Northern Lights Night Tour from Reykjavik

Reykjavik, Iceland

Don't miss the opportunity to take a mysterious night trip to witness the famous Northern Lights, one of nature's most spectacular displays. Far from the glow of the city, you'll go on a hunt for the elusive Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. The famous Northern Lights are visible from the onset of autumn to the light nights of spring.

On a clear night, you may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens, painting dramatic shapes, colors and patterns on the night sky.

This tour is seasonal, operating only from September to April.

Great tour! Our driver took us to the best spot and was very informative. He wouldn't give up until we found the best view.

I made two of the three attempts allotted to see the Northern lights but was unsuccessful. While I do not blame that on the company Gray Lines I feel that they have enough experience to know that certain days hold a slim chance and yet they take a coach load of people on these tours aimlessly searching. To make atters worse my first night the tour guide kept speaking about being hopeful, positve etc whilst it was freezing outside. She stayed at the one location for hours circling the Church. I would have felt better go8mg somewhere else. It was frustrating

Despite all of the negativity towards Grayline, we could not have had a better experience. Highlight of the trip, but make sure you wrap up warm!!!

The tour guide and transportation were very good but we had no luck seeing the lights and unfortunately were not able to go on another night to try again. Not only did we have conflicts in the schedule the weather as a whole wasn't cooperative during the week. The lights forecast was low and a full moon didn't help. It was a huge disappointment to our family but we recognize that it was outside our control. That said, our trip to Iceland in total was wonderful. What an absolutely beautiful country with spectacular scenery, warm hospitality and friendly people.

We did not see the northern lights due to the snowy weather T_T

I was in Reykjavik for only 3 nights and this tour was canceled the first and third nights due to cloud cover. On the second night we managed to get out to a dark location but there were 6 large buses worth of people in a really small pull-off from the highway. I understand the tour goes to different places every night depending on a few factors ours was chasing the empty sky, there were still a few clouds around but after standing around for an hour a few people managed to catch a glimpse of a green streak. They didn't 'dance or move' according to the guide so she said we could come back again as this glimpse wasn't sufficient. Keep your voucher as it is still valid for 2 years! One important point though - if the tour is canceled due weather, MAKE SURE YOU REBOOK! at the hotel desk, or give them a call - do NOT just turn up thinking you'll be put on the next night's tour automatically - as my hotel told me I would be. I was lucky I was a solo traveler and they could squeeze me on but definitely ensure you lock your place in as this is one of the most popular tours to do! as well as Blue Lagoon - also another must-see

The tour company took me three times to see the lights. Unfortunately, it was cloudy every night. So they gave me up to 2 years to come back and redeem the tour.

Our guide was very informative and pleasant. I didn't feel that they knew exactly where we would see the Auroras but were hoping as we all were. After being out watching the stars/sky for a long time they decided to take us elsewhere which had natural springs that was felt would be nice for us to see. We didn't see the Auroras there either.

We never got to see the Northern lights unfortunately, it happens, but the company did give us a free tour another night so we could try and see them

Our guide made this trip ! After waiting for hours and not seeing the lights our guide spotted them out the window on the way back and the bus pulled over. Incredible to see and would recommend this tour. Thanks

We were lucky and saw the lights on our first try! Tour bus was big and and location had many other tour buses, which means many people which didn't bother us but might bother some

The tour in general was just fine but I didn't get to see the northern lights and I was in Iceland for 5 nights. This tour offers one tickets that doesn't expire for up to 2 years or until you see the northern lights whichever comes first.

Not only was our tour guide Karl incredibly fun, but they were determined to make sure we saw the lights._br/_ When the cloud cover threatened to spoil our night, they moved us to a different site and we saw them in all their glory.

Wow! This was definitely one of the coldest nights I've experienced but the guides were able to find a huge open field with no city lights so that we could enjoy the northern lights in all their glory. To see the night sky look like it's being cut with a knife of light is an experience second to none! The agency was very professional and ensured we were comfortable on the coach and warm when we were in the field.

took this tour and got lucky, was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Check the forecast and try to go as early as possible on your trip so I can retry if you dont get lucky the first time.

While the conditions weren’t great for our trip, we loved the scenery at the falls and brisk winter air. And we can try again for free within two years! I can’t wait to go back.

Knowledgeable guides but we didn’t see the northern lights and it was a bit hard to rebook. Also they need to work on confirmation as they do it very last minute like 2 hrs before the tour and I had to keep calling and emailing them for updates sometimes no one replies.

10 buses all go to the same place every night. There is too much light due to the buildings where they go. Far too many people. Talking to other people who use other companies said that the moved around to try and find the lights and clearer skies. _br/_ Find some other company.

A great tour and we were so very lucky to see some amazing lights! We were told March was the best time and it truly was. They told us there was very little chance we would see any as the moon was so bright but mother nature has no rules and we saw some spectacular lights :- The best thing about this tour is that the ticket is valid for 2 years if you dont see the lights, so a good excuse to visit again if you dont see them the first time.

This tour was also cancelled due to poor visibility, but they were so flexible and helpful. We went on our last night and were so fortunate to see the lights, which may not appear as bright as you see them in tv but still breathtaking. Thanks to our guide we went to the best possible spot to enjoy the lights without too many other tourists. There can be certain tourists who are only concerned with themselves and can make your experience difficult, but that was nothing to do with the tour company. Couldn't fault them

Driver turned up 35 minutes late for the pick up NOT HAPPY WAITING IN BELOW ZERO CONDITIONS!! Basically they drive you to a hill to look at the sky for a few hours in the hope you might see something. We saw a very poor version of the northern lights obviously not the trip organisers fault. Overpriced for what is basically a short drive to a hill. Again the tour guide was excellent and a small saving grace.

Unfortunately, we saw no lights on the night of our tour. The pick up instructions were not correct and it cost us an expensive taxi trip . Set a bad tone for the evening .

The lights were not visible to the naked eye, the colour only appear if you had a good camera.

Took this tour as we wanted the comfort of a large touring coach. It was as such except for too many seats crammed in and did not allow for much leg room. Mother Nature was not cooperative this night, but that of course is no fault of anyone. The guide was pleasant and hopeful for a sighting and at least three times she came back on the bus to get us because she thought things might be changing, but nothing. A bit difficult to do given all the people trying to dress, rush out of the bus. Given all of that, I would perhaps only try this again in a smaller vehicle. This is no way is a slight to the company at all as the service they provided was excellent.

Absolutely no stars whatsoever. We waited at our hotel for the 8pm to see northern lights tour. No one turned up. It was absolutely impossible to get in touch with anyone. Getting back uk it is still the same. There is no phone number available anywhere for this company. I have not finished this yet. Be very very aware. I have had to put one otherwise it would not be submitted

What a great tour!!!! We were disappointed that we didn't get to see the Northern Light the first night out. And to my surprise this company lets us keep trying until we see them. Luckily, we saw it on the 2nd night. The fact that we can keep on trying it's comforting that the money is not wasted. We were told by the tour company that it's valid for 2 years.

We were fortunate to view the northern lights during our first excursion. When the tour van picked us up at the Capital-Inn that evening it had snowed in Reykjavik in the afternoon and the sky was cloudy. We were not sure if the weather was right for viewing at that time. But we were assured that outside Reykjavik it was clear and conditions for seeing the lights were possible. As we drove northeast of Reykjavik the skies cleared. The tour bus pulled over into a ski resort parking area and we were able to view the northern lights above a mountain ridge for over 20 minutes. The view of the vivid green and pink lights that moved along the sky were amazing. However, taking photographs of the lights was difficult. Once the lights disappeared, we drove to another site in the National Park area. Unfortunately the northern lights did not re-appear there. Overall, a highly recommended excursion.

The guide was very knowledgable and new right where to take us to see the Northern Lights. I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in seeing the Northern Lights!

We did see the lights, the guide made a point to track them down. Be warned it is a long tour, we left at 9pm and got back at 2am. The night was very very very cold. I would recommend bringing many layers in case the weather turns as it did with us, getting exceptionally windy. For the photographers, be warned, the extreme cold and complete darkness makes changing the settings on a DSLR hard. No torches are allowed due to the fact you may pollute another person's photo shoot. In my case, the strong gusts of wind made holding the tripod steady difficult. The guide made sure that we would see something if there was activity and I am grateful and pleasantly surprised with their perseverance.

Although we did not see the Northern Lights on this night, we rebooked two nights later. We were blessed to see the entire sky filled with Northern Lights dancing before our eyes!

This tour is with Gray Line Iceland and it was amazing. I went to Iceland in the later half of September and I was aware that this was the beginning of Northern Lights Season so I was really hoping to see them but also prepared myself for disappointment. I am so happy to say that I was not disappointed at all! The day I initially booked this tour for was a no go because the forecast of the lights were low and the skies were cloudy. I wasn't notified of the cancellation that day via email like they said but instead I called them to confirm. At the time they said they usually make a decision of whether or not the tour will take place that day by 5PM. So the next day I was so happy when they said the tour was given a green light. I was so excited and didn't know what to expect. I went with the 9PM departure because some locals I met prior said the lights don't come out till later anyways. The tour guide, Ardis, was great. She headed the tour with a very realistic approach. She told us that patience is key and that the Northern Lights are NOT stationary and NOT always there. There are certain conditions that must take place at the same time solar activity, clear skies, and darkness in order to see the lights which makes seeing them so special. We drove out for a little less than an hour and were meant with only clear skies and stars- at first. But after about an hour passed, a wide cloud like structure appeared in the sky and the bus driver acclaimed to us all Look! Those are the Northern Lights! I looked at where he was pointing and my reaction was: ...huh? It was quite hard to see and very dim! So be prepared that what you see might not be the same as the pictures of the lights you saw on the internet or postcards. But with a little more patience, as Ardis suggested, the lights brightened, intensified, started to dance and I was in for the best 30 minutes of my life. At that moment my journey through multiple continents, delayed flights and frustrating baggage claim waits were all worth it. I could not believe that I was able to witness the Northern Lights with my very eyes. Although I must say, having a camera that is able to capture the lights is great because the pictures I got captured the lights much better than what I was able to see with my naked eye. ALSO- research how to take pictures of the Northern Lights ahead of time! When it's so cold and you guys have driven out to a place with little to no reception and the lights' presence changing by the second, it's a good idea to be prepared to capture a picture of the lights right when you arrive so you can take it whenever it comes. Our tour guide Ardis was so awesome in helping us take a picture of the lights. I am a solo traveler so I wasn't able to hit someone up to take pictures of me easily so Ardis helped me take pictures with her phone and captured them beautifully. She was so willing to help me and some other girls out and took so many pictures and emailed them to us afterwards. Thank you, Ardis!! Needless to say, seeing the lights was one of the best parts of visiting Iceland. Iceland is beautiful and chasing the Northern is a MUST DO when in Iceland!

Guides will vary. Went 3 nights in a row to finally catch lights. Accommodating with rebooking for guarantee to see lights. Oliver by far had most knowledge out of 3 nights. Be prepared to stand and wait for hours or sit on the bus until lights appear.

We really appreciated that after our first bus trip when we did not see many lights we were able to go again without having to pay again and on our second trip we saw some amazing lights and it really made our trip. Thanks to Grayline and guides for going above and beyond in this case.

The trip lasted about 5 hours, 3 of which were spent in a snow covered field in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights. In fairness to the Tour Operator, they obviously have no control over whether we are successful or otherwise. On the night we were went, there was very limited success. Again, in fairness to the Tour Operator, we were invited to re-attend either the next night or the one after that at no extra cost. This, of course, assumed there was space on these tours but, to be perfectly honest, having spent all that time being frozen, there was no appetite within our group to go again. Perhaps they relied on that? Perhaps a name change for the Tour to Pursuit of The Northern Lights might be more appropriate !

Booked for the Friday night but the lights stayed away so Gray Line offered another trip at no cost. We did this the following night and were rewarded with a 15 minute show - wow!!

This trip was booked for Sunday 12 th but sadly the Northern Lights were not coming out to play. Gray line allowed us to rebook the evening for Tuesday 14 th Nov. We were lucky enough to see them this time, although their show was not flamboyant, so we have a 2 year window within which we are allowed to rebook again. It was very cold, be warned!
