Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Day Tour from Munich

Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

King Ludwig II built two of his dream castles, Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, hidden away in the Bavarian mountains. This trip from Munich shows you both of these extraordinary castles, the legacy of Bavaria's fairy-tale king. Capture the grandeur of these castles and the picturesque mountain scenery of Bavaria in one magical day.

Departing Munich, visit the smallest of three royal castles, Linderhof, which was built by King Ludwig II during the 19th century as a hunting lodge. Built in French Rococo style, the castle has a Moorish pavilion which can be visited during your one hour stay. You have the option to join a guided tour of the interior of Linderhof.

After departing Linderhof, you will have a short shopping stop in Oberammergau, world-famous for its woodcarvers, richly painted houses (Luftl-paintings) and Passion Play.

On the approach to Neuschwanstein, it will quickly become clear as to why this magnificent neo-Romanesque style castle is the most well known castle in the world. It appears through the mist like something out of a fairytale, and you will not be surprised to hear that the man who conceived its design - King Ludwig II, was considered quite eccentric. If it all seems very familiar, it may be because the castle was the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle.

You will stop in Hohenschwangau, a small town at the feet of the castle, where you'll have 4 hours at disposal for lunch and to explore the grounds of Neuschwanstein. You'll also have the option of joining a guided tour of the interior of the castles if you wish.

If you go to Munich you most take this tour, great experience! Stunning castles and the beautiful village of Oberammergau where is located the house of Hansel and Gretel. Very friendly staff and you can take it in your languagge.

I went here with my family just a couple of days ago and it was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had! The tour was super organized and neat, and our guide was super informative and kind. You will learn a lot of history about the castle and the king and you’ll see so many breathtaking sights, but be prepared for a lot of walking. At the Neuschwansteinstein castle you can take a bus or horse carriage the quarters up and walk fifteen minutes, so that’s just a little pointer. The bridge where you can see the view is pretty crowded, so be patient and you’ll get an amazing picture because it’ll clear up eventually. You have plenty of time to catch a bite for lunch in the village and the walk to Lake Alpsee is super short and pleasant. I definitely recommend this trip to anyone, and it’s also very family friendly :)

Would not recommend this trip. Either go on your own so you have enough time to see all the castles or skip it. Neuschwanstein castle, I was returning after being there 20 years ago and was disappointed in how commercialized it has become. Felt like cattle herded through. AND it would have been nice to know that it was under construction and the essence of the rooms would be covered due to construction and only seen by small photographs posted. LInderhof was very rushed with no time to see the area or appreciate even going there. Could have skipped the town trip to see both castles at the Neuschwanstein location.Sorry not happy at all.

Exptremely well done tour. Great use of time visiting three sites and having plenty of time at the castle. I would highly recommend this tour. Bus accommodations were so comfortable and well planned for everyone to sit with their party.

I've been to both places a couple times each in the 80s. These were watered down somewhat but still interesting._br/_ Neuschwanstein requires a good deal of walking. The weather was marginal, overcast. This place should not be missed when in southern Germany. Ursula, our tour guide, was interesting, knowledgeable and her English was excellent._br/_ Also stopped in Oberammergau. Not enough time to really enjoy the place._br/_ Easy to find pick up and drop off location directly in front of the train station.

This is another tour we want to do again. So nice. Lucy was amazing guide. Highly recommended. If you are in Munich for a short time and mingle with royals, this is the way to do it.

This day was number one for us. Our tour guide Christine was fantastic giving us all the necessary information and managing tour tickets well. We arrived at the meeting point 30 minutes early and due to many tours going that day once a bus was full they left. Our bus driver was great._br/_ The inside castle tours were not included in the price so bring some cash if you wish to do them. 25 pp Both castles are well worth it but also require lots of walking and stairs. Some people on our tour chose not to take the tours but still enjoyed viewing the castles._br/_ Our first stop was Linderhof castle and we were given time before our tour to look around the garden. A 40minute stop at Oberammergau for a quick. Look around and the chance to buy a snack for us really wasnt long enough but we understand to fit it all in this is all the time allowed. The highlight is Neuschwanstein castle which really is a fairytale castle. We had time to look around and get ourselves to the top ready for our tour. We took the shuttle bus to the top to make it a bit easier as it is very steep. The shuttle bus drivers cram them into the buses and dont drive overly carefully..... the view from the bridge of the castle is worth seeing but often there is a big line up to do so so do it as soon as you get off the shuttle bus._br/_ The tours inside the castles were fascinating and worth doing if you can._br/_ On the way back to Munich we all sat back and relaxed after a busy 10hours day.

Our day happened to fall on a national Holiday something similar to Labor day or Memorial day here. We encountered a heavy traffic on the autobahn and got to both locations late! Basically got rushed through both venues. That said, both spots were most beautiful and memorable.

This tour was great! A full day of seeing castles and beautiful landscapes! This was a great way to see some of Ludwig's famous structures without having to worry about waiting in line for tickets or the transportation to get there!

Stunning castle. Nice coach ride stopping in a few locations for wandering/exploring. The castle was fantastic and a nice hike up to it for the fitter people or horse drawn carriage for the rest. Only downside was the weather but what can you do. Recommended

This tour far exceeded our expectations. Comfortable coach ride. Beautiful scenery along the way. A huge bonus was the snow which made the day even more magical. And two absolutely stunning Castles to explore. Loved it.

My husband and I loved, loved this trip. We are in our early forties and we are active people- let me tell you that you need to believe people when they say there is a steep walk! So worth it! Also- we went inside the castle and I would highly recommend doing that. I mean, do you want to walk all that way up the hill and not even go inside!!!

We had a brand new bus, which was very nice but our tour guide was awful. It was her first day, so I feel badly being so harsh, but she could barely keep her train of thought so it was unclear if she was having trouble translating her thoughts to English or if she honestly knows nothing about the history that she was sharing with us. She did have a supervisor experienced tour guide with her who had to jump in and help at the end honestly, I wish she had jumped in sooner so that we could have learned something before actually visiting the castles instead of learning them on the way home. That said, the castles themselves were wonderful and the surrounding landscape was breathtaking. It is absolutely a trip you should take, but if you're brave enough, you may want to drive to them on your own so that you can pace yourself. But, it was great to have a bus to just handle driving you there, purchasing tickets, keeping time, etc. The city of Oberammergau was charming, but is a total tourist trap and you don't have long enough to sit and get a drink we would have rather had more time at Neuschwanstein than stopping there. But overall, nice bus, stress-free and an absolutely beautiful place to visit. Glad we went just unfortunate that we had a new tour guide. But I guess, she had to learn sometime - just too bad it was on us.

Loved this tour! It was great, the guide wasn't that great. Both castles offer guided tours from their own staff so you're paying for the transportation cost basically. This and convenience alone was totally worth it.

The bus departure point requires more instructions re how to get there from the railway station. We arrived 15 minutes early and one of our group needed to use the bathroom. The rest of our group waited on board. Even though the guide knew our friend was in the bathroom the bus started to depart anyway - 5 minutes prior to schedule and we had to tell them to stop the bus!

A really great tour of some of the most beautiful castles in Germany! I loved the stop at Linderhof and the tour inside. Neuschwanstein Castle is too incredible for words. Be aware that you can't take photos inside either of the castles which I wasn't fully aware of. My only recommendation to the tour guide would be to let the participants know about the rope bridge located behind Neuschwanstein. I only knew of this bridge from doing research before taking the tour. It's easy to miss if you don't know about it as it's located on the complete opposite side of the entrance to the castle. Budget at least 45 minutes to walk up the very steep path to the bridge, which is tiresome after the already steep climb up to the entrance of the castle. The views from the bridge are INCREDIBLE. No one else on my tour seemed to have known about the bridge and were disappointed that there wasn't enough time after the tour inside the castle to make it to the bridge. Other than that, the bus was comfortable and the on board drinks for purchase were appreciated. The tour guide was a great narrator and gave plenty of insight into the areas that we passed and Munich itself. You won't be disappointed!

This was a very nice tour from Linderhof to Oberammergau to Neuschwanstein. Beautiful scenery, interesting history, and truly a great experience - especially during the wintertime, with all the snow!

Not warned about the large number steps at Neuschwanstein. Bus left without us. Long lines for the carriage back to the bus.

Good tour but a bit deceiving. Never was there mention that in the winter there is a 1-mile uphill climb to Neuschwanstein in the snow and ice. Linderhof was a do-able trek, and well worth the trip, and the too-brief stop in Oberammergau was nice - would have liked to have had more time in that enchanting town where the best prices are as well on gifts and souvenirs!. But if you don't trek up the mountain to the Neuschwanstein Castle you are stuck in a small area with overpriced souvenir shops for four hours. It was a beautiful drive, and the tour guide was very informative - but if you do this tour - get ready for some heavy-duty walking!

Tour was really well organised, we just thought the castles were a bit of a non-event. The highlights of the day for us was the scenery on the drive and stopping at the little village to shop and get coffee. At the castles, we felt shoved through like cattle. Thankfully, we only spent €24.

Our tour guide Carolina is the reason I didn't give this tour 5 stars. She was disrespectful with other passengers, even saying with an eye roll and irritated voice "Jesus Christ I've told you what time the tour starts 5 times." For us it was a 5-star itinerary and a 2-star tour guide.

Very organised and awesome views. Neuschwanstein castle not very accessible if you suffer from hip or knee problems. One of us did not make it to the castle. Full marks for the driver, Joseph. Good job. Our guild was very informative.

Cold day but a great day. Tips 1. No food allowed on the bus. Eat before you arrive. 2. If traveling with others on a separate reservation, arrive together and board together. 3. Take headphones for the castle tour. 4 Bridge was closed but many hopped the fences and was worth it.

Great tour and guide! The only change we would like to suggest is to not stop in the village for 50 minutes, and instead, give people a little longer time to enjoy Neuschwanstein as we felt rushed while there.

Be prepared to do a LOT of walking! Up and down hillsmountains and steps inside castles. No easy way around it, very hard on knees, back and legs. But all worth it in the end.

Overall, a very well organized, nice tour. The tour guide was very good in that she gave us information about the castle, King Ludwig II, as well as more contemporary tidbits. She had the info regarding the horse carriage rides and where to get food before our visit to Neuschwanstein Castle. She also gave us suggestions as to other places to visit in Munich on our way back to Munich. The tours of the castles, Neushwanstein and Linderhof were both very good. I also enjoyed our visit to the town of Oberammergao, although it was too short. Where I took off one star is for the tour guide trying to move a single person to another seat in order to accomodate a couple who was the last to arrive. The single person refused to move because she wanted a window seat and said she came early in order to secure a good seat. I don't think a person should be asked to move directly. The tour guide can ask for volunteers, but it is unfair to the person who arrives early to have to move to a less favorable seat. The other problem was when the tour guide was explaining where to walk to get to the castle and she referred to a map that she had given out. Some of us on the bus did not get a map because apparently, she had ran out of maps. It would have been helpful if she had mentioned that she is aware that some of us have no maps and that she ran out of maps and let us know that she will get some more maps at the next stop. Just little reassurances would be helpful.

Neuschwanstein was amazing and so beautiful to see. The story of the king was quite sad once you heard the truth of how he lived and what happened to him. Lucy our guide was great! She was very helpful and clear. Recommend going on this tour if you want to see an amazing castle.

A thoroughly enjoyable day seeing both Castles and a guided tour through both. A stop at village was also a wonderful surprise. Both Castles were amazing in their own right and the hall of mirrors in Linderhof was amazingly well done by the King. Neuschwanstein as it came into view was breathtaking and to top it all off it snowed! Winter wonderland! Both the driver and guide were friendly and informative. great day with or without snow.

This trip was amazing! I wasn't sure if I would be too interested in a castle tour, but the history and architecture seen in this tour was fantastic, and made me appreciate these types of tours. In addition, I really enjoyed listening to our tour guide. Job well done. I'm really glad I was able to do this tour.

I was in Munich for three days, but I am extremely happy for this one-day trip. I was on my own, the group was super nice and the tour guide very kind, she took care of me and she did not make me feel alone. The visit in the two castles were short and we were not allowed to take pictures, but it is not the tour's fault. The day went lovely and I'd love to come back. the atmosphere was simply magic!
