. We would highly recommend this tour to anybody interested in some of the more unique dining experiences that you don't see in guidebooks.

The guide was tremendous. She was enthusiastic and really knew her stuff. She showed us places we would never have discovered ourselves and some food we had never eaten before. The neighbourhood places, the craft beer, the spots in the market and finally the picnic in the park we will never forget. A great tour, one of the best we have ever taken,

That was an amazing best experience in Montreal._br/_ Our fantastic guide Francine was so informative and took us to so many places all different kinds of food and culture, land scape, architecture, all sorts of aspect to lean about Montreal, I felt like I had 7 course dinner with beer, desert even coffee and she even took us to lovely picnic at the park in the neiborhood. It was totally worth it. We'll walk quite a bit, so wear comfortable shoes

Our tour guide, Frances, gave us a lively perspectives on the neighborhoods as we walked along sampling specialties from local restaurants. She was enthusiastic and showed us a neighborhood garden which is cultivated by residents. The foods/beverages we tasted were terrific, especially Papusas from El Salvador which we had never tried before. We often learned about the restaurant owners coming from different countries and settling in Montreal. We sampled spices at the Jean Talon market. Our small group was congenial and we ended a fabulous tour with a picnic under a tree on a beautiful warm Sunday afternoon feasting in a nearby park on fried chicken and hush puppies!

Outstanding tour! Ann Marie was incredible. Her love of her neighborhood is infectious. A great mix of eateries, places way off the beaten track. If you have an afternoon in Montreal, you cannot do better.

Interesting tour as our guide Anne Marie showed us a different perspective of Montreal, focusing more on neighbourhood and alternative restaurants rather than in traditional ones. However, we were expecting a more high-end cuisine considering the price we paid.

Excellent tour with good variety of food and drinks. Guide was superb. The group was small enough that we enjoyed our company while we walked around. Lots of fun and would highly recommend it.

From the moment tour guide and passionate Montreal civic booster Anne-Marie met the group and explained the transformation taking place in the neighborhood with food and civic engagement on full display the group realized that a magical afternoon awaited them. Unlike other walking tours where you visit time-honored landmarks, this tour captures the spirit of daily life and communal celebration of a particular neighborhood that struggles to retain cultural identity ethnic diversity with modernity and economic determinism. Anne-Marie is the glue that holds this overview together with her fantastic appreciation for the simple joys of eating and enjoying flavors, imagination a sour-cherry beer and art murals and pocket garden treasures everywhere. I would absolutely recommend this 3 hour adventure culminating with a picnic in the park featuring chicken recipes from Kentucky and the comraderie of new friendships made. We were expecting more bigger meals, instead of just snack food.....the tour guide was knowledgeable, but the food was just small tasting items... I expected more for what we paid : /

Anyone or any guide book can get you to the greatest hits, but it takes someone who knows and loves the city to take you the real city where the real people live. Ann Marie, the co-owner, took us to her faviorite hot spots for food, green gardens and murals. Definitely the highlight of our trip!!

I would highly recommend to anyone looking to something less touristy and lots of fun.

This was a last minute thing a coworker and I did on a business trip to Montreal. I was worth every penny. It was delicious, fun, and interesting. It had a personal touch and was off the beaten path. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Review by:   Loretta R,    September 2016 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Our guide was knowledgeable, but took us off track the last half of the tour. We took some back alleys to get to some start-up places that seemed to be friends of hers i.e. the small brew house and coffee only. Definitely, the high light was the Jean Talon Market place, where we could have spent much more time and gotten more food samples. The beginning of the tour, where we actually sat down for some good and unusual food was a good start to the tour. Wish it had ended as strongly!!

This was probably our favorite tour of all. We experienced such a wide variety of foods and this_br/_ excursion is well worth the money. You won't feel guilty at what you'll be eating and drinking, as_br/_ there is plenty of walking to rid yourself of the caloric intake._br/_ The open air market was like going into a jewelry store of food choices! Most enjoyable and filling._br/_ Our tour guide was the best!

Danny was great!! Very personable and knowledgeable about the area and the places he showed us. Loved the Salvadoran tasting at the beginning of the tour. We were a bit skeptical at first, but it turned out to be our favorite part of our vacation. Have already recommended him to several friends who may consider a trip to Montreal.

This was probably the best highlight of our Montreal trip. I went my my family of 4 and was greeted by Danny our awesome tour guide at the meeting point on time. We walked around the cool streets of Montreal and a few very green and good looking alleys with murals too. Danny embodies what Montreal as a city represents. He's got the soul of the city in him and that's what makes the tour really awesome. Now on to the food reviews -_br/_ It was the perfect global fusion overall._br/_ We tried dishes from so many parts of the world and local places too._br/_ The one really cool thing was, that unlike other food tours, where you only learn about the story behind the dishes, Danny also told us the amazing stories behind the establishments and the people who work / started the places. That was the cherry on the cake._br/_ We started off with a few local spots._br/_ The visit to the farmers market was incredible - We tried out veggies, meats, spices, cheeses, gelato all from different vendors._br/_ The tour had a brew pub visit too where we tried two sets of beers along with cheese this was a local place. There was a local coffee roastery along the way as well, which had a really good cold brew._br/_ It ended in a spectacular way with us eating goodies from a picnic basket, under the shade of a tree in a park._br/_ Recommendations - _br/_ Carry water, a cap and sun glasses, wear shorts and a tee or something comfi, be ready to walk at an easy pace, come hungry but not starving, and just let Danny take care of your tummy.

Danny was a great guide. I loved the offbeat and off the beaten path places we went. The food and drink were nicely varied....smoked meats, artisanal cheeses, micro brewed beer, gelati, to mention just a few examples. Jean Talon market was amazing! My only suggestion is that more free time was allowed there. I really enjoyed this tour!

We did the Beyond the Market Food Tour with Anne Marie, and it was great. The variety of offerings was excellent, and hearty -- definitely come hungry! Anne Marie is so passionate about what she does, and her enthusiasm definitely comes across. And as a true local in the neighborhood, she has so many insights and color commentary about the area, the people who live there, and new spots that visitors to Montreal should check out. This tour is definitely worth doing when you're in Montreal.

This tour was great! Not only did we eat like locals and get a deeper look at the AMAZING Jean Talon market, but our guide was extremely accommodating. We forgot to contact her and let her know we eat mostly vegetarian fish and don't like beer. She was quickly texted restaurants and vendors and got us some delicious smoked fish when the group had charcuterie and sodas at the brewpub. Highly recommend it!

I loved seeing the non-touristy spots on Montreal. Our guide Anna-Marie was funny, friendly and personable. She took us to restaurants and food spots around the north end of Montreal that she knows and loves. I ate well, found out more about the culture of Montreal and tried food I never ate before.

So much fun!! My wife and I love to visit Montreal for the food and culture, and on a previous trip we took a food tour of the Mile End district and loved it. To this day we still go back to several of those spots. Intent on trying something new, we signed up for the beyond the market tour, and set out with Danny on what turned out to be the highlight of our trip. To be honest, we enjoyed Danny's tour and his well-chosen sites even more than the Mile End tour. This is a much less-known region of Montreal, with cool neighborhoods, public artwork and restaurants we would never have seen if it weren't for the tour. And the Jean Talon market... ohhhh how wonderful! _br/_ Danny's knowledge of the local culture and passion for his job which didn't seem like a job! really stood out. Food samples were phenomenal, with the papusas really topping the list for me. Danny really cares about the local businesses here too as this is where he lives, and he makes it a point to cap tours to I think 10 visitors max, so as to not disrupt the local community with hoards of people. It seems that he has a great working relationship with all these spots, and on multiple occasions I've seen him tip them and thank them for being a part of his tour._br/_ I strongly recommend checking out Spade and Palacio tours, as you will not be disappointed. I'm proud to say these guys should be listed as the 1 thing to do in Montreal. Thanks Danny!! _br/_ -Adam and Laura New Hampshire
