Salzburg Small Group Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

Take a day trip to the home town of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on a guided full-day rail tour from Munich to Salzburg. Considered one of the jewels in the crown of Europe, the city of Salzburg has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, framed by the majestic backdrop of the snow-capped Alps and famed for its old-world glamour.

Salzburg is also one of the most popular movie tourism destinations in the world for one simple reason, The Sound of Music. With a group of up to 25 people, you will see sights you'll remember from the silver screen. Salzburg is one of the finest preserved medieval old towns in Europe, criss-crossed with winding streets and venerable market places and adorned with architectural monuments of the later baroque era. Piazzas and fountains, the stunning Domkirche Cathedral, palaces, gardens, churches, monasteries, confectioneries and patisseries. And towering above it all, the breathtaking 900 year old fortress Festung Hohensalzburg, the magnificent edifice that dominates the city's skyline.

Your expert guide will bring you on a train ride from Munich to Austria and back again and put their knowledge of the city and what is best to see and do at your service. We'll provide you with a map and give you a 1.5-hour orientation tour through the major sites. You'll then have three hours to explore the city for yourself before the return journey. We have the inside knowledge of what to see and where to go and are dedicated to helping you experience the city by the most convenient and most efficient means.

The journey to Salzburg takes approximately two hours by train. Germany's rail system is world renowned and this journey to the Alps is no exception. Trains are clean, comfortable and equipped with washrooms. Feel free to walk around and chat to your fellow travelers as well as your guide, who can answer any questions about Munich and Bavaria.

May 2018 - This was a wonderful tour. Our guide Lucia was phenomenal. She was well versed in the history and landmarks of Salzburg. She was animated and extremely funny. We had plenty of time to walk around Salzburg and eat and experience the beautiful sights. Highly recommend.

Guide did not use a microphone...so basically missed 90 of what she was saying.

We just did the Dachau tour and were very impressed by it. Unfortunately our tour guide, Achim couldn't help himself and while we were riding the train back to Munich he decided to give his uneducated opinion about US politics. There were 3 of us on the tour who were Trump supporters and he made negative comments about our president. We were each going to tip him 1

Tour guide Iain is very knowledgeable and entertaining, with a wicked sense of humor. Radius Tours in Munich is the BEST tour company Ive ever seen. We were originally scheduled to take one tour through them, but were so impressed with the first one that we booked two more tours for our trip, and all were Excellent. The office is conveniently located in the Hauptbahnhof Station from which the tours depart and the girl in the office is super nice and helpful. Highly highly recommend.

This tour was fantastic. Our tour guide, Lucy, was absolutely wonderful. She is fluent in English, Spanish, German and the Austrian German dialect. In addition to being a tour guide, she is also a teacher, which was evident as she was a good storyteller, was sure to answer questions, and made sure to engage with everyone. She had interesting stories and historical references while touring us around the city to help us get the lay of the land. It was then wonderful to have a few hours alone to do what we wanted away from the group. Lucy had great recommendations for things to do both in Munich and during our free time in Austria. We took her advice and instead of going up to the castle, we went to the modern art museum and saw the most fantastic view of the city while enjoying a glass of wine. Absolutely great trip highly recommend!

Out tour guide was Maxine. she was organized, informative and helpful. We had a lovely day in Salzburg - although if you can, allow 2 days as there was much to see and we couldn't pack it all into one day.

The trip started out great and we made it onto the train and on time without any issues. The issues started once we got to Salzburg, the tour guide walked very fast in front of the group standing at 4ft 9in max and wearing all black without any marker to indicate where she was at different points. She marched along like an army general most of the time and could only be heard by people standing next to her. Her directives were often unclear and she publicly reprimand members of the group when her instructions or lack of where confusing. On the way back to the train, because of her style of walking way ahead of the group, she got on the bus and left 5 members of the group behind. She then decided to get off the bus and left 20 members on the bus to return for the 5 she neglected. She went back to get the 5 people and didn't see them because they took initiative to walk ahead. Fortunately for them, and her, they were able to make the train back to Munich with only seconds remaining. Luckily, as she had all of our tickets and had she missed the train, we would have had to find another way to pay. The city of Salzburg was extremely beautiful, the guide was very abrasive with me personally and managed to make me feel very uncomfortable in her dealings. I would definitely not go on another tour with this company because of her nasty attitude. I didn't appreciate the way I was treated on this tour.

Verena was an amazing tour guide! She was fun and knowledgeable about both Salzburg and Munich and was happy and willing to give advice. She made the day even more amazing than it already was thank you Verena!

Our tour guide was lovely, very informative. Great tour if you would like to cross the border but don't feel too at ease about doing it yourself it isn't hard. The guide goes through some things with you, and then you have lots of free time. We were glad that we only did Salzburg as a day trip. It was a beautiful place, but we didn't really feel like there was much else to keep us there.

Our tour guide, Lucy was fun, funny and informative. She gives you some interesting historical notes on the train ride, as well as some best practices of how to spend your time during the 3 hours you have on your own._br/_ You're dropped off on Makartplatz 4748'11.2N 1302'37.5E. Lucy walks the group past Mozart and Doppler's houses. She pointed out Café Sacher Salzburg which has a fantastic chocolate cake. We crossed Makartsteg bridge with all the love locks on it. From there we headed into the old town of Salzburg down Getreidegasse to Mozarts Geburtshaus birth house. You'll go by University Square 4747'58.2N 1302'36.6E where they sell wonderful sausages that you should come back to later. The tour with Lucy ended at Salzburg Cathedral, a baroque-style 17th-century cathedral 4747'51.5N 1302'47.3E. From there you have to pick where you want to spend the rest of your time. We went hunting for food and Sound of Music locations, many from our group went for food and then off to the modern art museum to see a birds-eye view of Salzburg while eating chocolate cake. I would recommend not heading straight back to the University Square immediately for lunch. You'll have to back track to get to the Sound of Music abbey 4747'44.5N 1303'04.3E. I'd suggest plotting out a course on the map with less overlap. 3 hours goes by so fast and you have to be back at the bus pickup to meet the guide before a final walk through a garden and palace used in Sound of Music. It was a beautiful town and deserves far more than a day trip. But if you have other places to be, this is a great way to see the city of Salzburg. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Verena, our guide, was absolutely captivating. She gave us marvelous information and recommendations, spent extra time with our group explaining things in Salzburg and listened to people's interests. The day was absolutely fantastic! The only thing I wish is that we had a longer time on our own in Salzburg. It would have been nice to return after 19:00 so that we had more time to walk to places and have relaxing supper first. I would definitely do this tour again, and well worth the money and time. Verena, our guide, really added to the fantastic experience!!! Thank you

Salzburg definitely worth a visit and the guide was very well informed and very good with giving information and preparing the group well. For a one day trip its definitely worth it. The trains are all taken care off, so no problem from start to end.

Lucia was a fantastic tour guide! On the train to Salzburg she explained what we would be seeing and drew maps for each of us for routes she would recommend. When we got to the city, she took us on a walking tour of the main areas and pointed out places she recommended and the most cost effective way to see everything. We used her suggestions and had a fantastic day and were able to see many things! The tour concluded with a Sound of Music walk pointing out highlights from the movie.

Things I appreciated: A quick tour -- and I mean blistering fast -- of various sights around Salzburg. Although I wasn't able to hear the guide most of the time, I was able to become oriented to the city so I knew where I wanted to go with my free time. I liked getting a sense for which train to catch and which bus to take - because although I liked this tour, it wasn't enough to really enjoy Salzburg. I returned the following weekend armed with the knowledge of how to get there, the city layout, and what I wanted to see. As an aside, our tour guide kind of downplayed the Fortress. I understand why - it's a hike and it would probably consume all of the free time you have in the city on this tour. But it's a must see. When I returned to Salzburg the following week, I thought it was incredible. Especially the platform atop the parapet that gives a view of the city. It was the highlight of the entire trip.

Well organized and easy travel both ways. Oreintation to Salzburg short but sweet. Provided enough information to make good use of considerable free time. Not much of a sound of music tour if that's what one is looking to do

We had a great day trip from Munich to Salzburg. Our group size was about 15. The guide was very knowledgeable and energetic. There was the right allotment of time for free time sandwiched in between starting with the tour guide and meeting up with the tour guide later in the afternoon. The guide knew to point out everything from the homes of famous musicians to sites from the filming of The Sound of Music. She had recommendations for restaurants and activities during our free choice hours in Salzburg. What a great day and city!

We really enjoyed our small group tour to Salzburg. Our guide was very nice and funny. It was a good balance of tour and free time to explore. She also gave a lot of great recommendations on where to go and places to eat during our 3 hours of free time. I would definitely book another tour with this group next time we are in Munich.

Salzburg is beautiful even on a drizzly day! On our way there by train, our personable and helpful tour guide, Suzanne, told our little group of ten people about the history of Bavaria and the alpine region. Once there, she walked us around charming Old City, pointing out historical places of interest which we might like to visit and also offering suggestions of where we could eat lunch, buy souvenirs, and even get the best chocolate Mozart balls. Suzanne was very accommodating, and it was nice for us to get to know all of the other people in our group. After finishing her tour and telling us where and when to meet back up, Suzanne left us to go our separate ways. Having several hours to explore on our own was very enjoyable. My husband and I ate lunch in a monastery restaurant from the 16th century and made some purchases in a couple of little gift shops. The highlight of our afternoon was visiting the home where Mozart was born and raised - Mozart's Geburtshaus - several floors with displays of items from his life and time - definitely a must-see for every music lover. Thanks to Suzanne and Radius Tours, our day trip to Salzburg was most pleasant and relaxing. If you're looking for a slower paced, more intimate tour with a large chunk of discretionary time included, then you will definitely enjoy this one!
