When Pigs Fry: Walking Food Tour of Toronto's Hogtown History

Toronto, Canada

At one point, there were so many pigs in Toronto that the city garnered the nickname "Hogtown", and its pork and bacon earned a reputation as some of the best in the world. On this 3-hour food tour, experience and sample the legendary deliciousness for yourself. Visit one of Toronto's best butcher shops to learn about quality pork and where it comes from. Learn about the history of domestic pig farming and the development of the pork industry in Canada. Your tour guide might even "ham it up" with some pig jokes ... if you're lucky.

Your tour begins outside the Hockey Hall of Fame building. Once you meet up with your tour guide, head to the St. Lawrence Market, where a nearby restaurant serves arguably Toronto's signature sandwich: a peameal bacon sandwich. While munching on this savory treat, your guide will explain the origin of peameal bacon, the significance of the markets to Toronto, and how the area has changed over the last 200 years.

After learning about the area and how Toronto earned the unflattering yet beloved nickname "Hogtown", you'll hop on board an iconic streetcar and roll through the financial and entertainment districts into a trendy neighborhood in the west end. Arrive at King Street West and Queen Street, where you'll stop by a local butcher shop that specializes in organic meats from sustainably practicing farms in the region. Learn about organic and ethical farming and what goes into making quality pork products.

Following the butcher shop, visit two more restaurants to try a southern U.S. piggy spin on a classic Canadian dish, as well as a popular German street food with American and British flavor influences. It's unsurprising that as such a multicultural city, Toronto's signature pork dishes have been transformed by different cultural influences. At each of these restaurant shops, you can purchase a beverage. Both places have an excellent selection of local craft beers (for those 19+ years of age).

As your tour concludes, your guide will recommend several options for dinner (including the restaurants visited on the tour) and give you directions to wherever you need to go for your next adventure.

The porchetta was one of the best things we ever ate in our lives! Definitely make sure the St. Lawrence Market will be open when you go, because it has a fascinating history that we would never have known without the tour guide. We did wish there was a plan for getting back to the starting spot because it was a long walk, on our own. And it started raining. If that problem were solved it would be a 5 star tour.

Great fun, good food and a terrific group. The Guide knows his Toronto and the stops for food are well organised and worthwhile. I'd have liked more history about Toronto and Hog Town but his memories of growing up in Windsor were pleasant enough. Unfortunately the Market was closed as we took the tour on Sunday Tip Don't take the tour on Sunday!. We ended up at Wurst later than advertised as the venue was closed at our ETA as it was hosting a Wedding tip don't take the tour if one of the stops is hosting a wedding!_br/_ The Guide happily added an hour of his time to the Tour. Gave us a good framework to continue our personal exploration of Toronto.

This was an amazing tour. Our guide couldn't have been better, full of information about the city and it's history. The food was incredible too. We were just sorry we didn't have time to do more tours with the same company. Highly recommended!
