We visited Big Island in April this year. Wonderful tour of all the key attractions on Big Island with Polynesian Adventures Tours. Hotel pickup/drop off from / to the airport and Hawaiian Airlines flight from Honolulu to Hilo on Big Island was well very well organized and on time. This gave us full 12 hours to cover the itinerary. The trip to Rainbow Falls, Akatsuka Orchid Gardens, Mauna Loa factory and Liluokalani Gardens were delightful. Volcanoes National Park, chain of craters, lava fields and an up close view of the Kilauea caldera at Pahoa was simply spectacular and breathtaking. Our local tour guide Leroy was very knowledgable and regaled us with interesting facts and local native Hawaiian stories. This will be a very memorable trip for us as after 3 weeks of our visit the Kilauea volcano erupted and due to extreme volcanic activity and lava flows Pahoa and neighboring areas have been evacuated and closed to visitors.

Very informative and helpful guide. Appreciated his expertise and knowledge of the sights. It was unfortunate the weather was not favorable during the time at Volcano National Park.

What an amazing day! The tour from start to finish was great. JT, our tour guide was friendly, actually hilarious, and very knowledgeable. As JT drove us around he gave us great tid bits about the area, the culture, the food etc. I would highly recommend this tour and JT as a guide.

Had an amazing trip with John as our tour guide. He has been doing this for many years and was very knowledgeable and interactive. Only thing I would change is the dinner options. It was strange to be dropped off at a mall and get dinner at the food court which did not have many good options. Aside from that, the tour was great!

Had a great time. It was a little long since the pick up in Honolulu for the airport was 4:30 a.m. and did not get back to my hotel in Honolulu until close to 10:00 p.m. Hiwever,, it was worth it. The guide, Captain Rob, is so knowledgeable about Hawaiian culture, history, and volcanology. I learned a lot and the Big Island is so beautiful. It was worth the effort getting up so early in the morning for the tour,

Loved the many stops and the generous time allowed at each. Bus driver / tour guide very knowledgeable about Hawaii culture and language. The only thing keeping me from a 5 star was the fact that it was a rain filled day and that we couldn't see the red hot lava at Volcanoes Park.

This trip was disappointing. I took my 3 boys aged 17, 14 and 11. We were picked up from our hotel at 4.30am which was a lot earlier than I was expecting. The plane left at 6.40am. Our guide Jane was lovely but the tour was just too long. The morning was fairly boring. The black sand beach and turtles were cool, but i really could have skipped the gardens and orchid farm. The waterfall was also worthwhile. The macadamia factory was alright. Then came the long almost 2 hour lunch stop. Sitting around in the hotel lobby was tedious. The afternoon of seeing the volcano and lava tube was the best bit. We could have skipped the rest and just seen that and then we wouldn't have been too tired to enjoy it. The other issue was that it was cold. I know they tell you to bring a rain jacket, which we did, but they didn't tell us that it might actually be cold. We spent about an hour standing around at dusk waiting to see the red glow. It was a long wait for a mild red glow. The plane left at 8.18pm and we weren't home until nearly 10pm. The day was just too long, with too much waiting around.

I should have known that this booking was not a good idea when having booked and paid I recieved a email asking for another USD20 each as the tour was over booked!_br/_ Being from Australia we were really looking forward to this tour. We were told to wait on the side of the road for the bus from 4.20am for a 4.30am pick up. We were picked up at 5.00am! _br/_ Unfortunately the weather on the Big Island was very wet but we were happy to still get out and look at the sights. Sadly we couldn't go the Wailuku River State Park and hike to Rainbow Falls as access was stopped by police and emergency vehicles. The visit to the macadamia nut farm turned aout to be a visit to a gify shop. To learn how these nuts are harvested and roasted we were told to walk along a walkway and look in through the windows of the factory!!! We expected at least a talk from an expert at the nut farm._br/_ The biggest disappointment was when the bus driver made the decision that we would go the a shopping strip for dinner rather than drive along the Chain of Craters Road to view other volcanic formations and witness the red glow of lava at the active Halemaumau crater at dusk. We said that there was too much fog. he also said this at the Kilauea Iki caldera but at times the fog lift for a few minutes to give us a glimpse of what we game to see. The guide should have driven us to the last site which was not very far away and given us the opportunity rather than deciding that we could have dinner at KFC or Starbucks! Also, it had stopped raining when we were having Dinner. We then sat for over an hour at the airport waiting for our flight. We paid AUD650 each for this day trip to see the volcanoes and the glow of the lava and having the opportunity to get even glimpses taken away to sit in a carpark for an hour or so was not a suitable substitute. This tour is conducted by Polynesian Adventures and I would not recommend them.

The island of Hawaii is fascinating. Leroy, our tour guide, provided extensive information on the history, geography and flora and fauna of Hawaii as we drove around. No question went unanswered. The tour includes a black sand beach, Japanese gardens, Rainbow Falls, macadamia farm and orchid nursery before heading up to the Volcano National Park. There are a lot of stops within the park to see steam vents, lava tube and a range of craters before heading to the lookout to watch the glow from the active Kilauea volcano as the sun sets. It's a long tour, but really interesting.

Our overal experience was really great for this trip. Here are some things we had problems finding answers to that will hopefully help those who are looking at this trip. _br/_ Free shuttle service is provided from a lot of hires in Waikiki. Be prepared for an early start. We had to be in our lobby by 4:30am. We were driven to the airport picking up others along the way. We arrived at the airport and got our boarding passes. Flight was not until 6:55 so there is time to get breakfast. Not a lot of choices at HNL. Basically Burger King or Starbucks._br/_ Short 1 hour flight to meet another bus. We were driven to another hotel to pick up more guests and then the first stop was a convenience store. This does help if you dont want to bring water bottles or fool with a lot of items through security._br/_ From there we went to the black sand beach for a 20 minute stop. It seems short but there is not a lot to see. It was a neat location. Hadnt seen anything like it and worth the time._br/_ We were then driven through the Japanese gardens and old Hilo town but did not stop at either. Hugh was our tour guide and during the drive was pointing out interesting facts and local knowledge. He did a great job throughout the day._br/_ The next stop was rainbow falls. Another 20 minutes. Nice falls to look at._br/_ The next stop was the Mauna Loa macadamia nut factory. It was a federal holiday so the plant was not running but they had a self guided video tour that was decent and a gift shop with samples and ice cream. Spent about 30 minutes here._br/_ All during the morning there was plenty of opportunity for snacks food and restrooms. No issues with these at all._br/_ The next stop was the orchid garden. Another 30 minutes which was 30 minutes too long. Its a green house with orchids to purchase. Im not a flower person so I could have done without this or a much shorter time. I am sure others liked it._br/_ Finally arrived at Volcanoes National Park. It is now 12:45 and time for lunch. Earlier in the day we were handed a menu with 8 choices where we could preorder lunch. Fish sandwich, pork sandwich, salad, and various variety plates which of corse included green salad and Mac salad. Prices were between 17-21 per entree. We stopped at Vocano House and had lunch. Service was not bad. Food was ok. We were given 1 hour and 45 minutes for this stop. You could eat, go to the visitors center, the art gallery, Sulphur Springs or steam vents. The lunch place overlooks the caldera which is really awesome! You can walk outside and get a better look. Eat quick and take the hike to the Sulphur Springs and steam vents. Its 1 1/2 mike round trip but very worth it. So cool to see this and you dont get another chance during the trip. Visitor center is ok. Skipped the art gallery._br/_ Next stop was jagger museum. Not a lot in the museum but it has a great view of the caldera. While we were there no lava was visible. It was too far below the crater. Lots of steam though. Wish we could have made it the last stop so you could see the glow at sunset. 30 minutes for this stop. Next was the lava tube. Short hike but really cool to see. On the way to the next big stop we stopped at several craters along the way. Reallly enjoyed seeing all of these. Each one is different, has a different story. _br/_ Next big stop was all the way down at the ocean. The drive was gorgeous. Lots of lava fields on either side dropping all the way down to the ocean. Got to walk out onto the cliff overlooking the ocean. Could barely see the steam rising where lava is currently pouring into the sea. One of the highlights of the trip._br/_ From there was a drive back out again stopping at various spots along the way to briefly look at things._br/_ Now it is about 6:15 and we start the drive back to the airport. Snack options have been limited since lunch so come prepared with your own. Arrival at the airport was at 7pm for a 8:48pm flight back to HNL. Good options for dinner are Etremly limited in this airport. This was the most disappointing part of the trip. We were starving by the we arrived and the best thing they had was a hot dog. Come prepared. Another hour flight back to another bus that took us back to the hotel. We were the last stop at 10:15. A long day for sure but got to see a lot of things that would have been difficult to find just driving ourselves. This trip would have 5 stars if I could have seen lava not really the trips fault. I blame the volcano and the dinner options had been better. It was a disappointing way to end the day._br/_ I would definitely recommend this trip. None of the walking was very strenuous and you can choose options of waking is an issue. Overall great trip!

This was a very good trip. Very interesting and long day on the Big Island that was made very enjoyable by our driver Dennis_br/_ ok, so.... Volcano National Park was great, the rainforest was neat, the lava tubes were interesting, the macadamia nut plant was ok, and the other tourists on the bus were all very nice. Glad we did this trip and would highly recommend. Warning....its about 18 hours long so go to bed by 7 pm the night before...you'll be up at 3:30am and won't get back to your hotel until 10 pm. The only negative was that for this price they should include the rather mediocre lunch at Volcano House instead of charging 20 a person extra. Thought that was rather cheap...

Tour was good. It's a very long day thou so be prepared. If you want to take fluid had to be under 3oz or you have to pay at least $25 to check bags. Very little time at each place so it's a bit of a rush to see things. Don't expect to see hot lava or flower no lava it's likely you won't

We saw many things on this long but absolutely worth it day and saw many incredible and enjoyable places. _br/_ Plenty of time spent at the Volcano National Park, which was our main interest, but everything else was worth the visit! _br/_ Everything was very well organised and the entire day allowed us to enjoy!

This is a great tour to do, but be aware that it often rains in the park and the weather is a bit unpredictable. Stopping at the macadamia nut factory and the gardens which turned out to be no more than an orchid nursery were rather perfunctory and not necessary. The stops at Rainbow Falls, the lava fields and Kilauea were great and worth the trip.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip! All of the organisation was punctual and clear. The island itself was fascinating and the bus driver knowledgable and local. The highlight for me was actually the trip at the end to the ocean where 'the lava meets the sea', it is geologically stunning. Great long day but well worth it.

Wow! This was a long day! However, it was a good experience. Our guide was VERY knowledgeable and talked and answered questions constantly about little things you wouldn't normally hear. Right from the airport we stopped at a little hole in the wall grocery type place for a breakfast sandwich and/or snacks. That was a nice touch cause everyone was hungry from the early flight from Oahu. It was amazing how many places we actually stopped to see. Lots of trivia info that I found very interesting. All in all, a very good tour and I highly recommend it.

A good option if you have only 1 day to see another island. We had Jane for a driver and she was knowledgeable and helped ensure at end of day that we had time to see the volcano bubbling up by having us get off the bus and go back and look. That completed the trip for us. Be aware that this trip is to Volcanoes National Park and not to the volcano you see bubbling and sending lava into the ocean on TV. We were worried about timing with getting picked up at 5 AM and making flights but these are professionals and we worried for nothing. There was time in the morning and time in evening. Hilo Airport is small. If Jane has time at end of day she may let you stop for something for dinner. Trust her that there will be time. Our only problem was returning to Honolulu where the driver did not seem to know the route and we got stuck on a dead end. So we got back later than planned but now have another story to share. I would recommend this trip to see a variety of things in the Hilo area that you might not see otherwise.

This tour could have been so much better. We wasted a lot of time driving around looking at high schools and local buildings that had to relevance to the Volcano. We also wasted time at n orchid grower. I felt like if we could just get to volcano Nat'l park we would have had more time to enjoy and hike. The falls stop was great, and the Macadamia orchard stop was great, we also enjoyed the drive down to the coast to see where the lava flows into the ocean.....well we saw steam. We are an active family and this tour was a little boring for us. I would have liked to have more time at the Park on the ground to hike and explore. If you are older, and like a more hands off tour....from a bus window....this would probably be ok for you. If you want to get out, and have more time on the ground, I would find another option

First and foremost, this is a Big Island day trip not just the volcanoes. Do not expect to be in Volcanoes National Park for the entire time. That being said, the was a great trip. The morning was a little chaotic and unorganized. There are several packages that are offered, and you are all in the same group when departing the airport. Figuring out which group the tour guide was speaking to proved difficult with all of the noise in the airport. Once that was settled, everything else seemed to run smoothly. Our tour guide on the Big Island was great. He did his best to make everything interesting and threw in some humor to keep you engaged. He provided a great deal of Hawaiian history that was rather interesting. You make several stops along the way to some gardens and a water fall. At one of the garden stops, you could buy plants and have them shipped back to your residence. After this, we had lunch by the volcano. The restaurant was good and had an amazing view of the volcano. The only issue was that the food took forever to come out causing us to rush to do the things that we wanted to do. There was not enough time at this stop to do everything. From this point on, we spent the afternoon in Volcanoes National Park. We were able to see Kilauea, lava flows from the past 100 years, and we were able to go into a lave tube. We were lucky enough to see Kilauea erupt from the observation area. After this, our tour guide dropped us off in an area to buy food and them took us to the airport. Expect this to be about a 16 hour day from the time you are picked up until you are dropped off.

This was the worst tour I've ever taken. First, I mislaid my voucher. When I called Polynesian Tours, they told me that only Viator issued the vouchers. However, there was no phone number or any other way to contact Viator for a replacement voucher. Second, I was first told that the hotel pickup would be at 5:00am. When I reconfirmed with Polynesian tours, the agent told me that the hotel pick-up would be at 4:30am. I was at the pick-up point at 4:20am. I waited until 4:40am and there was no bus. I called Polynesian. The agent told me that the driver was having some problems picking up others at other hotels. I waited another 10 minutes, still no bus. I called again. The agent told me that the driver was 7 minutes away. The bus did not arrive at the pick-up point. Instead, a man walked up to me from about 1/2 block away and asked me if I were waiting for the tour bus. I told him I was. He directed me to the bus. Then he proceeded to stop at three other hotels to pick up other passengers. We finally arrived at the airport and a Polynesian agent retrieved our vouchers and directed us to the TSA checkpoint. At the gate for the flight we had to wait another 45 minutes before the flight took off. Upon arrival at the Hilo airport, we stood around waiting for directions to the bus. Finally, a Polynesian agent directed us to the bus. The bus driver-tour guide then gave as some lame-humored introduction about his qualifications and the tour. First he stopped at a mom and pop variety store for us to buy water and snacks. For what I paid for this tour why didn't the bus driver supply us with water? After about 1/2 hour, the driver directed us back to the bus. The next stop was some Macadamia Nut Store. We were there for about 1/2 hour. Then the driver took us to an orchid farm. We were there for another 1/2 hour. I didn't pay 500 to be taken to places from which the driver-tour guide received a kick-back. I came to see volcanoes, not to have local businesses shake me down for my tourist dollars. All along there was a 25-year old video played on a video screen at the front of the bus about some eye-witness to real live red hot lava flows. Then, the driver gave us some more snarky humor and took us to a beach front for a stroll and potty break. We were there for about 1/2 hour. Then he took us to an area of Hilo that a tsunami had devastated and which had a Japanese garden. Okay, I feel compassion for the victims of the tsunami, but I didn't pay 500 to have an opportunity to feel sorry for the tsunami victims and to see the efforts of the Japanese sister-city to provide a nice garden. I came to see volcanoes. After about 45 minutes, the driver got us back on the bus and took us to the Volcanoes National Park. He stopped at the Rainbow Falls. We wandered around for awhile and got back on the bus. Next stop was the Thurston Lava Tube. The driver finally dropped us off at the park HQ for a lunch at the concession restaurant which overlooked the Kilauea Crater rim. Okay so the volcano was issuing steam. Ho Hum. Then the driver took us to see a lava field and a couple of steam vents. Okay, nothing new here. I've seen lava fields in central Oregon, Crater Lake in Oregon, and the Craters of the Moon park in Idaho. I live 60 miles from Mt. Rainier, 100 miles from Mt. St. Helens, and I used to live 30 miles from Mt. Veniaminov in Alaska. I've seen Mt. Shasta in California, and the volcano outside Portland, Oregon. So, I came to see real, live flowing red hot lava as was advertised in the photos the AAA magazine and the Viator advertisements and brochures. Eventually, the driver took us back to the airport. We waited another hour and a half for the plane to return us to Honolulu. Upon arrival, we climbed aboard another Polynesian bus that took us to our hotels. After stopping at a dozen hotels, the driver finally dropped me off at my hotel around 9:00pm. I didn't have dinner, so I had to get dinner at my hotel. I didn't get to bed until around 10:30pm. So, I was up for 16 hours and I had to get all my meals on my own, and not once did I see red hot lava flowing down a volcano. This tour was terrible.

Great overall trip, but definitely a long day particularly if your flight home is delayed due to bad weather, not something you can control of course. Suggestions for improvement I believe would be less time at the Hilo black sand beach and Japanese gardens. More time around Volcano house to be able to take in the art museum and visitors centre as well as lunch and souvenir shop, we simply ran out of time! We did do a little back tracking at this part of the tour too which was odd and wasted some time. Greater choice of lunches at the restaurant than what was offered in the bus, or at least booking tables for those who wanted to take in the view from there. There was some confusion about lunch arrangements and time was lost because of this unfortunately. A little more time at the volcano would have been also nice. Dennis did a great job though for what was only his second tour. A little more general information about Hawaiian life during the bus time would have been good.

The tour to Volcanoes National Park is amazing. Before we get to the park, we visited a black sand beach and watched sea turtles, then we visited a Japanese Garden with Hawaii King's status. We had a short stop at a cold spring. We visited a rainbow water fall with a tropical rainforest. The tour guide is very nice and very experienced. On the way to the Volcanoes National Park, she explained many Hawaii and big island specialties. The Volcanoes Park is huge, there are so many amazing sites need to see. The tour guid knows where is the best part to see. Volcanoes National Park is a must to see park in a life time. We saw the endless cold lava, the nature arts of the cold lava, the lava tube, ..., the active volcanoes in the park. We saw the Volcanoes burst from the smoke during the day time and we came back before sunset to see the bigger volcanoes during night time. It was a long day, but tour guide had proper stops for food and drink. Our whole family were very happy.

This is a full day. Our tour guide was very informative and we went places I wouldn't have known about, such as the lava tubes. Be aware that the environment is actually very uninviting, much like a weird isolated planet with little vegetation. If you're expecting something like Yellowstone steam vents, you'll be disappointed. This place is unique unto itself.

We saw turtles at the black sand beach, stopped at the Shinmachi tsunami sight, visited the Japanese Gardens at Liliuokalani Park and Gardens, stopped at Rainbow Falls which were flowing and we could see the rainbow, the orchids were beautiful - and the free samples at the Macadamia farm were a bonus. We went into the Volcano Park for lunch at Volcano House which was pretty awesome as we had a view of the caldera - that was our first sighting of the volcano. After lunch we had some time to look around and walk down to the Sulphur Banks and then we got back on the bus and started going around and looking at different spots in the volcano park. We went everywhere - across old lava fields, into the Thurston Lava Tube, into holes in the ground. Our guide was really knowledgeable which made a huge difference. We drove down along the Chain of Craters Road with quite a few stops which was really interesting and ended up at the Holei Sea Arch on the coastline. From that point it is a 10 mile/16 kilometre hike to where the lava flows into the ocean - and there's no time on this tour to do that. From here we headed back up to the Jaggar Museum with a few more stops on the way back - and it also took us to the closest point to the volcano all day. The closest you get to the active part of the volcano is about a kilometre away at the Jaggar Museum at the end of the day - and that's for your own health and safety. It was worth the wait because as the sun is setting it is really pretty and better to see the lava bubbling away._br/_ It is a long day - we had to be ready at 5am and were back at our hotel at 10pm. I would definitely recommend taking some insect repellant for the stop at the waterfall there were mosquitoes and a jumper/jacket as it was freezing by the time we got to Jaggar Museum. There is a domestic flight to get to the island and the rule regarding liquids being less than 100ml applies - for all liquids including sunscreen, insect repellant, etc. Anything bigger than that was confiscated or thrown away._br/_ Overall, we would recommend this tour - it's whet our appetite to go back and see more!
