Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Te Anau or Manapouri
USD $175.00

Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Te Anau or Manapouri

Te Anau, New Zealand

Your Doubtful Sound adventure begins as you cruise the crystal clear waters of Lake Manapouri. Then it's over Wilmot Pass, stopping along the way to experience some of Fiordland's densest rainforest and to view the colorful alpine moss gardens before joining the 3-hour Doubtful Sound Cruise that takes in the most dramatic scenery of Doubtful Sound.

You'll be picked up from your Te Anau hotel and travel to Lake Manapouri to West Arm. You'll board a coach and cross over the 670-meter high Wilmot Pass. You'll stop here to view Doubtful Sound far below. Your journey continues to Deep Cove where you'll board a spacious catamaran for a three-hour Doubful Sound Wilderness Cruise that takes in the most dramatic scenery of Doubtful Sound. The skipper will provide detailed commentary and point out highlights.

Ten times larger than Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound is an unspoiled wilderness of many moods, one minute clear, blue and sun drenched, the next mysterious and mist shrouded. A wild place of dense rainforest, rugged peaks, cascading waterfalls and deep still waters quiet, serene and green.

Keep a look out for wildlife as bottlenose dolphins frequently come alongside the vessel, fur seals bask on the rocks around the fiord and rare penguins can at times be observed.

This was a beautiful day trip. While the weather was wet we still had a very enjoyable day. Staff were capable and helpful, the boat was immaculately clean and well run, and the scenery fabulous. Thank you!!

This was an amazing experience cruising through Doubtful Sound. The operator Real Journeys ran a very slick operation. Nothing was a problem and everything ran to clock work from the time the bus picked up us till we arrived at the boat to take us on the cruise into Doubtful Sound.

Doubtful sound.....3 hours of cruising seems really boring with nothing much to see

Absolutely stunning and so worth the two bus trips and a lake trip to get to it we were in Te Anau. We were very impressed with the smooth running of the whole day but then, we've never had a Viator trip that hasn't run like clockwork! and loved the final 45minute coach journey, on an unmade road, through the rainforest to get to our boat for the cruise. Entertaining and knowledgable commentary from the drivers/captain on the journey was great. The actual cruise surpassed our expectations stunning scenery with plenty of viewing space for everyone and just enough, sensitive and, at times, hilarious commentary. We were extremely lucky with the wall-to-wall sunshine and even more fortunate to see seals, crested penguins surfing the waves, albatrosses and, best of all, a pod of humpback whales. And the master stroke from the crew...everyone was asked to put away phones/cameras and to stop talking while the engines were cut and we simply drifted along in rapt silence for ten minutes. Bliss.

What a marvellous experience. The scenery was like nothing we have ever seen before -breathtaking. The side fjords were magical places and we were also lucky enough to see penguins and a pod of dolphins. Wonderful.

Review by:   Peter T,    March 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Unfortunately it rained and was foggy for the entire day, so that it was not possible to see much of the landscape from the boats and buses. Seems it rains 200 days per year, so it would be best to wait until you are there to check the weather report before purchasing a ticket several days in advance. Otherwise its an exciting trip in nice weather. Starts at 7 AM and ends around 2-3 PM.

We spent three days, two nights at Te Anau, one full day of which we did the excursion from to and from Doubtful Sound - what an experience. It was magnificent. We were collected from our motel and driven by bus to Manapouri Lake where we boarded a boat that took us to the landing point opposite, a fascinating cruise in itself. The scenery was spectacular even on this part of the tour. We then boarded a coach and drove over Wilmot Pass, surrounded by the jagged peaks of soaring alps and fabulous views along valleys that included distant lakes. When we arrived at Doubtful Sound we boarded the catamaran that took us on a cruise right out to the Tasman Sea, where we saw fur seals soaking up the sun on small rocky islands. After three hours of exploring the various arms of the Doubtful Sound that is ten times larger than Milford Sound, btw we returned on the same stunning route with unforgettable memories.

This is our favourite sound as it is SILENT! More difficult to get to so the coach and boat rides to the cruise boat were very necessary but added to the day's interest and variety. The boat was comfortable and excellent for animal-spotting and scenery-viewing. We ordered the packed lunches which were average but saved us from having to make and take lunches with us. A very beautiful and special place

A wonderful day out. Well organised, informative and very enjoyable. The staff on all stages of the day were great. We saw lots of wildlife and stunning scenery. It was so much quiet and less touristy than the day I and #39;d had at Milford Sound. I and #39;d definitely recommend this trip.

We did this trip with Real Journey, a local company and everyone in that company is putting 100 effort to make the trip enjoyable and memorable! The bus driver, the cruise guide, the cruise captain, everyone was amazing. I don't have to tell you too much about the nature there, it is one of the first 10 places to see in the world! It is better to stay in Te Anau than Queenstown as all trips to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound are 8-10 hours from Te Anau, add another 5 hours back and forth to Queenstown.....

Best trip to most beautiful place we've ever been. Lucked out on a warm sunny day, and the ocean was calm so we got photos of furry seals and crested penguins. Staff excellent, very good job without cutting any shortcuts.

Great experience, with both the boat trips and bus equally enjoyable. Lake Manapouri was impressive enough, but then seeing the Sounds was breath-taking. Friendly and informative staff.

This is a must do trip! The staff at Real Journeys are brilliant and add to the trip experience. You get two boat trips and an interesting drive through a mountain pass on a coach! The 3 to 4 hour sailing out to the Tasman Sea is a voyage back in time! The scenery has not changed for millions of years and is mainly untouched by man. You will not see views like it anywhere else? It is an 8 to 9 hour trip so pack a picnic.

This is a full day tour which starts off by Bus to the first boat, then another bus which gets you to your final boat. The boats were really nice - there was a lot of space to move around. I felt safe even though there was torrential rain the entire day. There were more waterfalls than I could count, stunning scenery, and very cute little seal pups. The tour guides were friendly and informative. What is really great about this tour is that given the extensive travel time, it wasn't fully packed and seemed to be filled with nicer fellow tourists.

Doubtful Sound is beautiful even on a slightly grey day as we experienced I. Waterfalls were lovely but despite looking hard the Dolphins were not playing that day.

An absolutely brilliant day. One of the highlights of our trip to NZ._br/_ The staff were excellent but it was all about the scenery._br/_ Even fealt quite emotional when they turned all the engines off for a silent 2 minutes

This was a pretty good tour. You are taken by bus to a boat that takes you across a lake for another bus ride thru a rain forest to the Sound for a cruise of the Doubtful Sound.. The boats were new and the staff friendly. The scenery was great. Our only objection was that the length of the tour. The boat ride back became a little boring but other than that a great way to spend a day in Te Anau

We were a bit concerned when we got to the dock at Manapouri as it was raining and very overcast. It started raining hard and rained for the boat ride and then the bus ride but the bus driver told us how lucky we were to be there when it was raining as there are more and bigger waterfalls. He was right. It stopped raining shortly after we got on the boat for Doubtful Sound and the experience could not have been better. Everyone was very nice and shared a lot of information.

Everything went according to expectations, no complaints. Sadly the weather was not great, but the boat crew still made a good day for us all. The rain made the waterfalls more spectacular, and we were able to go to the mouth of the sound as the sea was fairly calm. I would recommend this as a good value day tour, if I get another opportunity I would try the overnight tour.

The trip is very nice, especially if you are lucky with the weather, but it is very expensive too. I would probably pick the shorter trip to Milford next time, it is cheaper and I guess your pictures will be very similar.
