Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site Tour from Munich by Train

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site Tour from Munich by Train

Munich, Germany

Venture out of Munich by local transport for a comprehensive tour through Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. An authorized guide will share important information concerning the survivors who'd been imprisoned in Dachau throughout the course of World War II. Today, Dachau is a place of memory, pilgrimage and education, and makes for an illuminating day trip from Munich.

Join up with your guide and group at Munich Central Train Station (Hauptbahnhof), and then travel by train and bus (transport costs included) to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, just under an hour away.

Outside the town of Dachau, a memorial site stands on the grounds of the former concentration camp. Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp in Germany during the Holocaust, and it was the originator and training ground for the vast order of brutality that spread over half of Europe in the wake of the armies of the Third Reich, and which ultimately culminated in history's greatest crime.

On this half-day tour, you'll spend around three hours exploring the memorial site with your guide. Tour the exhibition center and former compound, and learn about the history of Dachau, World War II, and the Holocaust. See reconstructed barracks, guard houses, cells, crematorium, and administration headquarters, and take a moment to reflect at the site's memorials.

While each camp was responsible for its own particular form of barbarism, what distinguished Dachau is that almost everything that happened in the system as a whole happened at some level there. Almost every category of victim passed through its Arbeit Macht Frei (Work Sets You Free) gate, including German dissidents, outspoken clergymen, Jehovah's Witnesses, gay men, Jewish people and Polish citizens. Today's memorial site combines the historical authenticity of the original environment and its many surviving buildings with the function of a modern exhibition center. It is a place of memory, of pilgrimage and of education.

After your visit, your guide will accompany you back to Munich, where your tour concludes at the original departure point.

Very good tour. Hopped on a bus which took us through the residential areas leading to Dachau. Once inside, our guide took us from place to place explaining what happened in each area. The stories were taken from first hand accounts of people who were there at the time. After a couple of hours we were given time to explore the remainder of the camp on our own. Very informative and our guide did an excellent job.

The Dachau Camp site is easily reachable via public transportation. We opted for the tour because we have had very good luck with guides enhancing our understanding. However, while our guide was very knowledgable, he talked for almost 2.5 hours straight. In my opinion, this site--and others like it--should be introduced and key points highlighted by the guide but individuals need time to reflect on what they are seeing and what occurred. If you want a guide who will talk through your experience, this is a great tour. If you want time to actually visit the museum and other parts of the memorial, and contemplate the site on a personal level, save your money, take public transport and skip this tour.

This is a late review, but better late than never... I was in Munich April Easter time of 2017. I had been to Munich before but missed Dachau so it was a must on this trip. No matter what anyone says, tt's a very sobering experience so if you go to Munich, do not miss Dachau. It's just outside of town and you meet as a group at the train station first to travel there and back. I actually went to the Nazi Museum in Munich which is also amazing - spend hours there if you can the day before, which was a great decision - it helped in processing the Dachau visit. We had a great tour guide - very knowledgable. He even recommended some places for lunch in Munich. Take this tour - it's completely worth the experience and price.

Absolutely fantastic tour. The Tour guide ?craig the magician chap anyway was fantastic. Knowledgeable, well spoken and had a dynamic view of the history of the site and the relevance of the lessons we should have learnt today.

Tour guide was very informative and knew when to be solemn. It would have been helpful if the place wasn't so crowded and loud with other groups because at times it was difficult to hear what he had to say over the noise.

Our recent trip to the Dachau Concentration Camp was enlightening and educational. Our guide Ky was an incredible source of knowledge, and his passion greatly added to the experience. This tour is a must in order to fully understand the torment and torture of the victims of Hitler's regime.

It was convenient to get to the site, but the guide didn't seem like he wanted to be there - went through the motions. either risk getting a better, more energetic guide or I would recommend that you find your way to the site on your own and do a self-guided tour.

Our tour guide Achim was outstanding.. Very knowledgeable on the subject matter and the Third Reich period. He gave a thorough yet relatively fast-paced tour which took approx. 2 hours. I came away learning a great deal about the Camp, the period of history and about how these things impact current events. Overall 5 stars for sure.. Highly recommend.

The tour is incredible, a lot of information in such a touching place. BTW I think it could take more time there so we could have more freetime to read tags and deep dive the history. The guide basically knows everything about everything. I'm glad I did this tour.

Marc was our tour guide and he was FULL of information. The tour was 3-4 hours and he provided us with a very detailed tour of the Memorial Site. We were able to glean insight into the times and learn how the camp was run and how it was used following the SS rule.

One should not visit Munich and not take this tour. It is a part of history that we should never forget. Dachau was a concentration camp - not an extermination camp set up in 1933, shortly after Hitler assumed power . Originally the people sent there were Communists and other political opponents of the NAZI regime. They were sent there for reeducation - an abusive and often fatal sentence. However the types of prisoners grew and soon anyone voicing opposition to the Nazis, or people the Nazi's did not like - including the Bavarian royal family, prominent clergy, resistance fighters, etc. I strongly recommend this tour for my fellow Americans to see how easily freedom can evaporate and abusive power can take over.

Great tour. Very powerful and an important experience to teach you about compassion and human history. Mark was our tour guide and I HIGHLY recommend Mark. His English is great, he is very informative and knowledgeable. Even though this memorial site is rightfully solemn, Mark managed to make it a fun tour while also instilling a deep sense of respect and seriousness towards this beautiful memorial site. One thing to note, the tour was a little long. It is a lot of walking so be prepared to be a little worn out. It is important to read here that this is not a tour for lots of photo opportunities. You are allowed to take photos but its just not the kind of place to take a lot of videos and photos and still be respectful. Overall, great experience. Thank you Mark.

From when the group met at the Munich Train Station, our guide was fantastic! Every available minute she filled in details from the inception of concentration camps to the eventual collapse of the Third Reich, even on the 20 minute train trip on a superbly quiet and smooth train to Dachau. Her knowledge made the trip just so interesting. Five stars for the guide!

Our day trip to Dachau was overwhelming emotionally--but the very knowledgeable guide had a way of explaining the history that was helpful as we walked through all the sections of this awful place. We do need to remember, to keep a memorial. The museum sections were just as disturbing as the actual camp. It was helpful to travel to Dachau with a small group and a kind guide. He answered a wide variety of questions.

Great tour! I was disappointed that the guide wanted to get us all back to Munich. That meant we wouldnt see the museum. I stayed on my own, and had to pay for my bus and train back to Munich which should not have happened so I could see the museum. That was a valuable experience that I would have missed if I had gone back with the guide.

Tour was well done for a difficult period of history. The guide was very knowledgeable. It would have been helpful if the guide had a flag so we could follow her through the train station - it was crowded and one could have easily gotten separated from her. At Dachau personal headsets would have been helpful as it was crowded and difficult to hear everything the guide was saying.

Very well done. Our guide, Craig, explained how the camp started in 1933 and changed with further radical developments in 1938 as WW II commenced. He did not shy away from the horror that existed and dealt with the information in a direct yet thoughtful fashion. Everyone should take such a tour to ensure nothing like this ever happens again and to prevent history from repeating itself.

Was joining this tour after flying in early miring from Paris. Had allowed plenty of time to get from the airport to Munich central train station where the tour commenced. However did not envisage a two hour delay in arriving at Munich Airpirt because of fog. As it turned out, arrived at the airport the same time the tour was departing. Contacted the local provider who advised they could rebook us the next day, could take thus offer up as was flying out of Munich that nigh. So no option but yo abandon the tour. The rep made it clear we wouldn't be getting a refund.
