Romantic Road, Rothenburg, and Harburg Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

Surround yourself with castles and medieval villages as you travel along the Romantic Road during a full day escorted tour from Munich to Harburg and Rothenburg. There's plenty of free time at each stop, so there's plenty of time for lunch and exploring at your own leisurely pace.

Your first stop is Harburg, one of the oldest, largest and best preserved castles of Southern Germany. It was an important military stronghold during the 11th and 12th centuries. Through the Swabian crater landscape passing Dinkelsbuhl, you will arrive in Rothenburg, a preserved medieval town in Europe. Spend about three hours in Rothenburg, with plenty of time for sightseeing, lunch, and shopping.

A popular attraction is the Kathe Wolhfahrt Christmas Store on Herrngasse, a large store open year round where you can purchase ornaments, nutcrackers, and other Christmas items. Many of the highlights in Rothenburg are centered around Marktplatz, such as the Town Hall with its Rothenburg History Museum, and St Jakob's Church, a Gothic building with soaring ceilings filled with light.

You will return to Munich via the Hallertau, the world's largest hop-growing area.

We were very disappointed to learn, while on the tour, that shops in Rothenburg would be closed when we visit. This was known before we booked. Nothing was mentioned during the booking process, nor before we boarded the tour bus. We wrote Viator and they said they would compensate us for this._br/_ Harburg Castle was just OK._br/_ Excellent service from Viator.

Rothenburg is beautiful, Harburg is a little boring though and the travelling is a bit tiring.

There's nothing romantic about the road, but if you've never been to Rothenberg or Harburg, go.

For some reason this tour was on one of Gray Line's luxury buses - the seats were really quite nice, maybe half as many seats as you normally find on these buses. Even though each seat was taken, it was relaxing. The guide was just OK, but we were only really paying for the transportation which was cheaper than a private car to Rothenburg. As other reviewers have noted, Rothenburg itself is exactly what you would expect when you think fairy tale. But there wasn't any sign of real people living there, everything is set up for tourists. We ate at the Chinese restaurant !, it was actually pretty good.

Christmas shops dominate the town. Guide provided lots of information on the bus ride to and from. Visit to Harburg castle was well worth the trip and the walk along the wall in Rothenburg gave you great views.

Enjoyed the tour immensely. Very well organized, very knowledgeable guide. In both Harburg Castle and Rothenburg, you are immersed in history. Very picturesque. There was enough time to explore Rothenburg. I especially enjoyed climbing and walking on the city wall that goes around the city. If you go there, make sure you try Schneeballen Snowball, a local dessert. Highly recommend the tour.

Harburg Castle was amazing. Well worth the stop. Rothenburg was very interesting. There was a lot to see and do. We could have spent more time in Rothenburg. The torture museum alone could take a day. Our tour guide Barbara did a wonderful job taking care of us and making sure we knew all the insider spots to see, what to eat, etc. Definitely a tour worth taking.

This was a lovely tour - I do wish we'd gotten a bit more historical background information from the guide, but she was quite knowledgable about great things to do in Rothenburg. We had a great time!

Loved Rothenburg, but really would have been nice to have more time to walk around. We did catch lunch in a small cafe, food was delicious. Only got to the Christmas store. Wasnt expecting so much travel time though. Harburg Castle was cool, but there was one very steep set of stairs to climb. Two of my traveling group were not able continue with the tour. They were able to sit in on part of the church ceremony going on at the same time.

This tour was perfect. We all met at 8:30 near Munich's train station, and the location was easy to find with a lot of tour buses going to different places. Monika, our tour guide, was informative, helpful, and cheerful all day. She made sure we all knew where to be and when and answered everyone's questions. We first stopped for a tour of Harburg Castle, which is so well-preserved that it could be a movie set. The castle tour guide was succinct and direct, as one might expect in Germany, pointing out various features on how the castle would have defended itself in the event, it was never attacked. She also illustrated that while the time period and the road is Romantic, everyday life in that time period was anything but. Our next stop was 3 hours in Rothenburg: picture a stereotypical German village town and that's Rothenburg. Some people scaled the city walls you can walk the full length in 2 hours, or parts as you wish, some visited the Christmas museum, some went to the numerous churches, some shopped and ate the decadent and messy Schnellballen treats, and we checked out the excellent Criminal Museum museum on torture. In retrospect, we would have skipped the hour we spent eating lunch and just grabbed something to go to eat on the bus ride back, as it left us with that much less time in Rothenburg. We got back to Munich at 6:30pm, exactly as advertised. They sell drinks on the bus so bring a few euros for that, as well as spending money in Rothenburg. Highly recommend!

Quite a distance by bus from Munich however, the end result is certainly well worth the drive. Rothenburg is a very charming and enjoyable old town experience. On this trip you get to spend 3 hours of free time and believe me, this time frame disappears quickly. You could actually stay at one of the hotels and spend a couple of days in this town if both time and your itinerary allowed it.

A fair distance from Munich by bus but certainly well worth the ride!_br/_ You get the opportunity to spend 3 hours in the old town of Rothenburg and we found that this time frame goes by very quickly - there is so much to see and experience.

Great tour! The visit to Harburg castle was interesting, and the town of Rothenburg was simply charming! It was rainy and cloudy on the trip there, but the sun came out as soon as we got to Rothenburg. I would recommend just grabbing a quick bite to eat- we found a small café that had pizza that was quick- so we could spend the time walking around the town. We only had about 2 1/2 hours to spend, which was enough to walk around and go in a few shops. Try the snowballs- they were a delicious treat! Our tour guide, Monika, was very informative.

Rothenburg was fantastic one of the most beautiful places i have ever been too. Loads to see and do . I love Christmas and the Christmas shop is open all year round. I would Rather have gone straight Rothenburg instead of stopping off at Harburg Castle, I found this part of the tour very rushed and pointless .

The tour was beautiful and special, and our tour guide, Caroline, made the tour that much more enjoyable. She knew her subjects and made her presentation factual, as well as enjoyable. Lots of fun for myself and my wife. Great tour!!!

Very beautiful tour, Rothenburg is a real fairytale town, Harburg castle was amazing too, very good guide, but 3 hours at Rothenburg were not enough to me in order to explore well this amazing town.

Tour guide was great. Rothenburg was very pretty and pristine. It was rebuilt after WWII so if you're expecting a real Midieval village, this looks brand new it's pretty and very clean.

The visit to Harburg castle and to Rothenburg was wonderful. But the bus ride is very long. One ride at 1.5 hours, one ride at 1.75 hours, and one ride at almost 3 hours. That puts most of the day on the bus and not at the cities. Our tour guide, Carolina, was very knowledgeable and gave us interesting history facts during the bus ride.

Romantic road was just a huge road you drive on nothing special._br/_ The castle beautiful but boring. They slog you an enterence fee on the bus 8 euro but when you walk past the enterence they have a sign 3 euro to enter. Mmmm

Our tour to Rothenburg was generally very good. It is a long day, but we enjoyed it. The guide was excellent and the bus was very comfortable. The town is very touristy, but pretty with good shopping and lots of history. I'm glad we went and would recommend it. If the weather is hot, the town is hotter, so be prepared.

The guide was informative during the bus ride. The stop at Harburg Castle was very nice, a well preserved castle. It broke up the length of the drive. There was so much too see in Rothenburg. The walk from the bus to town center our guide discussed the area along the way. We were there during Rothenburg's independence celebrations so the town was crowded with locals in costume but it was fun to observe. Rothenburg is a beautiful medieval town, so well preserved. Our guide did a good job in giving us the lay of the land. We had three hours for lunch, shopping and enjoying. Our guide also provided us with nice maps, including one of the Romantic road. Wish it could have been longer, maybe another trip. I would definitely recommend this day trip from Munich.

Lovely day out. We loved it here, too much to see and do in the one place. _br/_ A great must do. Lots of walking but well worth it ._br/_ This place is gorgeous we sat and had a lovely lunch in a little pub, it was a awesome experience

I love Rothenburg, and couldn't wait to see it again with my niece. Was so disappointed that the tour was only offered on Wednesday which we couldn't do and Sunday when almost everything is closed in town. It was like touring a ghost town, even the church doors were locked! You could wander the streets and eat in a cafe, but nothing else was available. Why would you offer a tour on a day the city is essentially closed?_br/_ Our tour guide Barbara was awful!! Ruined the bus ride for everyone we spoke with afterward. She would not stop talking, but wasn't really saying anything either. She was a very nice person, but a terrible speaker on the microphone.

We had so much fun on this tour! The coach ride can be a bit daunting I was feeling sick that day but honestly our guide made the drive much better. She was constantly giving us information along the 3 hour drive. Rothenburg and Harburg are so exquisite that we plan to return. Highly recommend!

We really enjoyed the trip, my only complaint was that some of the stops were rushed. Lunch time was very limited. Tour guide was really nice but a long drive with very little else.

Had a great time on this tour, with enough time at both stops. Rothenburg is amazing and truly would like to come back and spend a couple days, but we had a solid 3 hours of time to walk around on this tour and it's a good intro to the town. The only caution I would add is that I went on a Sunday and, by law, stores are closed on Sundays in Germany, so I wasn't able to go into any of the amazing looking shops. On the other hand, it wasn't very crowded.

Great tour! _br/_ Time in Rothenburg a little bit short though. _br/_ 4-5 hours would have been perfect especially since majority of time has been spent on coach.

Everything went like clockwork. Our guide was upbeat and friendly. My only suggestion would be regarding the commentary onboard the bus. It sounded like the guide was reading from a script or history book which got a little boring. The commentary should be more relaxed and natural. I think the price was a little expensive just for a bus ride seeing we had to pay for entrance to the castle onboard the bus. However, it was a good tour and both places were definitely worth visiting.

Overall we had a great time. The tour guide is informative, both Rothenburg and Harburg part of tour are nice with enough free time in Rothenburg to walk around. However I feel the Romantic Road part of title is misleading as almost all the driving is on the highway.
