Papeete Inner Island Full-Day Jeep Safari
USD $93.00

Papeete Inner Island Full-Day Jeep Safari

Papeete, French Polynesia

Discover the best of Papeete on this full-day 4WD safari adventure. You'll travel through almost impenetrable rainforest to discover some of the jewels of Tahiti. This is a rare opportunity to see the places where most tourists cannot gain access. Experience the untouched majestic beauty of Papeete and uncover archeological sites on this full-day jeep safari tour.

Discover the interior of the island of Tahiti by 4 wheel drive vehicle. The tour will take you to Mount Marau. You'll be taken to an altitude of 3600 feet, stop for a bird's eye view of Punaruu Valley, once a fortress built by the French during the Tahitian uprising of 1844 to 1846. The site is now used as a TV relay station.

At 4320 feet, there is a magnificent panorama of the island's highest peaks: Orohena, Aorai, Tetufera and Teamaa.

Tour continues to the Tiarei Arahoho Blow Hole, Tahiti's biggest roadside attraction. It's unmarked and located at the base of a steep cliff on a narrow shoulder on the mountain side of the road. Over countless years, battering surf has undercut the basalt shoreline and eroded a passage to the surface beneath the road. When waves crash against the rocks, the result is a geyser-like plume of sea water that showers on lookers.

You'll enter to the Fa'aurumai Valley to visit the three waterfalls. The rainforest on both sides of this small valley is thick, nearly impenetrable and filled with "hutu" and "mape" trees (chestnut trees, only found in the Society Islands). If you look carefully, you'll notice star fruit, guava and "mape" along the trail. From the parking lot, it's several hundred yards to Vaimahutu, the first fall, which cascades 100 feet to the earth and empties into a pool. Continue the rainforst walk and within 20-minutes will reach the other two falls : Haamaremare Iti and Haamaremare Rahi.

The trip mediocre. No water was provided on an 8 hr trip. Lunch wasn't included and the restaurant didn't take credit cards which we did not know up front. The driver basically put everyone in the back of a truck. Drove to a couple of places with no dialogue on travel.. The driver was friendly and informative when he wasn't driving. The scenery was nice.

The tour was nice but way too long. Should have booked the half-day tour.

The view of the island is beautifull and interesting. However, we never really learned much else regarding information and I was slightly disappointed in the guide.

Wow what a day Augustine our driver was terrific. It was a great trip seeing the jungle and many beautiful waterfalls and luckily an amazing rainbow. It was terrific to c such a different aspect after seeing so many wonderful fish and beaches. This trip is not for the fainthearted as the road is a real adventure. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

First, take plenty of bug spray. The trip was much more rough going than we thought. At the start the guide was not that helpful as I asked him what were we likely to see, his response was trees, really informative ?

The guide was good but could have talked more about what we were seeing. We also wanted to stop more at different stops and swim.We passed a few nice places where people were swimming. when i asked he said the weather wasn't good for swimming. Although weather was't the greatest raining on and off. We wanted to swim. We all had our suits on and it was listed in the tour that we would swim at a waterfall.

Excellent trip. Beautiful scenery and lot of water falls to observe. Only draw back was the lunch. It was not good. No one in our group could finish their lunch because it was that bad. Beer was good.

This trip was absolutely amazing. If you happen to get Sydney as your driver guide you hit the jackpot. The trail is bumpy! Hey its a safari, however he takes every precaution to assure a save, magnificent , and breathtaking journey journey. The price was right as well. We have used Viator on several occasions Antarctica for one......they always come thru with amazing driver guides vehicles prices and follow up to make sure you have the best experience...free pick up at hotels and piers. Thanks Viator for many hours of fabulous tour hours

What a great day out. Amazing scenery and a gazillion waterfalls. A refreshing swim in one of the streams. Augustine our guide was lovely and stopped many times she to show us beautiful flowers and for an American couple 'wild' bananas! He was a very competent driver on some crazy tracks. Thoroughly recommend. Cheers Pam, Australia

We never lost our sense of adventure as we rode along the bumpy, steep and winding road/track that took us across the middle of the island through the caldera and returned us to the pier from the other side of the island. The scenery was varied and often spectacular and the bilingual commentary was competent and informative. It was a long and somewhat tiring day picked up punctually at 9.20 am and returned to our cruise ship at 6.05 pm but we never felt bored. The only criticism I would make is that the lunch stop was expensive and the food I ordered unappetizing fried chicken was served with limp french fries rather than the beans and rice described on the menu. If possible, taking a picnic lunch with you could be a better alternative.

Not for the faint of heart! Choose the half day better! The top is beautiful but no need to make it all the way up. It's dangerous to go the final 3 miles to the top. The full day ended up for us taking the entire day and arrived at our resort at 7:30 p.m.The full day was not worth it for us.

We enjoyed this tour a lot. Simon was a great driver and guide. The interior of Tahiti is very impressive and the swim at the natural pool is a highlight.

This was a really great way to see the beauty of the Tahiti island! There's some really cool and very extreme landscape there and the tour guide was really knowledgeable about the island. It was helpful that there was a bilingual tour guide since there were French and English speakers on the tour. He was also great at taking pictures for people. The restaurant that we stopped at for lunch was great and had a magnificent view. I would definitely recommend this tour if you're planning to visit Tahiti!

Fantastic day out and a great way to see some more of the island. Our guide was really friendly and knew everything there was to know about the places we visited. We didn't go swimming in the river, but just beware of the mosquitos - I got loads of bites even after spraying lots of repellent.

Our tour guide, Simon, was knowledgeable and told great stories. He seemed to know the roads well which was good since the path was rocky and steep. Simon was entertaining and seemed to care about the people in the tour group and went out of his way to make it enjoyable for us. Our lunch stop was one of the best meals on the trip as it tasted so fresh and flavorful. We ended the day by being driven to a spot on the island for a spectacular sunset. I think this was a place that Simon and other locals knew about. It was our only sunset while in French Polynesia and it was killer. Kudos to the Simon and this tour company!

Review by:   Pamela R,    April 2017 Review: 4 star rating: Recommended
There really isn't a lot to see on this island. The tour took us to see the old WW II gun turrets and a few places around the island. They really tried to make it interesting but this place is designed for swimming and snorkling and not much else.

Eric was our fantastic tour guide. He gave us lots of interesting facts about the island. He shared with us about some of the medicinal uses of the plants grown in the inner island. During our tour, we saw what seemed like thousands of waterfalls. It was so beautiful. By the end of the tour, we had a much greater appreciation of Tahiti and of the people who live there because of the information Eric shared in such an entertaining way. There were 6 of us booked on this tour. I would highly recommend this tour. You will be fortunate if you get Eric as your guide.

Tour wasn't well organised so we started with a trip to a supermarket to get the food for the included lunch. This is an inner island tour, so it's mainly concerned with water falls, rivers, pools that some of the group went swimming in, ruins of old villages and travelling up to the high forest and lakes there in. The views are dependent on the weather, and the day I did it we couldn't see much from the mountain tops so we mainly just saw forest and rain. The transport was a sort of large jeep that could handle steep muddy inclines and we had lunch half way up the mountains surrounded by chickens, which it turned out were happy to eat the remains of the cooked chickens we were eating. Doubtless a great tour in good weather, sight-seeing is limited in other conditions.

Nice trip that was great intro to the interior of the island. Some very nice views along the way. But it was very frustrating to travel about 75 of the way across the centre of the island only to have to retrace our path to go back. Apparently, the final part of the road across the island is privately owned and they want too much to allow the operators to use it. Personally, I would have been happy to pay a little more and get to go right across and back along the other coast rather than three hours repeating what we had already travelled!

Our tour guide Sidney took us deep into Papenoo valley, with stops for sightseeing and photos. He was knowledgeable and helpful about what we were looking at. Sure, the ride was rough at times through the unimproved road, but that was part of the adventure. Glad we did it.

This tour is amazing and a must do while in Papette. Deep into the interior of Tahiti, lots of rough roads to see amazing waterfalls. Our guide was very knowledgeable and only too happy to stop for many photo shoots. Riding in the back of a truck, so much fun.

This was an awesome way to spend our last day of our honeymoon! We really didn't know what to expect, but certainly weren't disappointed. The jeep ride through the town was even cool, but once we got to the back roads I was blown away. The scenery was beautiful. The ride was quite rough, but we stopped several times to take pictures. The waterfalls were awesome and the swimming spot was very cool. The restaurant was unexpected for me - it was way up, more or less in the middle of nowhere with incredible scenery. The food was excellent too. Our tour guide was a very kind and knowledgable gentleman. He had so much knowledge of the island and was very interesting to listen to. My wife and I are very happy that we chose to do this tour and we highly recommend it!

This was a fun tour and the group we had was great. The only thing was we were not in a jeep as advertised which was disappointing but non the less a great time. The scenery was so picturesque almost like New Zealand with all the green mountains and waterfalls. We had a great time and we stopped at the only hotel in the mountains for lunch. Lunch was not included but was very good.

Our tour guide was young, however he knew his stuff very well, was very responsible, friendly, intelligent and made the tour very fun, even in some rain, which added to the adventure factor! Luckily it cleared up nicely on the way back, which made for some excellent photos.

The tour itself was great, but I would book through a site other than viator as viator seemed to get it wrong. Was told could use an electronic voucher, but tour guide wanted paper voucher. Also booked an english language tour, but was put on a mostly french speaking tour - despite the same tour company sending out a mostly english tour on the same day. We should have booked directly through the hotel.

It was absolutely gorgeous and I am sure we could have seen it no other way. The ride was very rough - not for those with back issues. Since lunch was on our own I think it would have been nice to know that there was only one place to eat and it would be approx. 25 each.

I was excited to do this tour, but the experience fell short of my expectations. First, we did not visit the Tiarei Arahoho Blow Hole as described in this tour description. No explanation was given why it was skipped. Second, while we did see the waterfalls they were from a distance and not as impressive as I was led to believe. It also became repetitive. Much of the tour was spent driving up and down the mountain. More hiking or variety in the activities would have been nice. Lunch was fine, but should have been included in the cost of the tour. With all that being said, our guide was informative, told excellent stories and did a nice job of breaking up the drive to point out plants and other details from the culture.

A full day in the rainforest. Hiro our guide was very informative - knew about the islands folklore, also very knowledgeable about the plants. The meal in the restaurant and show in the middle of nowhere was excellent. Well worth the money.

Another great tour. The small group 6 people picked up on time and we had a full day up into the mountain and the local guide made sure we saw all the best views and photo stops. The lunch stop was fantastic and the staff put on a 'show' for everyone. We originally booked without lunch but my advice would be 'BOOK LUNCH' the food was reasonably priced and tastey.
