Caneel Bay Kayak, Hike, and Snorkel with Sea Turtles

St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Discover the Caribbean beauty of St John on a combination kayak, hike and snorkel tour of Caneel Bay. Kayak in the turquoise waters of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Virgin Islands National Park, snorkel in grass beds often frequented by sea turtles and hike the picturesque forest trails of Turtle Point. Choose from a 3- or 5-hour tour (the latter option includes lunch), with guided instruction and equipment included. With breathtaking views and informative commentary, this outdoor adventure is fun for nature enthusiasts and families alike!

Meet your professional nature guide at Caneel Bay Resort’s Honeymoon Beach for a full safety briefing before taking to the sapphire-blue waters! Once you receive paddling and snorkeling instructions along with your lifejacket, hop on your kayak for a thrilling paddle around the bay teeming with colorful tropical fish. With Virgin Islands National Park as your backdrop, marvel at the coral reef – home to an abundance of marine life.
Next, explore five of St John’s best beaches on a hike across white sand, shaded by sea grape trees, coconut palms and tropical forests. You'll journey through the picturesque forest trails of Turtle Point, home to more than 800 native species of plants, while your informative guide points out local flora and fauna along the way.
Enjoy stunning views above the rocky outcrops looking toward Hawksnest Bay and the Durloe Cays, an area known for dolphin sightings, and keep an eye out for the wild donkeys, mongoose and white-tailed deer that frequent the area.
Then, snorkel a fringing coral reef in the shallow, clear waters as your guide points out the many different types of coral in this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. While snorkeling in a bed of sea grass, don’t be surprised if you come face to face with a sea turtle or stingray! After your tour, return to Honeymoon Beach at Caneel Bay Resort.

This is an awesome trip for the entire family. The guide was very nice and extremely knowledgeable of the island and the ecosystem of the island. The water is a little rough but overall a really nice way to spend the day on St. John.

This was highlight of our trip! Our guide, Tyler was so knowledgeable about the history of St. John. During our hike she explained how the cactus were used as a barbed wire around the perimeter of the plantations and how different plants can be used, including to relieve sunburn we we had and she showed us how to rub the oil from the leaves onto the sunburn. While snorkeling we saw at least 6 sea turtles, a few stingrays and even a reef shark. After our tour, we were told we could stay and use the amenities chairs, floaties, snorkel gear, etc. at Honeymoon Beach for the rest of the day a 49 pp value. The area is so incredible. If you are visiting St. John or even if you're considering a day trip from St. Thomas - this should make the top of your to do list. If possible, request Tyler.

This tour with Michael was the highlight of our trip to St. John. We learned so much from Michael on the hike and snorkel portions and he was very patient with us as first-time kayakers. It was the perfect way to spend a morning and I can't recommend it highly enough!

Mike was an awesome tour guide. He's top notch! Learned much about the plant life, insects of St John, underwater life, etc. You feel like you actually have an understanding of the mysteries of the island after you finish the tour with Mike. I highly recommend this tour.

Did the 3 hour afternoon tour with Patrick, our guide, who was awesome and super knowledgable! I'm not athletic at all ... I'm a city girl that has minimal exercise... The kayaking was a little bit exhausting we definitely fell behind but Patrick was very understanding and waited for us. Overall, it was informative and fun. Highly recommend it!!

I highly recommend this tour. Caneel Bay is gorgeous. I had never kayaked before- which was a lot of fun. The hike was not rigorous but educational with our very astute and entertaining tour guide- Austin. Snorkeling with the sea turtles was also awesome- now checked off the bucket list!

Our 2 boys 11 and 14 loved this trip. They liked the kayaking but their absolute favorite was the hike and things they saw along the way. After the hike you snorkel for a bit lot's of sea life to see. Our guide was awesome. Really worth it :

I did book this tour but because I was the only person to book it at that time, they changed it to another kayaking and snorkeling in different bay. I did that one which was great but there was no turtles. My guide was William who was an informative and fun guide. I asked him of my original plan and he managed to get me on the snorkeling tour with turtles so I ended up doing the tour twice in one day. Besides being sunburned everything was great.

Jason was our guide and he did a great job of offering insights and information on the island. Snorkeling was not fantastic because of weather but we did see sea turtles, fish and star fish. Kayaking and hiking gave us a real insight to the development of St. John.. Would highly recommend the trip.

Great tour with plenty of info and just the right amount of activity for us. We were lucky to be the only couple that day and Jessie, our wonderful guide, customized it to our needs and skills. She shared her enthusiasm for the fauna and flora very well and led us to the right spots to sample what St John offers. I even got to see more turtles on that day than through multiple prior tours. Returning to Honeymoon Beach to lounge or enjoy water sports in the protected bay was perfect.

WOW, What an excellent Trip! My wife and I booked this echo tour and had a blast. Our tour guide Hayden was fantastic. Very knowledgeable on the history of the area, marine life, etc. Without him we would have just wandered around the island and missed all the important facts. Coming back in 2 years and bringing the whole family to take this tour. Highlight of our trip. Definite bucket list fulfilled! Thanks

I was skeptical to book any tours prior to our arrival but I am really glad we booked this tour through Viator. My boyfriend and I weren't staying in St, John so we took a cab from the Ferry terminal to Caneel Bay and walked about .75 of a mile through the resort to the top of Honeymoon beach where we were greeted by our tour-guide Patrick and his team! Much to our delight there was only one other couple who would be heading out with us they mentioned tour groups vary in size 4 - 10 people. Day locks were provided to secure our belongings and Patrick brought plenty of water bottles for our tour. We started out with a quick kayak trip to a private beach within the Caneel resort where we began our hike. The hike was great and Patrick was incredibly knowledgeable! I recommend hiking in sneakers or water shoes as it is rocky and muddy but people did hike in flip flops and were fine. After the hike we snorkeled and this was my favorite part because Patrick snorkeled with us! He made the sea turtles come to the surface and pointed out awesome things we wouldn't have noticed on our own. After snorkeling we headed back to Honeymoon Beach via Kayak. There were several restrooms to use along the way including a great restroom on the Caneel property. Upon our return they advised we could use any of the rental equipment chairs, paddleboards, etc for the remainder of the day! After our tour we went to Caneel Resort for lunch and then came back to Honeymoon beach for relaxing! I definitely recommend the morning tour which is what we did.

Unfortunately, our tour was canceled due to rough seas, but the staff who take care of Honeymoon Beach at Caneel Bay where the tour starts were fantastic. We spent the previous day at the beach there and enjoyed the all-day beach pass, which included paddleboards, kayaks, beach chairs and snorkel gear. Would highly recommend this spot.

This was such a fun trip! Casey was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the island and the local fauna and flora. The hike was fun (breathtaking views!), the kayaking was easy, and while snorkeling we learned about different fish, saw a ray, a live conch, sea turtles...wow it was memorable! My girls are 9 and 10 and it was a trip they won't soon forget. Highly recommended.
