Philadelphia and Amish Country Day Trip from New York

New York City, United States of America

Explore the countryside outside New York on a day trip to Philadelphia and Lancaster County, home of the Amish people. You'll drive through the beautiful Pennsylvania countryside, tour Philadelphia and its famous Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, and take an ride in an authentic Amish buggy.

Departing New York City, you'll drive through New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. It's the second largest city on the East Coast, and only 100 miles (160 kilometers) from New York City.

Upon arrival in Philadelphia, you will embark on a panoramic tour that includes Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Elsert Alley (the oldest inhabited street in America) and more. Arriving in the historic heart of Philadelphia, you'll visit the famous Liberty Bell and Constitution Square and Hall, symbols of freedom in America.

Departing Philadelphia you will see the famous "Rocky Steps" before continuing to Lancaster County. After a break for lunch at the Amish marketplace (lunch not included), you'll have an authentic Amish buggy ride through Amish farm country. During the ride you'll learn how the Amish live without modern technology - no electricity, running water, telephone service or appliances.

In the late afternoon your tour heads east for an evening arrival in New York.

The coach trip was good. Unfortunately it rained all during stop in Phili. Amish country interesting but very commercialised. Still worth it.

A long day but well worth it. Philadephia is steeped in American History and including of course the Liberty Bell. One cannot miss the Rocky Steps and I even managed to run up them. Again lots of interesting little shops selling their wares and nice little cafes to have breakfast or lunch. The tour then took us to Lancaster where a lot of Amish live intermingled with other ordinary Americans not that anyone we met we could call ordinary - all lovely people. We had a ride in a buggy and our driver was a well kept 73 year old called Yarn and he had 5 children and 28 grandchildren. Well worth the experience and we finished off with a stop at some Amish Markets which were amazing. If you wish to buy one of their quilts however you had best have deep pockets.

Our tour guide was outstanding in his knowledge and humour and without him the tour would be rated lower. Lots of bus travel and the history in Philadelphia was interesting but the 'Amish' component I found contrived. A visit to a shopping mall was not what I expected as an Amish experience.

An excellent tour well led by Jonathon. Left right on time but a couple of things. The tour leaves from Grey Line 8th Ave. Not Grand Central which the advertisement says. The booking confirmation has it correct so just be sure to check it.There is a fair bit of standing and walking at Philadelphia flat terrain thats not mentioned. The Amish experience is a little disappointing in terms of content but does provide an inside real experience. The bus wifi was excellent.

My family and I booked this tour and it was well worth the money. Jonathan was our tour guide and was very informative. You will walk a lot during the 1st portion of the tour, independence hall,Liberty Bell etc. Very good value for the money if you’re a history buff. Thanks again to Jonathan/Mario!

Loved this tour, everything was amazing, loved each stop and especially Intercourse, would of loved spending more time at Intercourse and would of loved more on the Amish. Our driver was great, unfortu8natly not so much the tour guide, unfortunately he spoke to the group from inside a circle so who were behind him was unable to hear a single word, there was a Spanish translator who was there for only the Spanish people of about 6 people, 3 couples, and catered to only them, so when we were asked to give gratuity for all three and how much they were asking for from each one I did not like that one bit so gave them still a good amount but less than what they asked for. Would recommend this tour and would love to do same, loved every where we went....

Great day didn't expect Philadelphia to be so good. Amish experience a great fun way to end the day. Only snag was our guide seem to have only basic knowledge compared to second guide doing spanish/portugese tour adjacent to us. This guide seem to really have lots of information to share.

My wife and I really enjoyed this tour and the opportunity to get out of New York for a day into some of the most beautiful, picturesque farming countryside I have ever seen - around the town of Intercourse believe it or not. There were three tour guides on board and Eddie the English tour guide was very good. He gave the history in logical fashion and then gave us breaks from his commentary. Compare that to the tour guides on hop on hop off buses who bombard you with thousands of disjointed facts. Forget the hop on hop off buses - take this tour instead and enjoy Philadelphia and the beautiful countryside where the Amish community we visited live. If you enjoy viewing rural landscapes I highly recommend this tour.

This was a great and fun tour. I learned a lot about our founding fathers and ate some great food. The amish Country was very pretty and we did a buggy ride and some shopping I was able to find some great gifts. it was a great trip and I hope more people will take it.

Loved this trip and Philadelphia was even more beautiful than expected. Had a great informative guide Manny._br/_ Lancaster Amish Country was a wonderful part of the tour, would have preferred a little more hands on with the Amish community to ask more questions.

What a great day out! Our tour guide Yohei (sorry if I've spelt that wrong!) was excellent. He was incredibly knowledgable and had a great sense of humour. We were so glad we took this tour. Philly was beautiful to see, and the Amish Country was lovely. Highly recommend!!!

Firstly, after boarding the bus and sitting in an unoccupied seat behind another single traveller sitting in an unoccupied seat, we were told by the male guide that if couples came on we would need to move to allow them to sit together. Not impressed. Surely it's first in, first served and we boarded not long before departure time.If couples want to ensure they get a seat together they should come early. As it turned out the bus wasn't full so all was ok but singles should not be discriminated against!!_br/_ The schedule was good, all very interesting seeing Liberty Bell, Senate, Constitution Hall,The old houses etc and the staff there were great. Unfortunately it was raining for most of our tour which caused some people to remain on the bus. The Amish site was worth seeing but would have been more interesting if the cart driver had provided more information. Some of the others apparently did much better than ours. Plus the horses would not go to start with then went so slowly, it was painful as due to the rain we couldn't see anything anyway and were tightly squashed in._br/_ The 'Kettle Village' stop was ridiculously long at 1hour and 10 minutes in pouring rain. There are only so many souvenirs you can buy and many of us wished to get back on the bus after 30 minutes but it was locked. That could have been shortened due to the weather. as it was, there was nowhere to shelter and most of us ended up soaked. _br/_ This tour needs some fine tuning. The guides also need to provide more in depth information. This tour is quite expensive.

An interesting walk round Philadelphia in the morning seeing the Liberty Bell, old part of town and The Rocky steps area. Stopped after a few hours walking for an early lunch break in a disappointing mall where most of the eateries had closed down. Then a drive over thLancashire County to the Amish region. Very picturesque scenery on the trip. Had a buggy ride for 30 minutes. We were up front with the Amish man and had a really good view. Onto a Amish Shopping outlet for an hour and 40 minutes for tea and shopping. Very good and excellent ice cream, a must to try. The only downside to the trip was we speak English and half of the coach was Spanish speaking and the tour guide seemed to speak to them a lot more than in English. Otherwise a very enjoyable trip which we would recommend.

Wonderful trip. The weather complement the day into our Philadelphia - Amish Trip. Our tour guide, Manny was extremely knowledgeable, congenial, friendly and funny. He shared many of the tid-bits about the places we visited. Very impressive his keen ability of going from Spanish into Italian easily. Jesus , our driver is a highly qualified driver who made sure we return safely._br/_ As a New Yorker , this is my second tour with VIATOR and I will recommend to all of my New York friends and family.

The trip was ok but the Amish part wasn't very good as around 12/14 people are put on a cart and get pulled around a 25 min trip some up hill with horses which I felt sorry for (animal cruelty) they were red hot with no water to drink and he asked everyone for a tip please avoid this part of the trip

This tour covers some of the important sites in Philadelphia relating to the US's political history. Hence, it is good for those who are particularly interested in the US' political history. However, it does have a little something for movie buffs too. If you are a fan of Rocky, you will enjoy the visit from outside to the Museum of Art. Amish country farms are very beautiful. However, the part I was looking forward to the most - riding in a traditional buggy - turned out to be the worst. The buggy driver insisted on seating 16 even if they are all XXXL-sized! This was so unpleasant and frustrating for me. And am sure it was hard on the 2 horses pulling the buggy. I hadn't taken a 12-hour flight for this! Yet, he was eagerly expecting a tip. I didn't give any. For the whole day, we were accompanied by two tour guides one for English and Japanese speaking tourists and the other for Spanish and Italian speaking group. The two tour guides would count and re-count the group members and yet move on to the next site leaving 1 or 2 behind! What was also surprising was that the both guides were expecting tips! Why should the guide of one-language pay for the other tour guide of another language? This is meaningless.

This was a wonderful tour, well organised and the tour guide Manny was very knowledgeable and animated._br/_ We visited both Philadelphia Liberty Bell, Town Hall and the Rocky steps as well as Lancaster County Amish country, and while it was a long day, it did not feel rushed at all._br/_ Would totally recommend this tour to others.

This was a nice tour and we are glad we went but it wasn and #39;t that informative compared to other tours. They do take you to all those places but there is not that much time if you want to see or do anything. We didn and #39;t mind as we will probably end up going back to Amish country as we were snowed out.

Fantastic tour. Yohei was our guide for English and Japanese tourists and another one did French and Spanish. The tourists are split on the bus so we could only hear Yohei so it means we don't have to sit through 4 languages.

This tour was excellent and our tour guide, Joseph, is first class. Joseph's knowledge of history was superb but he did not blind us with unnecessary information! Our driver was also excellent he was helpful and accommodating. However, it would have been nicer to spend more time in the Amish town. We just about had time for lunch and no time to walk around the shops and houses. Perhaps you could build in an extra half an hour to spend there. Thank you. Martha.

Review by:   Borneo_Bibz,    February 2017 Review: 3 star rating: Worth doing
The Philadelphia trip was packed - many places to visit in one area. But too bad Mike Pence had to drop in that day and ruined half of my day. They closed an entire block next to the Liberty bell museum. I was separated from my group couldn't get back to them and missed some of the places. Had to call the tour office to let them know that they have a tourist left behind. I wasn't happy, but at least I found the bus and driver let me in and used the in-bus WiFi nice! to call my mom and whinge. The trip to the Amish Country was supposed to be my highlight. I thought maybe coming from Borneo where farmings are done the old school style, I could compare notes with the Amish farmers and brag about our more primitive way of farming. No chance that. We were sat in a horse carriage led by an Amish lady, going round and round vast empty lands - they don't farm in winter. But at least I get to play guess which house is Amish and which one is Mennonite. The Amish lady only tell you stuff if you ask her the question. No, we didn't get to go down and inspect their house or at least get a glimpse of what it was like to be an Amish. I had better experience with the Bedouins in Jordan. I hardly see any Amish blokes around. Probably they're in the kitchen next to the fireplace, singing a hymn from their Ausbund while making ropes or something. The country itself is beautiful, calm and peaceful. If you're used to busy streets and noises, this place is for you to take refuge. May best be visited during spring or summer.

Really fantastic trip. Began in Philadelphia. Unfortunately liberty hall was closed so we saw some other sights instead. The restaurant they take you to isn't great so just be warned there is a starbucks around the corner and other places to eat. The Amish part of the trip wasn't as informative as I had hoped and the tour guide did not know a lot about the people. The buggy ride was slightly awkward and you don't really see a farm in operation as we had hoped. You also spend a lot of time on the bus which I enjoyed. The tour guide was good and knew a lot about New York and the history of the US. Over-all I would definitely recommend going on this trip.

We were very pleased with the places we visited. However the quality of the transportation company and the tour guide was less than acceptable. I have been using Viator to book many trips for the last 5 years and never had a poor experience until this trip. I did not feel safe with the bus driver as he exceeded the speed limit, ran over curbs, and was very impersonal with passengers. While the tour guide was knowledgeable he focused on one couple who spoke Italian, rather than the seven English speaking passengers in his group. I was even asked to change seats on the bus to accommodate the couple, so that they could spread out and rest on the way back from the trip. To have English, Italian, German, and Portuguese speaking tour guides on one bus was excessive. At the end of the day the tour guide told passengers how to tip him and the driver in exact money value....very inappropriate. While Philadelphia and Amish Country were wonderful, the traveling experience was a disappointment for the money we paid for this trip. Before booking another Viator tour I would definitely check into the transportation company as well ask how many languages would be translated on the bus.

I really dont think Philadelphia has much to offer the tourist and what there is can all be seen on this visit with ease there is one thing not mentioned though and that is the statue opposite the Rocky statue and steps.

Whilst I enjoyed the tour. We would have loved to have done a whole day in Lancaster County Amish Country without going to Philadelphia which should be its own day trip as we only arrived in Intercourse at around 2pm and we left at 4:30pm. We did not have enough time to see all the things that we wanted to see but really enjoyed what little time we had to explore that Amish shopping village in the town of Intercourse.

Seems everything was super prepared and fake and that the only thing they look for during the trip is for you to spend money. The places where we had lunch wasnt great, had an organic burger and the meat was dry and as hard as a rock. On the other hand, the pies I bought were very very sweet and i can tell they aren't baked with fresh/organics products. _br/_ A good point was the stop in Philadelphia. We could see a few things that are difficult to access without a tour.

Good way to see a little of Philadelphia and Amish country if time is limited. We got behind due to some passengers not getting back to the bus on time at various stops, which was annoying to those of us who followed the time allowances. The oldest street was interesting and picturesque. The Amish country buggy ride was short, and our driver said very little to us, although the tour guide had given us background information before arriving. Loved the stop in Intercourse, PA- yes that is the real name!- shops were charming and we had the best ice cream ever.
