Viking Horse-Riding Tour and Blue Lagoon from Reykjavik

Reykjavik, Iceland

For an Icelandic experience with a difference, ride a Viking horse in the morning or early afternoon and then spend the rest of the day relaxing at the Blue Lagoon on this exciting day trip from Reykjavik.

The Icelandic horse breed has remained virtually unchanged since the Vikings brought them to Iceland in the 9th century. These sure-footed, docile and good-natured animals are ideal for beginners and experienced riders alike. The one-hour riding tour takes you through the outskirts of the capital.

After your riding adventure, you'll be transported to the famous Blue Lagoon for some well-earned relaxation. Once there you have many recreational options to choose from, such as walking in the Blue Lagoon's spectacular surroundings, bathing in the milky blue-green water, relaxing in a geothermal steam bath or releasing the stress from your shoulders under a Blue Lagoon waterfall.

Choose from a standard entrance-only pass to the Blue Lagoon or indulge in a bathing experience with use of towel, drink of your choice, skin care trial pack and algae mask on the comfort package. An afternoon to savour!
Please note the Blue Lagoon will be closed from 5 Jan - 21 Jan, 2016

Really enjoyed this tour!! The horse farm is family run and everyone is so nice. The horses are very well taken care of and well trained to the extent that absolutely no experience on a horse is required for the tour. The view along the way was spectacular and there was tea and coffee waiting for us on our return. The blue lagoon, once in the water was lovely, however the changing room and shower area were extremely hectic. I had taken my own towel to avoid the expense of renting one, but at some point it got stolen and I had to drip dry which was...unpleasant. But yeah, cannot blame the establishment for something like that. It could happen anywhere.

Grayline provided incorrect information about the tour and the drivers were unfriendly and not helpful. The horseback riding was 2 hours, not 1. Because of down time after the horseback riding, the farm took us back to the Grayline terminal. Had we been dropped off 20 minutes earlier, we would have gained another hour at the Blue Lagoon. Instead we had to wait in the terminal for 45 minutes. Additionally they shuttle mass amounts of people in different directions. The transportation was totally inefficient which really affected our tour experience. We started at 12:30 p.m., two hours of horseback riding, and didn't get to the Blue Lagoon until 5:45 p.m. The last shuttle back is at 9 p.m. and because we had 9 p.m. dinner reservations, we had to leave at 8 p.m. For a 500 tour for two people, we had a lot higher expectations. The horse farm itself was terrific, the Blue Lagoon wonderful, but terrible experience with Grayline and their drivers.

The staff was great! I forgot to get gloves when we were putting on the riding equipment, and when I was waiting to get on the horse one of the staff noticed this and brought me out some.

It was our last day in Reykjavik. It is now illegal for tour buses to pick up or drop off at downtown hotels, but the nearest bus stop was only 2 blocks away, in front of city hall. We were picked up from this location and brought to the bus terminal where we picked up the van to the horseback riding facility. We were offered water-proof pants, jackets, boots and required helmet. Please note, if you have your own waterproof pants and jacket and boots my waterproof hiking boots were perfect you can use your own. One person brought her own helmet, but when I read that they require you to use their equipment, I didn't bring mine. It wasn't true, you CAN use your own horse-riding helmet if you have one. They matched everyone to their horse, helped you mount and off you went. There was no instruction to start, but the people who had never ridden before seemed to have no trouble. The horses know their job. My horse did not like puddles and tried to evade them which was no big deal but made me a bit nervous when we had steep drop off on side of trail. Again, she knew the drill and was very sure footed. The horses' feet have a very narrow base of support, so they are perfect for narrow trails. I loved the tolt. The horses' necks swing side to side as they tolt, which is so interesting. Half-way through the ride, we dismounted and took a break at a beautiful viewpoint. There was a waterfall which I didn't see. I had just completed a tour where we saw about 20 waterfalls and I just didn't feel like seeing one more. Our tour guide, Oren, was charming. We did the tolt almost the entire way back, but people who had never ridden were free to walk, which they did. We just waited for them to catch up periodically. There was an advanced group which also tolted all the way back. I chose not to do that because I wanted the option of walking and didn't want to hold up anyone. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. At the end, we were taken back to the bus terminal and got the bus to the Blue Lagoon. We wished we had had more time to spend there. We spent about an hour in the water, opted for the package that included an extra mask and towels. Had we not had to get back for a group dinner, we would have spent at least a couple of hours there. I am only 5' tall, and there were some areas in the pool where I had to hold onto my daughter's shoulder to not be in over my head. I saw later, that they had floaties for free. Had I known, I would have used them. The return bus took us directly to the bus stop close to our hotel. They dropped everyone off similarly. Traffic during rush hour is crazy. Be prepared. I see that some people opt to go to the Blue Lagoon on their way from the airport upon arrival. I have to say, I was glad I was rested before going, I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much if I had just spent a sleepless night on a plane. If you travel well, it's probably a nice option. If you don't, do it later in your trip. The Blue Lagoon is between the airport and Reykjavik, so geographically, it might make sense.

Awesome awesome awesome !!! Riding the Icelandic horses was a dream one true..beautiful scenery, waterfalls and tolting was soooo much fun. Blue Lagoon is almost indescribable how magical it is, especially on a misty day at dusk (and not too crowded), mud mask and cocktail upgrade was totally worth it

The horse riding was wonderful, so glad we did it. I was a bit confused as to the timing of the excursions when i booked the trip. The Pickup time was 12:30. The farm was outside the city. By the time we got our gear on, finished the ride, got the gear off, and got back to reykjavik, it was 4:10. Then we would have had to wait until 5 PM to get a bus to the Blue Lagoon, which would have arrived there close to 6. We had dinner reservations for a party at 7, so there was no way we could go to the Blue Lagoon, and we lost out on half of the trip we paid for. If the itinerary would have been more specific, we would not have booked it. I assumed the horseriding was a stop on the way to the Blue Lagoon, and we'd have plenty of time to get back on a 6pm bus.

Amazing! This excursion far exceeded my expectations! The Viking horses were well taken care of and the ride was so scenic and long .... close to two hours. Then off to the Blue Lagoon .... upgrade to the Premium package to get a towel and Algae face mask. We could see why this was one of the Wonders of the World!

Horses were wonderful. But make sure you honestly discuss riding ability with the guides. Not all lope-y pace, you get some really trotting and fast riding up and down hills. Transport was very easy and well done. Blue lagoon was fun. Worth it to upgrade for towel and drink.

We really enjoyed our Blue Lagoon and Horse Back Riding experience!! The family who owned the horse farm was absolutely delightful and made sure we had a wonderful experience! The horses were so beautiful! I highly recommend this combination tour. This was one of our favorite experiences in Iceland. I have two teenage kids and they ranked this combination tour in their top experiences.

While the horse riding was wonderful the horses are sassy and independent spirits and the Blue Lagoon is a wonderful place to unwind I highly recommend the onsite restaurant, the Lava Restaurant, the tour did not go off without a hitch. Although the tour was confirmed and re-confirmed prior to arrival, Greyline Tours local tour provider still had us set to tour on the wrong day, we almost missed our tour altogether. They did however, jump through all hoops to make the tour happen for us on our last day in Iceland. For this I was thankful.

The trip using the viking horses followed by the blue lagoon was very enjoyable. A ride on the local horses in spectacular scenery is truly awe inspiring and the horses seemed to know how to react to the novices on the trip. The blue lagoon was also a great fun tourist location and was the center of a great many tourist trips in Iceland. _br/_ However, there were some very negative items on this trip as well. The pickup was at 930 and we were down in the hotel lobby 30 minutes prior to the time. The travel documents did not indicate that they do not come into the hotel lobby as did all my other trip bus supervisors did on our other trips and there was not indication as to what bus was to pick us up from inside the hotel. As a result 6 people in our party were left stranded without transportation. We finally arranged with the gray line that we would take taxis to the Laxnes horse farm at the cost of 2 X 65. Fortunately this worked out, but was very costly and could easily been avoided if they had taken the trouble as did all the other tours we were on to check in the hotel lobby for our party. The Gray line also is a gigantic bureaucracy and these two tours were not well coordinated and relied on the participants to make the connections.

The riding part of this tour was cancelled due to high winds. That's the only reason this isn't getting 5 stars. However, the Blue Lagoon portion went as scheduled. Was it touristy? Yes. Was it worth it? Oh Yes! Amazing location, relaxing, great fun with a group of friends and an adult beverage. Would do this again in a heartbeat.

This tour was really good. It gave a totally different experience in Iceland. Relaxing in Blue Lagoon without any time limits was awesome, especially after my muscles ache from the horse riding, which was lovely and picturesque by the way. I was a complete newbie at horse-riding, but I found myself staying on my horses. The guides are also distributed evenly to ensure that everyone is safe. I would recommend this trip to everyone.

I booked this for my wife who loves to ride.Overall was really good and the views along the ride were stunning. I would urge you to go to the toilet before getting on the horses as it is a 90min ride and with the horses trotting it can be uncomfortable. It would have been nice to go back a different route but I suppose this is down to the local geography.

We figured out the day before the tour we couldn't go on it. We were leaving from the airport after the tour, and had previously been told we could get a bus from the Blue Lagoon to the airport. We were also told the tour would be five hours including the Blue Lagoon. Both of those statements were incorrect. While we could theoretically go to the airport, we would not be allowed to take our luggage on the bus, so that kills that idea. Also the timing didn't work out to get to the airport.

We were first timers and had a lot of fun. The staff at the farm were extremely experienced and helpful. The horses were were pretty cool and some were a bit feisty. The trotting was a bit rough on the rear end but despite that, the whole experience was pretty amazing. Loved it.

The staff are very friendly and helpful they had everything I needed for a fun ride including gloves, helmet, and boots if you choose. They chose the perfect horse for me not too fast and I think we rode for a couple of hours along the Icelandic country side. I loved the experience and the only feedback I would give is that it would be nice for them to have a platform to help in mounting/dismounting the horse. My legs are strong but I am not experienced enough or agile enough to hop up on the horse. I used the fence to dismount in the end so I didn't embarrass myself. I would also bring a fanny pack for my phone/camera because they don't recommend that you bring a purse on the ride because of all of the bouncing. There are hooks to hang your personal items on including your purse but no lockers.

I booked my horse ride with Laxness Horse Farm through Viator and I'm so glad that I did. The staff were wonderful and helpful. They matched us to horses based on our riding experience. The first half of the ride the whole group rode together at a slow pace. We were then given the opportunity to join a fast group or slow group on the ride back, I went from being one of 20 to being one of 6 and I had an amazing ride. I love riding horses and this was one of my favorite rides to date. They take you for a lengthy ride with astounding views. I definitely want to go back.

The horse riding of an islandic horse is a very unique experience. I had a great ride. _br/_ The company is professional and safe. _br/_ We were split into 2 groups , the fast group got in a couple of good canters. _br/_ Then delivery to the blue lagoon was perfect. Well organized. Drivers r always on time here.

We did not enjoy the horse experience. The guides provided no help but only criticized riders for not keeping the horses in a single file line - and this was a beginner group. There were too many riders in the group. The Blue Lagoon was lovely. We enjoyed the water and a very nice dinner at Lava.

If you drive around on Iceland you're bound to see tons of beautiful horses, so this is a great opportunity to see them up close! You might even bond with your horse my mom did -- my horse, on the other hand, had a little bit of an attitude, haha. This is probably the longest horseback ride I've ever been on a good thing! and at times they gallop a little -- so this is not the boring pony ride of your childhood! Being able to go to the Blue Lagoon afterwards was very nice. They have flexible return hours so you can stay at the Blue Lagoon for pretty much as long as you want, but return buses are every 2 hours which was a little too spaced out for me -- I could have used another half hour or an hour but ended up cutting my visit a little short because I didn't need to be there another two hours. Blue Lagoon is a must-see if you're visiting Reykjavik!

I loved this trip. Got to see some lovely views and the horses are beautiful. Unlike any other horse. They are quite spirited and the trot is very bouncy due to shorter legs. The people were great too. Very friendly and match your horse with your experience.

Fun and different kind of day - nice people and guides, great horses, wonderful scenery, even cross through some creeks. After 30 minutes, horses get to graze a little, then it's back in the saddle to return to the farm. If you're going to blue lagoon next - no worries, they get you to tour bus facility for 1 pm departure. You'll have several departure times to select from at the end of the day. We ate a late lunch in their classy restaurant. It was superb. Hot springs perfect ending to a great day. The trip went exactly as it was described - and it was great. If you've never been on a horse, you'll still enjoy it.

This is a two-parter._br/_ This was rather poorly organized. Our hotel bus was 15 minutes late. We were dropped off at a terminal, where we waited another 45 minutes. Finally got to the stables well over an hour when we thought we'd be there. You will go out on the horses, rain or shine. We went out on the former. It was cold and wet. Lots of horses that follow each other on a long path around the stable grounds. No real excitement here._br/_ We then got on a mini bus, drove 15 minutes, and sat by the side of the road for another thirty, where we waited for yet another big bus that was packed with tourists and headed to the Blue Lagoon.

When on a trail ride people who are inexperienced should not go with the experienced people when they split the group. The trails and views were incredible, I would definitely do this again.. I would not go back to the blue lagoon, it is just a big hot tub and made my hair feel like hay.

The Viking Horse ride was marvelous, a highlight of our trip! The horses are all well behaved and gentle with the novice rider and the scenery is amazing! We forded three streams, one rather deep, which added zest to the adventure. The Blue Lagoon is not to be missed. Scheduling that after the horse ride made for a perfect day.

Absolutely loved if from start to finish. Pick up from hotel was a bit confusing as we were taken to a central point to wait and then taken back to our hotel to pick up other guests, but apart from that the whole day was wonderful. The horse riding was fantastic even if you were not a rider and the Blue Lagoon is a great way to relax afterwards. Thoroughly recommend this trip.

This tour was poorly navigated and organized. The hotel pick-up which you have to be ready for 30 min. before schedule, only picked us up and took us to the local bus station where we waited another 45 minutes for our ride to the stables. So we spent ALOT of time just waiting to get to the REAL ride to the stables. The driver was not particularly friendly nor informative. Once at the stables we waited for others to arrive. The horseback riding was nice, mainly to see the countryside, but the horses just line up and follow the same trail so not really horseback riding despite a video we watch on how to control the horses, at no point was it necessary to do anything regarding controlling the horse. They offered experienced riders a separate trail, my daughter has been riding off and on her whole life she lives in Kentucky if that tells you anything they gave her hard time because she doesn't own a horse. She just came with us rather than go with the less than friendly guides. After our ride we were shuttled to a bus which shuttled us to another bus which shuttled us to the Blue lagoon. The problem with this is there were only 3 buses back which ordinarily would have been fine, but we had scheduled a northern light dinner using the information on the website saying the minimum time for the tour was five hours. We believed them, added some leeway and figured we could easily be back for our dinner. The Minimum time for the trip was EIGHT hours because there were only set buses returning to Reykjavik. We arrived at 5:00 and the next bus was at 7:00 and it was a 45 minute ride back. We hurried thru our Blue lagoon experience quite lovely and a MUST see to get on the next bus. If I were planning this again, I would do the blue lagoon separately because these were really done seperately by the Viking group. It made no sense to combine the two when all they did was put you on city buses. Viator was great refunding our money for our missed dinner.
