Montmorency Falls Bike Tour in Quebec

Quebec City, Canada

Don’t pass up the chance to see lofty Montmorency Falls on this 4-hour bike tour from Old Quebec. A cable-car ride to the top gives you prime views of the roaring water. You'll also cycle to Domaine de Maizerets, a luxurious estate that was turned into a city park, and spot windsurfers at Beauport Bay against the scenic backdrop of Île d’Orléans. Along the way, an informative guide shares the history of Quebec City. This small-group tour capped at 15 people is sure to please riders of all levels.

Meet your small group at a bike shop in the heart of Old Quebec for your 4-hour morning tour. You’ll get fixed up with a bike and helmet during a safety briefing. Bikers of all skill levels will enjoy this tour covering about 16 miles (25 km) of mostly flat terrain through the city to Montmorency Falls.

When you’re ready, pedal off after your guide to the northern outskirts of the city. Cross a bridge over the picturesque Saint Charles River and then cycle along the Corridor du Littoral, a two-way bicycle lane separated from the main roads.

Stop at Domaine de Maizerets, a former 17th-century estate spanning 67 acres (27 hectares), and learn about the property’s evolution from a New France land concession into a city park. Locals visit this oasis for family gatherings, outdoor concerts, bird-watching, and to stroll along the pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly paths.

Next, continue on the bike route that parallels the course of the St Lawrence River. Catch sight of windsurfers and bird-watchers along the shoreline of Beauport Bay and learn about its key role in the Battle of Montmorency. In the distance, see Île d’Orléans, a rustic island ringed with centuries-old homes and churches.

Upon arrival at Montmorency Falls, leave your bike at the base of the waterfalls. Hop aboard a cable car to the top and soak up stunning views of the 275-foot-long (83 meters) sheath of water, that is nearly the length of an American football field, pours into the Montmorency River.

Your guide takes you around the top of the promontory, starting at the elegant Manoir Montmorency. Learn about the area’s development into the Industrial Period, walk along a boardwalk and cross a suspended bridge offering spectacular panoramas.

Return to your bike and cycle back to your departure point, admiring skyline views of Quebec City along the way.

We had a wonderful bike ride on a beautiful day. Our guide was great! He was warm and friendly and gave us lots of interesting information about the area and the plant life. I highly recommend this tour.

Tour begins at a bike shop that was only a few minutes' walk from the cruise ship terminal. Staff and guides were fully bilingual and very pleasant. Our group was approximately 15 with two guides. Bicycles were in good condition with handy front basket in which we found our sack lunch and a bottle holder for the complimentary water bottle. Except for a few stop light controlled intersections, the entire route is on dedicated bike paths.

The lovely trip was made better by our guide, Guy. He was really knowledgeable of the local history, and also the local plants. I would recommend this trip to all my friends in the future.

The lady in the store gave me a sweater to borrow b/c it was colder than I expected. She saved me from shivering. Our guide was nice and thoughtful of others . He waited a few times for the slower folks to catch up. The falls was great. Nic pics. He even took a picture of me up there. The lunch was a bonus. I recommend them.

This was such a wellrun tour. From the bike fitting, to the bag of snacks and water to the guide full of information. It was an easy ride with several stops along the way so we could hear about local points of interest. The Falls are spectacular. Great day out

Bike riding was for the most part pretty level. Just small hills. Beautiful scenery and guide showed us many things and gave us ample time at the falls. Biking on return was much faster than to falls. A little harder for me, but doable. All in all a great trip!!

The bike tour left Quebec from near the Public Market and traveled along a system of bicycle trails for approximately 10 miles until we reached Montmorency Falls. We then took a cable car to the top of the falls, walked across a bridge over the falls then back down a series of stairs. The Falls are spectacular. We returned to Quebec along the trails we had come on. The guide paced the trip perfectly with times to discuss what we were seeing! Great excursion.

We had a really very nice, easy bike trip all bike path to Montmorency Falls. The suspension bridge and falls were fun! Our guide, Guy, was great: knowledgeable about both history and nature. The snack they provided hit the spot...and even included a gluten-free bar, which I personally appreciated! The bike company was organized, on time, supplied all you could need for this short half-day trip. Next time in Quebec City, we think we will take a different bike trip--with this same company, for another experience.

Great tour. Everything that we expected. Cycle shop was friendly and helpful, yummy snacks and our tour guide, Guy was terrific!_br/_ And the falls are beautiful. Adding the zip line As an option to the tour would be fun!

I was a bit concerned about the length of the ride haven't ridden a bike in over 25 years, but it was a very easy trip with a few stops along the way there and back. The bike paths and scenery along the way were nice. We viewed the falls from all angles and our group voted to take the stairs down the far side to get a different vantage point. The included snack was tasty and just right to keep our energy up. Loved this tour.

Really amazing trip and good tour guide. Our guide was very considerate and patient. They secure ur safety and introduced u the views. It's physically demanding at least u should be able to ride for one hour continuously and it's a round trip including climbing stairs too. They give u some snack bar

One of the best things to do in Quebec is ride a bike. This was a great tour. Don't miss it.

Wonderful experience. The bike path once you get out of the city was pretty flat and a very easy ride. Our guides were terrific and made several stops along the way to explain a little history. There was plenty of time at the falls for pictures and to enjoy the views.

Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area. We had a large group and it was managed very welll. Safety was clearly a priority whether on the bike or walking towards the falls. A light snack was provided which was perfect for when we arrived at the base of the falls. I would definitely book another tour when I'm back in Quebec City.

Excellent experience. Guy and Frank led about 14 of us on the easy ride. We stopped along the short ride several times to see parks, gardens, and other things of interest. The guides were very attentive and super conscious about safety- looking out for how riders were doing and making sure the street crossings were safe. There was plenty of time to explore the falls independently. People could opt in or out of any part of the falls e.g., crossing or not crossing the bridge at the top. We did not stay as a group while at the falls but had the freedom to explore the site and decide which way we wanted to come down- gondola or stairs. Very fun 1/2 day - good for adults and families. They provided water and snack date bread and cheese to riders. Guy was extremely knowledgeable and a great host and frank was an engaged assistant.

Tour was excellent. The bike ride was nice and relaxing the falls we're beautiful. Only downfall I found was there were activities such a zip lining across the fallsand wall climbing up the side of the fallsthat we we're not able to do to due to time but may have enjoyed doing while there. So it would be worth another trip there :-

Fantastic ride to and from the Falls. Leisurely pace for the ride, along flat paved trails. The Falls Park was lovely. You take a tram to the top and walk from one side of the falls to the other, with a foot bridge spanning the top for unbelievable views of the mighty water form the top! Fun, action-packed tour!

Great tour. Beautifully organized, fun guide, all equipment and snacks were in place. Unfortunately we had absolutely awful weather and had to pedal in the rain, but I could not find any fault at all with the company. On a perfect day this would be a marvel. Go for it.

Review by:   Joseph H,    July 2017 Review: 3 star rating: Worth doing
The Falls were terrific and the guide was friendly. There was no tour between Quebec City and Montmorency Falls, mostly a straight bike ride of 9 miles. Also, the bike ride, while on flat terrain was not leisurely. We returned in 45 minutes which means we were averaging 12 miles an hour which included 2 water brakes. The bikes were well-maintained, the snacks were tasty and the right quantity and a nice water bottle was provided. A great way to get to the Falls but it is not a tour.

Great tour! It was a great combination of biking and site seeing. The bike ride was a little over an hour there and an hour back on a mainly flat surface. The snacks included were perfect to keep energy up and true to local cuisine. Although it was raining in the beginning, they provided ponchos and the tour continued on. Would recommend!!

We booked this tour after reading the reviews, when we went to Quebec back in September 2016. We picked a cold and drizzly day, but the tour staff were over-accommodating, and loaned all of us outerwear to make our trip more enjoyable. The trek to the Falls and back is about 16 miles. If you are not at least moderately physically fit, this will not be a good tour for you. It is true that the ride isn't strenuous, however, there are subtle inclines and declines that raise your effort level considerably. The tour is on a designated bike path that follows along the highway but far enough off the highway to feel secure and it feels like forever until you get to the Falls! Once you arrive, you will have to take a glass cable car up to the falls, so if you are afraid of heights, you may not enjoy this. Once you are up, you will walk across a bridge that suspends over the Falls. Again, several people on the tour had a difficult time doing this due to the height issue. Once you are across, you will walk down about 300 steps to get to the bottom. This can also be scary going down because the steps are steep and you are somewhat suspended off of wood stantions. You will stay at the Falls for about an hour and a half, and eat the lunch that was packed for you by the tour. I don't really remember the lunch, but I think it was some kind of sandwich, grain bar and some cheese. Also, they give you Maple Water instead of regular bottled water. If you want a hearty lunch, I suggest you bring it yourself! There are sandwiches you can buy at the Falls as well they are pretty good. After you see the Falls, you then have to trek back another 8 miles on bike. This can be tiring, and at the end of this 4 hour tour, you will be exhuasted! The location of the bike store is about one block away from the Market where you can buy novelties and specialty items and souvenirs, and it's also a short walk to the Lower Town. All in all, I would say this is a nice to do if you have the time, energy and physicality but not a necessity. Know your physical limitations before booking this tour!

It was a cool fall day. The fall colors around the waterfall were superb. The trip lasted about 4 hours. It was an easy ride. The guide Gui was safe, friendly and informative. Most of the trip was on bike trail, not roads.

Loved this bike ride out to Montmorency Falls and return. Phil our guide was very informative with current and historical information along the way and at the falls, he kept an eye on the group to make sure we were all coping ok with the ride. It was a very hot day so we had a couple of rest stops in some shady areas. Bikes and equipment are well maintained and would highly recommend.

We thought this bike tour was a highlight of our time in Quebec City. We enjoyed the history, galleries, shops, sights and restaurants, but we were also ready for something different after a few days. We were fortunate to ride on a perfect summer day with a very friendly and engaging guide, Carol. The distance of about 16 miles round trip on flat terrain was enough to make us feel as if we had earned our lunch, but was also felt leisurely. Carol's commentary was great, the path was very well kept, and the Falls were a wonderful destination. The outfitter handled everything efficiently and professionally. If you go, be sure to stop by the covered market across the street from the bike shop too!
