Naples and Pompeii Day Trip from Rome

Rome, Italy

Combine a trip to Naples with a tour of Pompeii’s ruins on a full-day excursion from Rome! From the comfort of your coach, see the sights of Naples, admiring the Royal Palace, Castel dell’Ovo, Piazza del Plebiscito and more. Hear tales of Bourbon kings who once ruled the city, and then travel inland to visit Pompeii. Stop for lunch and then tour the UNESCO-listed ruins, seeing incredible monuments that lay undiscovered for centuries.

Start your day with a pickup from your central Rome hotel or alternatively, start your tour at a meeting point in town, near Rome Termini Station. Hit the road and travel south to Italy’s Campania region, and as you gaze out at the pretty landscape of Castelli Romani look out for Abbey of Montecassino -- a spectacular Benedictine monastery perched atop of a hill.

After a journey of roughly three hours, arrive in the southern Italian region of Campania and head straight to its capital Naples to discover its delights from the comfort of your coach. Entering the city via the coastal road from Mergellina Port, pass through Naples’ fishing quarter, Santa Lucia, and then stop for photos in front of Castel dell’Ovo – the medieval castle on the seafront.

Continue to the city’s historical center to see Piazza del Plebiscito, the impressive square that’s home to Naples Royal Palace (Palacio Real), three other Bourbon palaces, and an eye-catching colonnaded church – Basilica of San Francesco di Paola. Hear the history of Naples in its 19th-century heyday when the Bourbon kings ruled the land, and then take in more of the center’s A-list sites. See San Carlo Opera House, the Gallery of Umberto I and, finally, the imposing Castel Nuovo.

Leave the city, and travel south toward Mount Vesuvius, passing the towns of Ercolano (Herculaneum), Torre del Greco and Torre Annunziata before arriving in the town of Pompeii. Stop for a well-earned lunch in one of the town’s traditional restaurants, and then head out to visit Pompeii’s UNESCO-listed ruins on a 2-hour walking tour. Learn how the ancient city lay buried under Mount Vesuvius’ volcanic ash for centuries and see incredible excavations of old monuments, like Teatro Grande -- a theater that once seated 5,000 people.

After your tour, head back to your coach and then travel north back to Rome. Your tour finishes back at the start point near Termini Station. Alternatively, you can make use of a drop-off at Via Veneto, Piazza Barberini, Piazza Venezia or Piazza della Repubblica; simply let your guide know on the day.

This tour was a great experience. The short tour through Napoli leaves us with the desire for more of it but the Pompei tour compensates all of it. We made several friends in the bus (recommended). Our Pompei guide was Nandio and though old he managed us very well and was fun and entertaining.

The tour was not good , we went to Naples never left the bus, just drove around and then picked up another guide who was so anoying, we were taken to a Cameo Carving store , wasted one hour here. The restaurant for lunch was not good, a lot of people left the plates full since it was not good, when we finally got to Pompeii the guide wouldnt shut up, as soon as we went in the side I left the tour, I had been here before so I took my Grandson with me and walked were ever we wanted. This was the most terrible tour I have ever taken and at this vacation I did at least eight.

Great, knowledgeable guide, good lunch and amazing Pompeii. The only reason I have taken 2 stars off is the added tour of Naples. They just drove the bus through Naples without stopping anywhere which was a shame. Instead, they stopped at an useless factory where expensive ornaments are made out of seashells. Also it is better to sit on the right hand side of the bus to enjoy better views of Naples. Previously, we have taken a viator trip in UK to Stonehenge and Bath and liked it a lot.

This was a great tour and the lunch was also great. I didn't like having to stop at the place to sell us alchohol and trinkets.

Being picked up at the hotel was great! Our driver, Salvatore was texting while driving in the rain from Rome to Naples. After saying something to him, he stopped. We picked up our tour guide, Guido in Naples and he was good. As we were on a multilingual tour, we had to keep our questions limited as he was going from one language to another. I should have chosen an all English tour. In Pompeii, the tour included lunch, so we ate at a local restaurant. It was fantastic! They had a guitarist singing to the tourists, Italian songs which we would know and the waiters were so nice. The service and food was that of a 5 star restaurant . The tour brought us to a Cameo factory which was lovely as well as to a Limoncello bar/store. The male bartender at Limoncello bar/store had lost his patience with tourists by the time our bus pulled in he was rude and not welcoming. I ordered a hot coffee and got a cool one, I mentioned that to him and he chewed my head off. Then the cashier chimed in and I felt that it was me against them. Needless to say, the person with the purse pulls the strings, I finished my coffee and didn't buy their Best Limoncello in all of Italy Upon returning to my bus, I did notice that the bartender had a row of pre-made espresso in coffee cups. This bartender was clearly better off working at a local Italian bar/store then a tourist bar/store as he didn't care for tourists. Instead of stopping at these two locales, I would have preferred getting off the bus in Naples for an hour or two and having a gelato or a pizza in Naples, instead of just driving through the city center. David, a representative of Green Line Tours, was boring but nice. He didn't say much about anything, his personality was a bit flat.

The trip to Naples and Pompeii was awesome. Our guide Teresa in Pompeii had a natural love and knowledge of Pompeii. We learned so many special things from her. Our stop at a Cameo making shop was wonderful too. _br/_ Definitely worth the time , the countryside going south from Rome was beautiful too.

Our guide Kristina, and driver John Franco were excellent as was local guide Guido. Pompeii is a must see if you are in the area. Imagine that 48 FEET of ash fell on the city in 150 SECONDS. Incredible. They have excavated over over 3,000 rooms over the last 300 years and are still digging. Absolutely incredible.

This was a good tour, but a very long day. Once you are there, the place is amazing, but not anything you would not expect. True, the fact that the remains are very very preserved, and a lot of people died etc, but it is a town like any other, including brothels etc - nothing new under the sun!

I'm having a hard time with the rating of this tour based on the price and the value. Pompeii was amazing!!! The bus ride was a little long, stops along the way to use the toilets, and to buy food or snacks. Saying that the day-trip includes Naples is a little misleading. On our way to Pompeii the bus stopped in the seaport area to drop off some people who were connecting with another tour and picked up a few others. We didn't get off the bus, and went in a loop to get in and out of the sea port area. If you quickly turned you could see one of the sights the guide was speaking about. No time to take a photo. On our return trip a similar stop in Naples to drop off the guest we picked up, pick up the ones we dropped off for the other tour and to change bus drivers. Both I and my daughter were very disappointed, and a little frustrated as for the price per person for the tour expected a little more of Naples. As I first mentioned Pompeii was amazing, and the highlight of the trip. We had a wonderful lunch at a cafe close to the entrance and spent about 2 to- 2 and half hours our our tour of Pompeii before walking back to the bus for the ride back to Rome. If you do book this, be aware that most of your day trip will be on the bus getting to, and back from, Pompeii.

The trip was delayed because of the traffic jam in Naples and on the way to Rome. Actually we came back to Rome 2 hours later than the scheduled time. Considering the traffic jam, our visit to the Egg castle was cancelled. However, the visit to a coral factory 45 mins and local gift shop 25 mins for shopping remained. And in the itinerary, they did not mention the shopping time. So I am very unsatisfied with trip considering the high price and the relatively short tour times we only have 2 hours in Pompeii, and the rest is either on the bus, in the restaurant for lunch or in the shops. I will not recommend this trip to anyone._br/_ The only good point is the seafood spaghetti in the restaurant is surprisingly delirious.

We booked this tour at the last minute during our trip last autumn. Our guide Cristina was very informative, so do our guide in Naples/Pompeii forgot his name. We didn't get to explore Naples on foot just a view of the city while sitting on a bus and the tour guide pointing to landmarks in Naples but we did get walk to around Pompeii together with our guide for a couple of hours. The lunch in Pompeii was just okay. Wish we have the freedom to choose where and what we want to eat in Naples.

This was good. However our tour guide was pretty old. And our ear pieces were not that great. Which meant we could not hear him very well. If we would have had guides like some of others it would of been so much better

The tour was nice. My daughter and I were very disappointed that the Naples tour was completed from the inside of the bus. Upon a review of the trip description, I see that was definitely stated, but I missed it. The bus was comfortable, but did not have a restroom, so the bus had to stop on both ways to Pompeii. This made the trip much longer than needed.

The Naples and Pompeii day trip was an excellent way to spend the day. The bus ride was comfortable and stopped for a breaks at right times. The guides were informative, enthusiastic and helpful. There were around 35 people on the tour. After a quick ride around the center of Naples, we headed for Pompeii for lunch which I enjoyed and sight-seeing. The guided tour around Pompeii lasted for a little over two hours. I realized after the tour that we had missed some interesting sights but then its a massive place. I think everybody dozed off on the bus on the way back to Rome. We were dropped off at the nearest stops from our hotels right on time for dinner.

Good tour and well worth the money. Its a very long day so be prepared to be up early and not back until approx 8PM. It was so. Ice that they picked us up at our hotel in the morning, that was a nice perk of this tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and had a lot of interesting facts to share and you could tell that she really enjoyed her work. Take the tour. Ciao!

Too many stops for merchandising and not enough time in Pompeii. The Naples run was a quick drive through town, not nearly enough to get a feel of the seaside town. The Pompeii tour was rushed and did not cover some great parts of Pompeii ruins. I had to hike halfway back to the tourist office just to get a map of the ruins. The tour company was less interested in the group than in marketing the merchants at the stops.

Wish I could give more than 3 stars. The staff were 100 lovely and they were on time The bus was brand new and comfortable. They will pick you up at your hotel -- big plus. The bad part was the tour configuration. Naples is not the greatest city to look at unless you like looking at laundry on clothes lines and we didn't even leave the bus -- pass. Then we went to a seashell jewelry shop -- skip. The lunch was great and then we only spent 2 hours in Pompeii and raced through it. Pompeii is the most important part of the whole trip!!!

Pompeii is definitely interesting and worth a visit, but the rest of the trip was not exactly as described. _br/_ A tour-grup going to Capri was also on our bus. They were dropped off at the Naples Harbor on the way down, which was fine, but this meant that we had to go through Naples again in the rush-hour on the way home to pick them up, so in total we spent more more time stuck in a bus in Naples than walking i Pompeii - and we were back in Rome 9:30 pm!_br/_ Also they do not stop for a stroll in Santa Lucia as promised but rater take the group to a jewelry factory for a presentation.

Took us to a company that was making things of shells, waste of time and I was not interested, they kept on forcing everyone out of the bus to patron cafes at each stop and ask everyone out of the bus! Didn't even take us to see the images where people were buried , Naples could have been better if we got out, waste of time! Go to Naples by train , experience Naples and then go to Pompeii instead of taking this 13hr tour.

Loved the Naples/Pompeii day trip. So nice to relax and enjoy the sites without having to worry about driving, traffic etc. Touring around Naples was good, but the real treasure was exploring Pompeii. The guides were very knowledgeable and gave us a clear picture of life in Pompeii many years ago. Lunch was excellent and filling! Would highly recommend.

Food at lunch venue was below average. While it claims that there will be pick-up and drop-off at hotel, the tour company was lazy in the drop-off. Instead of dropping us at our hotel entrance, the guide had asked us to get out of the bus almost 1km away and told us to walk back.

Pompeii was meant to be the highlight of my trip as I was excited to visit the ruins of the legendary, place that I've learned about as a kid. I was prepared for a long journey and I looked forward to the commentary on board on the way there as we passed by other historical sites and beautiful landscapes. However, our guide wasn't particularly good. He mumbled and was quite monotone throughout most of the trip and I was unable to hear any of the facts. As the guide provided multi-lingual commentary throughout the tour, his mumbling made it all the more difficult to understand as he transitioned from one language to another.

I highly recommend taking a trip to Pompeii! The tour of the old city was breath taking, our tour guide gave us wonderful commentary about what we were seeing and how the city once functioned. However I do wish we had a moment to get off the bus in Naples and to get a better feel of the city instead of driving through it. Over all a nice outing.

The only positive part of this trip was Jose, our unbelievably passionate and knowledgeable tour guide in Pompeii. We never got out in Naples at all, lunch was awful pretty much there was a consensus on this, and it's pretty hard to have a bad meal in Italy and then they hit us up for the cappuccino and drinks that should have been free, while the guy singing had the nerve to pass around a cup, and we got roped into a gift shop stop that NO ONE was interested in and that we had no time for. Jose rescued it by giving us a fantastic and interesting guided tour in Pompeii. My suggestion is to book a tour where you buy your own lunch and verify that you're actually going to get out and see something in Naples. Otherwise, you waste a lot of time. Also, beware: You are not allowed to eat on the bus and there is not bathroom.

The tour guide, Nandi was rude and degrading to me. He found disabled people disgusting and felt we had no business trying to see the sites. He did nothing to help or assist my visit. We were supposed to be dropped off at our hotel but we're dumped a ways a way in the dark, 3 women, 1 disabled.

This was a terrible trip, they combined this trip and capri, which meant that a 8 hour excursion took 13 hours. Started out with dropping the customers for the Capri trip in Naples and then drove us into total traffic and not really any sights in Naples just to waste time in order to pick up our guide 30 min later. Then took us to a cameo store for another wasted hour. Next we drove to what the trip should have been about Pompeei just to feed us a lunch that I wouldn't service my dog. It was disgusting. Finally to Pompeii, which was a good tour, and was there for about 3 hours. Just to get back on the bus and go pick up the passengers for the Capri trip.....So out of 13 hours which 6 of it should have been travel time and the 3 hours in Pompeei our trip should have only been 8 to 9 hour and no more then 80.00 dollars. You need to understand this is a long day! We were picked up at 6.30am and got back at 10pm..... the guide is a really nice guy but hard to understand. There is a stop in Naples which is frankly a complete waste of time, don't get off bus and see very little, trip should go straight to Pompei. There is also a stop at a cameo factory which is a complete sales job, little interest when you just want to get to the main event...

An enjoyable trip. Syliva, our guide on the bus, and Guido, our guide in Naples and Pompeii, were very knowledgeable and were ver good at imparting that knowledge. Guido made Pompeii come alive and, even though we didn't cover the whole site, we covered the most interesting/important parts. The visit to the cameo factory would be good if you like that sort of thing. However as I don't wear jewellery and the prices of the cameos were beyond my budget for presents, it was not the most interesting part of the day. Down side - lunch was passable and, even though I'm not a big eater, it didn't really fill me up. It also felt like we were a bit of an inconvenience to the staff. I asked for a glass of wine and was given a 330ml bottle rather than being told they didn't sell wine by the glass perhaps the guide could mention this on the bus. I could have then changed to a soft drink or just had the water. I couldn't drink the whole bottle so this was a waste of money. They also closed the doors to the street and this made the room quite hot and stuffy. There was a man who played a guitar and sang very loudly. He wandered past every table and then came back expecting us to tip him. Would be much better to reduce the cost of the trip and let everyone find their own lunch as there are plenty of places to eat.
