Giraffe Center and Elephant Orphanage Tour from Nairobi

Engage with giraffes at close range at Nairobi's Giraffe Centre, and later visit an elephant orphanage that caters to baby elephants. You'll walk along a nature path to the Gogo River to learn more about Kenya's giraffes, and take a guided tour during feeding time. Then learn about the perils facing young African elephants orphaned by poaching.

After morning pickup at your hotel  between 9:30am and 10am in Nairobi, start your tour with a visit to the Giraffe Centre, headquarters for the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. Established when a giraffe calf was rescued from the western Kenya border, it features a small portion of a herd living in a semi-wild state at Giraffe Manor. Watch the animals come to a protecting wall to be fed, and make the most use of your visit along a 1-hour nature trail to the Gogo River, where you'll hear birdsong and possibly see giraffes in the wild.  

Next, you're taken to the elephant orphanage for a walk through the nursery. Explore the trails the infants take, see a mud bath in action, and walk around the stables that orphaned African elephants sleep in at night for warmth and protection, accompanied by their elephant keepers. After observing their feeding time you're transferred back to your hotel in the afternoon.

The tour provider was Cruzeiro Safaris and the driver guide was Timothy. We called and extended the booking to also include an afternoon game drive in Nairobi National Park. So, Cruzeiro Safaris was good when I called and extended the booking at the published rate, to also include the afternoon. Timothy was a good driver, but was not very knowledgeable about the Elephant Orphanage or Giraffe Center....the good news is that both of those facilities has a speaker that gives you the background. Where Timothy excelled was on the game drives. He had a good eye for spotting the animals, was on the phone and talking with the other drivers regarding where the animals were at, so we got to see lions, white rhinos, Masai giraffes, common zebras, cape buffalo, ostriches, impala, elan, and hartebeasts. The only downside to the day was the vehicle, while very much enjoyed the roof that opened up, so could stand and see animals, BUT the aircon did not work, so there was times in the morning when driving that had to have windows open to get air in the van.
