Berchtesgaden and Eagle's Nest Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

Embark on a guided tour of Berchtesgaden, Hitler's mountain retreat and the southern headquarters of the Nazi party on a full day coach trip from Munich. Eagle's Nest is a mountain top lodge built by the Nazis, and is a fascinating sight of historical significance. Located at 6,148 feet (1,834 meters) on top of Mt Kehlstein, the lodge has some of Germany's most amazing views of the Alps mountain range. Ironically, Hitler suffered from vertigo and rarely took pleasure in the views.

Due to the World War II bombings by the Royal Air Force, there is little evidence left of Hitler and the Nazi party's presence, however Eagle's Nest still stands.

From mid May to October, you will have the option to take a bus ride up the mountain to see Eagle's Nest for yourself. The last 390 feet (120 meters) of the trip is in a brass-clad elevator. During the winter months or during inclement weather when access to Eagle's Nest is restricted, you will instead visit the world famous Salt Mines. Wearing traditional mining gear you will descend into the depths of the mine where you can see glowing salt grottoes and a subterranean salt lake.

This tour was absolutely magnificent! Ursula was on of the most knowledgeable and impressive tour guides weve ever had. She provided us with a running commentary both to and from Berchtesgaden, which felt as if we were given a bonus driving tour of Munich and the beautiful German countryside! When we arrived at the Eagles Nest, the weather wasnt great. But, we are convinced her positive energy forced the clouds to part so we could have periods of beautiful views. Ursula did go abound and beyond when she brought us on a short hike through the woods to see the remains of the Residence Farm House. There, she delivered a heartfelt presentation not the impact of the war to Germany. We understand this topic is a very sensitive one to German, but we were particularly impressed with her ability to give perspective in such a heartfelt and genuine way. To top off a truly remarkable day, she recommended we visited a nearby Augustine Biergarten - the oldest in Munich. This ended up being one of our favorite experiences! Such a great recommendation. Overall, this tour was well timed, well excecuted, and SUPERBLY guided by Ursula. Highly recommend his experience for anyone visiting Munich.

Wasted our money , they did not tell us the eagles nest was closed, gave a tour of the salt mines for another 17 euros, unfair

Is a wonderful day trip from Munich. My Tour guide was galloping with joy... as she mentioned that this was her very first time, after few years as a Guide, where the sky was amazing clear 2-3km upon reaching the mountain-foot. Breath-taking sight on the way up with a Special bus... and Wow!, the view was amazingly fantastic.......up there! Have a good walking shoe and SLR camera with U. Such a beautiful scenes.....

For a first time visit this was fine...........but would go by myself next time now I know how to get there. I wasn't aware that the bus actually had two tour groups on it meaning a detour along the way which probably added an hour / hour and a half to the travelling time. Would have preferred more time up at the Eagles Nest but seemed to be a little hurried to get return bus down and then we had an abundance of time at Berchtesgaden which wasn't necessary guide seemed to want us to eat at the restaurant there instead of the one up at the Eagles Nest. All in all was worth the money and a good way to see for a first timer. Just would have preferred more time at the Eagles Nest rather than the detour / too much time at Berchtesgaden.

This was a really nice trip and I am glad we did it, but a few things were below expectation. The food at the base area at Berchtesgaden was less than wonderful. We spent a long time waiting there after adequate time on top - putting us behind schedule and probably causing us to skip a stop on the return trip. But it is a pleasant day's drive through beautiful countryside - with amazing visibility of the government's impact on eliminating fossil fuel and nuclear energy plants - evidenced by the large number of solar panels on old barns. Well done Germany!

Believe it nor not, but it snowed on the day I went on this trip May. According to the tour guide, the roads were too iced to go to the Eagle's Nest, so we went to a salt mine in Berchtesgaden. This was a VERY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. Felt like I guest wasted a day.

We saw the magnificient views as with good luck we had an excellent sunny weather and warm as well since it was not windy. But all this really depends on the weather for this site. Views are sometimes hidden to fog and in windy weather it could also be quite cold. So crossing your fingers if you aim there.

Very interesting tour. I looked into getting there on our own and without a car it seemed difficult. It was very foggy so not great views that day but Still able to walk around on trails. Lots of info in documentation center.

Beautiful scenery, but the Eagle's Nest is boring. Not worth it.

Very interesting day trip. Our tour guide had very interesting facts about the area, the history and the destination. Only shame was when we were at the top of the Eagle's Nest there was fog and we couldn't enjoy the amazing views. If you are interested in WW2 history and German politics at the time its worth doing this tour.

The Eagles Nest part of the tour was terrific and totally recommended. From the picturesque scenery that you see on the bus trip through to the breathtaking views experienced once you reach the peak. This is truly amazing and well worthwhile if you have a day with excellent weather which we were fortunate enough to.

It is just a tea house but still very worth the drive out for the view. After you have been up, you go back to where the bus awaits and you can visit Hitler's Bunker.

The views during the drive were spectacular as was the Eagles nest itself! The bus was too hot though, the outside temps were higher than normal....the trip itself we highly recommend!

The tour was well planned and coordinated. Our tour guide was very hospitable and knowledgable. Our bus driver maneuvered around tight corners and drove very safely. It would have been a great trip if the weather would have been more accommodating, but that's nature. All in all, a very informative and worthwhile trip.

This trip was one of the highlights of our stay in Munich. The scenery was beautiful and the sites were very interesting. I am fascinated with WWII history and to see the sites was amazing. Be sure to see the underground bunkers at the documentation center. We had lunch at the restaurant by the documentation center and it was the best meal I had while I was in Germany.

We had a most scenic and memorable day at Berchtesgaden and Eagle's Nest. Elizabeth was our tour guide for a second time, enthusiastically sharing with us historical and geographical information about her native Germany during our bus rides out and back. In addition, she also passed around an album of photos taken during the construction and occupancy of Hitler's Eagle's Nest, and on the return trip she showed us a video. The ride up Mt. Kehlstein provided breathtaking views, and although the road is extremely narrow and winding, these Gray Line bus drivers are excellent, so you can feel safe and secure as you relax and take in the beautiful scenery far below. Eagle's Nest itself was most impressive, giving one the feeling of being at the top of the world. We enjoyed some delicious food in the restaurant there, and we also learned a lot by visiting the Documentation Center at the stop on the way down. This tour combines both the beauty of the Bavarian Alps with the history of Berchtesgaden and Eagle's Nest, and unless you suffer from severe acrophobia, I would highly recommend it.

We had an excellent guide Elizabeth who worked hard all day giving us historical information and fact. It was very well organised ,went like clockwork yet was very relaxed. We had gorgeous weather which made for a stunning trip. Lived up to expectations.

This was an extremely well organized tour led by Ursula and Simone the driver. Everything was handled in advance making the journey more enjoyable. The guides excellent and detailed descriptions of the sights brought depth to the experience. Booking and instructions were super-simple to follow. If all trips are like this with Viator, then definitely go. As for the location, the sights speak for themselves. Highly recommended.

A few things made this tour difficult - the roadworks where we were to catch the tour bus made it very confusing and even other tour guides were not able to direct us in the right direction. No toilet paper on the bus was an inconvenience. The tour guide delivered information to the tour but did not engage with his guests. Bus driver was very skilled at manoeuvring the very narrow roads - we felt safe. Eagles Nest was awesome as was Berchtesgaden. Would love to have had more time here. Would never have found our way on our own.

This was a very interesting tour given the role that this site played in the Nazi movement. The setting of Berchtesgaden and the Eagle Nest is stunning. If you do this tour make sure you visit the documentation centre and the underground bunker system in the documentation centre. The bus trip back to Munich through alpine forests and mountains was very beautiful.

Overall really appreciated the experience. The guide Ursula was very knowledgeable and organised._br/_ What I could not understand is why we had lunch at Obersalsburg which had very little to offer at present in lieu of theBerchtesgaden which appeared to have so many more options and much more to see.

Unfortunately, we were unable to climb up and actually see Eagle's Nest because of the weather - it had snowed the week prior and they were waiting until mid-May to open that up. However, the tour was still worthy of 5 stars! Berchtesgaden is a lovely little town, filled with shops, restaurants and is a town which contains a lot of history. What really made this tour a hit was the Tour Guide, Ursula. She is a wonderful tour guide! She is extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter and has a voice ..... that makes her quite the story teller. She speaks during most of the bus ride to and from the tour. She also interacts with all the guests being sure that no one is left out. Kudos to you Ursula!!

The beauty of the Alps is over shadowed by the solemness of the history. The walk through the bunker tunnel to the grand elevator gives an eerie feeling. Don't miss the museum picture collection least we forget the bigotry and ruthlessness of Hitler and what can happen when a sociopath is voted into power.

It was cold and rainy the day we went. We couldn't see anything from the Eagle's Nest. They took us to Berchtesgaden as well, but again it was cold and rainy and we didn't feel much like walking around. I feel like we wasted a day on this trip. I would suggest just driving to the Eagle's Nest yourself if it is a nice day because it is not worth it if the weather is bad. They should just cancel this tour if it is inclement weather. The tour guide did do a nice job of explaining the history and some other facts amount Munich.
