El Yunque Rainforest Hiking from San Juan
San Juan, Puerto Rico
On this tour, you'll see typical Puerto Rican towns until you begin your ascent on a modern road through rapidly changing vistas of amazing vegetation. Tree orchids, giant ferns, wild flowers and tropical hardwoods frame spectacular waterfalls and views of the entire northeast coast.
For an up-close tour of El Yunque that includes a semi-athletic hike, put on your walking shoes to enjoy a 35-minute hike to La Mina. You’ll discover an amazing world of nature trails, waterfalls, scenic views and the sub-tropical rainforest habitat of Puerto Rico’s endangered wildlife.
El Yunque takes its name from an Indian spirit, Yuquiye, meaning "Forest of Clouds". There are many ways to see the rainforest but hiking is the best way to experience this amazing place!
After hiking through the rainforest to La Mina (35 minutes each way), cool off with a relaxing swim or dip in La Mina Falls (10-minute stop). Make sure you have a good breakfast before taking this tour!
The rainforest is home to more than 240 species of plants and wildlife, waterfalls, streams and hiking trails leading to enticing locations. You'll see tree orchids, giant ferns, wild flowers, tropical hardwoods, spectacular waterfalls and views of the entire north-east coast.
The tour stops at the most beautiful photographic sights, including Jokahu Tower, so don't forget to bring your camera!
This tour is actually not a hike. It is a walk in the rain forest._br/_ We first stopped at the visitors center where the guide explained about some plants and trees._br/_ After that we stopped at the observation tour breathtaking views.

The rainforest was lovely, but the path and swimming area were pretty crowded. And we only had about a half hour in the water. I could have spent much longer there as swimming under the waterfall was a blast! The water was cold, but not too cold, and it felt just right after about a minute in it. Don't wear contacts though if you want to swim under the waterfall.

This tour is great! Our guide is funny and takes great pride in what he does. We learned about the wonderful ecosystem of the rainforest and how it relates to the people and culture of Puerto Rico. The hike is refreshing and nice, even in the rain! And taking a dip in the waterfall pool is a must do!

The guide was very knowledgeable about the various plants and trees in the Forest. He was very knowledgeable on the history of the Puerto Rico. The waterfall area for swimming was a much needed rest stop as this hike is steep and winding. There are shops along the road for souveniors

Our tour guide, Ricky, was fantastic! He shared so much knowledge with us about El Yunque and Puerto Rico in general. The rainforest was stunning and Ricky made sure to point out all kinds of wildlife and various trees and flowers that we otherwise would not have noticed or appreciated. The benefits of having a tour guide who focused on our safety while walking over the slippery, wet rocks in El Yunque can't be underestimated--we spotted a few tourists who hadn't been as careful during their walk and had injuries ranging from sprained ankles to broken limbs!

Wonderful tour. Our guide was outstanding and very patient. A very memorable experience. My favorite part was standing beneath a waterfall after a brisk hike to a wonderful pool. I highly recommend this tour it was a memorable experience. I wish that I was in the pool right now.

Awesome views, friendly, knowledgeable guide. Would book again. Only con was food location for lunch, food good, way overpriced and it was obvious the restaurant were taking advantage of the tourist.

Tony was awesome. Not only was her very personable, but more importantly he was passionate about the information that he delivered. El Yunque and La Mina falls were breath-taking but I was most impressed with Tony!!!

We had a small group and a great driver/guide which made this tour very worthwhile. The rainforest is beautiful and we had a good day to walk it.

The El Yunque Rainforest hike was good. We saw two beautiful water falls and walked along a path through the jungle to swim under the falls. Bring water shoes if you plan to as the bottom is all rocks. Not sand! So if you have tender feet be aware. Other then that it is a must see if you're visiting Puerto Rico for the first time or any time for that matter, just go.

Tony did a good job explaining everything we encountered during the tour and more. His knowledge and experience of living just outside El Yunque made the experience feel like you had an inside scoop. The trail you hike on is one of the common paths so it can get crowded depending on the the time of day.

The trip was amazing. If you want to experience the bio-luminescent bay - this is your best option. _br/_ Make sure you pick a moonless night, preferably without clouds.

Great tour! Prepare to get a little wet as it rains daily but it was refreshing in July. Our tour guide Ricky was awesome and very knowledgeable about the history and plant life.

Our tour guide Nararyan was entertaining and knowledgable, and it was wonderful to walk along a stream to get to the waterfall. The waterfall swimming hole is crowded and chilly but still a great experience. There are also smaller pools along the way if you want to take a dip in a less crowded spot. I highly recommend the tour.

The rainforest was beautiful, including the 2 waterfalls and the view from an observation tower. The included transportation was a nice break from the rental car and the crazy San Juan traffic. The hike was somewhat strenuous. We would give the guide 5 stars- he was very knowledgeable and personable, we actually had coffee with him before and after our trip!

We loved this tour! Our tour guide, Angel, was very talkative, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Only downfall of the whole trip was that I slipped on the rocks in the waterfall causing my toe nail to fall off. Bring water shoes!!! Food stand stop at the end of the tour was an unexpected bonus. :)

Great tour! Great tour guide! Not a difficult hike (under 2 miles total). However, the hike back from la Mina is uphill and therefore a bit more challenging.
Review by: Hannah K, March 2015
Great tour; the guide was fabulous: knowledgeable, fluent, flexible and fun. He loved what he was doing and he loved the sights, and it truly showed. The walk was listed as moderate, and I'd not recommend it for handicapped or if you have a problem with occasional slippery stones; however, it was not truly strenuous at any point.
Review by: Arie H, February 2015
The rain forest was beautiful, but for the price we paid we should have seen more.

We were very happy with the tour. Our guide, Tony, is from the area and spoke nearly the entire drive to the rain forest, providing good area knowledge. We had a blast hiking the trails and swimming at the waterfall._br/_
If you go on the tour-hope that you get Tony.

Highly recommended. Beautiful trip. I would not call this hike especially "athletic" unless you're really out of shape. Highly informative guide, very helpful and courteous, enthusiastic. A nice way to spend the day outside of San Juan!

This was an amazing experience and I give most of the credit to our wonderful guide, Tony Caliz. Tony is a lifelong resident of the rainforest area and he knows the terrain and the people of the area well. He in informative, entertaining, and engaging. I can't believe the value I got for the money I paid, which included transportation to and from the rainforest from SJ, a couple of quick scenic photo ops, and a vigorous hike down and back from an impressive waterfall. Our hike (due to dodgy weather, thus low traffic) included a stop at the forest welcome center and concluded with a stop for local empanadas! I was lucky to get Tony Caliz via viator. You might also try looking him up individually. I know he gives all sorts of wonderful tours beyond what you see offered here!

Great tour, beautiful scenery and wonderful tour guide, Tony. Highlight of my trip. Highly recommended!
Review by: Mackenzie W, September 2014
THERE IS NO HIKING ON THIS TOUR. The description says 'semi athletic hike' but it's really a very easy 20 minute walk along paved path to the waterfall where you get to swim, and another 10 minute walk along a mother paved path to be picked up and driven around the rest of the time. As an avid hiker I was very disappointed by this as I expected to get some exercise. The path is also quite busy with other visitors, which took away from the enjoyment and likely scared away any wild life we may have otherwise been able to spot. Also, the whole experience felt rushed and I did not feel that I had enough time to really enjoy any individual part of it.

Ricardo was an awesome guide! Totally worth the hike to the falls. Glad we went to the La Mina falls, swimming in the water and enjoying the forests was an experience we will never forget!

Hiking in El Yunque Rainforest was fun! The group that I was with was rather small, so it made the experience more intimate and enjoyable. The hike itself was nice. I did, however, expect our driver/tour guide, Rob, to go on the hike with the group, but he stayed back. Despite this, we found our way to the waterfall, which was extremely crowded, but we were all able to get in the water. After hiking back and meeting up with Rob, he showed us some more locations in the forest, and took us to lunch (the lunch was amazing)! I would definitely recommend this tour. Thanks for a great time, Rob!

I would definitely reccomend this trip to anybody visiting Puerto Rico. It was super convenient being picked up at our hotel, and our guide Sammy was fun and funny and told us many interesting facts about Puerto Rico on our drive there, including good places to eat. We got many spectacular photos of the ranforest and and the hike itself was not that strenuous. With that being said, it is a rainforest so it rains a lot, so bring a rain poncho and make sure to wear good shoes, the trail is very slippery.
