Wachau Valley Small-Group Tour and Wine Tasting from Vienna

Vienna, Austria

Spend a day away from Vienna to discover the picturesque Wachau Valley in the Austrian countryside on this small-group, fully guided tour. Satisfy your cravings with a delicious lunch at a traditional Heurige (wine tavern). With your expert guide, visit stunning villages and historical sites like the UNESCO World Heritage-listed medieval town of Dürnstein made famous by Richard the Lionheart and go for a wine tasting in a small local winery. Then, you'll see the the Wachau Valley from another perspective on a 70-minute scenic Danube river cruise (May to September only) between the historic villages of Spitz and Melk.

Leaving Vienna behind you, travel in a comfortable vehicle to the country’s best winemaking region, the Wachau Valley for a fully guided day tour. Renowned for its quality wines, stunning villages and breathtaking scenery, it is the perfect place to enjoy a day away from the city. You’ll see the whole of the Wachau Valley while learning about its fascinating culture and history and sampling local wine as well as some other delicacies like the valley’s famed local specialties.

Besides the highlights, you’ll break away from the crowds to also see the more authentic and off-the-beaten-track landscapes. You also have the chance to visit the valley's oldest church, dating back to the year 987.

Arrive in the UNESCO-listed Dürnstein – a picturesque medieval town famous for being where Richard the Lionheart was held captive in 1192. There, enjoy some free time to explore the streets and the castle ruins. Afterwards you'll go for lunch in a traditional family-run Austrian wine tavern (not included).

Then, sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery while driving deep into the valley. On a relaxing 70-minute scenic Danube river cruise from Spitz to Melk, you’ll take in the Wachau Valley from yet another perspective—the middle of the majestic River Danube. Before returning back to Vienna, you'll see Melk Abbey (Stift Melk) - entrance included during the winter months, a world-famous Benedictine abbey founded in 1089. Located above the town of Melk on a rocky outcrop, this impressive monastic site boasts stunning views of the Danube river down below.

We had a great time. Our guide was excellent and very informative. 6 people was the perfect number. Our Danube cruise was beautiful. Would highly recommend.

A great trip! Our guide Marco was awesome! We saw a lot of sights that we would have missed with out the tour. The tour is a must to see some of the sights outside of Vienna. Marco seemed to have a passion for making sure we had a good time. The trip to Vienna was to celebrate our fiftieth wedding anniversary, and it went off perfectly!

This is a somewhat late rating - I'm finally getting around to it! I was in Vienna in mid-April 2017 and was hoping to do self-bike rental in the Wachau Valley to do some wine tasting and visit the Melk Abbey. Well, wouldn't you know - it snowed in mid-April! It became too cold to do what I wanted but, alas, I found a Viator tour at the last minute that provided a round trip from Vienna to the Wachau region. It covered wine tasting, lunch in a nice, local village AND a Melk Abbey tour note, you cannot take photos inside the Abbey. And it was for a very reasonable price. I feel I got exactly what I wanted all in one day. I would recommend this day trip to anyone! Enjoy!

Had a great trip with upbeat guide Marco Muzzi. We enjoyed the Melk Monestary very much, especially the museum and the library. The early spring light snowfall was a highlight and made the trip more picturesque. The visit to the old town of Wösendorf was also very scenic. We were well entertained in the two wineries we visited and tasted some great wines. Learned a lot about Grüner Veltliner.

It was so nice to see the countryside around Vienna. We visited several vineyards and tried a number of beautiful wines. Then we had a lovely meal at a nice restaurant and saw more of the countryside. Highly recommended.

This tour met all our expectations - it was fun, informative, relaxing and had a few surprises. James was our guide. He made it feel as if we were being shown around by a good friend rather than a stranger and he ensured that everyone was happy and comfortable. He customized the tour based on our interests and timing - showing us sites we otherwise would have overlooked. The wine tastings were fun and I learned a lot about a new wine region. And, the guided tour of Melk Abbey was wonderful, as was the lunch in the traditional Austrian restaurant. We did so much during the day but surprisingly never felt rushed. Looking back, I can't believe how much we fit in.

We had a wonderful time on this tour. Mario and his colleague well look after us. Nice warm sunny day in winter time. The scenery throughout our trip was gorgeous. Melk Abbey is magnificent. Food and wine were really tasty. Nothing get better than this!

We were lucky enough to have James as our guide for the day and he was a brilliant host. The wine tasting was fantastic and felt as though we were doing it with friends not strangers. Overall a great trip that was excellent value for money, and we’re very grateful to James for such a memorable day.

Good tour with 3-4 wine tasting stops. As it was end of autumn, early winter, unable to visit actual vineyards, otherwise was a great experience.

This was a truly lovely day. We were in a comfortable vehicle with a group of 5 other travelers. Our tour guide, Marco, was very pleasant and knew a lot about wine growing in the region which he shared with us via microphone so everyone could hear in the car en route to the first tasting stop where someone from the region walked us through the varietals from the area. There was no pressure to buy anything, but there was a little gift shop which had things other than wine to purchase which was nice since we were going to be travelling for a while after this and didn't want to lug heavy things country to country. We stopped at a small town, Durnstein, where we had the option of walking around town or hiking up to the castle ruins. We went to a lovely little restaurant nearby and had a delicious lunch and more wine tasting. Because it was the very last day of the summer season in the winter, the tour goes to Melk Abbey, Marco drove us to the Danube where we took a sublime boat ride down the river. Like something out of a fairy tale, a few families parents, kids, grandparents got on the boat in traditional clothing lederhosen, peasant dresses, etc. The kids were running around while the adults tried to keep up with them, while sipping beer in the sun, all of which gave the trip the feel of a dream. I can't promise that another family will end up on your boat, but even if that hadn't happened, it still would have been a lovely day. It was also an easy way to get out of the big city of Vienna for the day. If you like wine, even a little, I recommend this trip.

We had Mario as a tour guide. He was excellent!! Highly recommend this tour. Really an ideal way to tour the wineries, see a lovely small town plus countryside, take a boat ride, and share a meal with a small group of people. A nice mix. Even an introverted traveler like me would appreciate this top-notch tour. We have taken 3 viator tours 2 in Zurich and 1 in Vienna, and this was hands down the best of the bunch. Close friends told us this was a must-do, and I would give the same advise to you!!

We had a great time. Our tour guide, Mario was great. The group of eight people got along really well. Learned a lot of local wines, had a great lunch and drank some great wines. The boat trip back was really nice. We highly recommend this tour for anyone that likes wine, like to see beautiful scenery and wants to visit the quaint village of Dürnheim.

There are two things that make a tour like this fun, the people you are with and the tour guide. In our case we hit the jackpot with both. The tour guide was entertaining and knowledgeable about the region and the wines. He used his knowledge to enhance our experience of the wines and the region. The people you are with cannot be controlled...so you have to make it fun with others.

Thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Our guide Thomas was fantastic and we had a great day with three other couples. So nice to visit wine country in Austria, we learnt so much during the day. Lunch was great in a local place in Durnstein, only €10 each and ready when we arrived. Highly recommended.

Very enjoyable trip. Thomas our guide was excellent and knowledgeable about the places of interest and the wines we tasted. Lunch was delicious. Also the fact that there were only 8 passengers in the minivan made it even more enjoyable as we got to talk to the others. It was also nice to get out of the city for a few hours. Would recommend this trip and tour company

Thomas was knowledgeable informative guide with a great sense of humor. Even though the weather was not cooperating, we had a great time. Only weak spot of the tour was the fine print on the confirmation which required another us to make a second confirmation three days prior to the tour, or it could have been cancelled and the monies lost. This proved to not be an issue, but it created a bunch of consternation.

Our guide, Mario, was very knowledgeable about wine and the area. We enjoyed the small group atmosphere and found the trip to be well-planned and pleasant with sufficient time to enjoy each activity. The areas were beautiful and well worth seeing. The wines were splendid and the lunch was a fun group interaction with much laughter and discussion led by Mario. I would highly recommend this trip.

We went on the Wachau Valley Small Group Tour and Wine Tasting, which was operated by Vienna Explorer, and it was fantastic. Our guide Mario was personable and funny, and very knowledgeable in wine as well as history. The sights, wine, and food were all spectacular. We visited 3 wine makers, several lovely small towns and had lunch at a wonderful heuriger at one, and an hour long boat ride on the Danube. The stunning countryside was a great counterpoint to the beautiful architecture in Vienna. Definitely recommended!

We highly recommend this tour! Our guide was fantastic, and we had a great time meeting other couples. We loved touring the quaint town of Durnstein and we went to two different wineries (beautiful scenery) and had our cruise on the Danube. Even though it was raining in Melk - seeing the Melk Abbe

Really enjoyable tour. All day tour in the beautiful Wachau Valley. We rode in a Mercedes van which was much roomier than I thought it would be. There is an aisle in the van so each row is on the aisle. Eight passengers were very comfortable including in passenger front seat. Time spent in the impossibly picturesque town of Durnstein._br/_ Two wine tastings, delicious lunch in a beautiful garden and river cruise. Couldnt have been nicer._br/_ Our tour guide/driver Marco was great, very engaged and friendly conducting one of the tastings himself._br/_ Very highly recommended.

by far the best tour we went on and best day in vienna!! tomas was an awesome tour guide. answered all of our questions and mended to the lively personalities in our group. he suggested great things to do in the town and helped us order great food at the gorgeous lunch spot. we thought being a larger group seven people would be hard to go on a tour but the van worked perfect for a simi big group. _br/_ this tour is worth every penny and great to wine taste, have a boat ride and see the melk. highly recommended by all seven of us in our group!!

This is a definite must do while you are in Vienna. We saw and learned about neighboring villages and their history. Took a tour through the Abbey in Melk, which was unbelievably architected and very informative. Great wine tasting at Spitz and Durnstein where Richard the Lionheart was held captive during the crusades - so much history, so cool! The tour guide Marco was extremely knowledgeable and worked around our interests. These guys really deliver the full experience.

The wine-tasting part of the trip was excellent. The long hot ride on the river boat - not so much - because the service was terrible and the cabin was stuffy. Still overall, it was an enjoyable day.

The tour was simply great. Mario was a wonderful and knowledgeable tour guide, I mean driver apparently you can't be a tour guide in Austria without passing a test, and Mario had not yet done so. The other couple we toured with were smart and engaging, which added to the experience. I would recommend the Wachau Valley tour to anyone interested in religious history and wine.

One of the best tours we have ever taken. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable of the wines we tasted and the vineyards we visited. And it truly was a small group with just 6 of us. We also visited the Melk Abbey instead of the river cruise because we were late in the season and I have to say, I was glad we weren't able to do the cruise as the Abbey was wonderful. We have been on many wine tasting tours and this was by far the best.
