Muscat City Sightseeing Tour - A Fascinating Capital

Muscat, Oman

The tour begins by driving through the beautiful embassy quarter of Muscat en route to Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Visit the mosque, a religious landmark of Muscat and splendor of unique Islamic architecture (Islamic dress code to be observed).

Next you will drive to Muttrah, a delightful quarter of Muscat. Step into the fish market, stroll along the Corniche to admire the beautiful merchant houses and experience the shopping in the busy souk, well known for its silver craft shops, perfumes, souvenirs and much more to buy.

The tour continues to the Old Town where you proceed on foot, strolling around Portuguese forts Jalali and Mirani and Qasr Al Alam, the Palace of HM Sultan Qaboos. Your next stop is Bait Al Zubair Museum with its wealth of information and exhibits on the country’s culture, tradition and heritage.

The guide was knowledgeable and friendly. _br/_ The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is absolutely beautiful, just remember to cover up for this visit._br/_ Al Alam Palace has an unusual design and not at all what I expected a palace to look like.

Very informative tour, Rashid, our tour guide was very nice, and smiling all the time. He took us first to the Sultan Qaboob mosque, very beautiful contemporary Islamic architecture, then we went to the fish and vegetable market, which I personally would remove from the itinerary for lack of relevance and stay more time at the Muttra souk, this place has a lot to offer in diversity. Also we visited Muscat downtown with the official palace and a museum. In general the tour was very good, it covers a lot.

Guide was poor - he only talked to my husband in the front seat and the rest of us couldn't hear anything and we had to ask lots of questions A lot of time wasting that could have been put to better use

Not a bad tour but you can find it cheaper. We paid a bit more than others going through Viator.

The tour was nice but there was not much to see and the guide's English was very limited.

Review by:   tmichael5868,    April 2017 Review: 1 star rating: I do not recommend this
This was undoubtably one of worst tours I've ever been on...the guide was not knowledgeable about city or country, didn't quite understand the questions we asked in English and answered with information not ever asked for, and didn't know how to set time limits for points of interest stops. At the mosque a volunteer answered our questions and gave detailed information about the building of it while our guide Joseph had little to explain. It was VERY obvious that Joseph had not received enough training. The following day we took another tour with a MUCH more experienced guide Rasheed who was fabulous. Perhaps Joseph could shadow Rasheed for a few tours to learn how to conduct one. Shame on the company who allowed an ill-prepared guide to take clients out on a tour.

driver was late even after i called twice. he did not accompany inside museum or around courtyards. had no idea what we were looking at. when asked questions he did not know answer. i would say more of a driver than tour guide.

We had a great tour guide who gave us a really good tour of Muscat city provided a lot of info about the daily lives of the locals as well as info around their religion which we found fascinating.

A nice drive around this modern city. The Grand Mosque is the MUST visit place in Oman. It is an absolutely beautiful building, no matter what your religion or leanings, you cannot and will not be disappointed with a visit to it. Muttrah Souk is worth a visit, but not the hive of activity we had hoped for and like most souks is now more geared to the tourists rather than the locals. The fish market is being placed in a new modern building, so it too is losing its charm. A nice way to see Muscat.

Our guide Mr Rasheed was excellent and shared some wonderful information about each place. The Mosque is a must see! We shared a larger SUV with another couple so it was like a private tour. We saw a lot in 4 hrs !!

Our guide Rashid was very knowledgeable and polite with perfect English. He was able to answer all our questions and we were so happy to have toured the city with him. We would highly recommend this tour and would recommend having an Omani as your tour guide if you get to choose.

We had a lovely gentleman come pick us up from our hotel. The group was very small 2 other people besides us. We travelled in a 4x4 jeep a very nice spacious vehicle. Our guide was very friendly and informative. Gave us plenty of time at each venue we visited the whole time speaking to us and passing on very interesting details. at the end of the tour we asked for a special favour to be dropped of some other place besides our hotel and he obliged very kindly. Thanks to you all for giving us a wonderful experience and insight.

This was a fantástico tour with a great guide. The car was air-conditioned and the driver/guide had a very good level of English, he was opened and willing to explain everything with great knowledge about Muscat, Oman and Islam in general. Worth every penny!

A little worried at first as our driver was a little late but. This soon faded as he did his very best to accommodate all the group and the various requests made - even allowing us extra time at the cultural centre in the Muscat Mosque. All in all a fantastic trip, we'll organised and offering great value for money would have no hesitation in recommending this trip - ran by local tour oriental tours, only pity is we don't have time to take further trips around Oman with the company on this visit perhaps next time we would have no problem using them once again to go further afield.

Lovely!! The Mutrah was great once you got past all the crap, the mosque was gorgeous, the backstories of various parts of town were great, and I appreciated the closeness the tour guide had with various food vendors and museum personnel. Free museum entry, coffee, dates, dehydrated shark flesh. The whole bit.

Pick up from hotel was on time, we were sharing a small vehicle so there was the driver Rasheed and four on the tour. Rasheed was a very good guide who pointed out all the sights and escorted us around and even went out of his way to take me to the local Harley Davidson dealer after the others had been dropped at their hotels. Very helpful and spoke very good English. Tour was at a relaxed pace time at the Grand Mosque was good as we wanted to visit the Islsmic information centre which was on site. Had more than enough time at the fish market, about fifteen minutes then half an hour at the museum and the souk. Just enough time to have a quick look around the souk but you need to visit again to see it all. Because of Islamic new year the tour office was closed but I managed to find an email address for the tour company who run the trip and got the confirmation of pick up times from them via the email.

The tour was at a great pace and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although I would have preferred the guide (Mr, Rashid) to give us more info on the sites we visited (Sultan Qaboos Mosque, Bait al Zubair, Al Alam Palace, Muttrah Souk, Fish Market, etc.). The tour is a good introduction to the City of Muscat.

I could not have asked for more on this tour. As I was on my own for the tour I was a bit anxious about it, but when we got going there were two lovely couples and me, and we all got on well. The guide was really lovely and knowledgable man. He had lived in Muscat and really knew and loved his city, so that the trip was full of interesting stories and information. We went to numerous locations including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which is beautiful. However we never felt rushed and his personal touch really made it an excellent tour. Wonderful value for money!

The driver was very kind and helpful, even though he is neither a professional taxi driver nor a tourist guide._br/_ So, buy a book and read yourself what you want to know about art and history of the place._br/_ Apart from this, he came to visit all the sites with us (on foot after parking the car) and was flexible to adapt to all our requests. He bought water for us and even some food._br/_ Car was absolutely new, comfortable and very clean.

Guide/driver was excellent. Always on time, very friendly and knowledgable. This tour started at the mosque before the bus loads of tourists visit, so it was really great to enjoy the Grand Mosque quietly.

This is a great introduction to Muscat, the itinerary of this tour gives you a good insight to parts of Omani culture and also Muscat. We were the only ones on the tour and our guide Munil was friendly and well informed, he gave us a great insight to Oman and we especially enjoyed the Grand Mosque, a stunningly beautiful building. We got there early and as we were leaving the tourist buses were arriving. The drive to the Old Town was interesting and we enjoyed the walk through the Souk where there is a very good jewellery shop where you can get Oman necklaces made. _br/_ We booked this tour online and had difficulty confirming a pickup time as the office number was not answered and we ended up calling Orient Tours in Dubai who gave us a mobile number of Raju. I would recommend the mobile number is on their website and also included in the Viator contacts for this tour.

Our sightseeing tour was provided by Orient tours. Our guide Abdul aziz met us at a prearranged hotel promptly at 8 a.m and we were pleasantly surprised to find we were the only people booked on the trip. Abdul immediately drove us to the Grand Mosque where he was able to give us a detailed tour despite his rather faltering english. The reason for the early start became obvious after taking two hours to see the mosque - as we left we were met by about 24 coachloads of tourists coming in the opposite direction to see the mosque. We avoided seeing the fish market and then went to look around the Souk. Abdul showed us what was good value and after a coffee and bite to eat we were then taken to Muscat museum at Bait al Zubair which gave us an insight into Omani culture and history, the story of the boat 'Jewel of Muscat' and a worthwhile picture exhibition by various local and international artists as part of the Festival. Abdul was courteous and very helpful and it was a pity that we had arranged transport from the hotel back to our daughter's house at 13:30 as he would have taken us to see the royal palaces and any other sight we requested, but we ran out of time and even local Muscat people seem to get lost in the bewildering street and district system. We would thoroughly recommend this tour- very good value for money but opt for an early start to avoid the heat of the day.

It's just a taxi service really. No information, no guide. We were driven around and then dropped at the various sites being given no more information than the name of the building. If you're not looking for a guided tour it's OK.

I was in Muscat for 4 days and three of them i was working, finally i got the chance to take the tour because i did not have to much time and to much money._br/_ Rashid was our guide and he was quite open to answer all of our questions. _br/_ The city tour was amazing but the highlight of it was the Grand Mosque.

Ok, but we would have liked to see the older parts of the city. Some of the facts that were given were a bit odd, for example, the carpet in the mosque was Persian. Yes, it was made with Persian fibre, but in the mosque itself by women. The souk was a waste of time, as it was just a cheap market and of no interest. However our guide was polite and well mannered. A very good tour for the first time vistor to Muscat. We saw most of the main sites and really gained a feel for the layout of the city and confidence to go around later by ourselves. We booked a group tour but there was just us and our really excellent guide Rashid.

An excellent tour and good value for money. The driver/guide, Rashid, was punctual, polite, informative and good company. The tour was comfortable and extremely interesting taking in the Grand Mosque, Muttrah markets and souq and Muscat including the royal palace and museum of Omani life. There was plenty of time to view it all.
